Several scenarios have been proposed to describe the physical connection between galaxies and their central active galactic nuclei (AGN). This connection could act on a range of spatial scales and vary across cosmic time. In these proceedings, we consider black hole and galaxy growth and whether that growth is affected by AGN feedback both based on statistical approaches – which reveal general population trends – and based on an individual case study – which gives us a more detailed insight on the physical processes at play. For the statistical approach, we showcase a low-redshift (0.04 < z < 0.2) SDSS sample with AGN classification based on a combination of emission-line diagnostic diagrams, and for which we account for sample selection by using a V/Vmax approach. The trends on the star formation rate - stellar mass (SFR – M*) plane suggest that the most likely connection is a common gas reservoir for star formation and AGN, and that they both decline as the gas reservoir is consumed. The trends established at low-redshift could act as a local benchmark against which to compare higher redshift studies. As a complementary approach, we use a detailed case study of a nearby AGN host with integral field spectroscopy from the VLT/MUSE instrument in order to spatially resolve the interplay between AGN feedback and the host galaxy. We find that the galaxy substructure likely plays a role by collimating and/or obscuring the outflows and radiation from the central engine. Ongoing and future work with 3D spectroscopy will enable us to learn more about galaxy and black hole coevolution. Lastly, we briefly discuss lessons learnt from both approaches.

The distribution of hot Jupiters, for which star-planet interactions can be significant, questions the evolution of exosystems. We aim to follow the orbital evolution of a planet along the rotational and structural evolution of the host star by taking into account the coupled effects of tidal and magnetic torques from ab initio prescriptions. It allows us to better understand the evolution of star-planet systems and to explain some properties of the distribution of observed close-in planets. To this end we use a numerical model of a coplanar circular star-planet system taking into account stellar structural changes, wind braking and star-planet interactions, called ESPEM (Benbakoura et al. (2019)). We find that depending on the initial configuration of the system, magnetic effects can dominate tidal effects during the various phases of the evolution, leading to an important migration of the planet and to significant changes on the rotational evolution of the star. Both kinds of interactions thus have to be taken into account to predict the evolution of compact star-planet systems.

We present ALMA detection of the [O iii] 88 μm line and 850 μm dust continuum emission in a Y-dropout Lyman break galaxy, MACS0416_Y1. The [O iii] detection confirms the object with a spectroscopic redshift to be z = 8.3118±0.0003. The 850 μm continuum intensity (0.14 mJy) implies a large dust mass on the order of 4×106M⊙. The ultraviolet-to-far infrared spectral energy distribution modeling, where the [O iii] emissivity model is incorporated, suggests the presence of a young (τage ≍ 4 Myr), star-forming (SFR ≍ 60M⊙yr−1), and moderately metal-polluted (Z ≍ 0.2Z⊙) stellar component with a stellar mass of 3 × 108M⊙. An analytic dust mass evolution model with a single episode of star formation does not reproduce the metallicity and dust mass in ≍ 4 Myr, suggesting an underlying evolved stellar component as the origin of the dust mass.

Host galaxy morphology studies of jetted narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1) are scarce. Although it seems that they are mostly hosted by late-type galaxies the results remain inconclusive, mostly due to the small sample size. Increasing the number of studied sources is crucial to achieve statistically significant results and to establish a preferred host type for jetted NLS1s. To this end we observed the host galaxies of nine NLS1s in near-infrared using NOTCam at the Nordic Optical Telescope. Seven of these sources are jetted based on the 37 GHz observations at Metsähovi Radio Observatory, Finland. To determine the morphological types of the hosts we performed photometric decomposition of the near-infrared images using GALFIT. Here we present the results of the host galaxy modelling, discuss the importance of this study to our understanding of the nature of the diverse NLS1 population, as well as its significance and implications for active galactic nuclei research in general.

The Wootton Center for Astrophysical Plasma Properties (WCAPP) is a new center focusing on the spectroscopic properties of stars and accretion disks using “at-parameter” experiments. Currently, these experiments use the X-ray output of the Z machine at Sandia National Laboratories — the largest X-ray source in the world — to heat plasmas to the same conditions (temperature, density, and radiation environment) as those observed in astronomical objects. The experiments include measuring (1) density-dependent opacities of iron-peak elements at solar interior conditions, (2) spectral lines of low-Z elements at white dwarf photospheric conditions, (3) atomic population kinetics of neon in a radiation-dominated environment, and (4) resonant Auger destruction (RAD) of silicon at conditions found in accretion disks around supermassive black holes. In particular, we report on recent results of our experiments involving helium at white dwarf photospheric conditions. We present results showing disagreement between inferred electron densities using the Hβ line and the He I 5876 Å line, most likely indicating incompleteness in our modeling of this helium line.

The origin of the mysterious multiphase filamentary structures surrounding Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) remains unknown. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observations for a sample of 15 BCGs to investigate the origin and life-cycle of the gas. Those observations show clumpy and massive molecular filaments, preferentially located around the radio bubbles inflated by the active galactic nuclei (AGN). We investigate where the cold gas condenses from the intra-cluster medium, by comparing the radial extent of the filaments with predictions from numerical simulations.

