Many intermediate polars are hard X-ray sources. The theory of their hard X-ray radiation is well developed and allows us to determine white dwarf masse in this kind of cataclysmic variables. Here we present the results of determination the masses of 35 white dwarfs in the intermediate polars observed by observatories NuSTAR (10 sources) and Swift/BAT (25 sources). The corresponding mass accrerion rates and the luminosity function were also derived due to accurate distance to the sources well known now after Gaia DR2.

AGN by definition live in galaxies. Despite a long history of studies, there is still much ongoing research into the interplay of the nucleus and the host galaxy, how do they affect each other, how is their evolution intertwined. This review will briefly go over the historical developments behind the current understanding of AGN host galaxies, their types and characteristics. It will discuss the starburst and AGN connection in particular, and how these phenomena may be connected or influence each other by means of e.g. gas flows. Finally, some examples of AGN/starburst evolution studies from SALT and other large telescopes will be presented.

The Intergalactic Medium (IGM) is the region comprising the environment between the galaxies. Gamma-ray observations have provided lower limits to IGM magnetic fields of the order of ≳10–16 G. Magnetic fields are continuously ejected from galaxies by jets and galactic winds. However, the origin and evolution of cosmic magnetic fields in the more diffuse regions, like voids, is still debated. The difficulties in directly measuring magnetic fields and their coherent scales, make hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) cosmological simulations useful tools to shed light on this debate. As a first approach, we have performed hydrodynamic cosmological simulations assuming energy equipartition as an initial condition between the baryonic gas and the magnetic field, starting at z = 8, to track the evolution of magnetic fields, and compare with results of MHD simulations. We have found that for halos and cores, our results are comparable to the MHD description. For the less dense regions, the equipartition condition clearly overestimates the observed limits. In forthcoming work, we will investigate MHD simulations of cosmological evolution and amplification of seed magnetic fields, considering all relevant feedback processes and exploring turbulent dynamo amplification versus primordial mechanisms across cosmological timescales.

We leverage new ultra-deep, high resolution, multi-frequency radio imaging at 6 and 3 GHz with the unique datasets available in the GOODS-S/HUDF region in order to assess the AGN fraction in a faint radio-selected sample. For AGN identification, we adopt a multi-wavelength approach, combining X-ray and (mid-)infrared (IR) selections with radio identification such as X-ray to radio excess, flat radio spectral slopes, and the radio-IR correlation. We identify AGN in 43% of our radio sample, yielding an AGN source density of ∼ 1 arcmin−2. This AGN fraction is likely underestimated, as 1) our shallower 3 GHz data is biased against flat radio spectrum sources and 2) all of our selections may be biased against the most heavily obscured AGN. The James Webb Space Telescope’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) will address the latter issue and we briefly outline our Cycle 1 Guaranteed Time Observation (GTO) program to search for heavily obscured AGN.

The growth of spectroscopic observations of exoplanetary systems allows the possibility of testing theoretical models and studying the interaction that exoplanetary atmospheres have with the wind and the energetic photons from the star. In this work, we present a set of numerical 3D simulations of HD 209458b for which spectral lines observations of their evaporative atmosphere are available. The different simulations aim to reproduce different scenarios for the star-planet interaction. With our models, we reconstruct the Lyα line during transit and compare with observations. The results allows us to analyse the shape of the line profile under these different scenarios and the comparison with the observations suggest that HD209458b may have a magnetic field off less than 1 G. We also explore the behaviour of the magnesium lines for models with and without magnetic fields.

