The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) could be a potential source for some of the Alfvénic fluctuations observed in the solar wind. The nonlinear evolution of KHI is examined in 2+1 dimensions in the context of magnetohydrodynamics. We derived a nonlinear Schródinger equation (NLSE) and we obtained soliton solutions of this 2+1 dimensions NLSE.

If interstellar meteors are present among the registered meteor orbits, the distribution of the excesses of their heliocentric velocities should correspond to the distribution of radial velocities of close stars. Hence, for the velocity vi = 20 kms−1 of an interstellar meteor (with respect to the Sun) we obtain a heliocentric velocity vH = 46.6 kms−1 of an interstellar meteor arriving at the Earth. Moreover, a concentration of radiants to the Sun's apex should be observed. An analysis of the hyperbolic meteors among the 4581 photographic orbits of the IAU Meteor Data Center showed that the identification of the vast majority of the hyperbolic orbits in these catalogues has been caused by an erroneous determination of their heliocentric velocity and/or other parameters. Any error in the determination of vH, especially near the parabolic limit, can create an artificial hyperbolic orbit that does not really exist. On the basis of photographic meteors from the IAU MDC, the proportion of possible interstellar meteors decreased significantly (greater than 1 order of magnitude) after error analysis and does not exceed the value 2.5 × 10−4. Neither any concentration of radiants to the Sun's apex, nor any distribution following the motion of interstellar material has been found.

A small subset of Galactic O-stars possess surface magnetic fields that alter the outflowing stellar wind by magnetically confining it. Key to the magnetic confinement is that it induces rotational modulation of spectral lines over the full EM domain; this allows us to infer basic quantities, e.g., mass-loss rate and magnetic geometry. Here, we present an empirical study of the Hα line in Galactic magnetic O-stars to constrain the mass fed from the stellar base into the magnetosphere, using realistic multi-dimensional magnetized wind models, and compare with theoretical predictions. Our results suggest that it may be reasonable to use mass-feeding rates from non-magnetic wind theory if the absolute mass-loss rate is scaled down according to the amount of wind material falling back upon the stellar surface. This provides then some empirical support to the proposal that such magnetic O-stars might evolve into heavy stellar-mass black holes (Petit et al.2017).

Binary stars can interact via mass transfer when one member (the primary) ascends onto a giant branch. The amount of gas ejected by the binary and the amount of gas accreted by the secondary over the lifetime of the primary influence the subsequent binary phenomenology. Some of the gas ejected by the binary will remain gravitationally bound and its distribution will be closely related to the formation of planetary nebulae. We investigate the nature of mass transfer in binary systems containing an AGB star by adding radiative transfer to the AstroBEAR AMR Hydro/MHD code.

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey is now complete, and the full data are public. 2dFGRS was the first survey to observe more than 100,000 redshifts, making possible precise measurements of many aspects of galaxy clustering, which can be studied as a function of galaxy spectral type, and also of broad-band colour. Early-type galaxies are more strongly clustered than late types, with a relative bias of b = 1.25 ± 0.09 on large scales. For both types, luminosity dependence of clustering is detected at high significance, and is well described by a relative bias of b/b* = 0.85 + 0.15(L/L*). This is consistent with the observation that L* in rich clusters is brighter than the global value by 0.28 ± 0.08 mag. Redshift-space distortions from large-scale infall velocities measure the distortion parameter β = Ω0.6m/b = 0.49 ± 0.09. The power spectrum is measured to ≲ 10% accuracy for k > 0.02 h Mpc--1, and is well fitted by a CDM model with Ωmh = 0.18 ± 0.02 and a baryon fraction of 0.17 ± 0.06. The 2dFGRS plays an essential role in breaking model degeneracies inherent in CMB data; a joint analysis with WMAP results requires Ωm = 0.25 ± 15% and h = 0.73 ± 5%, assuming scalar fluctuations.

The Be phenomenon, i.e. the ejection of matter from Be stars into a circumstellar disk, has been a long lasting mystery. In the last few years, the CoRoT satellite brought clear evidence that Be outbursts are directly correlated to pulsations and rapid rotation. In particular the stochastic excitation of gravito-inertial modes, such as those detected by CoRoT in the hot Be star HD 51452, is enhanced thanks to rapid rotation. These waves increase the transport of angular momentum and help to bring the already rapid stellar rotation to its critical value at the surface, allowing the star to eject material. Below we summarize the recent observational and theoretical findings and describe the new picture of the Be phenomenon which arose from these results.