In Kawahara et al. (2018) and Masuda et al. (2019), we reported the discovery of four self-lensing binaries consisting of F/G-type stars and (most likely) white dwarfs whose masses range from 0.2 to 0.6 solar masses. Here we present their updated system parameters based on new radial velocity data from the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory, and the Gaia parallaxes and spectroscopic parameters of the primary stars. We also briefly discuss the astrophysical implications of these findings.

When we talk about Astronomy, we normally do not take into account that we are using a cultural specific way of understanding the sky. Astronomers, either professional, amateur or just lovers of the sky nowadays tend to approach the sky from the point of view of modern science. There, we approach the sky as something that needs to be explored, understood and explained.

However, this vision was not always like that, or even in other cultures is/was completely different. For centuries, the human being has comprehended the sky, its changes and constancies, as part of their world, as part of the environment, as part of their everyday life.

In this paper, I review a few of these different ways of approaching the sky in several cultures, from the Near East to Rome or the Andes and how we can use them today for education, outreach and heritage management.

We present high-precision light curves of several M- and K-type, active detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs), recorded with 2-minute cadence by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). Analysis of these curves, combined with new and literature radial velocity (RV) data, allows to vastly improve the accuracy and precision of stellar parameters with respect to previous studies of these systems. Results for one previously unpublished DEB are also presented.

Galaxies and nuclei in dense environment at high redshift provide a good laboratory to investigate accelerated, most extreme evolution of galaxies. The SSA22 proto-cluster at z = 3.1 is known to have a three-dimensional 50 (comoving) Mpc-scale filamentary structure, traced by Lyα emitters, which makes the field a suitable target in this regard. To identify dust-obscured star-formation, a contiguous 20 arcmin2 region at the node of the cosmic structure was observed in ALMA band 6. In total 57 ALMA sources have been identified above 5σ, which makes the field one of the richest field in ALMA-identified (sub)millimeter galaxies. The follow-up spectroscopy confirmed about 20 sources as exact proto-cluster members so far. Together with high X-ray AGN fraction, our results suggest that the vigorous star formation activity and the growth of super massive black holes occurred simultaneously in the densest regions at z ∼ 3.

Syntheses of carbon dust analogues are key experiments in laboratory astrophysics, as an approach to study some chemical and topological features of interplanetary and interstellar carbon dust. We report a comparative experimental study for carbon dust analogues obtained in (1) an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), fed with helium – saturated hydrocarbons gas mixtures, (2) a low pressure radio frequency (RF) discharge and (3) a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) experiment with a Nd:YAG laser and a graphite target. The aliphatic –C–H stretching band, known as the 3.4 micron feature, as well as the CH2/CH3 ratio, the H/C ratio value and the physical appearance at microscopic scale, show a variability that is influenced by the synthesis method and the experimental parameters of each specific technique.

White dwarfs are useful objects with which to study the local interstellar medium (ISM). High ionisation state absorption features that cannot be attributed to the photosphere or the ISM have been observed along the line-of-sight to a number of white dwarf stars. Suggested origins of these lines include ionisation from past supernovae, stellar winds, circumstellar disks, photoionisation from nearby hot stars or also from the white dwarf itself. In this study we consider the origin of these non-photospheric highly ionised lines in two stars towards a rarefied region of the galaxy known as the extended β CMa Tunnel. We present preliminary results from our analysis of the first of these two stars.

Multi-phase filamentary structures surrounding giant elliptical galaxies at the center of cool-core clusters, the Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), have been detected from optical to submillimeter wavelengths. The source of the ionisation in the filaments is still debated. Studying the excitation of these structures is key to our understanding of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback in general, and more precisely of the impact of environmental and local effects on star formation. One possible contributor to the excitation of the filaments is the thermal radiation from the cooling of the hot plasma surrounding the BCGs, the so-called cooling flow.

We analyze the molecular and atomic gas data from the GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (xGASS) and the extended CO Legacy Database (xCOLD GASS) IRAM survey using novel survival analysis techniques to identify a small number of stellar properties that best correlate with the gas mass. We find that the dust absorption, AV, and the stellar half-light radius, R50, are likely the two best secondary parameters than improve the Kennicutt - Schmidt type relation between the gas mass and the star formation rate, SFR. We fit multiple regression, taking into account gas mass upper limits, to summarize the median, mean, and the 0.15/0.85 quantile multivariate relationships between the gas mass (atomic or molecular hydrogen), SFR, AV and/or R50. In particular, we find that the AV of both the stellar continuum and nebular gas emission shows a significant partial correlation with the molecular hydrogen after controlling for the effect of SFR. The partial correlation between the AV and the atomic gas, however, is weak and their zero-order correlation may be explained by SFR. This is expected since in poorly dust-shielded regions molecular hydrogen is dissociated by the far ultraviolet photons and HI is the dominant phase. Similarly, R50 shows significant partial correlations with both atomic and molecular gas masses. This hints at the importance of environment (e.g., galacto-centric distance) on the gas contents galaxies and on the interplay between gas and star formation rate. We apply the gas scaling relations we found to a large sample of type 2 and type 1 AGNs and infer that the gas mass correlates with AGN luminosity. This correlation is inconsistent with the prediction of AGN feedback models that strong AGNs remove or heat cold gas in their host galaxies.

