Summary

A patient is scheduled for an emergency drainage of an abscess. Hypothyroidism was diagnosed 12 hours ago during her emergency room admission. Her total thyroxine (T4) is less than 2 μg/dL (normal values are 4.5–10 μg/dL) and her thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level is elevated. What are your anesthetic concerns? What anesthetic would you choose? What specific post-operative complications would you expect?
