The rate of nitrogen uptake by seven Sphagnum species, which from a gradient from hummock to hollow and from ombrotrophic to minerotrophic conditions, was measured as the decrease in the concentrations of NH4+ and NO3− from solutions in which capitula were grown under laboratory conditions.

The highest uptake rate was by individuals of each species with large capitula and a high number of ion exchange sites, i.e. lawn species (S. pulchrum, S. fallax, S. papillosum and S. magellanicum). On a dry-mass basis, the most effective species were the hummock species (S. fuscum and S. rubellum), even though these species have a low dry mass. Hummock species, which occur in high densities and have high potential N-uptake rates on a dry-mass basis, were the most effective species in retaining available nitrogen.

The size and distribution of Cortinarius rotundisporus genets at three sclerophyll forest field sites in New South Wales, Australia, were estimated by using microsatellite-primed PCR (MS-PCR) of DNA extracted from sporocarp tissue. MS-PCR fingerprints generated with the primers (GTG)5 and (GACA)4 indicated that two to five genets were present at each site, with each site being characterized by a single large genet (9–30 m in diameter). Analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-RFLP patterns from individual sporocarps used in the study suggested that three distinct RFLP types were present in the sampled C. rotundisporus population. ITS sequence data indicate that the three RFLP types had less than 88.4% sequence identity to each other, strongly suggesting that C. rotundisporus is a complex of three species.

Plants use chemical defences to reduce damage from herbivores and the effectiveness of these defences can be altered by biotic and abiotic factors, such as herbivory and soil resource availability. Streptanthus polygaloides, a nickel (Ni) hyperaccumulator, possesses both Ni-based defences and organic defences (glucosinolates), but the extent to which these defences interact and respond to environmental conditions is unknown. S. polygaloides plants were grown on high-Ni and low-Ni soil and concentrations of Ni and glucosinolates were compared with those of the congeneric non-hyperaccumulator, S. insignus spp. insignus, grown under the same conditions. Ni contents were highest (4000 μg g−1 dry tissue) in S. polygaloides plants grown on high-Ni soil. Glucosinolate content was significantly higher in S. insignus than in S. polygaloides suggesting that plants defended by Ni produce a lower concentration of organic defences. In a separate experiment, high-Ni S. polygaloides plants were exposed to simulated herbivory or live folivores to determine the inducibility of Ni-based and organic defences. Contents of Ni were not affected by either herbivory treatment, whereas glucosinolate concentrations were >30% higher in damaged plants. We concluded that the Ni-based defence of S. polygaloides is not induced by herbivory.

Two-yr-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings were grown in sand culture for 1 yr with a generous supply of a balanced nutrient solution. Trees were repotted into clean sand in February 1998 and given either a reduced or adequate nutrient supply containing enriched 15N, 41K and 26Mg to label nutrient uptake during spring 1998. Trees doubled their biomass during the experiment. Whole-tree net photosynthesis was reduced by 43% after 95 d in trees that received the lower nutrient supply (P < 0.001), although differences in biomass between the two treatments were less pronounced. Remobilization contributed 83, 82 and 52% of the N, K and Mg, respectively, used to support growth of new tissues in trees that received reduced nutrient supply. Those receiving the higher nutrient supply still obtained 44–59% of nutrients used for spring growth of new tissues from remobilization. Current nutrient supply had no significant effect on the amount of N or Mg remobilized to new tissues but K remobilization was less in trees that received the lower nutrient supply (P = 0.025). The importance of remobilization in young trees and problems associated with quantifying internal cycling of nutrients are discussed.

