Dodder is a parasitic weed that is troublesome to the growth of many plants. Our study shows that this invasive species contains strong allelopathic potential, exerting strong inhibition against the growth of indicator plants and noxious paddy weeds in bioassay and pot trials. In a greenhouse, incorporation of 0.5 t ha−1 of dried dodder plants to paddy soil reduced spontaneous growth of paddy weeds by about 50%, whereas the 1.5 to 2 t ha−1 dose suppressed biomass of paddy weeds by more than 75% and completely controlled emergence of barnyardgrass and monochoria. By the use of a separation resin, 22 compounds were separated from dodder and identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry as belonging to terpenes, long-chain fatty acids, phenols, phenolic acids, and lactone. Among these compounds, 15 substances were quantified and tested for their herbicidal activity. Quantity of cinnamic acid was the highest (37.3 mg g−1), followed by dihydro-5,6-dehydrokavain (DDK; 6.0 mg g−1), myristic acid (3.2 mg g−1), and methyl cinnamate (2.1 mg g−1), whereas the amounts of other compounds were between 0.01 and 0.1 mg g−1. It is suggested that the content of the terpenes within dodder, which was rather high in amount (0.41–2.1 mg g−1), correlated to its strength of chemical cues to find host plants. Cinnamic acid, DDK, methyl cinnamate, and vanillin exerted the most potent herbicidal activities against radish growth. Findings of this study propose that cinnamic acid, DDK, and methyl cinnamate are responsible for its strong phytotoxic action of dodder plants. However, whether these plant growth inhibitors and other compounds detected from the dodder can suppress emergence of their hosts as well as contributing to its strong invasiveness needs further elucidation.

Phenotypic plasticity and rapid evolution are two important strategies by which invasive species adapt to a wide range of environments and consequently are closely associated with plant invasion. To test their importance in invasion success of Crofton weed, we examined the phenotypic response and genetic variation of the weed by conducting a field investigation, common garden experiments, and intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) marker analysis on 16 populations in China. Molecular markers revealed low genetic variation among and within the sampled populations. There were significant differences in leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), and seed number (SN) among field populations, and plasticity index (PIv) for LA, SLA, and SN were 0.62, 0.46 and 0.85, respectively. Regression analyses revealed a significant quadratic effect of latitude of population origin on LA, SLA, and SN based on field data but not on traits in the common garden experiments (greenhouse and open air). Plants from different populations showed similar reaction norms across the two common gardens for functional traits. LA, SLA, aboveground biomass, plant height at harvest, first flowering day, and life span were higher in the greenhouse than in the open-air garden, whereas SN was lower. Growth conditions (greenhouse vs. open air) and the interactions between growth condition and population origin significantly affect plant traits. The combined evidence suggests high phenotypic plasticity but low genetically based variation for functional traits of Crofton weed in the invaded range. Therefore, we suggest that phenotypic plasticity is the primary strategy for Crofton weed as an aggressive invader that can adapt to diverse environments in China.

Mexican sunflower is a native species of North and Central America that was introduced into China early last century, but it has widely naturalized and become a harmful invasive plant in tropical and subtropical regions in South China. Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were employed to assess genetic diversity and variation in Mexican sunflower populations from China and neighboring regions. The karyotypes of populations were also studied. Our research showed high levels of genetic diversity in all populations. The lowest genetic diversity estimates were represented in two populations in Laos, suggesting prevention of new introductions into Laos is critical. Partitioning of genetic variance revealed that genetic variation was mostly found within populations, and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic means (UPGMA) analysis showed that the introductions into China and Laos were independent. There were no obvious correlations between genetic relationships and geographic distance of populations in China, consistent with the human associated dispersal history of Mexican sunflower. Previous cytological data and our chromosome count (2n = 34) and karyotype analysis showed chromosome stability among populations. The high levels of genetic diversity within invasive Mexican sunflower populations could be challenging for its management in China, and further expansion and potential negative effects on ecological systems of this plant should be monitored.