I will present evidence of QSO-driven outflows in the early Universe, resulting from the stacking analysis of ALMA observations of the [CII] emission line for a sample of 50 QSOs at z ∼ 5 – 7. The high sensitivity reached by our analysis allowed us to assess that very broad wings are on average present in the [CII] profile, and extend beyond velocities of 1000 km/s in systems with low and high SFR. Such wings are therefore tracing QSO-driven [CII] outflows, with associated mass outflow rates of 100 – 200Mȯ / yr. I will discuss how these outflows relate to those observed in lower-z AGNs and give an estimate of their spatial extent. Furthermore, I will focus on the high-resolution ALMA observation of a hyper luminous QSO at z ∼ 4.5, revealing an exceptional overdensity with multiple companions as close as 2 kpc. These crowded surroundings, and the QSO host galaxy itself, are forming stars at a very high rate (hundreds of Mȯ / yr), suggesting that a significant fraction of the stellar mass assembly at early epochs might have taken place in the companions. I will discuss how the BH and host-galaxy masses are growing in this multi- source system, which likely represents the cradle of what would be a giant galaxy at z = 0.

Open Astronomy is an important and valuable goal, including the availability of refereed science papers and user-friendly public astronomy data archives. The latter allow and encourage interested researchers from around the world to visualise, analyse and possibly download data from many different science and frequency domains. With the enormous growth of data volumes and complexity, open archives are essential to explore ideas and make discoveries. Open source software is equally important for many reasons, including reproducibility and collaboration. I will present examples of open archive and software tools, including the CSIRO ASKAP Science Data Archive (CASDA), the Local Volume HI Survey (LVHIS), the 3D Source Finding Application (SoFiA) and the Busy Function (BF). Astronomy is international and includes or links to an incredibly wide range of sciences, computing, engineering, and education. Its open nature can serve as an example for world-wide interdisciplinary collaborations.

The emergence of life on Earth may have its origin in organic molecules formed in the interstellar medium. Molecules with amide and isocyanate groups resemble structures found in peptides and nucleobases and are necessary for their formation. Their formation is expected to take place in the solid state, on icy dust grains, and is studied here by far-UV irradiating a CH4:HNCO mixture at 20 K in the laboratory. Reaction products are detected by means of infrared spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption - mass spectrometry. Various simple amides and isocyanates are formed, showing the importance of ice chemistry for their interstellar formation. Constrained by experimental conditions, a reaction network is derived, showing possible formation pathways of these species under interstellar conditions.

We present some results from the DRAGON simulations, a set of four direct N-body simulations of globular clusters (GCs) with a million stars and five percent initial (primordial) binaries. These simulations were undertaken with the NBODY6++GPU code, which allowed us to follow dynamical and stellar evolution of individual stars and binaries, formation and evolution of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, and the effect of a galactic tidal field. The simulations are the largest existing models of a realistic globular cluster over its full lifetime of 12 billion years. In particular we will show here an investigation of the population of binaries including compact objects (such as white dwarfs - cataclysmic variables and merging black hole binaries in the model as counterparts of LIGO/Virgo sources); their distribution in the cluster and evolution with time.

We present first results from our study of the host galaxies and environments of quasars in Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA), a multiwavelength photometric and spectroscopic survey for ∼300,000 galaxies over ∼300 deg2, to a limiting magnitude of r ∼ 20 mag. We use a GAIA-selected sample of ∼350 quasars at z < 0.3 in GAMA. For all the quasars, we determine all surrounding GAMA galaxies and measure their star formation (SF) rate and SF history, and the host galaxy morphology and group membership of the quasars. As a comparison sample of inactive galaxies, we use 1000 subsets of galaxies in GAMA, matched in redshift and galaxy stellar mass to the quasars. We find that quasar activity does not depend on the large-scale environment (cluster/group/void), although quasars tend to prefer satellite location in their environment. Compared to inactive galaxies, quasars are preferentially hosted in bulge-dominated galaxies and have higher SF rates, both overall and averaged over the last 10 and 100 Myr. Quasars also have shorter median SF timescales, shorter median time since the last SF burst, and higher metallicity than inactive galaxies. We discuss these results in terms of triggering mechanisms of the quasar activity and the role of quasars in galaxy evolution.