Seeds of the wetland legume, Lotus uliginosus, were germinated and grown in vermiculite which was either continuously flooded or well-drained. Plants from both treatments were infected by Mesorhizobium loti strain DUS341 via a ‘classical’ root hair pathway, although some flooded plants appeared to be infected via enlarged epidermal cells. Subsequent to infection by M. loti, nodule meristems, which had developed within the root outer cortex, were penetrated by infection threads that released bacteria into the meristematic cells. The infection threads and infection droplets were immunogold labelled with monoclonal antibodies (MAC265 and MAC236) that recognize epitopes (at approx. 155/170 and 170/210 kDa, respectively) on a glycoprotein component of the matrix that surrounded the bacteria within the threads or droplets. Although labelling of infection threads or infection droplets with MAC236 was stronger than that with MAC265, both antibodies strongly labelled material occluding intercellular spaces in the cortices of developing nodules that had not yet expressed nitrogenase (as determined by a lack of signal after immunogold labelling with an antibody raised against nitrogenase component II). After 60 d, nitrogenase activity, shoot and root dry weights, and nodule fresh weight per plant did not differ between the treatments. After a further 30 d submergence, the flooded stems developed extensive aerenchyma and there was profuse development of (nodulated) adventitious roots. Nodules also formed at the junction of adventitious roots and the subtending stem and these were connected vascularly to a small stalk of tissue which gave rise to both a nodule and an adventitious root. The flooded nodules had prominent lenticels, and possible air pathways from the atmosphere to the nitrogen-fixing bacteroids are discussed.

This paper reviews the results of several years' study by a multidisciplinary team comprising geneticists, physiologists, ecologists and statisticians of abiotic stress tolerance in barley. The strategy involves genetic fingerprinting of wild barley lines (Hordeum spontaneum C. Koch) from a range of habitats and testing these for responses to abiotic stresses under controlled conditions. Multiple regression analysis is used to identify genetic markers associated with experimentally determined stress responses. These data are related to site-of-origin ecogeographic data and used to identify areas of useful wild variation. Markers associated with traits of interest can be mapped in genetic mapping populations, revealing areas of the barley genome carrying genes controlling stress responses. This paper highlights our work on associations of amplied fragment length polymorphisms with salt tolerance and describes some initial results of the use of SSRs in studying drought tolerance in barley.

In previously reported laboratory experiments, infection of Rumex obtusifolius by the rust fungus Uromyces rumicis was decreased on leaves which had prior herbivory by the beetle Gastrophysa viridula. In this paper we investigate whether this interaction is robust for natural infection by a variety of fungi in field experiments carried out in spring and autumn with plants given different levels of nitrogen fertilization. Grazing by G. viridula led to a decrease in lesion density of Ramularia rubella and Venturia rumicis in the spring and V. rumicis and U. rumicis in the autumn experiment. For V. rumicis and U. rumicis significant reductions in lesion density occurred on the undamaged leaves of damaged plants, compared with similar leaves on undamaged plants, suggesting systemic induced resistance. This induced resistance was usually independent of the amount of nitrogen fertilization, although the inhibitory effect of grazing on R. rubella in the spring and V. rumicis in the autumn experiment was enhanced by increasing nitrogen fertilization and was inhibited by increasing nitrogen fertilization for V. rumicis in the spring. In both experiments, the lesion density of V. rumicis was greater on leaves on which R. rubella was also present, and the presence of U. rumicis in the autumn experiment was linked to a similar but greater effect on V. rumicis lesion density. We found no evidence of induced resistance by fungi against fungi in these experiments. We highlight the complex interactions between inhibitory and facilitatory processes acting on leaf fungal infection. These results are compared with the proposed molecular mechanisms of induced resistance(s) and we consider the benefits of closer integration between molecular and ecological investigations of induced resistances that occur in the field.

Exposure to ozone (O3) has been shown to decrease the allocation of carbon to tree roots. Decreased allocation of carbon to roots might disrupt root metabolism and rhizosphere organisms. The effects of soil type and shoot O3 exposure on below-ground respiration and soil microbial populations were investigated using container-grown ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) growing in a low-nutrient soil, or a fertilizer-amended organic potting media, and exposed to one of three levels of O3 for two growing seasons in open-top exposure chambers. A closed system, designed to measure below-ground respiratory activity (CO2 production, O2 consumption and RQ-Respiration Quotient; (CO2[ratio ]O2) of plants growing in pots, was used monthly to monitor below-ground respiration of 3-yr-old ponderosa pine.