Velvetleaf is difficult to control in corn and soybean and the seed can persist in soil for many years. Seven cultural and tillage practices were established in 1974 on a site heavily infested with velvetleaf to determine the time required to eradicate velvetleaf seed from the soil. A rapid decline in velvetleaf seed population in the top 23 cm of soil occurred during the first 5 yr of this study. In the fifth year, the chemical fallow and continuous alfalfa treatments had 37 and 56% of the original velvetleaf seed population remaining, respectively. In the 17th year, soils in these treatments that had received no tillage since study initiation still contained 15 and 25% of the original velvetleaf seed population, respectively. Systems involving moldboard plowing with continuous-tillage fallow, continuous cropping of corn or oat, or an annual corn and soybean rotation had a more rapid decline in the velvetleaf seed population in soil compared to the chemical fallow and continuous alfalfa treatment. After 17 yr, soil in any system that had received at least one moldboard plowing per year still contained 1 to 3 million velvetleaf seed ha−1, which is only 0.8 to 2.5% of the initial viable seed population. Nearly 100% of the seed remaining in the soil in the 17th year for all treatments was still viable.

Previous studies have demonstrated that emergence and growth of Powell amaranth is inhibited in soils where buckwheat has been grown and incorporated. The primary objectives of this research were to (1) evaluate the possible role of allelopathy in explaining that suppression; (2) distinguish between suppression caused by incorporation of fresh buckwheat residues from suppression caused by changes in soil during buckwheat growth; and (3) quantify the relative importance of buckwheat root vs. shoot tissues in suppression. When all buckwheat plant parts were removed from soil in which buckwheat was grown, Powell amaranth emergence was not suppressed, but growth was reduced 70% compared to bare soil. Addition of buckwheat shoots, but not roots to these soils reduced emergence by 80%, and contributed to additional reduction in growth. Addition of chemically activated carbon did not increase emergence or growth in buckwheat-amended soil. However, thermally activated carbon resulted in greater adsorption of phenolics than chemically activated carbon and alleviated suppression of Powell amaranth in buckwheat-amended, high organic-matter soils. However, suppression was not overcome on mineral soils. In addition to adsorbing phenolics, activated carbon changed the nitrogen (N) content and electrical conductivity of soil extracts. Aqueous shoot extracts of buckwheat stimulated Powell amaranth germination slightly, but inhibited radicle growth. Aqueous soil extracts from buckwheat-amended soil inhibited germination of Powell amaranth compared with extracts from unamended soil. Results suggest that emergence suppression of Powell amaranth by buckwheat residues might be due to allelopathic compounds concentrated in the shoot tissues. However, these inhibitory effects appear to depend on interactions of buckwheat residues with soils. In contrast, suppression of growth of Powell amaranth appears to be associated primarily with lower N availability in buckwheat-grown soils.

The sagebrush (Artemisia)-grass ecosystem is an extensive and important rangeland type in the western United States. Estimates of total area of this ecosystem vary from 38 million ha (21, 22) to 109 million ha (3). Of the sagebrush-grass rangelands, 88% are degraded to the point that they are producing 50% or less of their forage potential (22). Low forage production on these rangelands has been caused by overgrazing and other past land abuses (24) resulting in severe depletion of native perennial grasses, dominance of brush, and, on millions of hectares, downy brome (Bromus tectorum L. # BROTE) dominance of the understory.

Studies were conducted to determine the effect on absorption and metabolism of atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] by atrazine-susceptible (S) and -resistant (R) biotypes of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.) and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.). The response of isolated chloroplasts of susceptible and resistant biotypes of each species was also studied. In both species the two biotypes absorbed atrazine equally well and were unable to differentially metabolize the herbicide. The photochemical activity of R chloroplasts isolated from each species was not inhibited by atrazine but S chloroplasts were severely inhibited.

