While most of the exoplanets have been found orbiting around solar-type stars, low-mass stars have recently been recognized as ideal exo-life laboratory. Currently, stellar activity is one of the limiting factors for the characterization of Earth-twins and for assessing their habitability: understanding the activity of M dwarfs is thus crucial. In this contribution I present the spectroscopic analysis of the quiet early-M dwarfs monitored within the HADES (HArps-n red Dwarf Exoplanet Survey) radial velocity survey. The spectra allow us to analyze simultaneously the Ca ii H&K doublet and the Hydrogen Balmer series, while the intensive follow up gives us a large number of spectra ( 100) for each target. We complement this dataset with ground-based follow-up photometry and archival X-ray data. I present our results on the activity-rotation-stellar parameters and flux-flux relationships, and discuss the correlation of emission fluxes at low activity levels and the evolution timescales of active regions.

Radio observations allow us to identify a wide range of active galactic nuclei (AGN), which play a significant role in the evolution of galaxies. Amongst AGN at low radio-luminosities is the ‘radio-quiet’ quasar (RQQ) population, but how they contribute to the total radio emission is under debate, with previous studies arguing that it is predominantly through star formation. In this talk, SVW summarised the results of recent papers on RQQs, including the use of far-infrared data to disentangle the radio emission from the AGN and that from star formation. This provides evidence that black-hole accretion, instead, dominates the radio emission in RQQs. In addition, we find that this accretion-related emission is correlated with the optical luminosity of the quasar, whilst a weaker luminosity-dependence is evident for the radio emission connected with star formation. What remains unclear is the process by which this accretion-related emission is produced. Understanding this for RQQs will then allow us to investigate how this type of AGN influences its surroundings. Such studies have important implications for modelling AGN feedback, and for determining the accretion and star-formation histories of the Universe.

Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has enabled us to detect [Oiii] 88 μm line even at z > 9. To study the properties of high-redshift [Oiii] emitters, we calculate [Oiii] luminosities of galaxies in a cosmological simulation by applying a physical model of Hii region and using the photoionization code cloudy. We find that the [Oiii] 88 μm luminosity, LOIII,88, scales with SFR with slightly larger LOIII,88 than a local relation. Some [Oiii] emitters have extended disk-like structure. We propose to use the ratio between [Oiii] 88 μm line and [Oiii] 5007 Å line, which can be detected with James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), to estimate the gas density and the metallicity in HII region of high-redshift [Oiii] emitters.

We have studied turbulent plasma as a complex system applying the method known as Horizontal Visibility Graph (HVG) to obtain the Kullback-Leibler Divergence (KLD) as a first approach to characterize the reversibility of the time series of the magnetic fluctuations. For this, we have developed the method on Particle In Cell (PIC) simulations for a magnetized plasma and on solar wind magnetic time series, considering slow and fast wind. Our numerical results show that low irreversibility values are verified for magnetic field time series associated with Maxwellian distributions. In addition, considering the solar wind plasma, our preliminary results seem to indicate that greater irreversibility degrees are reached by the magnetic field associated with slow solar wind.

We still do not understand the physical mechanisms that are responsible for suppressing star formation in galaxies. Observations of post-starburst galaxies, whose spectra indicate that an intense period of star formation was followed by rapid quenching, are the ideal sample to probe the quenching process. We have conducted an ALMA survey of CO(2-1) in 13 of these recently- quenched galaxies at z ∼ 0.7 – high enough redshift that these galaxies likely just concluded their primary epoch of star formation, but low enough redshift for follow-up observations to be feasible. Our observations reveal a stunning diversity of molecular gas properties: despite a uniform optical selection and low apparent SFRs, the detected galaxies span a factor of > 30 in CO luminosity and have inferred gas fractions ranging from < 1% to 20%. These observations indicate that quenching does not require the total removal or depletion of molecular gas. No current models of the quenching process can fully explain our results.

We present results of full general relativistic (GR), three-dimensional (3D) core-collapse simulation of a massive star with multi-energy neutrino transport. Using a 70Mȯ zero-metallicity star, we show that the black-hole (BH) formation occurs at ∼ 300 ms after bounce. At a few ∼ 10 ms before the BH formation, we find that the stalled bounce shock is revived by neutrino heating from the forming hot proto-neutron star (PNS), which is aided by vigorous convection behind the shock. Our numerical results present the first evidence to validate the BH formation by the so-called fallback scenario. Furthermore we present results from a rapidly rotating core-collapse model of a 27Mȯ star that is trending towards an explosion. We point out that the correlated neutrino and gravitational-wave signatures, if detected, could provide a smoking-gun evidence of rapid rotation of the newly-born PNS.

We here present the general outline of the project “Open up, Sky!”, a pilot project of astronomy education in a Juvenile detention institution in Sardinia, Italy. The project is still in progress, and we report here the first preliminary results.

