Clicking ‘headword’ (top left), or rather, leaving this default mode as it is, means working in the ‘simple’ mode, which allows the basic retrieval of a specific headword to be typed into the search box (top left). Moreover, if this box is left ‘empty’ (type in *), this mode allows for the retrieval of an alphabetical list of headwords in accordance with any of the filters, optionally activated on the right and documented by the search protocol (top right). For example, the string humour has been triggered by opting for one of the eight display filters (top right). These filters can be activated in isolation or combination, with the protocol always giving evidence of the possibly complex arrangement of filters. The user could, for example, search for humorous terms referring to women in England versus Scotland and/or Ireland. The default mode of presenting the results in the retrieval window is by headwords in their original sequential order of the Dictionary, with the keywords created by the activated filters subordinated by line insertion. As users may be interested in having either the headwords or the filter keywords in isolation and in alphabetical arrangement, different presentation modes (to be discussed in ) are at their disposal. In any case, users can copy and paste the result lists of their queries.
