Summary
The information gathered here comes from a variety of sources – chiefly the Mitchell Library, Glasgow; the University of Cape Town Manuscripts and Archives Department, the Chisholm Papers (mainly Box 10), and Morag Chisholm's Papers.
The caveat given in Chapter 2 is here repeated. Future researchers are warned that both contemporary and modern dates, whether typed, in Chisholm's own hand or pencilled in by others, are at odds with one other. For instance, a typewritten statement announcing the formal constitution of the Active Society is dated ‘19 October 1931’, but a printed leaflet for the Society declares it to have been founded in 1930 and other evidence (letters, reviews, programmes, etc.) makes it clear that 1930 is the correct date. But Chisholm himself, in later undated attempts to put together the Society's history, has taken 1931 as the start date (Chisholm Papers, Box 1, 8). The only certain guides are newspaper clippings which include the printed date or have been dated by a news clipping agency, or documents of similar provenance. In addition concerts were cancelled or moved to another date, programmes were altered and some concerts were repeated at other venues. What appears in a prospectus and perhaps even in a programme may very well not have occurred at the actual concert, especially as some of the programmes consulted are mock-ups made prior to printing. To collect a whole run of printed programmes and then correlate them with the reviews to establish what actually occurred would be a substantial, and possibly impossible, task. Nor have I included every single piece that was performed, or every performer. What follows here is therefore offered only as an initial sorting of partial evidence in the hope that some braver soul with more time decides to take on the search. Where information has been derived from a prospectus or a programme, this is indicated in bold type.
