It is widely accepted that stars do not form in isolation but result from the fragmentation of molecular clouds, which in turn leads to star cluster formation. Over time, clusters dissolve or are destroyed by interactions with molecular clouds or tidal stripping, and their members become part of the general field population. Star clusters are thus among the basic building blocks of galaxies. In turn, star cluster populations, from young associations and open clusters to old globulars, are powerful tracers of the formation, assembly, and evolutionary history of their parent galaxies. Although their importance (e.g., in mapping out the Milky Way) had been recognised for decades, major progress in this area has only become possible in recent years, both for Galactic and extragalactic cluster populations. Star clusters are the observational foundation for stellar astrophysics and evolution, provide essential tracers of galactic structure, and are unique stellar dynamical environments. Star formation, stellar structure, stellar evolution, and stellar nucleosynthesis continue to benefit and improve tremendously from the study of these systems. Additionally, fundamental quantities such as the initial mass function can be successfully derived from modelling either the Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams or the integrated velocity structures of, respectively, resolved and unresolved clusters and cluster populations. Star cluster studies thus span the fields of Galactic and extragalactic astrophysics, while heavily affecting our detailed understanding of the process of star formation in dense environments. This report highlights science results of the last decade in the major fields covered by IAU Commission 37: Star clusters and associations. Here we summarize the discussion that took place after the presentation of papers discussing measurement of abundances from emission lines in H II regions. A cosmological test using 4He is harder than those using the other light elements due to the small dynamic range over which He/H varies for cosmologically interesting parameters. A precision of much better than 1% is needed. This precision challenges both observations and theory. Several of the major uncertainties were identified and methods of improving the accuracy were described.

Activity of late type stars is enhanced by fast rotation, which is maintained in nearly synchronized close binary systems. Magnetic activity originates in the deep convection zones of stars from where magnetic flux tubes emerge to their surfaces. The gravitational forces in binaries help the clustering of activity features giving rise to active longitudes. These preferred longitudes are observed in binaries from dwarfs to giants. Differential rotation is found in many active stars that are components of binary systems. If these binaries are circularized and nearly synchronized, then there will be a corotation latitude in their surfaces, and its position can be determined by observations and by theoretical calculations. Enhanced activity in binaries could have a reverse effect as well: strong magnetism in a binary component can modify the orbital period by the cyclic exchange of kinetic and magnetic energy in its convective envelope.

Commission 53 met in August 12, 2009. Outgoing President Michel Mayor chaired the meeting, and there were several dozen members present, including incoming President Alan Boss, incoming Vice President Alain Lecavelier des Etangs. Commission 53 (C53) was founded at the 2006 Prague General Assembly of the IAU. After a period of 6 years, C53 will come up for renewal at the 2012 IAU General Assembly in Beijing, China. For the moment, more than 150 IAU members have asked to be members of C53 and few dozen non-IAU members having asked to be informed of the commission activity.

Bosonic fields around a spinning black hole can be amplified via ‘superradiance’, a wave analogue of the Penrose process, which extracts energy and momentum from the black hole. For hypothetical ultra-light bosons, with Compton wavelengths on ≳ km scales, such a process can lead to the exponential growth of gravitationally bound states around astrophysical Kerr black holes. If such particles exist, as predicted in many theories of beyond Standard Model physics, then these bosonic clouds give rise to a number of potentially-observable signals. Among the most promising are monochromatic gravitational radiation signals which could be detected at Advanced LIGO and future gravitational wave observatories.

The current evidence concerning the nature of comet nuclei suggests that comets may be sizeable aggregations of interstellar grains. This is a progress report on an effort to find circumstances and processes whereby such aggregations might be formed in the solar system at distances far beyond the proto-planets during the early stages of solar-system development. Under investigation are interactions between the early solar “gale” and the surrounding interstellar gas and dust—the so-called “snowplow effect.” Compression of the gas and resultant motions of the dust coupled with the pressure radiation from the Sun and nearby new stars may, under certain idealized circumstances, produce a high enough concentration of dust for gravitational instability to occur in the dust, thereby producing km-sized coherent bodies. The likelihood or probability of actual comet formation by such processes remain to be determined.

AE Aqr is a cataclysmic variable consisting of a magnetised white dwarf with a spin period of 33 s, and a K-dwarf companion. Because of the rapid spin the magnetosphere of the white dwarf the matter that is flowing over from the secondary cannot accrete onto the white dwarf, and rather it is ejected from the system. AE Aqr is subject to extended flaring activity at all wavelengths from radio via optical to X-rays. I present observations of AE Aqr at 345 and 850 GHz using the LABOCA and SABOCA bolometers on APEX. These observations are good enough to distinguish individual flares at both 345 and 850 GHz, and the SABOCA observation is the first measurement of the system at 850 GHz.