Glyphosate [(N-phosphonomethyl) glycine] was evaluated for three years as a foliar herbicide for the control of johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.]. In the greenhouse, maximum rhizome kill resulted from foliar applications of glyphosate at 1.12 to 2.24 kg/ha. In several field studies, plowing from 4 to 21 days following glyphosate application had little effect on johnsongrass control; plowing within 0.5 hr following glyphosate application resulted in less control than when plowing was delayed for 12 days. In stage of growth studies, control was better when glyphosate was applied to johnsongrass in the boot to full head stage than earlier when johnsongrass was 45 to 60 cm in height. In ‘York’ soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], glyphosate at 1.12 to 2.24 kg/ha applied 12 to 14 days prior to plowing and trifluralin (a,a,a-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine) incorporated prior to planting provided good johnsongrass control. In ‘3369A’ corn (Zea mays L.) directed postemergence applications of glyphosate provided good johnsongrass control but caused extensive crop injury.

In the greenhouse, the methyl ester of diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-diclorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoic acid} as a postemergence application at 1.1 kg/ha ai did not affect the growth of the seven dicotyledonous crops with the exception of slight injury to yellow [white] mustard (Brassica hirta Moench). Of the 13 gramineous species, corn (Zea mays L.), green foxtail [Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv.], oats (Avena sativa L.) wild oats (Avena fatua L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], and timothy (Phleum pratense L.) were rated highly susceptible, while barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), bromegrass [smooth brome] (Bromus inermis Leyss.), durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.), intermediate wheatgrass [Agropyron intermedium (Host) Beauv.], Russian wild ryegrass (Elymus junceus Fisch.), triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were relatively tolerant. Residue of diclofop in the soil partially controlled green foxtail which was seeded 3 weeks after herbicide application. Whether applied to wild oat shoots or roots, diclofop affected the entire plant, but growth reduction was great when applied to the shoots. Field results confirmed that foliar application gave the best weed control resulting in larger wheat yield increases. Wild oat control was greatly enhanced when an adjuvant was added to diclofop. This enhanced herbicidal activity appeared to have no effect on tolerance of barley at 0.8 kg/ha nor wheat at 1.1 kg/ha. Increasing the temperature from 12 to 28 C decreased wild oat control from diclofop at 1.1 kg/ha. In the field, diclofop at rates ranging from 0.8 to 2.2 kg/ha gave good control of wild oats and green foxtail resulting in significantly increased wheat yield compared to the checks. However, barley yield increases were obtained only at the rates from 0.8 to 1.1 kg/ha, indicating that at the higher rates barley was less tolerant than wheat. The 0.6 kg/ha rate with an adjuvant gave adequate weed control and significant barley yield increases over the checks, when evaluated on five barley cultivars.

Targeting weed patches for site-specific herbicide applications potentially represents cost savings for operators, reduction in environmental herbicide effects, and increased efficiency of weed control. An experiment was initiated in a no-till corn field in Ontario, Canada, in 1998 and was continued in rotation with no-till soybeans in 1999. Weeds were intensively scouted, and distribution maps of the most common weeds (field horsetail, spiny sowthistle, dandelion, and common lambsquarters) were generated for both years. A prescription map for each plot was made using the weed density maps. Treatment decisions were based on a weed threshold value of 1 shoot m−2. Four herbicide treatments were compared: a conventional broadcast, a site-specific application targeting weed patches only, and two combinations of broadcast and site-specific applications. Treatments were applied using a direct-injection sprayer. Efficacy of weed control and yield were compared among treatments. In 1998 and 1999 there were no differences in the level of weed control or yield among treatments. The average percent area sprayed was reduced as much as 26% in the site-specific treatment in 1998 and up to 59% in the site-specific and broadcast combination treatments in 1999. For those species present in the field, patches ranged from highly aggregated to completely random, and patch stability ranged from very stable to very unstable over the 2 yr.

Grain sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers.) was grown in combination with varying densities and durations of tall waterhemp (Acnida altissima Riddell) during 1964 and 1965 at Manhattan, Kansas. As waterhemp density and duration increased, sorghum fodder and grain yields were reduced. Yields of both species and competitive influence of waterhemp were highest during the year of high rainfall and supplemental N fertility. The net competitive influence of waterhemp on sorghum grain was accounted for principally by reduced seed size. Competition for soil moisture in 1965 was greatest when weeds remained full-season, and was most pronounced early in the season at soil depths below 20 inches.

