Summary

A major purpose of Part II has been to argue that an irreducible human perspective, implicit in the conceptualism is required for understanding the special sciences and other macro ontologies. Dennett argues that something similar – the intentional stance – is unavoidable as a way of understanding intelligent creatures, but he thinks that this fact is compatible with physicalism. This chapter argues that it is not compatible. This conflict is not avoided by Dennett’s move from being an instrumentalist to what he calls ‘moderate realism’.