Although seasonal differences were detected, CO2 production (μmol h−1 g−1 total root d. wt), O2 consumption (μmol h−1 g−1 total root d. wt) and RQ (CO2[ratio ]O2) increased with increasing O3 exposure level. Seasonal patterns showed increased respiration rates during periods of rapid root growth in spring and early fall. Respiration quotient tended to decrease during known periods of active root growth in control seedlings, but a similar response was not observed in O3-treated seedlings. Responses to O3 were greatest in the soil-grown plants, which had a lower fertility level than media-grown plants. Although root d. wt was decreased, root[ratio ]shoot ratios did not change in response to O3. Soil-grown plants had higher root-shoot ratios than media-grown plants, reflecting the lower fertility of the soil.

Plant exposure to O3 was found to affect both active and total populations of soil organisms. In both organic potting media and in soil, biomass of active soil fungi, and the ratio of active-fungal to active-bacterial biomass increased with increasing plant exposure to O3. The effect of O3 on total fungal and bacterial biomass was not linear: at low O3 levels, total fungal and bacterial biomass increased; at the high O3 level, total fungal and bacterial biomass decreased compared with those of controls.

Our results show that O3 exposure to shoots significantly disrupts CO2 production and O2 consumption of soil and roots of ponderosa pine seedlings. Below-ground respiratory differences were thought to be a result of changes in respiratory substrates, carbon refixation within the plant and soil microbial activity. Ozone also changes below-ground RQ, suggesting that O3 substantially disrupts root metabolism and interactions with rhizosphere organisms. Ozone exposure of ponderosa pine grown in different soil types can disrupt below-ground respiration and influence populations of soil organisms without alteration of biomass partitioning between above- and below-ground plant components. Collectively, the effect of O3 on the below-ground system is of concern since it is likely that these changes are accompanied by a change in the ability of root systems to acquire nutrient and water resources and possibly to synthesize amino acids and proteins necessary for normal plant function.

Recent years have seen a flurry of research activity concerning the hyperaccumulation of heavy metals by plants. Much of the interest in hyperaccumulation has been fueled by the commercial potential of phytoremediation, the use of plants to clean up contaminated soils (Baker et al., 1994; Salt et al., 1995; Chaney et al., 1997, 2000). These applications have in turn spurred many studies of the genetics and physiology of metal uptake (e.g. Krämer et al., 1996; Lasat et al., 1996; Salt & Krämer, 1999; Baker et al., 2000; see also Krämer, 2000; Lombi et al., 2000). Although phytoremediation provides an intriguing and potentially profitable backdrop, the ecology and evolution of hyperaccumulation in natural populations are interesting subjects in their own right. Two papers in this issue (Ghaderian et al., pp. 219–224; Davis & Boyd, pp. 211–217) are exciting contributions to the growing consensus that hyperaccumulation may act as a defense against herbivores and pathogens, and suggest that hyperaccumulation may become a model system for research in this area.

Effects of ozone on spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Satu) were studied in an open-top chamber experiment during two growing seasons (1992–1993) at Jokioinen in south-west Finland. The wheat was exposed to filtered air (CF), non-filtered air (NF), non-filtered air+35 nl l−1 ozone for 8 h d−1 (NF+) and ambient air (AA). Each treatment was replicated five times. Two wk after anthesis, after 4 wk of ozone treatment (NF+, 45 nl l−1 1000–1800 hours, seasonal mean) the net CO2 uptake of wheat flag leaves was decreased by c. 40% relative to CF and NF treatments, both initial and total activity of Rubisco and the quantity of protein-bound SH groups were decreased significantly. Added ozone also significantly accelerated flag leaf senescence recorded as a decrease in chloroplast size. The effect was significant 2 wk after anthesis, and senescence was complete after 4 wk. In the CF and NF treatments senescence was complete 5 wk after anthesis. The significant effect of ozone on the chloroplasts and net CO2 uptake 2 wk after anthesis did not affect the grain filling rate. However, since the grain filling period was shorter for ozone fumigated plants, kernels were smaller. The decrease in 1000-grain weight explained most of the yield reduction in the plants under NF+ treatment. The results indicate that wheat plants are well buffered against substantial decrease in source activity, and that shortened flag leaf duration is the major factor causing ozone-induced yield loss.

Amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) offer a reproducible, multiplex DNA assay by which to genotype mapping populations. We have evaluated physiological traits in barley seedlings grown in an hydroponic system and given a salt treatment. Multiple regression was used to show associations between AFLPs and quantitative traits. Effects at different loci were detected in stress treatments in comparison to the control implying that either novel gene action was induced by salt stress or that normal activity was reduced to a low level where alternate gene action is revealed. The QTLs occurred on all chromosomes but there appeared to be clusters of loci on chromosomes 1 (7H), 4 (4H), 5 (1H) and 6 (6H). The significance of our results is discussed in the context of studies to explore the barley genome and the application of the results of these genetical analyses to barley breeding.

Isozyme expression of nutrient-mobilizing and defence-related enzymes were examined in different functional components of intact Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) ectomycorrhizal root systems developed in natural unsterilized forest humus. Scots pine seedlings colonized by Suillus bovinus (L. ex Fr.) O. Kuntze or Paxillus involutus (Batsch ex Fr.) strains were grown on humus in two-dimensional Perspex[target] microcosms to allow development of complete ectomycorrhizal root systems. Soluble proteins from uncolonized short roots, whole mycorrhizal root tips or dissected mantle and core fractions, fungal strands and the outermost soil colonizing fine hyphae were subjected to native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and stained to detect esterase, acid phosphatase, peroxidase and different polyphenoloxidase isozyme activities. Tissue-specific esterase isozymes were detected in all components and most, including unique Hartig net isozymes, were of fungal origin. High fungal acid phosphatase activities were detected in mycorrhiza and fine hyphae of S. bovinus, supporting earlier findings of active phosphatase activity at the fungal interface in the Hartig net region and in the fine hyphal margins of extramatrical mycelium actively colonizing the humus. All compartments in the P. involutus mycorrhizosphere had weaker acid-phosphatase activities. Peroxidases formed a large part of the soluble-protein content in non-mycorrhizal short roots. The amount of peroxidases, on a tissue f. wt basis, was similar in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal roots, but differential isozyme expression was detected, indicating a change in root peroxidase activities following mycorrhiza formation. The expression of DL-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine metabolizing polyphenol oxidase enzymes was reduced in mycorrhizas compared with non-mycorrhizal short roots. In the extramatrical mycelial components, fine hyphae expressed the highest polyphenoloxidase activity. P. involutus displayed some polyphenol-oxidizing isoenzymes not detected in S. bovinus systems. Laccase activity was not detected in the plant and fungal components examined. It is concluded that enzyme activities and isozyme expression are differentially regulated in the different functional components of Scots pine mycorrhizospheres.

The ability of 16 calcareous grassland species to establish in competition with adult neighbours of two different growth forms was assessed in a glasshouse experiment. The questions asked were: (1) how well is establishment ability related to plant traits such as seed mass, DNA content, relative growth rate and adult height; and (2) are the results consistent across different neighbours? Two measures of establishment ability were calculated, survival relative yield and biomass relative yield, for seedlings grown with a dicot. (Leontodon hispidus) and with a graminoid (Festuca ovina). The results depended on which measure of establishment ability was used. When establishment ability was measured in terms of biomass relative yield, seed mass was a good predictive trait, accounting for 38–55% of variation. However, when establishment ability was measured as survival relative yield, adult height was found to be the best predictor, capable of accounting for 20% of variation, although this was not consistent across neighbours. Thus, no clear relationship between plant traits and establishment ability was found: results depended on the measure of establishment ability used, and in the case of adult height, on the identity of the neighbour species. Survival relative yield was strongly associated with target and neighbour species growth form type, with stronger suppression of like than of non-like growth forms. The lack of strong relationships between plant traits and establishment ability, and the dependence on neighbour identity, suggests that the links between plant traits and establishment might be context-dependent; thus an understanding of the mechanisms underlying any such links is essential.