Astronomical observations have been documented in pre-Hispanic cultures. However, little is known about the astronomical heritage of pre-Hispanic societies in Venezuela, since there are no evidence of an ancestral material culture as other regions of Meso and South America, and these native Venezuelan groups lacked a written, alphabetic or ideographic language. There are innumerable petroglyph deposits in almost all regions of Venezuela, especially near Lake Valencia (Carabobo state) and those of the Andean foothills (Barinas state). By means of computerized simulation and archaeoastronomy techniques, the occurrence of a total solar eclipse is verified: in July 1, 577 at the Vigirima site; and another total solar eclipse at noon on May 16, 1398 at the Bum Bum site. It is concluded that the contemplation of the total eclipses of the Sun, must lead to the need for communication and recording, and lacking any type of writing, they drew the phenomenon, using the techniques and means at their disposal: engraving on rocks.

In order to clarify the dust production in the early Universe, we constrain the dust mass in high-redshift (z ≳ 5) galaxies using the upper limits obtained by ALMA. We perform fitting to the rest-frame UV–far-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of a giant Lyα emitter, Himiko, at z = 6.6 and a composite SED of z > 5 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). For Himiko, we obtain a high dust temperature > 70 K. This high dust temperature puts a strong upper limit on the total dust mass Md ≲ 2 × 106 M⊙, and the dust mass produced per supernova (SN) md,SN ≲ 0.1 M⊙. Such a low md,SN suggests significant loss of dust by reverse shock destruction or outflow. For the LBG sample, we only obtain an upper limit for md,SN as ∼2 M⊙. This clarifies the importance of observing UV-bright objects (like Himiko) to constrain the dust production by SNe.

Dynamical mechanisms are essential to exchange angular momentum in galaxies, drive the gas to the center, and fuel the central super-massive black holes. While at 100pc scale, the gas is sometimes stalled in nuclear rings, recent observations reaching ∼10pc scale have revealed, within the sphere of influence of the black hole, smoking gun evidence of fueling. Observations of AGN feedback are described, together with the suspected responsible mechanisms. Molecular outflows are frequently detected in active galaxies with ALMA and NOEMA, with loading factors between 1 and 5. When driven by AGN with escape velocity, these outflows are therefore a clear way to moderate or suppress star formation. Molecular disks, or tori, are detected at 10pc-scale, kinematically decoupled from their host disk, with random orientation. They can be used to measure the black hole mass.

In this IAU symposium, we present results of our recent paper, Hashimoto et al. (2018a) focusing on its spectral energy distribution modeling. We present spectroscopic observations of MACS1149-JD1, a gravitationally lensed galaxy originally discovered by Zheng et al. (2012) via the dropout technique. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we detect an emission line of doubly ionized oxygen, [Oiii] 88 μm, at a redshift of 9.1096±0.0006. This precisely determined redshift indicates that the red rest-frame optical colour observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope arises from a dominant stellar component that formed about 250 million years after the Big Bang, corresponding to a redshift of about 15. MACS1149-JD1 clearly demonstrates the importance and power of spectral energy distribution modeling to understand the earliest star formation history of the Universe.

Galaxy groups offer an important perspective on how the large-scale structure of the Universe has formed and evolved, being great laboratories to study the impact of the environment on the evolution of galaxies. We aim to investigate the properties of a galaxy group that is gravitationally lensing HELMS18, a submillimeter galaxy at z = 2.39. We obtained multi-object spectroscopy data using Gemini-GMOS to investigate the stellar kinematics of the central galaxies, determine its members and obtain the mass, radius and the numerical density profile of this group. Our final goal is to build a complete description of this galaxy group. In this work we present an analysis of its two central galaxies: one is an active galaxy with z = 0.59852 ± 0.00007, while the other is a passive galaxy with z = 0.6027 ± 0.0002. Furthermore, the difference between the redshifts obtained using emission and absorption lines indicates an outflow of gas with velocity v = 278.0 ± 34.3 km/s relative to the galaxy.

We present photo-ionization and morpho-kinematic analyses of the ejecta of novae. The sample consists of ten novae belonging to the Fe II, He/N and hybrid classes. The Fe II class of novae in the sample have bipolar cone-like structures, with or without equatorial rings with inclination angle in the range of 40°–60°. The He/N novae have bullet-nose curve along with bipolar cone-like structures and equatorial rings with an inclination angle of ~80°. The hybrid nova in the sample is a bipolar frustum of prolate spheroid along with bipolar cone-like structures and equatorial rings with an inclination angle of 63°.