We combine ALMA and MUSE-NFM (narrow field mode, with full four-laser adaptive optics correction) data at 0.15 arcsec spatial resolution of the archetypical AGN-starburst “composite” galaxy NGC 7130. We present the discovery of a small 0″.2 (60 pc) radius kinematically decoupled core or small bi-polar outflow, as well as a larger-scale outflow. We confirm the existence of star-forming knots arranged in an 0″.58 (185 pc) radius ring around the Seyfert 1.9 nucleus, previously observed from UV and optical Hubble Space Telescope and CO(6-5) ALMA imaging. An extinction map derived from the MUSE data highlights the regions of enhanced CO emission as clearly seen in the ALMA data. We determine the position of the nucleus as the location of a peak in gas velocity dispersion. A plume of material extends towards the NE from the nucleus until at least the edge of our field of view at 2″ (640 pc) radius which we interpret as an outflow originating in the AGN. The plume is not visible morphologically, but is clearly characterised in our data by emission lines ratios characteristic of AGN emission, enhanced gas velocity dispersion, and distinct non-circular gas velocities. Its orientation is roughly perpendicular to the line of nodes of the rotating host galaxy disk. An 0″.2-radius circumnuclear area of positive and negative velocities indicates a tiny inner disk or a small bipolar outflow, only observable when combining the integral field spectroscopic capabilities of MUSE with full adaptive optics.

We employ optical spectroscopy from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) combined with X-ray and radio data to study the highly-ionized gas (HIG) phase of the feedback in a sample of five local nearby Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Thanks to the superb field of view and sensitivity of MUSE, we found that the HIG, traced by the coronal line [Fe vii] λ6089, extends to scales not seen before, from 700 pc in Circinus and up to ∼2 kpc in NGC 5728 and NGC 3393. The gas morphology is complex, following closely the radio jet and the X-ray emission. Emission line ratios suggest gas excitation by shocks produced by the passage of the radio jet. This scenario is further supported by the physical conditions derived for the HIG, stressing the importance of the mechanical feedback in AGN with low-power radio jets.

Modern cosmological simulations suggest that the hierarchical assembly of dark matter halos provided the gravitational wells that allowed the primordial gases to form stars and galaxies inside them. The first galaxies comprised of the first systems of stars gravitationally bound in dark matter halos are naturally recognized as the building blocks of early Universe. To understand the formation of the first galaxies, we use an adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) cosmological code, Enzo to simulate the formation and evolution of the first galaxies. We first model an isolated galaxy by considering much microphysics such as star formation, stellar feedback, and primordial gas cooling. To examine the effect of Pop III stellar feedback to the first galaxy formation, we adjust the initial temperature, density distribution and metallicity distributions by assuming different IMFs of the first stars. Our results suggest that star formation in the first galaxies is sensitive to the initial conditions of Pop III supernovae and their remnants. Our study can help to correlate the populations of the first stars and supernovae to star formation inside these first galaxies which may be soon observed by the (James Webb Space Telescope JWST).

We use the LLAMA survey to study the density and outflow rate of ionized gas in a complete volume limited sample of local (<40 Mpc) luminous (43.0 < log LAGN(erg/s) < 44.5) AGN selected by very hard 14-195 keV X-rays. The detailed data available for this survey enable us to measure the density of the outflowing ionized gas in the central 300 pc of these AGN using three different and independent methods (the standard [SII] doublet ratio; a method comparing [OII] and [SII] ratios that include auroral and transauroral lines; and a recently proposed method based on the ionization parameter). For each method there is, as expected, a modest spread of densities among the AGN in the sample. But remarkably, the median densities for each method differ hugely, by an order of magnitude from below 400 cm-3 to almost 5000 cm-3. We discuss how the derived densities can be reconciled, and what the impact is on the implied outflow rate.

We present the design and development of accessibleWe have shortened the running head. Please check. activities in astronomy for blind persons in Puerto Rico. We design for a diverse audience that sees from different perspectives, but with the same purpose: to know and discover the Universe. We adapt tactile materials to develop themes that require visual images. We design and develop three-dimensional tactile material to offer blind people the opportunity to get the conceptual idea of the specific topic under consideration. Listening and designing bearing in mind the voice of blind people with their different life experiences is essential. Through years of experience (2006 – 2020) we have learned to use new strategies in the design and development of tactile materials. We recognize that what we have achieved to date has been possible through the exchange of efforts, collaboration, and volunteering. In recent months, we have been publishing videos with each of the tactile materials, with the purpose of contributing to the literacy of astronomy worldwide.