The ultramafic sites at Meikle Kilrannoch, Scotland, have small sparsely colonized patches with soils which have highly toxic (to many non-indigenous plants) concentrations of Mg and Ni. These toxic metals are unlikely to be the main cause of the open vegetation as the indigenous plants are at least partially tolerant of them. The hypothesis that low soil nutrients were a likely cause of the open vegetation was tested by a fertilization experiment in which major nutrients and Ca were added in August 1991 and July 1992 to replicated quadrats which initially had 5·3–6·6% plant cover. There was a large increase in plant cover on major nutrient addition. The increase in rosette size, flowering, seed production, and recruitment of the dominant semelparous Cochlearia pyrenaica DC. ssp. alpina (Bab.) Dalby was studied in detail. The increased growth of Cochlearia (and some other native species at the site) on nutrient addition strengthens the argument that a major nutrient deficiency rather than a metal toxicity limits plant growth at Meikle Kilrannoch and shows that at least some stress tolerators respond with rapid growth and reproduction when nutrient limitation is removed. A small-scale experiment set up in June 1993, in which the major nutrients were added separately, suggested that P and not N, or K was the limiting element. The effects of P seem to be unrelated to any possible reduction in the availability of the toxic ions Mg 2+ and Ni2+.

Field-grown trees of Alnus incana (L.) Moench, Alnus glutinosa (L.) Geartner and Betula pendula Roth displayed pronounced differences in responses of light-saturated net photosynthesis (Asat) to herbivory by the alder beetle (Agelastica alni L., Galerucinae), a specialized insect which primarily defoliates alders. We found that photosynthetic rates of grazed leaves increased following herbivory in Alnus but not in Betula. Area- and mass-based Asat of grazed leaves declined linearly with increasing amount of leaf perforation in B. pendula, by as much as 57%. By contrast Alnus glutinosa and Alnus incana increased area-based rates of Asat by 10–50% at all levels of leaf grazing. Given increased Asat in the remaining portion of grazed leaves, a net reduction in photosynthesis per leaf occurred only when the proportion of leaf area grazed exceeded 40% for Alnus incana and 23% for Alnus glutinosa. Since vein perforation by Agelastica alni was observed much more frequently in leaves of Betula than in Alnus, we hypothesized that declining Asat in herbivorized Betula was related to this disruption of water transport. A field experiment with artificial leaf perforation demonstrated a greater decline in Asat in vein-perforated Betula leaves than perforated leaves with midrib veins intact. However, regardless of leaf perforation regime, birch never showed post-perforation increases in Asat. In all species, rates of transpiration of grazed leaves linearly increased and water-use efficiency decreased with increased amount of leaf perforation. In grazed Alnus incana leaves, increasing leaf area consumption by Agelastica alni resulted in an increase of total phenols, a reduction in starch content and no changes in nitrogen concentration in the remaining portion. The increase in photosynthesis in Alnus incana might be related to declining leaf starch concentration or increasing stomatal conductance, but was unrelated to leaf nitrogen concentration. These gas exchange and leaf chemistry measurements suggest that in contrast to B. pendula, Alnus incana and Alnus glutinosa, which are the major host species for Agelastica alni, possess leaf-level physiological adaptations and defence mechanisms which can attenuate negative effects of herbivory by the alder leaf-beetle.

We have explored the relationships between specific leaf area calculated for a whole plant and its individual leaves. Barley was grown in hydroponics in controlled environment cabinets. Plants were harvested on the basis of physiological age (defined as the number of days after full expansion of leaves on the main stem) and the area and weight of whole, fully expanded, leaves measured and specific leaf area (SLA) of individual leaves or whole plants calculated. Specific leaf area calculated for individual leaves (SLAL) varied with leaf position and with leaf age after full expansion whereas SLA calculated for whole plants (SLAP) varied with plant age. The same conclusions were reached whether the results were based on total dry weight or dry weight minus soluble carbohydrates (‘structural weight’). Transferring plants to shade on the day of full expansion of the third leaf on the main stem increased the SLAP, and also SLAL of leaves 3 and 4 on the main stem (leaf 4 being the younger leaf of the two), because of a decrease in the ‘structural weight’ of these leaves. However SLAL of leaf 2 (which was older than leaf 3) was not affected by shading; the effect was confined to leaves developing in the new conditions.