Interest in the substituted urea compounds for their herbicidal properties was precipitated by Bucha and Todd's (3) report that 3–(p–chlorophenyl)–1,1–dimethylurea (monuron) was extremely phytotoxic. Freed (6) reported that only asymmetrically substituted ureas are effective as herbicides. Substitution on the para position was reported to result in greatest activity followed by meta. An ortho substitution reduced activity to half or less than that of the comparable para substitution.

Under greenhouse conditions, approximately 50% visible control of bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. ♯3 CYNDA], quackgrass [Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv. ♯ AGRRE], and wirestem muhly (Muhlenbergia frondosa L. ♯ MUHFR) was obtained using 0.56 kg/ha glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine], CGA-82725 {2-propynyl-2-[4-([3,5-dichloro-2-pyridinyl] oxy) oxy)phenoxy propanoate}, 0.28 kg/ha fluazifop-butyl {(±)-butyl 2-[4-[(5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl)oxy] phenoxy] propanoate}, sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one}, and 0.11 kg/ha haloxyfop-methyl [methyl 2-(4-((3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl)oxy)phenoxy)propanoate]. Except for quackgrass, sethoxydim and fluazifop-butyl reduced shoot regrowth in plants clipped 3 to 6 h after treatment Sethoxydim required a 24-h duration on quackgrass foliage to reduce growth. Fresh weights of haloxyfop-methyl- and CGA-82725-treated plants required a 12- to 24-h clipping for reduced regrowth in all species. For all herbicides and species tested, little or no regrowth occurred when plants were clipped 48 h after treatment. A 1-h interval between split applications of sethoxydim and a 24-h interval between split applications of fluazifop-butyl and haloxyfop-methyl reduced fresh weights of bermudagrass regrowth when compared to an equivalent single rate. Regrowth of treated quackgrass indicated a 24-h interval was required for reductions with split applications of sethoxydim, fluazifop-butyl, and haloxyfop-methyl. Wirestem muhly regrowth was reduced after a 1-h interval between applications. In all species, superior control was obtained using two half-rate applications compared to one full-rate application.

Weed removal experiments in dry edible beans were conducted during 1992 and 1993 at Crookston and Staples, MN. Ten manual weed removal treatments were studied to determine when a natural infestation of weeds first reduced dry bean yield, and when weed removal could be discontinued without further loss of seed yield. Major weeds in order of average biomass production on weedy check plots at dry bean harvest over locations and years were wild mustard, foxtail spp., redroot pigweed, common ragweed, wild buckwheat, hairy nightshade, and common lambsquarters. Hairy nightshade also emerged late in the growing season and could negatively affect harvest efficiency and stain navy beans. Weed removal treatments had little effect on dry bean stands or 100-seed weights of harvested dry bean seed. The critical period for weed control in dry beans was 3 to 5 or 6 weeks after planting (WAP). Thus, weed control practices should begin no later than 3 WAP and continue until at least 5 or 6 WAP for maximum dry bean yields.

Photosynthesis in corn (Zea mays L. ‘Pioneer 3369A’) was inhibited 25% by atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] after a 2-h root exposure in nutrient solution. Photosynthesis of the treated plants had completely recovered 21.4 h after removal from the treatment solution. Recovery of photosynthesis from second and third successive atrazine treatments required only 10.3 h and 4.0 h, respectively. Atrazine metabolism rates in corn plants after 1, 2, or 3 successive 4-h treatment periods, where each treatment period was followed by a 12-h recovery period, showed increased rates of metabolism of atrazine during each recovery time. An increased level of glutathione-S-atrazine was found following the first 4-h atrazine treatment and 12-h recovery. The enhanced production of GS-atrazine was maintained throughout subsequent exposures and recoveries. An inverse correlation (r2 = 0.992) was found between the increase in GS-atrazine production following each 4-h atrazine exposure and the time required for corn plants to recover from atrazine-induced photosynthesis inhibition. Enhanced detoxification of atrazine by corn plants pretreated with atrazine was indicated. No enhanced tolerance to other herbicides was observed from atrazine pretreatment. This phenomenon is similar to that described for the enhanced detoxification of several insecticides in animal systems.

