Summary
To prepare our book, we found it necessary to go out in the field and collect data on the present use of technology in international arbitration. Through a Survey, we measured the extent to which arbitration practitioners avail themselves of online and electronic tools and services, in offline arbitration, in view of a more efficient and cost-effective procedure. We also examined how the Internet, and more particularly social media, affects arbitration practitioners, their strategies, and their behaviour. The results of the Survey are useful in the detection of questions that are of great practical importance, and also provide a significant justification for this book. We understood that arbitration practitioners were integrating new technologies into their practices, but in rather spontaneous and reactive ways. Also, we found that practitioners, compared to other service industries, are rather hesitant to take advantage of the new technologies. This led us to conclude that there is still much room for exploring the true potential of technologies in international arbitration.
