Observing the supernovae (SNe) associated to the different types of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is one of the few means to study their progenitors. In the past years, it has become clear that GRB-like events are more heterogeneous than previously thought. There is a marked difference between long GRBs, which are produced by the collapse of very massive stars and are normally associated with broad-lined type Ic SNe, and short bursts, which occur when two compact objects merge and that, at least in some cases, can produce an associated kilonova. Moreover, the SNe associated with different sub-types of long GRBs are also seen to differ, especially those associated with ultra-long duration GRBs. To address this issue in a systematic way we started an observing programme in 2010 at the 10.4m GTC telescope. Here we present some results of our programme, including the detection of 12 new GRB-SNe. Highlights of our sample are the discovery of the first spectroscopic SN associated with a highly energetic (Eγ, iso ~ 1054 erg) “cosmological” burst (GRB 130427A), the study of the SN associated with a shock-breakout GRB (GRB 140606B) and the SN associated with the peculiar ultra-long GRB 101225A at z = 0.85. The sample includes also the follow-up of several short GRBs in search for kilonovae emission (GRB 130603B and GRB 160821B are important examples). Amongst our latest results we present the photometric and spectroscopic observations of the SNe associated with GRB 150818A and GRB 161219B.

Most pre-college teachers in the United States have not been trained in astronomy. In Texas, astronomical concepts enter the pre-college science curriculum at all levels.

During the last six years, I have presented two different types of workshops: intensive three-week summer institutes for rather small numbers of teachers, and shorter 6- to 18-hour workshops for larger groups.

The University of Texas Astronomy Department and McDonald Observatory have hosted five of the intensive institutes. The institutes were established to offer an opportunity to learn astronomy through hands-on activities (Texas education regulations mandate that 40 per cent of all pre-college science classes should be laboratory oriented), and to introduce the teachers to modern astronomical research and facilities.

Since the discovery of the first radio pulsar fifty years ago, the population of neutron stars in our Galaxy has grown to over 2,600. A handful of these sources, exclusively seen in X-rays, show properties that are not observed in normal pulsars. Despite their scarcity, they are key to understanding aspects of the neutron star phenomenology and evolution. The forthcoming all-sky survey of eROSITA will unveil the X-ray faint end of the neutron star population at unprecedented sensitivity; therefore, it has the unique potential to constrain evolutionary models and advance our understanding of the sources that are especially silent in the radio and γ-ray regimes. In this contribution I discuss the expected role of eROSITA, and the challenges it will face, at probing the galactic neutron star population.

A recent analysis of a few carbon-oxygen white dwarfs in old open clusters of the Milky Way (MW) identified a kink in the initial-final mass relation (IFMR), located over a range of initial masses, 1.65 ≲ Mi/M⊙ ≲ 2.10, which unexpectedly interrupts the commonly assumed monotonic trend. The proposed interpretation links this observational fact to the formation of carbon stars and the modest outflows (with mass loss rate < 10−7 M⊙/yr) that are expected as long as the carbon excess remains too low to produce dust grains in sufficient amount. Under these conditions the mass of the carbon-oxygen core can grow more than is generally predicted by stellar models. We discuss these new findings also in light of a new systematic follow-up investigation, based on Gaia EDR3, of evolved giants (13 carbon stars, 3 S stars and 4 M stars) belonging to intermediate-age open clusters.

We present a statistical study of the dependencies of the shapes and sizes of the photospheric convective cells on the magnetic field properties. This analysis is based on a 2.5 hour long SST observations of active region NOAA 11768. We have blue continuum images taken with a cadence of 5.6 sec that are used for segmentation of individual granules and 270 maps of spectropolarimetric CRISP data allowing us to determine the properties of the magnetic field along with the line-of-sight velocities. The sizes and shapes of the granular cells are dependent on the the magnetic field strength, where the granules tend to be smaller in regions with stronger magnetic field. In the presence of highly inclined magnetic fields, the eccentricity of granules is high and we do not observe symmetric granules in these regions. The mean up-flow velocities in granules as well as the granules intensities decrease with increasing magnetic field strength.

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) could be a potential source for some of the Alfvénic fluctuations observed in the solar wind. The nonlinear evolution of KHI is examined in 2+1 dimensions in the context of magnetohydrodynamics. We derived a nonlinear Schródinger equation (NLSE) and we obtained soliton solutions of this 2+1 dimensions NLSE.

