The advent of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has enabled a new era for studies of the formation and assembly of distant galaxies. Cosmological deep field surveys with ALMA and other interferometers have flourished in the last few years covering wide ranges of galaxy properties and redshift, and allowing us to gain critical insights into the physical mechanisms behind the galaxy growth. Here, we present a brief review of recent studies that aim to characterize the interstellar medium properties of galaxies at high redshift (z > 1), focusing on blank-field ALMA surveys of dust continuum and molecular line emission. In particular, we show recent results from the ALMA Spectroscopic Survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ASPECS) large program.

The cult of the mountains, the wind and the request for “good rain” constitute today,the fusion of pre-Hispanic religious beliefs and meteorological knowledge in the agricultural development of central Mexico. Understanding this cult of the earth, from an indigenous perspective, led by certain specialists who have extensive knowledge of the landscape and meteorology, called Tiemperos, is a fundamental and necessary feature for the development of atmospheric sciences and the inclusion of rural villages in environmental research, carried out in certain areas of Mexico. Understanding the world in which these specialists are inserted is complex if one does not have a joint vision of the ethnographic data and the social relevance that the Tiemperos have on the communities. During 2018 I carried out an investigation on the request of rain and “goodweather” rituals that are carried out year after year in certain areas of central Mexico. From that initiative we developed an educational model and a prototype weather station that could be designed, built and adapted to the needs of each community, considering the traditions and teachings of the local Tiempero. Making use of microcontrollers, basic electronics, and a traditional indigenous technique, each station was built and designed with the people of the community where it would be installed, with the idea of involving and enriching scientific meteorological knowledge, which could be useful for each community. The project, still in development, included meteorological stations designed by the author and built by the communities, a series of educational exercises for children involved in the project and the proposal of a “goodweather” ritual using the data collected by the meteorological stations, with the intention of using technology and science-based information with traditional indigenous practices giving way to new forms of research and inclusion of science in remote communities in Mexico.

The dynamics of solar magnetoconvection spans a wide range of spatial and temporal scales and extends from the interior to the corona. Using 3D radiative MHD simulations, we investigate the complex interactions that drive various phenomena observed on the solar surface, in the low atmosphere, and in the corona. We present results of our recent simulations of coronal dynamics driven by underlying magnetoconvection and atmospheric processes, using the 3D radiative MHD code StellarBox (Wray et al. 2018). In particular, we focus on the evolution of thermodynamic properties and energy exchange across the different layers from the solar interior to the corona.

The outflows of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are important astrochemical laboratories, rich in molecular material and host to various chemical processes, including dust formation. Since the different chemistries are relatively easily probed, AGB outflows are ideal testbeds within the wider astrochemical community. Recent observations are pushing the limits of both our current chemical models and radiative transfer routines. Current chemical models are restricted by the completeness of their chemical networks and the accuracy of the reaction rates. The molecular abundances retrieved by radiative transfer routines are strongly dependent on collisional rates, which are often not measured or calculated for molecules of interest. To further our understanding of the chemistry within the outflow, collaboration with the laboratory astrophysics community is essential. This collaboration is mutually beneficial, as it in turn provides new science questions for laboratory experiments and computations.

Nuclear star clusters (NSCs) are stellar systems similar in size to globular clusters (GCs) but extremely dense, comparable only to some GCs and ultra-compact dwarfs. They are present in galaxies with a wide range of masses, morphologies and gas content. There are several formation scenarios proposed for the formation of such objects, such as the merger of GCs or extreme star formation caused by the inflow of gas. Recent studies show that the presence of an NSC is related to galaxy stellar mass. Moreover, it has been suggested that NSCs are more often found in high density environments. In our work, we use deep imaging of the core regions of the Coma cluster down to an absolute magnitude of –8.2 and found that in this environment the nucleation fraction is higher than in the Virgo and Fornax clusters. We find nucleated galaxies in Coma as faint as –11.2 mag.

Heiiλ1640 emission in the absence of other metal lines is the most sought-after emission line to detect and characterize metal free stellar populations. However, even recent stellar population models with sophisticated treatment of stellar evolution also lack sufficient He+ ionising photons to reproduce observed He 0.1em ii fluxes. We use VLT/MUSE GTO observations to compile a catalogue of 15 z ∼ 2–4 He ii λ1640 emitters from ∼10–30 hour pointings. We show that both He ii λ1640 detections and non-detections occupy similar distribution in UV absolute magnitudes. Rest-UV emission line analysis of our sample shows that the emission lines of our He ii λ1640 emitters are driven by star-formation in solar to moderately sub-solar (∼1/20th) metallicity conditions. However, we find that even after considering effects from binary stars, we are unable to reproduce the He ii λ1640 equivalent widths. Alternative mechanisms are necessary to compensate for the missing He+ ionising photons.

Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is thought to be key in shaping the life cycle of host galaxies by regulating star formation. Therefore, measuring the molecular gas reservoir out of which stars form is essential to understand the impact of AGN on star formation. In this talk I present an ongoing analysis to study the CO(J = 3−2) emission in a sample of 25 AGN at z ∼ 2 using ALMA observations. The CO properties of our AGN have been compared to normal (non-AGN) star-forming galaxies. The comparison between the two samples reveals that, on average, the CO luminosities of AGN at high stellar masses (log(M*/M⊙) > 11) are 0.5 dex lower than normal galaxies. We ascribe this difference to the AGN activity, which could be able to change the conditions of the gas through, e.g., excitation, heating or removal of CO.

This paper summarizes the talk given at this conference in which the cultural aspect of the low participation of women in science, mainly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas, is emphazised. A few personal recollections will be presented and some some striking numbers to illustrate the current situation will be given. In addition, some thought provoking ideas on what is known as “neurosexism” are explicited and a tribute is made to three women that overcame the challenges posed to them in different times in history (including current times) and helped paved the way to the new generation. However, there is still a long way to go. The inclusion of women and of other relegated sectors of society in scientific and technological activities is an important pending issue which will be achieved when our society as a whole reaches the necessary cultural maturity.

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to regulate star formation inside their host galaxies through “AGN feedback”. We summarise our on-going study of luminous AGN (z ∼ 0.2−3; LAGN,bol 1043 erg s−1), which is designed to search for observational signatures of feedback by combining observed star-formation rate (SFR) measurements from statistical samples with cosmological model predictions. Using the EAGLE hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, in combination with our Herschel + ALMA surveys, we show that – even in the presence of AGN feedback – we do not necessarily expect to see any relationships between average galaxy-wide SFRs and instantaneous AGN luminosities. We caution that the correlation with stellar mass for both SFR and AGN luminosity can contribute to apparent observed positive trends between these two quantities. On the other hand, the EAGLE simulations, which reproduce our observations, predict that a signature of AGN feedback can be seen in the wide specific SFR distributions of all massive galaxies (not just AGN hosts). Overall, whilst we can not rule out that AGN have an immediate small-scale impact on in-situ star-formation, all of our results are consistent with a feedback model where galaxy-wide in-situ star formation is not rapidly suppressed by AGN, but where the feedback likely acts over a longer timescale than a single AGN episode.

The completion of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) has led to the ability to make observations with unprecedented resolution at sub-millimeter wavelengths, allowing novel probes of the ISM and kinematics of high-redshift galaxies. Because they are magnified by foreground galaxies or clusters, gravitationally lensed galaxies allow the highest possible spatial resolution to be obtained, and/or a sharp reduction in the observing time required to detect faint objects or spectral lines. These benefits have made lensed galaxies useful benchmark systems for ALMA, enabling a wide variety of science cases. Here I focus in particular on spatially-resolved observations of massive galactic outflows in the very distant z > 4 universe, summarizing plausible tracers of the cold molecular phase of these outflows. The prospects of joint JWST and ALMA observations will be revolutionary, including the chance to take a full census of galactic outflows in multiple gas phases at matched spatial resolution.

In this paper it is shown that rope-rope magnetic reconnection in the solar wind can enhance multifractality in the inertial subrange and drive intermittent magnetic field turbulence. Additionally, it is shown that Lagrangian coherent structures can unveil the transport barriers of magnetic elements in the quiet Sun.

The properties of interstellar dust (ID) can be studied in great detail by making use of X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The radiation of X-rays sources is scattered and absorbed by dust grains in the interstellar medium. The X-ray band is especially suitable to study silicates - one of the main components of ID -since it contains the absorption edges of Si, Mg, O and Fe. In the Galaxy, we can use absorption features in the spectra of X-ray binaries to study the size distribution, composition and crystalline structure of grains. In order to derive these properties, it is necessary to acquire a database of detailed extinction cross sections models, that reflects the composition of the dust in the interstellar medium. We present the extinction profiles of a set of newly acquired measurements of 14 dust analogues at the Soleil Synchrotron facility in Paris, where we focus on silicates and the Si-K edge in particular, which is modelled with unprecedented accuracy. These models are used to analyse ID in the dense environments of the Galaxy.

Establishing the role of active galactic nuclei (AGN) during the formation of galaxies remains one of the greatest challenges of galaxy formation theory. Towards addressing this, we summarise our recent work investigating: (1) the physical drivers of ionised outflows and (2) observational signatures of the impact by jets/outflows on star formation and molecular gas content in AGN host galaxies. We confirm a connection between radio emission and extreme ionised gas kinematics in AGN hosts. Emission-line selected AGN are significantly more likely to exhibit ionised outflows (as traced by the [O iii] emission line) if the projected linear extent of the radio emission is confined within the spectroscopic aperture. Follow-up high resolution radio observations and integral field spectroscopy of 10 luminous Type 2 AGN reveal moderate power, young (or frustrated) jets interacting with the interstellar medium. We find that these sources live in highly star forming and gas rich galaxies. Additionally, by combining ALMA-derived dust maps with integral field spectroscopy for eight host galaxies of z ≈ 2 X-ray AGN, we show that Hα emission is an unreliable tracer of star formation. For the five targets with ionised outflows we find no dramatic in-situ shut down of the star formation. Across both of these studies we find that if these AGN do have a negative impact upon their host galaxies, it must be happening on small (unresolved) spatial scales and/or an observable galaxy-wide impact has yet to occur.

