Interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), ∼ 10μm particles from comets and asteroids, have been collected by NASA from the Earth's stratosphere. We compared carbon X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectra of anhydrous and hydrated interplanetary dust particles and found that anhydrous and hydrated IDPs have similar types and abundances of organic carbon. This is different from results on meteorites, which show that hydrated carbonaceous meteorites contain abundant organic matter, while anhydrous carbonaceous meteorites contain less carbon mostly in elemental form. But all anhydrous carbonaceous meteorites are depleted in moderately volatile and volatile elements in a pattern that suggested they experienced temperatures in excess of 1200°C, a temperature sufficient to destroy any organic matter they originally contained, while many anhydrous IDPs show no evidence of severe heating. These IDP results indicate that the bulk of the pre-biotic organic matter in extraterrestrial materials formed before aqueous processing, possibly by irradiation of C-bearing ices or by a Fisher-Tropsch type process operating in the gas phase of the nebula or in the interstellar medium.

We study the formation and evolution of voids in the dark matter distribution using various simulations of the popular $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter Universe. We identify voids by requiring them to be spherical or elliptical regions of space with a mean overdensity of $-0.8$ or less. The distribution of void sizes in the different simulations shows good overlap. The size of a void is related to the depth of the smoothed density field at that position in the initial conditions. The rescaled mass profiles of voids in the different simulations agree remarkably well. We find a universal void mass profile of the form $\rho(\ltr)/\rho(r_{\rm eff}) \propto \exp[(r/r_{\rm eff})^\alpha]$ where $r_{\rm eff}$ is the effective void radius and $\alpha\sim 2$. IAU Commission 19 began in 1919 with the birth of the IAU at the Brussels Conference, where Standing Committee 19 on Latitude Variations was established as one of 32 standing committees. At the first IAU General Assembly in 1922, Standing Committee 19 became Commission 19 “Variation of Latitude”. In the beginning, the main topic of the Commission was the investigation of polar motion. Later, its activities included observations and theory of Earth rotation and connections between Earth orientation variations and geophysical phenomena. As a result, in 1964 at the XII IAU General Assembly, the Commission was renamed “Rotation of the Earth”. The investigation of Earth orientation variations is primarily based on observations of natural and artificial celestial objects. Therefore, maintenance of the international terrestrial and celestial reference frames, as well as the coordinate transformation between the frames and the improvement of the model of precession/nutation, have always been among the primary Commission topics. In 1987, the IAU through Commissions 19 and 31 “Time” established, jointly with the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, what is now known as the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service. Commission 19 continued to work to develop methods to improve the accuracy and understanding of Earth orientation variations and related reference systems and frames as well as theoretical studies of Earth rotation. In 2015, Commission 19 was renewed as Commission A2 “Rotation of the Earth” continuing Commission 19’s functions and linking the astronomical community to other scientific organizations such as the International Association of Geodesy, International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry, International GNSS Service, International Laser Ranging Service and International DORIS Service. During its entire history, IAU Commission 19/A2 has always worked in close cooperation with these and other related services to improve the accuracy and consistency of the Earth orientation parameters and celestial and terrestrial reference frames.

Throughout most of the Local Group, globular clusters (GCs) remain recognisable as extended objects in ground-based images taken in good seeing conditions. However, studying the full extent of the GC systems is challenging because of the large sky area that needs to be surveyed and recent years have seen dramatic progress in our knowledge of GC populations in nearby galaxies, thanks to large imaging surveys. At the same time, techniques for deriving detailed abundances from integrated-light spectra of GCs are maturing so that detailed comparisons of the chemical composition for GCs in different galaxies can now be made. Such comparisons may shed important light on the properties of proto-galactic fragments that were accreted onto galaxy halos. Nevertheless, our census of Local Group GCs probably remains far from complete, in particular at low luminosities and for very extended clusters.

One of the most intriguing open questions of today's astrophysics is the jet physical properties and the location and the mechanisms for the production of MeV, GeV, and TeV gamma-rays in AGN jets. M87 is a privileged laboratory for a detailed study of the properties of jets, owing to its proximity, its massive black hole, and its conspicuous emission at radio wavelengths and above. We started on November 2009 a monitoring program with the e-EVN at 5 GHz. We present here results of these multi-epoch observations and discuss the two episodes of activity at energy E>100 GeV that occured in this period. One of these observations was obtained at the same day of the first high energy flare. We added to our results literature data obtained with the VLBI and VLA. A clear change in the proper motion velocity of HST-1 is present at the epoch ~2005.5. In the time range 1998 – 2005.5 the apparent velocity is subluminal, and superluminal (~2.7c) after 2005.5.

