Summary
Key Learning Points
Importance of managing differing cultural assumptions within an overall culture of theatre practice
Development of policies in the theatre environment that respect cultural and lifestyle diversity
Consequences of failing to address bullying and disrespect among the theatre workforce
At the outset in this chapter, it is necessary to point out that much of the literature around some of these topics is generated from research outside the UK and is related to nursing. However, the origins of the material do not mean that it is lacking in relevance or resonance for all perioperative practitioners in the UK. A manager in an operating department, regardless of seniority or length of time in post, has the role of managing that area and in doing so can contribute to the creation of a more productive and healthy workplace environment (Advisory Conciliation Arbitration Service 2008).
Evidence of problems
There is a plethora of legislation to protect all workers in the UK, in particular those who belong to minority groups, and it could be argued that any issues around the management of these groups should have become history a long time ago.
