In this short review, I summarize some of the salient features of the emerging theory of exoplanets in general, and of giant exoplanets in particular. A focus is on the characterization of transiting planets at primary and secondary eclipse, but various other related topics are covered, if only briefly. A theme that clearly emerges is that a vibrant new science of comparative exoplanetology is being born.

We examine the abundance gradient in the Milky Way disk via homogeneously determined data for 124 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe). We present recent results from a detailed regression analysis of the O gradient. With O, Ne, S, Cl, and Ar available and a range of galactocentric distance (Rg) from 0.9 to 21 kpc, we present additional exploration of the disk radial gradient by statistically analyzing a series of short segments of increasing average Rg.

In close eclipsing binaries, measurements of the variations in the binary's eclipse timing may be used to infer information about the existence of planets in P-Type motion. To study the possibility of detecting such planets with CoRoT and Kepler, we calculated eclipse timing variations (ETV) for different values of the mass and orbital elements of the perturbing planet. These investigations are a continuation of the work of Schwarz et al. (2011).

We present narrow-band optical and near-IR images, and high-resolution long-slit spectra of the planetary nebula Hu 1-2 that allow us to make a detailed description of its unusual morphology and internal kinematics. The data also reveal that the ansae of Hu 1-2 probably represent bow-shocks associated to high velocity outflows that are irradiated from the central star.

Up to now, more than 500 extra-solar planets have been discovered. Many of these extrasolar systems consist of one star and only one giant planet. However, recently more and more different types of systems have become known, including also extrasolar planets in binaries. In our study, we will concentrate on such systems, since a large percentage of all G-M stars are expected to be part of binary or multiple stellar systems. Therefore, these kinds of systems are worthy of investigation in detail. In particular, we will concentrate on planets in P-Type motion, where the planet orbits around both stars. During the last few years, four such systems (NN Ser, HW Vir, HU Aqr and DP Leo) have been discovered. In our study, we performed dynamical studies for three multi-planetary systems in binaries (NN Ser, HW Vir, HU Aqr), and compared simulated eclipse timing variations (ETV) to current observational data.

Since the issue of the unifying Strasbourg-ESO Catalogue of Galactic Planetary Nebulae (SECGPN) a large number of new discoveries have been made thanks to improved surveys and discovery techniques. The increasingly heterogeneous published population of Galactic PNe, that we have determined totals <2850 PNe, is becoming more difficult to study on the whole without a centralised repository. We introduce a consolidated and interactive online database with object classifications that reflect the latest multi-wavelength data and the most recent results. The extensible database, hosted by the Centre de Donnees astronomique de Strasbourg (CDS), will contain a wealth of observed data for large, well-defined samples of PNe including coordinates, multi-wavelength images, spectroscopy, line intensities, radial velocities and central star information. It is anticipated that the database will be publicly released early 2012.

The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) have being simulated for 1120 systems that contain brown dwarfs with different physical parameters and protoplanetary disks that are inclined at different angles. The SED's shape dependence on disk inclination toward the observer is discussed.

The multi-epoch YJKs sub-arcsecond photometry of the VMC survey provides a long anticipated deep near-infrared (NIR) window into further understanding the stellar populations of the Magellanic Clouds. The first year of observations consisted of six tiles covering ~9% of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) survey region and contains 102 objects previously classified as planetary nebulae (PNe). A large proportion of the sample were found to be contaminated by non-PNe. These initial results underline the importance of establishing a clean catalogue of LMC PNe before they are applied in areas such as the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) and searches for binary central stars. As the VMC survey progresses it will play a fundamental role in cleaning extant PN catalogues and a complementary role in the discovery of new PNe.

We present the results of a study of the planetary nebula NGC 40 with the use of the 3-D photoionization code Mocassin constrained by observational data of different types. The modeling process allows us to derive the three-dimensional nebular structure, physical and chemical characteristics and ionizing star parameters of the object by simultaneously fitting the integrated line intensities, the temperature map, density map, and the observed morphologies in different emission lines. For this particular case we combined hydrodynamical simulations with the photoionization scheme in order to obtain a self-consistent distribution of density and velocity of the nebular material. Finally, using theoretical evolutionary tracks of intermediate and low mass stars, we estimate the mass and age of the central star of NGC 40 as being 0.57 M⊙ and 5810 yr, respectively. The distance obtained from the fitting procedure was 1150 ± 170 pc.

The stability of planetary motion in the binary system α Cen A–B is studied. Lyapunov spectra of the motion of the system with a single massive planet are computed on a fine grid of the initial data, and, by means of statistical analysis of the obtained data arrays, chaotic domains are identified in the “pericentric distance — eccentricity” initial data space for the planetary orbit. Association with the initial data domains for the orbits exhibiting close encounters with central stars and for the orbits exhibiting long-term escape is investigated.