Observations of the Zeeman effect in OH and H2O masers provide valuable information about magnetic field strength and direction, but only for the very high density gas in which such masers are found. In order to understand the role of magnetic fields in the evolution of the interstellar medium and in the star formation process, it is essential to consider the maser results in the broader context of magnetic fields in lower density gas. This contribution will (very briefly) summarize the state of observational knowledge of magnetic fields in the non-masing gas. Magnetic fields in H I and molecular clouds may be observed via the Zeeman effect, linear polarization of dust emission, and linear polarization of spectral-line emission. Useful parameters that can be inferred from observations are the mass-to-flux ratio and the scaling of field strength with density. The former tells us whether magnetic fields exert sufficient pressure to provide support against gravitational contraction; the latter tells whether or not magnetic fields are sufficiently strong to determine the nature (spherical or disk geometry) of the contraction. Existing observations will be reviewed. Results are that the strength of interstellar magnetic fields remains roughly invariant at 5-10 microgauss between densities of 0.1 cm−3 < n(H) < 1,000 cm−3 but increases proportional to approximately the square root of density at higher densities. Moreover, the mass-to-flux ratio is significantly subcritical (strong magnetic support with respect to gravity) in diffuse H I clouds that are not self-gravitating, but becomes approximately critical in high-density molecular cloud cores. This suggests that MCs and GMCs form primarily by accumulation of matter along magnetic field lines, a process that will increase density but not magnetic field strength. How clumps in GMCs evolve will then depend crucially on the mass-to-flux ratio in each clump. Present data suggest that magnetic fields play a very significant role in the evolution of molecular clouds and in the star formation process.

We are conducting multi-transition observations of circumstellar line emission from common molecules such as HCN, SiO, CS, SiS and CN for a large sample of AGB stars with varying photospheric C/O-ratios and mass-loss charachteristics. Our recently published results for SiO and SiS clearly show that major constraints on the relative roles of non-equilibrium chemistry, dust condensation, and photodissociation can be obtained from the study of circumstellar molecular line emission. Presented here are also preliminary results based on detailed radiative transfer modelling of HCN line emission.

In this review we discuss possible systematic errors inherent in classical 1D LTE abundance analyses of late-type stars for the light elements (here: H, He, Li, Be and B). The advent of realistic 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres and the availability of non-LTE line formation codes place the stellar analyses on a much firmer footing and indeed drastically modify the astrophysical interpretations in many cases, especially at low metallicities. For the Teff-sensitive hydrogen lines both stellar granulation and non-LTE are likely important but the combination of the two has not yet been fully explored. A fortuitous near-cancellation of significant but opposite 3D and non-LTE effects leaves the derived 7Li abundances largely unaffected but new atomic collisional data should be taken into account. We also discuss the impact on 3D non-LTE line formation on the estimated lithium isotopic abundances in halo stars in light of recent claims that convective line asymmetries can mimic the presence of 6Li. While Be only have relatively minor non-LTE abundance corrections, B is sensitive even if the latest calculations imply smaller non-LTE effects than previously thought.

In the past twenty years there has been a great amount of growth in radiometric observing methods, as well as in classical optical observations. Through radar ranging and Doppler observations of the planets and spacecraft, we have been able to improve our knowledge of the location and motion of the planets by several orders of magnitude and have succeeded in planning and executing space missions which would have been difficult if not impossible to plan and to perform utilizing the classical ephemerides. We will outline the goals and methods employed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in its effort to develop improved ephemerides which accurately reflect the motions of planets in an inertial system.

We have used far-ultraviolet spectroscopy and broad-band photometry to identify and study dynamically-formed stellar exotica in the core of 47 Tucanane. Here, we present a subset of our main results, including: (i) the spectroscopic confirmation of three cataclysmic variables; (ii) the discovery of stripped sub-giant core in a binary system with a dark primary; (iii) the discovery of a Helium white dwarf; (iv) the discovery of a blue straggler with a white dwarf companion.

We discuss some benefits and pitfalls when combining conceptually different types of closure approximations into complete Reynolds stress models of stellar convection.

The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), a fully approved and funded project of the European Space Agency (ESA), is an astronomical satellite, which will operate at wavelengths from 3–200 μm. ISO will provide astronomers with a unique facility of unprecedented sensitivity for a detailed exploration of the universe ranging from objects in the solar system right out to distant extragalactic sources. The satellite essentially consists of a large cryostat containing at launch about 2300 litres of superfluid helium to maintain the Ritchey-Chrétien telescope, the scientific instruments and the optical baffles at temperatures between 2K and 8K. The telescope has a 60-cm diameter primary mirror and is diffraction-limited at a wavelength of 5μm. A pointing accuracy of a few arc seconds is provided by a three-axis-stabilisation system consisting of reaction wheels, gyros and optical sensors. ISO’s instrument complement consists of four instruments, namely: a photo-polarimeter (3–200μm), a camera (3–17μm), a short wavelength spectrometer (3–45μm) and a long wavelength spectrometer (45–180μm). These instruments are being built by international consortia of scientific institutes and will be delivered to ESA for in-orbit operations. ISO will be launched in 1993 by an Ariane 4 into an elliptical orbit (apogee 70000km and perigee 1000km) and will be operational for at least 18 months. In keeping with ISO’s role as an observatory, two-thirds of its observing time will be made available to the european and american astronomical community.

