The following table gives the canons contained in William Lyndwood's Provinciale, as printed in the Oxford edition of 1679, with their sources. Lyndwood's own stated sources are listed first, with an explanation of them based on modern critical research. For canons before 1313 critical editions exist, and they are given preference here, with Lyndwood's date placed in brackets. For post-1313 canons there is no critical edition, and Lyndwood's dates and order have been retained, unless there is good evidence to believe otherwise. In these cases, however, the reader is directed to the critical assessment of the source material given at the beginning of the list.

Lyndwood s work was patterned on the Decretales or Liber extra (X) of Pope Gregory IX, issued on 5 September 1234, and each chapter is collated with that collection, for ease of reference. The numbers in parentheses after individual canons refer to the page numbers in the 1679 edition.

Lyndwood's Sources

1. Archbishop Stephen Langton (1207-28). His canons were promulgated at the council of Oxford, 17 April 1222. Modern scholarship has confirmed this identification.

2. Archbishop Richard Wethershed (1229-31). His canons were supposedly issued in 1229, but have now been shown to belong to Archbishop Richard of Dover (1174-84), who published them in 1175 (WBB, 983-92) However, all but three of Dover's canons were in turn culled from earlier sources, which found their way into the Decretum Gratiani. The five canons cited by Lyndwood may be traced back as follows:

1: Pope Alexander III (1159-81) to Bishop Roger of Worcester (1163-79); there is no date, but it must have been sometime in the years 1164-74).

5: A collage of four decretals, one of Pope Urban II (1088-99) (D, 70 c. 2 - Fr, I, 257); one of Pope Innocent I (401-17) (D, 71 c. 2 - Fr, I, 258); canon 6 of the council of Chalcedon, 451 (D, 70 с. 1 - Fr, I, 257 - C.O.D., 90) and canon 21 of the third council of Carthage, 397 (D, 72 c. 2 - Fr, 1,259-60).
