Summary

There are three editions of the collected works of Stefan George. The eighteen-volume Gesamt-Ausgabe der Werke, endgültige Fassung was arranged by George himself, published by the Georg Bondi Verlag in Berlin between 1927 and 1934, and reprinted in a reduced format by the Küpper Verlag between 1964 and 1969. In 1958 the Küpper Verlag in Munich and Düsseldorf published the Werke. Ausgabe in zwei Bänden, edited by Robert Boehringer. This two-volume edition contains all the texts of the eighteen-volume edition, but not the illustrations and appendices of the original edition. The two-volume edition was reprinted with additional texts from George's literary estate (Nachlaß) in 1968, 1976, and, edited by Georg Peter Landmann, in 1984 by the Klett-Cotta Verlag in Stuttgart. Since the Werke: Ausgabe in zwei Bänden is the most accessible edition, references (by volume and page number) in this Companion, unless otherwise noted, are to this edition. Since 1982 the Klett-Cotta Verlag has been publishing a new edition with appendices, Sämtliche Werke in 18 Bänden, edited by Georg Peter Landmann and Ute Oelmann. To date, thirteen volumes have been published.

Unless otherwise noted, translations of the titles of George's volumes of poetry and of individual poems are taken from Olga Marx and Ernst Morwitz, trans., The Works of Stefan George: Rendered into English. 2nd, revised and enlarged edition (Chapel Hill, NC: U of North Carolina P, 1974).

George's journal Blätter für die Kunst, whose nominal editor was

C. A. Klein, was published between 1892 and 1919 in twelve volumes. Küpper Verlag published a complete reprint in six volumes with an introduction by Robert Boehringer in 1968. Unless otherwise noted, references in this Companion are to this edition and will be abbreviated BfdK, followed by volume number (and, where appropriate, issue number) and page number.
