Summary
This appendix classifies by source every item from archival collections that is either reproduced or cited in the present work, providing fuller archival detail (collection or item number) when that seems desirable. Citation is to be understood as encompassing all references or quotations (partial or whole) occuring in editorial footnotes. Permissions to draw upon the listed archival sources are indicated in the Acknowledgements prefacing Volume 1 and are not repeated here.
For each archival collection a list of ‘items reproduced’ is followed by a list of ‘items cited’. Items reproduced are identified by their letter numbers (for example [640]), while items cited are identified by their footnote numbers (for example [641.3]). A full description of the item or items involved may be obtained by referring to the indicated letter or footnote. It is helpful to bear in mind that letters 1–332, 333–732, and 733–1148 are in Volumes 1, 2, and 3, respectively.
When the archival label for a specific item is reproduced it is normally placed immediately after the listing of that item. Thus, ‘[442] 43/116–7’ indicates that the document reproduced as letter [442] is identified by label 43/116–7 in its archival source. The few exceptions to this procedure are clearly indicated. Archival labels for items cited in a footnote are given in the same fashion, but when a footnote cites more than one item from the same collection the listing is in the order of citation. Thus, ‘[936.2] 11.72 and 11.59’ indicates that the first of the two items from the collection cited in the footnote has archival label 11.72 and the second 11.59.
