Summary
Aeb roo [เเอบรู้้] ‘Secretly knowing’, referring to knowledge one has without being directly told about it.
Bai-ruk [ไบรุุก] Someone who is ‘bisexual-insertive’ and is only insertive in either anal, oral or vaginal sex.
Barami [บารมี ] Charisma, charm or prestige.
Both [โบท] From the English word ‘both’, meaning someone who can either be receptive or insertive in anal intercourse.
Both-ruk [โบทรุุก] Someone who can in principle be either recepttive or insertive in anal intercourse, but prefers the insertive role.
Both-rab [โบทรัับ] Someone who can in principle be either recepttive or insertive in anal intercourse, but prefers the receptive role.
Chaai chatri [ชายชาตรีี] A man who is loyal, honest and strong. Faen [เเฟน] Boyfriend/girlfriend; this word is gender neuttral and usually (but not always) implies a sexual relationship.
Farang [ฝรั่่ ง] Foreigner/Westerner, usually denoting a white-skinned Caucasian.
Gig [กิ๊๊ก] Casual sex partner or potential casual partner or boyfriend.
Jao choo [เจ้้าชู้้] Meaning ‘owns multiple lovers’: flirtatious, womanising.
Kala-thetsa [กาลเทศะ] Thai cultural concept of knowing how to behave and conduct oneself properly in every situation.
Kathoey [กะเทย] Gender label referring to a feminized man, also often translated as ‘third gender’, ‘transggender’, ‘transvestite’ or ‘hermaphrodite’.
Kathoey khwaai [กะเทยควาย] Derogative term (‘Buffalo kathoey’) to denote an unfeminine or unsophisticated kathoey.
Kunlasatree [กุุลสตรีี] A stereotypical good woman, defined as ‘profficient and sophisticated in household duties; graceful, pleasant, yet unassuming in her appearance and social manners; and consservative in her sexuality’ (Taywaditep et al. 2003 , 1023).
Lan-laa [ลั้้นลา] Sexually playful, flirtatious.
Mathayom [มััธยม] High school, divided into three years of junior high school (mathayom ton [มััธยมต้้น], grades 7–9) and three years of senior high school (mathayom plaai [มััธยมปลาย], grades 10–12).
Mia noi [เมีียน้้อย] Minor wife, meaning a second (or third or fourth) woman who is taken care of by a man in a more or less permanent arrangement.
Naa [หน้้า] Face (in the sense of one's reputation, as in ‘losing face’).
Nak leng [นัักเลง] A rough, tough, womanising, heavy-drinking man, sometimes associated with mafia practices.
