Summary
Awaiting is an attitude in which one lets something which is not yet present bear on one. Heidegger tells us, “as care, Dasein is essentially ahead of itself” (SZ 337). Thus, every mode of understanding the future discloses Dasein’s ability-to-be. Awaiting designates the inauthentic mode of being related to the future (and anticipation designates its authentic mode; for more on anticipation, see death).