The facultative hemiparasite Rhinanthus minor was grown alone, or with either Hordeum vulgare or Trifolium alpestre as a host. All plants were fed 5 mM nitrate. In the parasites, successful attachment led to dramatic increases in growth (particularly with barley as host) and in tissue concentrations of total N, NO3−, H2PO4− and K+, as well as moderate increases in Cl− and SO42−. Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations either remained unchanged, increased or decreased, depending on the host. Xylem sap was collected from leaf veins (barley) or the stem (Rhinanthus and clover), by applying pneumatic pressure to the rooted soil to raise the soil water potential so that in vivo xylem sap exuded from small incisions once the applied pressure balanced the tension exerted by transpiration. High balancing pressures were needed for unattached Rhinanthus, whereas simultaneous collection of xylem sap from attached Rhinanthus and its host, at a much lower balancing pressure, was possible only when the parasite was enclosed in polyethylene film and high transpiration abolished. From plots of xylem sap volume flow versus applied pressure, the hydraulic conductivity Lp and the overall hydraulic resistance r were obtained. The value of r was high in unattached Rhinanthus and dramatically decreased by attachment to a host, highlighting the improved access to water gained by Rhinanthus when parasitizing a host. For the parasites, attachment resulted in greatly increased concentrations and solute flow rates in xylem of K+, NO3−, H2PO4− and amino acids, and decreased concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+. Estimates of NO3− reduction in the parasite showed that 99% was reduced in unattached plants, 85% in those attached to clover and 52% in those attached to barley. In the parasitized hosts, ion concentrations in xylem sap were somewhat increased relative to unparasitized controls. Conversely, xylem sap amino-acid concentrations in infected hosts were decreased. Glutamine (Gln) was the principal amino acid in xylem sap of unattached Rhinanthus, but after attachment to both hosts asparagine (Asn) predominated. In clover, Asn was the major transport amino acid, suggesting massive transfer of Asn from host to parasite. In unparasitized barley, however, Gln was the major xylem sap amino acid, but unexpectedly, in this species Asn was induced as the principal amino acid when parasitized. The results are discussed in terms of mutual host–parasite interactions.

We investigated the effect of soil compaction and phosphorus (P) application on morphological characteristics of mycorrhizal colonization and growth responses, to determine the reasons for reduced responses observed in our previous work with compacted soil. Growth, phosphorus (P) uptake and intensity of vesicular–arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal colonization were studied in clover plants (Trifolium subterraneum L.) with and without VA mycorrhizal colonization at two P applications and three levels of soil compaction. Phosphorus was supplied either at constant mass concentration (mg P kg−1 soil) or at constant volume concentration (mg P dm−3 soil). Increasing bulk density of the soil from 1·1 to 1·6 Mg m−3 significantly decreased root length and shoot d. wt, but increased the diameter of both main axes and first order lateral roots regardless of P application. Total P uptake and shoot d. wt of clover plants colonized by Glomus intraradices (Schenck & Smith) were significantly greater than those of non-mycorrhizal plants at all levels of soil compaction and both P applications. However, soil compaction to a bulk density of 1·6 Mg m−3 (penetrometer resistance = 3·5 MPa at a matric potential of −33 kPa) significantly decreased mycorrhizal growth response. There was no evidence that the increased volume concentration of P at high bulk densities was responsible for the reduced responses. Soil compaction had no significant effect on the fraction of root length containing arbuscules and vesicles, but total root length colonized by arbuscules, vesicles or by any combination of arbuscules, vesicles and intra-radical hyphae significantly decreased as soil compaction was increased. The air-filled porosity of highly compacted soil, which varied from 0·07 to 0·11 over the range of matric potentials encountered (−33 and −100 kPa), had no significant effect on the intensity of internal colonization.