We present results from deep Chandra X-ray observations of the galaxy group NGC 5813. This system shows three pairs of collinear cavities, with each pair associated with an elliptical AGN outburst shock. Due to the relatively regular morphology of this system, and the unique unambiguous detection of three distinct AGN outburst shocks, it is particularly well-suited for the study of AGN feedback and the AGN outburst history. We find that the mean kinetic power is roughly the same for each outburst, and that the total energy associated with the youngest outburst is significantly lower than that of the previous outbursts. This implies that the mean AGN jet power has remained stable for at least 50 Myr, and that the youngest outburst is ongoing. We find that the mean shock heating rate balances the local radiative cooling rate at each shock front, suggesting that AGN outburst shock heating alone is sufficient to offset cooling and establish AGN/ICM feedback within at least the central 30 kpc. Finally, we find non-zero shock front widths that are too large to be explained by particle diffusion, but are instead consistent with arising from broadening of the shock fronts due to propagation through a turbulent ICM with a mean turbulent speed of ~ 70 km s−1.

The central parsec of our Galaxy hosts not only a supermassive black hole, but also a large population of young stars (age <6 Myr) whose presence is puzzling given how inhospitable the region is for star formation. The strong tidal forces require gas densities many orders of magnitude higher than is found in typical molecular clouds. Kinematic observations of this young nuclear cluster show complex structures, including a well-defined inner disk, but also a substantial off-disk population. Spectroscopic and photometric measurements indicate the initial mass function (IMF) differs significantly from the canonical IMF found in the solar neighborhood. These observations have led to a number of proposed star formation scenarios, such as an infalling massive star cluster, a single infalling molecular cloud, or cloud-cloud collisions. I will review recent works on the young stars in the central parsec and discuss connections with young nuclear star clusters in other galaxies, such as M31, and with star formation in the larger central molecular zone.

If interstellar meteors are present among the registered meteor orbits, the distribution of the excesses of their heliocentric velocities should correspond to the distribution of radial velocities of close stars. Hence, for the velocity vi = 20 kms−1 of an interstellar meteor (with respect to the Sun) we obtain a heliocentric velocity vH = 46.6 kms−1 of an interstellar meteor arriving at the Earth. Moreover, a concentration of radiants to the Sun's apex should be observed. An analysis of the hyperbolic meteors among the 4581 photographic orbits of the IAU Meteor Data Center showed that the identification of the vast majority of the hyperbolic orbits in these catalogues has been caused by an erroneous determination of their heliocentric velocity and/or other parameters. Any error in the determination of vH, especially near the parabolic limit, can create an artificial hyperbolic orbit that does not really exist. On the basis of photographic meteors from the IAU MDC, the proportion of possible interstellar meteors decreased significantly (greater than 1 order of magnitude) after error analysis and does not exceed the value 2.5 × 10−4. Neither any concentration of radiants to the Sun's apex, nor any distribution following the motion of interstellar material has been found.

We present a matched-filter, surface density map of the “300 km/s” stream recently discovered in the vicinity of the ultrafaint dwarf galaxy Segue 1.

The paper emphasizes the connection between observations and theory in the Lower Instability Strip. It is argued that the $\delta$ Scuti and $\gamma$ Doradus pulsators are very close relatives in the sense that the $\gamma$ Doradus phenomenon can also be seen in the slightly hotter $\delta$ Scuti variables.

New developments and recent progress are reviewed. Arguments are given why all (or almost all) stars in the Lower Instability Strip are pulsators. Furthermore, the question of the so-called missing modes is answered as very extensive photometry campaigns have revealed a large number of pulsation modes with amplitudes less than one millimag. Arguments are given that the 500+ $\ell$ = 0 to 2 modes predicted for $\delta$ Scuti stars are actually present.

The progress made in developing reliable methods of pulsation mode identification is briefly discussed. With the current convergence of determinations of the Hubble Constant (e.g. The Extragalactic Distance Scale, 1997, Livio, Donahue and Panagia, eds.) to values within ±25% rather than a factor of two, and the clear possibility of determining q0 using high redshift supernovae (Garnavich et al. 1998), the major remaining problem in observational cosmology is the determination of Ω — what is the dark matter, how much is there, and how is it distributed?

The most direct approach to the last two parts of the question has been to study galaxy dynamics, first through the motions of galaxies in binaries, groups and clusters, and in the last decade and a half, driven by the observation of our motion w.r.t. the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and thenotion that DM must be clumped on larger scales than galaxy clusters if (Ω is to be unity, through the study of large scale galaxy flows.