Recent discoveries of high-redshift galaxies have revealed the diversity of their physical properties, from normal star-forming galaxies to starburst galaxies. To understand the properties of these observed galaxies, it is crucial to understand the star formation (SF) history, and the radiation properties associated with the SF activity. Here we present the results of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with zoom-in initial conditions, and show the formation of the first galaxies and their evolution towards observable galaxies at z = 6. In addition, we show their multi-wavelength radiative properties. We find that star formation occurs intermittently due to supernova (SN) feedback at z > 10, and their radiation properties rapidly change with time. We suggest that the first galaxies are bright at UV wavelengths just after the starburst phase, and become extended Lyman-alpha sources. We also show that massive galaxies cause dusty starburst and become bright at infrared wavelengths.

Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) on their host galaxies, in the form of gas outflows capable of quenching star formation, is considered a major player in galaxy evolution. However, clear observational evidence of such major impact is still missing; uncertainties in measuring outflow properties might be partly responsible because of their critical role in comparisons with models and in constraining the impact of outflows on galaxies. Here we briefly review the challenges in measuring outflow physical properties and present an overview of outflow studies from high to low redshift. Finally, we present highlights from our MAGNUM survey of nearby AGN with VLT/MUSE, where the high intrinsic spatial resolution (down to ˜ 10 pc) allows us to accurately measure the physical and kinematic properties of ionised gas outflows.

We discuss the serendipitous discovery of a dusty high-redshift galaxy in a small (8 arcmin2) ALMA 3-mm survey Williams et al. (2019). The galaxy was previously unknown and is absent from existing multi-wavelength catalogs (“ALMA-only”). Using the ALMA position as prior, we perform forced deblended photometry to constrain its spectral energy distribution. The spectral energy distribution is well described by a massive (M* = 1010.8 M⊙) and highly obscured (AV ∼ 4) galaxy at redshift z = 5.5 ± 1.1 with star formation rate ∼ 300 M⊙yr−1. Our small survey area implies an uncertain but large contribution to the cosmic star formation rate density, similar to the contribution from all ultraviolet-selected galaxies combined at this redshift. This galaxy likely traces an abundant population of massive galaxies absent from current samples of infrared-selected or sub-millimeter galaxies, but with larger space densities, higher duty cycles, and significant contribution to the cosmic star-formation rate and stellar mass densities.

Using the FirstLight database of 300 zoom-in cosmological simulations we provide rest-frame UV-optical spectral energy distributions of galaxies with complex star-formation histories that are coupled to the non-uniform gas accretion history of galactic halos during cosmic dawn. The population at any redshift is very diverse ranging from starbursts to quiescent galaxies even at a fixed stellar mass. The FirstLight simulations make predictions on the rest-frame UV-optical absolute magnitudes, colors and optical emission lines of galaxies at z = 6–12 that will be observed for the first time with JWST and the next generation of telescopes in the coming decade.

The US astronomy/astrophysics community comes together to create a decadal report that summarizes grant funding priorities, observatory & instrumental priorities as well as community accomplishments and community goals such as increasing the number of women and the number of people from underrepresented groups. In the 2010 US National Academies Decadal Survey of Astronomy (NRC10), it was suggested that having to move so frequently which is a career necessity may be unattractive to people wanting to start a family, especially impacting women. Whether in Europe or elsewhere, as postdocs, astrophysicists will relocate every two to three years, until they secure a permanent position or leave research altogether. Astrophysicists do perceive working abroad as important and positive for their careers (Parenti02); however, it was found that the men at equal rank had not had to spend as much time abroad to further their careers (Fohl12). By implication, women need to work abroad longer or have more positions abroad to achieve the same rank as men. Astrophysicists living in the United Kingdom prefer to work in their country of origin, but many did not do so because of worse working conditions or difficultly finding a job for their spouse (Fohl14). In sum, mobility and moving is necessary for a career in astrophysics, and even more necessary for women, but astrophysicists prefer not to move as frequently as needed to maintain a research career. To gather more data on these issues and to broaden the discourse beyond male/female to include the gender diverse as well as to include other forms of diversity, the ASTROMOVES project was created which is funded through a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship. Though slowed down by COVID-19, several interviews have been conducted and some preliminary results will be presented.

Experimental data showing superhydrogenation of neutral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) coronene, pentacene and pentacenequinone is presented. PAH monolayers were prepared on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface and subsequently exposed to a beam of atomic hydrogen. The superhydrogenated PAH species were examined via temperature programmed desorption measurements. Stable intermediate superhydrogenation degrees as well as fully superhydrogenated species are observed and the initial reaction cross section for coronene has been determined.
