Summary
This appendix compares: self-sustaining communities, liberal capitalism, social democracy, state-capitalism, state-controlled capitalism, and state socialism. They are analysed according to three criteria: type of ownership of productive assets (private or collective, shown on top horizontal axis), form of coordination (market, state – left vertical axis), and of control of surplus product (minimally regulated by the state, partially regulated, and regulated – right vertical axis). These models are simplifications illustrating the major characteristics of economies. Real economic formations are in practice mixtures of these variables.