The Phase-Induced Amplitude Coronagraph (PIAAC) uses a lossless beam apodization, performed by aspheric mirrors, to produce a high contrast PSF. Thanks to the lossless apodization, this concept offers a unique combination of high theoretical throughput ($\approx$100%), high angular resolution ($\lambda/d$), small inner working angle (${\approx} 1.5 \lambda/d$), low chromaticity and low sensitivity to pointing errors or angular star diameter. Together, these characteristics make the PRC an ideal choice for direct imaging of extrasolar terrestrial planets (ETPs) from space. We show that a visible telescope smaller than 4m would then achieve the goals of the TPF mission, while other coronagraphs considered for TPF require telescope diameters typically 2 to 3 times larger. On a large size (8m) space telescope, ETPs can be searched for around a significantly larger sample of stars, thus enabling a much higher scientific return.

A brief review of the observational properties of evolved massive stars is presented. In the pursuit of clues for their rotation, formidable difficulties are encountered. At the same time, common features emerge between B[e] supergiants, Luminous Blue Variables and Wolf-Rayet stars. Several indications of rapid rotation are found, mostly indirect ones, in each class. It is shown that fast rotation can probably survive the mass loss events which characterize the late evolution of massive stars.

The review examines recent observational and theoretical results on the nonradial pulsation of δ Scuti stars. The dominant pulsation modes are rotationally split p modes with = 1 and 2, and radial orders 1 to 4. Line-profile analyses also reveal the existence of additional high-degree modes. Nonradial pulsation is usually accompanied by slow amplitude and period variability. The small-amplitude single-mode variables are shown to be typical nonradial pulsators.

The interesting cases of 1 Mon and θ2 Tau are examined in more detail. The present status of asteroseismolgy of the δ Scuti stars is reviewed.

The periods of the four evolved δ Scuti variables studied are found to be decreasing, although stellar evolution predicts period increases due to larger radii. New work on the multiple periods of AI Vel shows that, apart from stellar evolution, an additional mechanism must exist to cause temporary period changes. It is argued that for a larger sample of stars the average period change must nevertheless reflect evolutionary changes.

The Crab pulsar was first detected soon after the discovery of pulsars, and has long been studied for its unique traits. One of these traits, giant pulses that can be upwards of 1000 times brighter than the average pulse, was key to the Crab’s initial detection. Giant pulses are only seen in a few pulsars, and their energy distributions distinguish them from normal pulsed emission. There have been many studies over a period of decades to measure the power-law slope of these energy distributions, which provide insight into the possible emission mechanism of these giant pulses.

The 42-foot telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory monitors the Crab pulsar on a daily basis. We have single-pulse data dating back to 2012, containing roughly 1,000,000 giant pulses, the largest sample of Crab giant pulses to date. This large set of giant pulses allows us to do a range of science, including pulse-width studies and in-depth studies of giant-pulse energy distributions. The latter are particularly interesting, as close inspection of the high-energy tail of the energy distribution allows us to investigate the detectability of extragalactic giant-pulsing pulsars. Also, by calculating rates from these energy distributions, we may be able to shed light on a possible link between Fast Radio Bursts and giant pulses.

In the framework of the restricted three body problem, the resonant periodic orbits associated with the Kuiper belt dynamics are studied. Particularly, all the first, second and third order exterior mean motion resonances with Neptune located up to 50A.U. and the asymmetric resonances (beyond the 48 A.U.) are considered. We present the bifurcation points of families of periodic orbits of the planar circular problem from which families of periodic orbits are generated in the planar elliptic and in the 3D circular problem. Similarities and differences between the various resonant cases are noticed. Included in the nine adopted recommendations of the IAU Working Group on Reference Systems (Hughes, et. al., in 1991), were recommendations for the introduction of Geocentric Coordinate Time (TCG) and Barycentric CoordinateTime (TCB), the renaming of the Terrestrial Dynamical Time (TDT) as Terrestrial Time (TT), and the approval to continue the use of Barycentric Dynamical Time (TDB) when that is desirable. The relationships between these different time scales and the reason for their introduction was given by Seidelmann and Fukushima (1992). Since it was recognized that there were some unresolved issues as a result of these recommendations, a subcommittee of the Working Group on Astronomical Standards was established for Issues on Time.

Astrometric observations with the VLBA with accuracies approaching ~ 10 μas are being conducted in order to better understand the Galaxy. The location of Sgr A* on infrared images can be determined with an accuracy of a few mas, using stars with SiO maser emission as a calibration grid for infrared images. The apparent proper motion of Sgr A*, which is dominated by the effects of the orbit of the Sun around the Galactic center, has been measured with high accuracy. This measurement strongly constrains Θ0R0 and offers a dynamical definition of the Galactic plane with Sgr A* at its origin. The intrinsic motion of Sgr A* is very small and comparable to that expected for a supermassive black hole. When combined with infrared results, this provides overwhelming evidence that Sgr A* is a supermassive black hole. Finally, we are engaged in a large project to map the spiral structure and kinematics of the Galaxy. Preliminary trigonometric parallaxes, obtained with the VLBA, to eight massive star forming regions are presented.