We present results of the propagation of high-energy cosmic rays (CRs) and their secondaries in the intracluster medium (ICM). To this end, we employ three-dimensional cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulations of the turbulent intergalactic medium to explore the propagation of CRs with energies between 1014 and 1019 eV. We study the interaction of test particles with this environment considering all relevant electromagnetic, photohadronic, photonuclear, and hadronuclear processes. Finally, we discuss the consequences of the confinement of high-energy CRs in clusters for the production of gamma rays and neutrinos.

At high redshift, the contribution of strong emission lines to the broadband photometry can cause large uncertainties when estimating galaxy physical properties. To examine this effect, we investigate a sample of 54 LBGs at 3 < zspec < 3.8 with detected [OIII] line emissions. We use CIGALE to fit simultaneously the rest-frame UV-to-NIR SEDs of these galaxies and their emission line data. By comparing the results with and without emission line data, we show that spectroscopic data are necessary to constrain the nebular model. We examine the K-band excess, which is usually used to estimate the emissions of [OIII]+Hβ lines when there is no spectral data, and find that the difference between the estimation and observation can reach up to > 1 dex for some galaxies, showing the importance of obtaining spectroscopic measurements of these lines. We also estimate the equivalent width of the Hβ absorption and find it negligible compared to the Hβ emission.

Accurate atomic data for line wavelengths, energy levels, line broadening such as hyperfine structure and isotope structure, and f-values, particularly for the line rich iron group elements, are needed for stellar astrophysics applications, and examples of recent measurements are given. These atomic data are essential for determination of elemental abundances in astronomical objects. With modern facilities, telescopes and spectrographs, access to underexplored regions (IR, UV, VUV), and improved stellar atmosphere models (3D, NLTE), and extremely large datasets, astronomers are tackling problems ranging from studying Galactic chemical evolution, to low mass stars and exoplanets. Such advances require improved accuracy and completeness of the atomic database for analyses of astrophysical spectra.

Motivated by the apparently conflicting results reported in the literature on the effect of environment on nuclear activity, we have carried out a new analysis by comparing the fraction of galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the most overdense regions (rich galaxy clusters) and the most underdense ones (voids) in the local universe. Exploiting the classical BPT diagnostics, we have extracted volume limited samples of star forming and AGN galaxies. We find that, at variance with star-forming galaxies, AGN galaxies have similar distributions of specific star formation rates and of galactic ages (as indicated by the Dn4000 parameter) both in clusters and in voids. In both environments galaxies hosting AGNs are generally old, with low star formation activity. The AGN fraction increases faster with stellar mass in clusters than in voids, especially above 1010.2 M⊙. Our results indicate that, in the local universe, the nuclear activity correlates with stellar mass and galaxy morphology and is weakly, if at all, affected by the local galaxy density.

Masses have been computed for the white dwarfs (WDs) in eclipsing, mass exchange (symbiotic), WD–red giant (RG) binaries by using single-lined spectroscopic orbits, orbital inclinations, and the RG masses. Inclinations have been measured for 13 eclipsing symbiotic binaries. Using Gaia data the mass of the RG can be found from evolutionary tracks. Since the WD evolved from the more massive star in the binary, the WD should be more massive than predicted from the mass of the current RG. Typically the WD has a lower mass than expected implying a previous mass exchange stage for these systems.

Solar simulations and observations showed that the detection of Earth twins around Sun-like stars is difficult in radial velocities with current methods techniques. The Sun has proved to be very useful to test processes, models, and analysis methods. The convective blueshift effect, dominating for the Sun, decreases towards lower mass stars, providing more suitable conditions to detect low mass planets. We describe the basic processes at work and how we extended a realistic solar model of radial velocity, photometry, astrometry and LogR′HK variability, using a coherent grid of stellar parameters covering a large range in mass and average activity levels. We present selected results concerning the impact of magnetic activity on Earth-mass planet detectability as a function of stellar type. We show how such realistic simulations can help characterizing the effect of stellar activity on RV and astrometric exoplanet detection.