The ratio of the mass density to the closure mass density, Ω, is thought by most observers to be ~0.1-0.3, primarily based on the results of dynamical measurements of galaxy clusters and, more recently, gravitational lensing studies of clusters. In contrast, most theoretical cosmologists opt for a high density universe, Ω = 1.0, based on the precepts of the inflation scenario, the difficulty of forming galaxies in low density models given the observed smoothness of the microwave background radiation, and the observational evidence from the matching of the available large scale flow measurements (and the absolute microwave background dipole velocity) to the local density field. However this last result is extremely controversial—matching the velocity field to the density field derived from IRAS (60μ) selected galaxy samples yields high Ω values (e.g., Dekel et al. 1993) but matching to optically selected samples yields low values (Hudson 1994; Lahav et al. 1994; Santiago et al. 1995). On small scales, the high Ω camp argues that the true matter distribution is much more extended than the distribution of galaxies, so the dynamical mass estimates are biased low.

We present results of a self-consistent model of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of starburst galaxies. Two parameters control the IR SED, the mean pressure in the ISM and the destruction timescale of molecular clouds. Adding a simplified AGN spectrum provides mixing lines on IRAS color : color diagrams. Based on our previous work about a co-evolution of massive black holes (MBH) and their host spheroids, we estimate the cosmic star formation history associated with AGN accretion by ROSAT X-ray All sky surveys. We show: 1) the total amount of star formation associated with MBH growth is at least half of the net star formation at high redshift, which probably totally missed by the current UV/optical deep surveys; 2) the FIR emission from the dust heated by star formation on-going during the MBH growth could be a significant energy source for SCUBA populations; 3)the peak redshift of the massive spheroid formation in this case is around 1.5, not necessary to be at much higher redshift.To search for other articles by the author(s) go to: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

The origin of radio emission in magnetic CVs is a long standing problem without a satisfactory solution. We review the radio observations of both non-magnetic and magnetic CVs and discuss possible emission mechanisms. We pose the following questions: Is the presence of a magnetic white dwarf a necessary condition for radio emission? Is there a single cause for the radio emission or are there several radio emission mechanisms? We revisit the suggestion that asynchronism or at least the lack of strict magnetic locking might be a necessary condition for radio emission.

We use a modified TreeSPH code to simulate the MilkyWay-LMC-SMC system using the latest observational results from Hipparcos on the proper motion of the Clouds. More than 120,000 particles are used for the simulation. Gravitational and hydrodynamic interactions among gaseous and stellar components in the system have been considered. The Magellanic Stream, some high velocity clouds, and the barred structure of LMC are reproduced. A leading gas arm from the SMC is predicted. From the simulation, the long term binary status of LMC-SMC is questioned as frequent encounters between the LMC and the SMC will have difficulty in explaining the survival of the SMC.

We have analyzed the Debrecen Photoheliographic Data (DPD) and the Solar Optical Observing Network (SOON) sunspot group data during the period 1977 – 2015 and find that during the maximum of solar cycle 23 there is a large difference in the mean meridional motion of sunspot groups determined from DPD and SOON data.

We explore a full sphere (2D axisymmetric) kinematic solar dynamo model based on the Babcock-Leighton idea that the poloidal field is generated in the surface layers from the decay of tilted bipolar solar active regions. This model incorporates the helioseismically deduced solar rotation profile and an algorithm for buoyancy motivated from simulations of flux tube dynamics. A prescribed deep meridional circulation plays an important role in the advection of magnetic flux. We specifically address the parity issue and show that – contrary to some recent claims – the Babcock-Leighton dynamo can reproduce solar-like dipolar parity if certain reasonable conditions are satisfied in the solar interior, the most important requirement being that the poloidal field of the two hemispheres be efficiently coupled across the equator.To search for other articles by the author(s) go to: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

We found that in regions of high mass star formation the CS emission correlates well with the dust continuum emission and is therefore a good tracer of the total mass while the N$_2$H$^+$ distribution is frequently very different. This is opposite to their typical behavior in low-mass cores. The behavior of other high density tracers varies from source to source but most of them are closer to CS. Radial density profiles in massive cores are fitted by power laws with indices about −1.6, as derived from the dust continuum emission. The radial temperature dependence on intermediate scales is close to the theoretically expected one for a centrally heated optically thin cloud. The velocity dispersion either remains constant or decreases from the core center to the edge. Several cores including those without known embedded IR sources show signs of infall motions. They can represent the earliest phases of massive protostars. There are implicit arguments in favor of small-scale clumpiness in the cores.

We report results of a study of the ionized gas towards the Galactic center with radio recombination lines at cm wavelengths. Both the Green Bank Telescope and the Very Large Array were utilized to probe the kinematics of the ionized gas on a global scale for both diffuse and discrete sources within the inner 2.0° × 0.5° (l × b). A diffuse ∼0 km s−1 gas, a thermal flux continuum fraction exceeding 40%, and an asymmetry where ∼70% of the ionized gas is found at positive Galactic longitudes are the preliminary results briefly discussed here.