It is an important subject of space weather to forecast accurate arrival time of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) at the Earth. Determination of initial speeds of CMEs is an important factor for this. The TEDI (TripleSpec - Exoplanet Discovery Instrument) is a dedicated instrument for the near-infrared radial velocity search for planetary companions to low-mass stars with the goal of achieving meters-per-second radial velocity precision. Heretofore, such planet searches have been limited almost entirely to the optical band and to stars that are bright in this band. Consequently, knowledge about planetary companions to the populous but visibly faint low-mass stars is limited. In addition to the opportunity afforded by precision radial velocity searches directly for planets around low mass stars, transits around the smallest M dwarfs offer a chance to detect the smallest possible planets in the habitable zones of the parent stars. As has been the the case with followup of planet candidates detected by the transit method requiring radial velocity confirmation, the capability to undertake efficient precision radial velocity measurements of mid-late M dwarfs will be required. TEDI has been commissioned on the Palomar 200” telescope in December 2007, and is currently in a science verification phase.

This paper develops a new statistical approach to the study of the axial rotational velocities of the stars, by considering the break-up limit or any upper limit for the equatorial rotational velocities. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) For random orientation of the axis of rotation, the frequency function of the inclination α to the line of sight is not sina, as assumed until now. (2) For stars with the same break-up velocity vb, the distribution of α is given by :

where f(y) is the distribution of the apparent velocities y = v sin α, v being the true rotational velocity. New integral equations governing the frequency function of α, y and v have been derived and the correct procedure to treat observations has been discussed; a simple method is also suggested to get an approximate trend of the distribution of the true velocities directly from the observed histogram. The method of analysis proposed in this paper has been applied to a re-discussion of the rotational behaviour of a group of Be stars.

In the late stage of planet formation, planetesimals are perturbed by large (proto) planets. There are four fates of planetesimals, (1) to collide with planets, (2) to escape from the planetary region, (3) to survive in the planetary region, and (4) to fall onto the central star. The ratios of these fates depend on initial orbital parameters. We performed numerical simulations of gravitational scattering of planetesimals by a planet. We obtained the escape rate of planetesimals and its dependence on the orbital parameters of the planetesimals and the planet. We also calculated the rate for increasing the semimajor axis to more than 3000AU. Following up on the detailed results from our searches for z~ 6–10 galaxies using gravitional lensing clusters descrived in Richard et al. (2006), we have obtained new observations, which are presented here. For a general overview of the project see Schaerer et al. (2006). First, deep HST/ACS observations in the z-band confirm 17 out of 18 high redshift candidates as optical drop-out objects; the remaining object appears faint and star-like. Second, Spitzer/IRAC images at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 μm have been obtained. 11 out of 18 candidates are in “free”, uncominated regions. These 11 high-z candidates are undetected, with upper limits which are compatible with their SED if these objects are blue star-forming galaxies at high redshift (see Fig. 1). In conclusion, our new observations corroborate so far the high-z nature of the majority of the candidates.

M dwarf stars are attractive targets in the search for habitable worlds as a result of their relative abundance and proximity, making them likely targets for future direct detection efforts. Hot super-Earths as well as gas giants have already been detected around a number of early M dwarfs, and the former appear to be the high-mass end of the population of rocky, terrestrial exoplanets. The Carnegie Astrometric Planet Search (CAPS) program has been underway since March 2007, searching ~ 100 nearby late M, L, and T dwarfs for gas giant planets on orbits wide enough for habitable worlds to orbit interior to them. The CAPSCam-N camera on the 2.5-m du Pont telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory has demonstrated the ability to detect planets as low in mass as Saturn orbiting at several AU around late M dwarfs within 15 pc. Over the next decade, the CAPS program will provide new constraints on the planetary census around late M dwarf stars, and hence on the suitability of these nearby planetary systems for supporting life.

We have compiled the X-ray characteristic properties for a unique and homogeneous sample of Type 2 AGN with water megamaser activity observed by XMM-Newton and for a control sample of non-maser galaxies, both analyzed in a uniform way. A comparison of the luminosity distributions confirms previous results (from smaller and/or less systematic studies) that water maser galaxies appear more luminous than non-maser sources. In addition, the maser phenomenon is associated with more complex X-ray spectra, higher column densities and higher equivalent widths of the Fe Kα line. Both a sufficiently luminous X-ray source and a high absorbing column density in the line of sight favor the appearance of the water megamaser phenomenon in AGN.
