Modernisation leads to rising complexity. Internal dynamics in the development of science, technology, culture and economy increase complexity. Cognitive ability both raises complexity and enables one to cope with complexity. Further future challenges include resource depletion, demographic change and rising inequality. They increase the difficulties and weaken the possibilities of managing future problems. Predictions for the twenty-first century are outlined.