As part of the Herschel Gould Belt Survey (HGBS), the Ophiuchus molecular cloud was imaged in the submillimeter range. Here, we summarize and briefly discuss the main results.

We consider how positions of unresolved pre-main-sequence binaries in the HR diagram compare with the positions of their corresponding primaries and secondaries. As one might expect from simple considerations, the composites appear younger than their components, and have masses intermediate between those of the two stars. However, the amount of the age difference between the composite and its components ranges from nearly zero to as much as an order of magnitude depending upon the specifics of the system such as the reddening and relative spectral types of the objects. We present four examples that illustrate these issues.

A survey for NEO aiming at 90% completeness for a given size range cannot ignore that a significant fraction of the population is observable essentially only at low solar elongation, in the so called “sweet spots” There are several penalties for such low elongation: poorer observing conditions imply a lower limiting magnitude, shorter available time in each night and a more difficult orbit determination. Our aim is to show that these difficulties can be overcome. We have tested the observation procedures and the mathematical methods of orbit determination on two sweet spot test runs. One was performed at ESO La Silla in Jan–Feb 2005, the other at Mauna Kea in Sept–Dec 2005. The results of the tests are presented in this paper; the observed area was not large enough (especially at Mauna Kea) to discover a significant number of new NEO, the purpose was rather to identify the problems. These tests have allowed us to identify all the key elements to be accounted for in the strategy for a successful sweet spot NEO survey. When very short arc observations from different nights have to be identified, a specific difficulty occurs at the sweet spots: the same set of observations from three nights can be fitted to two incompatible orbits, in most cases including one NEO and one MBA. This can lead to two different failures (false positive, false negative) in deciding whether a NEO has been discovered. The classical theory of preliminary orbits shows that three observations at an elongation less than 116.5° can be compatible with two different orbits. From this theory we have derived an algorithm to find the alternate solution, if it exists, when only one is available. In this way we have generated a set of examples of possible discoveries with two well determined but incompatible solutions. Most of the MBA-NEO alternatives have been solved by finding a known MBA which could be identified; in two cases the MBA solution has been confirmed by a later observation.

In this talk, we will show the beaming effect for Fermi/LAT blazars, then we discuss the correlations between γ-ray luminosity and other parameters, such as radio Doppler factors, superluminal motions, and core-dominance parameters. We also compare the Doppler factors determined from the γ-ray luminosity, X-ray emissions, and the short-term time scales with those from other methods. Our discussions suggest that γ-ray emissions may be strongly beamed.

Evolution in the merger rate as a function of redshift is in principle the key observable testing hierarchical models for the formation and evolution of galaxies. However, in practice, direct measurement of this quantity has proven difficult. In this opening review I outline the current best estimates for the merger rate as a function of cosmic epoch, focusing mostly upon recent advances made possible by deep ground-based redshift surveys and morphological studies undertaken with HST. I argue that a marriage of these techniques, in an attempt to determine the space density of mergers amongst the abundant morphologically peculiar population at high redshifts, is probably the most promising currently-available avenue for determining the prevalence of mergers at high redshifts. However, resolved kinematical studies, which seem set to become available in the next few years, are probably the best hope for a definitive determination of the space density of mergers at high redshifts.

Most pre-college teachers in the United States have not been trained in astronomy. In Texas, astronomical concepts enter the pre-college science curriculum at all levels.

During the last six years, I have presented two different types of workshops: intensive three-week summer institutes for rather small numbers of teachers, and shorter 6- to 18-hour workshops for larger groups.

The University of Texas Astronomy Department and McDonald Observatory have hosted five of the intensive institutes. The institutes were established to offer an opportunity to learn astronomy through hands-on activities (Texas education regulations mandate that 40 per cent of all pre-college science classes should be laboratory oriented), and to introduce the teachers to modern astronomical research and facilities.

The emission line spectra of active galactic nuclei fall into three main categories: star formation nuclei (or HII regions), Seyfert nuclei and LINERs (low ionization narrow emission-line regions). A subset of these galactic nuclei has intermediate characteristics between LINERs and HII regions. These so-called transition objects were the subject of numerous studies in the past, but their true nature has remained elusive. It's almost impossible to explain these objects with models that take into account only one ionization mechanism, being it stars, an AGN or shocks. We show how the use of a set of elaborated photoionization models, that account consistently for these parameters (ionization by stars, shocks and/or AGN and dust), constrained by a detailed study of the stellar population properties, can help us understand the nature of these transition objects.To search for other articles by the author(s) go to: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