We investigate rest-frame UV to far-infrared emission lines and SEDs from 1124 galaxies at z = 4.9 – 7.0. Our sample is composed of 1092 Lyα emitters (LAEs) at z = 4.9–7.0 identified by Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) narrowband surveys and 34 galaxies at z = 5.148–7.508 with deep [Cii]158μm ALMA data. The SEDs clearly show flux excesses in the Spitzer/IRAC 3.6 and 4.5μm bands, suggesting strong rest-frame optical emission lines of [Oiii] and/or Hα. We model the galaxy SEDs with a flexible code combining stellar population and photoionization models (BEAGLE; Chevallard & Charlot 2016), and investigate relations between the emission lines of Lyα, [Oiii], Hα, and [CII]. We find 1) a positive correlation between the rest-frame Hα equivalent width (EW) and the Lyα, EW, ${\EW {^0_Ly\alpha}} $, 2) an interesting turn-over trend that the [Oiii]/Hα flux ratio increases in ${\EW {^0_Ly\alpha}} $ ≃ 0–30 Å, and then decreases out to ${\EW {^0_Ly\alpha}} $ ≃ 130 Å, and 3) a > 99% anti-correlation between a [Cii] luminosity to star-formation rate ratio L[Cii]/SFR) and ${\EW {^0_Ly\alpha}} $. Modeling with BEAGLE also suggests that a simple anticorrelation between ${\EW {^0_Ly\alpha}} $ and metallicity explains self-consistently all of the relations of Lyα, Hα, [Oiii]/Hα, and [Cii] in our study, indicative of detections of very metal-poor (∼0.03Z⊙) galaxies with ${\EW {^0_Ly\alpha}} $ ∼200 Å.

In the past, Western academic astronomy has conceived in a very specific way its interests. However, in recent decades there has been a promising openness to the rest of the society, in the context of areas such as education, heritage and outreach. Despite this, there has not been an adequate scientific approach to do it, which would imply taking into account the social sciences and a truly interdisciplinary perspective. Here we want to develop the idea that this interdisciplinary approach already exists and it is called: Cultural Astronomy. Unfortunately, in the context of academic astronomy it has been only seen as a study of the “astronomies of others”, intended as previous stages or failed attempts of Western academic astronomy. We will seek to show that Cultural Astronomy, as a critical reflection on the social character of the astronomical knowledge, is key to the success of these opening efforts.

We present ALMA [CII] line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum observations of seven z > 6 low-luminosity quasars (M1450 > −25 mag) discovered by our on-going Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam survey. The [CII] line was detected in all targets with luminosities of ∼(2−10) × 108 L⊙, about one order of magnitude smaller than optically luminous quasars. Also found was a wide scatter of FIR continuum luminosity, ranging from LFIR < 1011L⊙ to ∼2 × 1012L⊙. With the [CII]-based dynamical mass, we suggest that a significant fraction of low-luminosity quasars are located on or even below the local Magorrian relation, particularly at the massive end of the galaxy mass distribution. This is a clear contrast to the previous finding that luminous quasars tend to have overmassive black holes relative to the relation. Our result is expected to show a less-biased nature of the early co-evolution of black holes and their host galaxies.

Much of the evolution of galaxies takes place in groups where feedback has the greatest impact on galaxy formation and evolution. We summarize results from studies of the central brightest group early-type galaxies (BGEs) of an optically selected, statistically complete sample of 53 nearby groups (<80 Mpc; CLoGS sample), observed in radio 235/610 MHz (GMRT), CO (IRAM/APEX) and X-ray (Chandra and XMM-Newton) frequencies. We characterize the radio-AGN population of the BGEs, their group X-ray environment and examine the jet energetics impact on the intra-group gas. We discuss the relation between the radio properties of the BGEs and their group X-ray environment along with the relation between the molecular gas content and the star formation that BGEs present. We conclude that AGN feedback in groups can appear as relatively gentle near-continuous thermal regulation, but also as extreme AGN activity which could potentially shut down cooling for longer periods.
