Summary
Trauma-informed care has become a standard of care in many medical and mental health settings around the world. Trauma-informed care is a framework through which providers and staff attempt to foster safety, security, and empowerment as part of their service provision. This holistic approach to care, incorporating both the emotional and physical health of patients, is critical given the high incidence of trauma that is rarely reported to healthcare professionals by patients. Institutions employing a broad trauma-informed approach aim to prioritize well-being and safety for all patients, regardless of healthcare professional knowledge of each patient’s background.