Sunspot observations inspired solar dynamo theory and continue to do so. Simply counting them established the sunspot cycle and its period. Latitudinal distributions introduced the tough constraint that the source of sunspots moves equator-ward as the cycle progresses. Observations of Hale's polarity law mandated hemispheric asymmetry. How much more can sunspots tell us about the solar dynamo? We draw attention to a few outstanding questions raised by inherent sunspot properties. Namely, how to explain sunspot rotation rates, the incoherence of follower spots, the longitudinal spacing of sunspot groups, and brightness trends within a given sunspot cycle. After reviewing the first several topics, we then present new results on the brightness of sunspots in Cycle 24 as observed with the Helioseismic Magnetic Imager (HMI). We compare these results to the sunspot brightness observed in Cycle 23 with the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI). Next, we compare the minimum intensities of five sunspots simultaneously observed by the Hinode Solar Optical Telescope Spectropolarimeter (SOT-SP) and HMI to verify that the minimum brightness of sunspot umbrae correlates well to the maximum field strength. We then examine 90 and 52 sunspots in the north and south hemisphere, respectively, from 2010 - 2012. Finally, we conclude that the average maximum field strengths of umbra 40 Carrington Rotations into Cycle 24 are 2690 Gauss, virtually indistinguishable from the 2660 Gauss value observed at a similar time in Cycle 23 with MDI.

Observing the supernovae (SNe) associated to the different types of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is one of the few means to study their progenitors. In the past years, it has become clear that GRB-like events are more heterogeneous than previously thought. There is a marked difference between long GRBs, which are produced by the collapse of very massive stars and are normally associated with broad-lined type Ic SNe, and short bursts, which occur when two compact objects merge and that, at least in some cases, can produce an associated kilonova. Moreover, the SNe associated with different sub-types of long GRBs are also seen to differ, especially those associated with ultra-long duration GRBs. To address this issue in a systematic way we started an observing programme in 2010 at the 10.4m GTC telescope. Here we present some results of our programme, including the detection of 12 new GRB-SNe. Highlights of our sample are the discovery of the first spectroscopic SN associated with a highly energetic (Eγ, iso ~ 1054 erg) “cosmological” burst (GRB 130427A), the study of the SN associated with a shock-breakout GRB (GRB 140606B) and the SN associated with the peculiar ultra-long GRB 101225A at z = 0.85. The sample includes also the follow-up of several short GRBs in search for kilonovae emission (GRB 130603B and GRB 160821B are important examples). Amongst our latest results we present the photometric and spectroscopic observations of the SNe associated with GRB 150818A and GRB 161219B.

We present the results of prompt optical follow-up of the electromagnetic counterpart of GW170817 by the Transient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South Collaboration (TOROS). We detected highly significant dimming in the light curves of the counterpart over the course of only 80 minutes of observations obtained ~35 hr after the trigger with the T80-South telescope. A second epoch of observations, obtained ~59 hr after the event with the EABA 1.5m telescope, confirms the fast fading nature of the transient. The observed colors of the counterpart suggest that this event was a “blue kilonova” relatively free of lanthanides.

We have studied the radio pulsar emission beam assuming a) a magnetic dipole field geometry and b) that the beam geometry is defined by the field lines that are not contained within the light cylinder. In general, the beam is compressed in the meridional direction. When the magnetic and rotation axes are aligned the beam is circular and as, the angle between these axes increases, the ratio of meridional to longitudinal dimension decreases monotonically to the minimum value 0.62 when the axes are orthogonal. This beam shape is thus consistent with that inferred from the study of circular polarization in average pulse profiles by Radhakrishnan and Rankin. Evidence for meridional compression is also found in the extensive observational study of Lyne and Manchester (1988).The beam evolution was determined using this data set, the beamwidth being found proportional to P–1/2, where P is the pulsar period. This relation implies that the more rapidly rotating pulsars should have larger beams, and this should aid in their detection. The more numerous, slower pulsars should have somewhat smaller beams than previously determined. This implies that the pulsar birthrate is probably close to the highest current estimates (1 in 25yr).

The optical variability of a sample of 44 FSRQs and 18 SSRQs in the SDSS stripe 82 region is investigated by using the multi-epoch data covering nine years. The variabilities are clearly detected in each source with the amplitude in r band, from 0.18 to 3.46 mag. Twenty-five of 44 FSRQs show a bluer-when-brighter trend (BWB), while only one FSRQ shows a redder-when-brighter trend, which is in contrast to our previous results. Eight of 18 SSRQs display a BWB. We found an anti-correlation between the Eddington ratio and the variability amplitude in r band for SSRQs, which is similar to that in radio-quiet AGNs. This implies that the thermal emission from the accretion disk may be responsible for the variability in SSRQs.