We tested the extent to which growth responses to elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) are temperature-dependent and change through early seedling ontogeny among boreal tree species of contrasting relative growth rates (rgr). Populus tremuloides Michx, Betula papyrifera Marsh, Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch, Pinus banksiana Lamb., and Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P. were grown from seeds for 3 months in controlled-environment chambers at two CO2 concentrations (370 and 580 μmol mol−1) and five temperature regimes of 18/12, 21/15, 24/18, 27/21 and 30/24°C (light/dark). Growth increases in response to CO2 enrichment were minimal at the lowest temperature and maximal at 21/15°C for the three conifers and at 24/18°C or higher for the two broadleaved species, corresponding with differences in optimal temperatures for growth. In both CO2 treatments, rgr among species and temperatures correlated positively with leaf area ratio (lar) (r[ges ]0·90, P<0·0001). However, at a given lar, rgr was higher in elevated CO2, owing to enhanced whole-plant net assimilation rate. On average in all species and temperatures at a common plant mass, CO2 enrichment increased rgr (9%) through higher whole-plant net assimilation rate (22%), despite declines in lar in high CO2 (11%). Reductions in lar are thus an important feedback mechanism reducing positive plant growth responses to CO2. Proportional allocation of dry mass to roots did not vary between CO2 treatments. Early in the experiment, proportional increases in plant dry mass in elevated CO2 were larger in faster-growing Populus tremuloides and B. papyrifera than in the slower-growing conifers. However, growth increases in response to CO2 enrichment fell with time for broadleaved species and increased for the conifers. With increasing plant size over time, compensatory adjustments to CO2 enrichment in the factors that determine rgr, such as lar, were much larger in broadleaves than in conifers. Thus, the hypothesis that faster-growing species are more responsive to elevated CO2 was not supported, given contrasting patterns of growth response to CO2 with increasing plant size and age.

The effects of u.v.-B radiation (280–315 nm) on the fungi occurring on the lammas leaves of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) were examined using saplings that were exposed at an outdoor facility to supplemental levels of u.v.-B radiation under treatment arrays of cellulose diacetate-filtered fluorescent lamps, which also produce u.v.-A radiation (315–400 nm). Saplings were also exposed to u.v.-A radiation alone under control arrays of polyester-filtered lamps, and to ambient levels of solar radiation under arrays of unenergized lamps. The u.v.-B treatment corresponded to a 30% elevation above the ambient level of erythemally-weighted u.v.-B radiation. The fungi were examined weekly over a 4-month-period in summer and autumn 1995 using two techniques, the spore fall and leaf impression methods, which differentiated between those fungi occurring on the upper (adaxial) and lower (abaxial) surfaces of the leaves. The abundances of Aureobasidium pullulans (De Bary) Arnaud and Sporobolomyces roseus Kluy. et van Niel, two leaf yeasts which had adaxial[ratio ]abaxial ratios of <1 under ambient levels of u.v.-B radiation, were negatively correlated with increasing ambient levels of u.v.-B radiation and were significantly reduced on adaxial leaf surfaces by supplemental levels of u.v.-B. There were few effects of supplemental u.v.-B radiation on the abundances of these yeasts on abaxial leaf surfaces. The abundances of the dematiaceous hyphomycetes, Cladosporium spp. and Epicoccum nigrum Link., species with adaxial[ratio ]abaxial ratios of [ges ]1 under ambient levels of u.v.-B radiation, were not correlated with ambient levels of u.v.-B radiation, nor were they usually affected on either leaf surface by supplemental u.v.-B radiation. Alternaria spp. and Microdochium nivale (Fr.) Samuels & Hallet showed consistent responses on adaxial leaf surfaces to u.v.-A radiation applied under control and treatment arrays. Our results suggest that current levels of shortwave radiation already influence the distribution of fungi on leaf surfaces and that future increases in u.v.-B radiation will directly affect the abundances of specific phylloplane fungi.