Weedy red rice is a troublesome weed problem in rice fields of the southern United States. Typically, red rice plants are much taller than rice cultivars, and most biotypes are either awnless with straw-colored hulls (strawhull) or have long awns with black-colored hulls (blackhull). Outcrossing between rice and red rice occurs at low rates, resulting in a broad array of plant types. Simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used to evaluate the genetic backgrounds of atypical red rice types obtained from rice farms in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Mississippi, in comparison to standard red rice types and rice cultivars. Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) and population structure analysis of atypical red rice accessions suggested that short-stature awnless (LhtsA−) and awned (LhtsA+) types, each representing a total of about 5% of a 460-accession collection, usually were closely genetically related to their normal-sized counterparts, and not with cultivated rice. A short-awned, intermediate height type, ‘Sawn’, representing about 4% of the accessions was genetically distinct from all of the other types. Key alleles in Sawn types appeared to be shared by both standard awnless (StdRRA−) and awned (StdRRA+) red rice, suggesting that Sawn types could have arisen from gene flow between awned and awnless red rice types.

Potential effectiveness of harvest weed seed control (HWSC) systems depends upon seed shatter of the target weed species at crop maturity, enabling its collection and processing at crop harvest. However, seed retention likely is influenced by agroecological and environmental factors. In 2016 and 2017, we assessed seed-shatter phenology in 13 economically important broadleaf weed species in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] from crop physiological maturity to 4 wk after physiological maturity at multiple sites spread across 14 states in the southern, northern, and mid-Atlantic United States. Greater proportions of seeds were retained by weeds in southern latitudes and shatter rate increased at northern latitudes. Amaranthus spp. seed shatter was low (0% to 2%), whereas shatter varied widely in common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) (2% to 90%) over the weeks following soybean physiological maturity. Overall, the broadleaf species studied shattered less than 10% of their seeds by soybean harvest. Our results suggest that some of the broadleaf species with greater seed retention rates in the weeks following soybean physiological maturity may be good candidates for HWSC.

In recent years weed research workers have begun to investigate the possibility of using herbicides for the selective control of wild oats (Avena fatua L.) in field crops. One of the first herbicides to show promise for the control of wild oats was IPC (isopropyl N–phenylcarbamate). Although this herbicide was effective on wild oats, only a few broad-leafed crops proved tolerant to it. More recently, another herbicide, CDAA (2–chloro–N,N–diallylacetamide), has been found to be effective in controlling wild oats without damaging corn and soybeans, and several field tests indicate that it may be used successfully in flax. To be effective both herbicides must be applied as pre-emergence or pre-planting treatments. They kill wild oats as the wild oats germinate, and consequently must be placed in the vicinity of the germinating seed if a good job of killing is to be done.

The rate of disappearance of a herbicide from soil is one of the key properties in determining its utility. In some cases it is desirable that a selected herbicidal concentration be maintained in the soil as long as possible. In other cases, rapid dissipation is desirable after a given effect has been produced. Leaching is a primary factor in the removal of many herbicides from soil.

Rhinocyllus conicus Froel. (Col.: Curculionidae) larvae feeding within the capitula of Carduus thistles may reduce production of viable seeds. Each R. conicus larva destroyed 9.7 developing musk thistle (Carduus nutans L.) seeds. An average musk thistle capitulum, 29.2 mm diameter, produced 15.3 viable achenes per millimeter of diameter for an average of 447 viable seeds. Surveys of 23 release sites in Virginia revealed that thistles at 12 had sustained a population of weevils. Weevil eggs at six sites have increased in abundance, and establishment appears assured. Colonization of R. conicus was enhanced by spring or early summer releases; larger stocks of insects were required for late summer releases. The weevils exhibited better synchronization with musk thistle than with plumeless thistle (Carduus acanthoides L.); and best success has been achieved where extensive, persistent stands of musk thistle were available.