We present optical integral field spectroscopy analysis of the main components, with the exception of the halo, as well as of the detected small-scale structures of the planetary nebulae NGC 3242. The observations were obtained with the VIMOS instrument attached to VLT-UT3. Spatially resolved maps of the electronic density (Ne), temperatures (Te) and chemical abundances, i.e., in a pixel to pixel fashion of the small and large-scales structures of this planetary nebula are determined in this work. These diagnostic and abundance maps represent important constraints for future detailed three dimensional photoionization modeling of the nebula, as well as providing important information on biases introduced by traditional slit observations.

In order to trace the role of binarity for disk evolution and hence planet formation, we started the currently largest spatially resolved near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic study of the inner dust and accretion disks of the individual components of 27 visual, 100–400 AU binaries in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We study the frequency of Brackett-γ (2.165μm) emitters to assess the frequency of accretion disk-bearing stars among the binaries of the ONC: only 34±9% of the binary components show signs of accretion and, hence, the presence of gaseous inner disks—less than the fraction of gas accretion disks among single stars of the ONC of ~50%. Additionally, we find a significant difference between binaries above and below 200 AU separation: no close systems with only one accreting component are found. The results suggest shortened disk lifetimes as well as synchronized disk evolution.

We present preliminary results of the first near-infrared variability study of the Arches cluster, using adaptive optics data from NIRI/Gemini and NACO/VLT. The goal is to discover eclipsing binaries in this young (2.5 ± 0.5 Myr), dense, massive cluster for which we will determine accurate fundamental parameters with subsequent spectroscopy. Given that the Arches cluster contains more than 200 Wolf-Rayet and O-type stars, it provides a rare opportunity to determine parameters for some of the most massive stars in the Galaxy.

We are presently using the Chandra X-ray Observatory to conduct the first systematic X-ray survey of planetary nebulae (PNe) in the solar neighborhood. The Chandra Planetary Nebula Survey (ChanPlaNS) is a 570 ks Chandra Cycle 12 Large Program targeting 21 high-excitation PNe within ~1.5 kpc of Earth. When complete, this survey will provide a suite of new X-ray diagnostics that will inform the study of late stellar evolution, binary star astrophysics, and wind interactions. Among the early results of ChanPlaNS (when combined with archival Chandra data) is a surprisingly high detection rate of relatively hard X-ray emission from CSPNe. Specifically, X-ray point sources are clearly detected in roughly half of the ~30 high-excitation PNe observed thus far by Chandra, and all but one of these X-ray-emitting CSPNe display evidence for a hard (few MK) component in their Chandra spectra. Only the central star of the Dumbbell appears to display “pure” hot blackbody emission from a ~200 kK hot white dwarf photosphere in the X-ray band. Potential explanations for the“excess” hard X-ray emission detected from the other CSPNe include late-type companions (heretofore undetected, in most cases) whose coronae have been rejuvenated by recent interactions with the mass-losing WD progenitor, non-LTE effects in hot white dwarf photospheres, self-shocking variable winds from the central star, and slow (re-)accretion of previously ejected red giant envelope mass.

We construct a detailed model for the IR dust emission from the PN IC 418. We succeed to reproduce the emission from 2 to 200 μm. We can determine the amount of emitting dust as well as its composition, and compare to the depletion of elements determined for the photoionized region.

We discuss the origin and evolution of low mass contact binaries with Porb shorter than 0.3 d that have properties somewhat different from the rest of the contact binaries. A comparison of an evolutionary model set with observations shows that both components are on the main sequence, the age of the binaries is at least several Gyr, while the contact phase lasts only less than 1 Gyr.

We present physical and chemcal properties of the disk in the eclipsing binary system ∊ Aur by solving 2D radiative transfer problem. We also present preliminary results of our high resolution spectroscopic monitoring of K I, Na, and Hα line profiles variation during the totality phase of the recent eclipse of ∊ Aur.

The kinematic behaviour of 362 chromospherically active binary stars (CABs) in the solar neighbourhood were investigated. The Third CABs Catalog by Eker et al. (2008) was used as the main source. The spatial distribution and the components of the Galactic space velocities of the programme stars were determined. The effects of differential rotation and Local Standard of Rest (LSR) were corrected for all systems.

Forty probable moving group (MG) members were determined by Eggen's criteria. The kinematic age of the young systems, which are probable members of MGs, was calculated as 0.79 (0.21) Gyr and the rest of 322 field stars were found to have a kinematic age of 4.38 (1.1) Gyr. Field CABs were separated into two sub-groups: dwarf systems, which were formed by main sequence (dwarf) stars, and evolved systems included at least one evolved (giant or sub-giant) component. The kinematic age of 134 dwarf systems was calculated as 4.69 (0.75) Gyr and 4.15 (1.29) Gyr for 188 evolved CABs.
