Summary
With the launch of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the new global compact replacing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), global health research remains critical in the development and implementation of inclusive, equitable, and sustainable policies and interventions. While there is a health-specific SDG 3 on good health and well-being, about 11 of the 17 SDGs have embedded and integrated health-related goals in at least 29 targets and 37 indicators (GBD 2016 SDG Collaborators, 2017). These goals reflect global priorities for global sustainable development and will attract critical funding from governments and development assistance, as was the case with the MDGs, and increasingly from philanthropies, the private sector, and public-private partnerships.