The mass accretion rate determines the black hole accretion mode and the corresponding efficiency of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) feedback. In large-scale simulations studying galaxy formation and evolution, the Bondi radius can be at most marginally resolved. In these simulations, the Bondi accretion formula is always used to estimate the black hole accretion rate. The Bondi solution can not represent the real accretion process. We perform 77 simulations with varying density and temperature at Bondi radius. We find a formula to calculate the black hole accretion rate based on gas density and temperature at Bondi radius. We find that the formula can accurately predict the luminosity of observed low-luminosity AGNs. This formula can be used in sub-grid models in large-scale simulations with AGNs feedback.

Starburst galaxies at z ∼ 2 – 4 are among the most intensely star-forming galaxies in the universe. The way they accrete their gas to form stars at such high rates is still a controversial issue. ALMA has detected the CH+ (J = 1-0) line in emission and/or absorption in all the gravitationally lensed starburst galaxies targeted so far at z ∼ 3. Its unique spectroscopic and chemical properties enable CH+ to highlight the sites of most intense dissipation of mechanical energy. The absorption lines reveal highly turbulent, massive reservoirs of low-density molecular gas. The broad emission lines, arising in myriad UV-irradiated molecular shocks, reveal powerful galactic winds. The CH+ lines therefore probe the fate of prodigious energy releases, due to infall and/or outflows, and primarily stored in turbulence before being radiated by cool molecular gas. The turbulent reservoirs act as mass and energy buffers over the duration of the starburst phase.

An interesting problem in plasma physics, when approached from the point of view of Statistical Mechanics is to obtain properties of collisionless plasmas, which are described by the Vlasov equation. Through what we call the Ehrenfest procedure, which uses statistical mechanical relations we obtain expectation value relations for arbitrary observables, which allows us to study the dynamics of the Earth's Outer Radiation Belt. Focusing on the velocity fluctuations, the width of the distribution function and the pitch angle, a computer simulation was performed to describe the system in order to compare and test the Ehrenfest approach. Our results show that the change in the average width of the distribution follows the analytical relation. However, for the velocity fluctuation results are not conclusive yet and require more exploration. It remains as future work to verify the relation for the pitch angle.

Photoionized outflows in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are thought to influence their circumnuclear and host galactic environment. However, the distance of the outflow with respect to the black hole is poorly constrained, which limits our understanding of the kinetic power by the outflow. Therefore, the impact of AGN outflows on their host galaxies is uncertain. If the density of the outflow is known, its distance can be derived. Density measurement via variability studies and density sensitive lines have been used, albeit not very effective in the X-ray band. Good measurements are rather demanding or challenging for the current generation of (grating) spectrometers. The next generation of spectrometers will certainly provide data with better quality and large quantity, leading to tight constraints on the location and the kinetic power of AGN outflows. This contribution summarizes the state-of-the-art in this field.

Observations performed in the last decades have shown that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and cosmic structures are not separate elements of the Universe. While galaxies extend on spatial scales about ten orders of magnitude larger than the horizon of SMBHs, black holes would not exist without matter feeding them, and cosmic structures would not be the same without feedback from SMBHs. Powerful winds/jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) may be the basis of this co-evolution. Synergistic observations in the X-rays and other wavebands have been proven to be fundamental to map AGN winds from the event horizon up to galaxy scales, providing a promising avenue to study the multi-phase SMBH feeding and feedback processes. Moreover, a spatially resolved, spectroscopic analysis of AGN in clusters will allow us to probe the multiphase medium ranging from galactic up to cluster scales. Revolutionary advances are expected in the upcoming decade with new multi-wavelength observatories, ranging from radio to X-rays.

Understanding the formation of the first galaxies (FGs) is one of the most important topics in modern cosmology. In this proceeding, we briefly summarize the results of chemical enrichment from the Pop III supernovae during the assembly of the FGs. This early chemical enrichment plays an important role in triggering the Pop II star formation. Generally speaking, there are two major enrichment channels, inside-out (internal) and outside-in (external). Our results suggest that the external channel of chemical enrichment only works if the Pop III stars are very massive stars of 200–260 M⊙, which produce strong enough radiative feedback and supernova to derive the external metal mixing down to the center of the nearby halo.

A Round Table discussion on the future of Laboratory Astrophysics and the role of IAU Commission B5 was held on the fourth day of the conference to discuss how the IAU Laboratory Astrophysics Commission (B5) can best support the astronomy community and help promote laboratory astrophysics.

An Eclipse is an astronomical event that convenes a large audience. Few days before it, most of the community is aware of the event and the press is activated fully on it. The alignment recovers our most intrinsic human aspects, the curiosity, and enthusiasm for a natural phenomenon. This work is focused to enjoy and perceive it in three different ways: visually, listening, and in an artistic expression.

We focused on the construction of more than one hundred LightSound devices, which the main purpose is to record the light intensity and transform it into different tones. Besides, we created an artistic representation of the Eclipse motivated by the ancestral culture of the people residing in the totality zone. This music adds a sensorial joy to the eclipse event.
