Appendix - A liturgical draft
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 29 September 2009
Summary
The following text is intended to show how the view of the liturgy expressed in the lectures might be worked out in practice. It owes something to the liturgical texts in my book, Remaking the Liturgy, but it has been developed in certain directions. As is explained in it, there has been no drastic linguistic revision. I was concerned to concentrate the attention of the reader on the more narrowly liturgical features.
The text begins with the Kiss of Peace, as the migration into the Eucharistic action may be said to lie between the intercessions and the pax. The text of the Ordinary Preface has been retained because, though it might be strictly speaking held to be otiose, it does establish for the worshipper the context of the holy action.
It will be noted that the separation between the Institution Narrative and the Eucharistic action has been rigorously revived. The Narrative is present as one of the saving acts and is not the occasion of consecration. With the Kiss of Peace the worshipper enters the holy action, which begins with the taking of bread and wine.
It must be understood that the draft text is intended only as an example. Provided that the pattern and principle are preserved, variation is possible and to be expected.