Exozodiacal dust clouds are thought to be the extrasolar analogs of the Solar System's zodiacal dust. Studying these systems provides insights in the architecture of the innermost regions of planetary systems, including the Habitable Zone. Furthermore, the mere presence of the dust may result in major obstacles for direct imaging of earth-like planets. Our EXOZODI project aims to detect and study exozodiacal dust and to explain its origin. We are carrying out the first large, near-infrared interferometric survey in the northern (CHARA/FLUOR) and southern (VLTI/PIONIER) hemispheres. Preliminary results suggest a detection rate of up to 30% around A to K type stars and interesting trends with spectral type and age. We focus here on presenting the observational work carried out by our team.

Two pairs of solid test-masses have been considered to perform in space the test of the universality of free fall with an accuracy of at least 10−15. These cylindrical masses are precisely at the heart of the MICROSCOPE mission instrument comprising two differential electrostatic accelerometers. These masses shall exhibit material quality, shapes, positions and alignments in regard to stringent experimental requirements. Indeed the space experiment is based on the control of the two masses submitted to the same gravity acceleration along the same orbit at 810 km altitude with an accuracy of 10−11 m. Thus effects of Earth and satellite gravity gradients shall be contained as well as any other disturbances of the mass motions induced by their magnetic susceptibility or electrical dissymmetries, by outgassing of the materials or radiation emissivity. Furthermore, the electrostatic levitation of the two masses depends dramatically on the mass shapes and electrical properties in particular for the definition of the sensitive axes orientation. All these aspects will be presented from the mass characteristics to the space MICROSCOPE experiment performance.

We test whether Be star disks rotate in a Keplerian or an Angular Momentum Conserving fashion. This is done by employing sub-milli arcsecond spectroastrometry around Hα. We spatially resolve the disks, and are the first to do so at such a high spectral resolution. We fit the emission line profiles with parametric models. The Keplerian models reproduce the spectro-astrometry, whereas the AMC models do not, thereby supporting the viscous disk model for Be stars.

We investigated the large scale atmospheric circulation of Gl581g, a potentially habitable planet around an M dwarf star, using an idealized dry global circulation model (GCM) with simplified thermal forcing as a first step towards a systematic extended parameter study. The results are compared with the work of Joshi et al. (1997) who investigated a tidally-locked habitable Earth analogue with less than half the rotation period of Gl581g. The extent, form and strength of the atmospheric circulation in each model generally agree with each other, even though the models differ in key parameters such as planetary radius, surface gravity, forcing scheme and rotation period. The substellar point is associated with an uprising direct circulation-branch of a Hadley-like cell with return flow over the poles. It is compelling to assume that the substellar point of a tidally locked terrestrial exoplanet behaves dynamically like the Earth's tropic associated with clouds and precipitation, making it an ideal target for habitability.

Although Einstein's general relativity has passed all the tests so far, alternative theories are still required for deeper understanding of the nature of gravity. Double pulsars provide us a significant opportunity to test them. In order to probe some modified gravities which try to explain some astrophysical phenomena without dark matter, we use periastron advance $\dot{\omega}$ of four binary pulsars (PSR B1913+16, PSR B1534+12, PSR J0737-3039 and PSR B2127+11C) to constrain their Yukawa parameters: λ = (3.97 ± 0.01) × 108m and α = (2.40 ± 0.02) × 10−8. It might help us to distinguish different gravity theories and get closer to the new physics.

Cycle lengths of active stars are derived from long-term photometric monitoring of their secular light variability. With the help of photographic data archives the lengths of the datasets are extended for HK Lac and V833 Tau. Using time-frequency analysis it is shown that the cycles are continuously changing in time. Thus, the reported cycle lengths derived by simple Fourier analysis are mean values that are valid only for a given time interval.

We present new and independent estimates of the distances to the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) using near-infrared (NIR) and optical–NIR period–Wesenheit (PW) relations. The slopes of the PW relations are, within the dispersion, linear over the entire period range and independent of metal content. The absolute zero points were fixed using Galactic Cepheids with distances based on the infrared surface-brightness method. The true distance modulus we found for the Large Magellanic Cloud—(m − M)0 = 18.48 ± 0.01 ± 0.10 mag—and the Small Magellanic Cloud—(m − M)0 = 18.94 ± 0.01 ± 0.10 mag—agree quite well with similar distance determinations based on robust distance indicators. We also briefly discuss the evolutionary and pulsation properties of MC Cepheids.

The first generation of stars to form in the universe may have been very massive, and, due to the absence of initial metals, they could have retained most of their mass until their death and thus explode as pair instability supernovae. These supernovae encounter the late burning phases beyond carbon burning in an implosive/explosive way, leading to very powerful thermonuclear-powered explosions, up to a hundred times more powerful than ordinary supernovae. For primordial stars, these explosions also produce a peculiar abundance pattern, showing a strong odd-even pattern in the elemental abundances, a sharp drop-off of nucleosynthetic production beyond the iron group, and no r-process contribution. These results are greatly altered if only a small mass of 14N is dredged down into the helium burning core before the star becomes unstable. Such mixing could be a consequence of differential rotation or convective overshooting.
