The genus Lecanactis, with 24 species, has been phylogenetically analysed using cladistic parsimony methods and support tests. Morphological, anatomical and chemical data were used, comprising 38 characters. Twelve equally most parsimonious trees were obtained. The successive approximations character weighting method gave one most parsimonious tree. The ingroup, Lecanactis, is supported as monophyletic. Although parsimony jackknifing and Bremer support indicate that the trees are poorly supported, some groups are wholly or partly distinguished in both the strict consensus tree, the successive weighting tree and the Jac tree.

The health, abundance, metal content and species richness of corticolous macrolichens and bryophytes of Quercus ilex were compared at nine roadside stations in Montseny Biosphere Reserve, 40 km NNE of Barcelona, and at a control site outside the industrial metropolis. Stations were characterized by traffic levels and the correlated parameter airborne particles. Corticolous flora at all stations was dominated by sorediate Parmelia species (P. caperata, P. soredians, P. subrudecta, P. subaurifera, P. sulcata and P. perlata). Damage, mainly due to arthropod feeding and fungal parasites, ranged from 14 to 33% of mean cover per station in the park and was 10% at the control site. Elevated levels of Pb, Zn and Cu were found in large thalli near the roadsides.

Notes are provided on the genus Vezdaea and its five species represented in the British Isles, including V. acicularis sp. nov. A key to the six European species is included.

Soft unprotected sea cliffs and slopes were surveyed at forty localities around the English coast and found to support a restricted lichen flora that was zoned in relation to sea-level. Bed rock composition, structural heterogeneity and high levels of instability largely control the terricolous lichen vegetation, which is predominantly composed of calcicoles typical of early successional stages. Cyanobacterial lichens are well represented. The species encountered can be arranged into three provisional assemblages characteristic of alkaline bed rock, acidic bed rock, and turf edges. Few species with maritime affinities were present but this group included rarely recorded species of Pyrenocollema and abundant Lecanora zosterae. Other rare and unusual lichens were present, often at a low density and in only a few localities. The lichen flora of soft cliffs has links with that found on urban wasteland and, remotely, with that of sand dunes.

The genus Alysphaeria Turpin is typified; it belongs to Chrysothrix Mont. nom. cons. Five old unused names are added to the synonymy of Chrysothrix candelaris (L.) J. R. Laundon. Lepraria atrotomentosa Orange & Wolseley is a synonym of L. cupressicola (Hue) J. R. Laundon, a new combination. Lepraria nigrocincta Diederich et al. is identical with the earlier L. yunnaniana (Hue) Zahlbr. and therefore also goes into synonymy.

Corticolous lichens in the central mountains of Sri Lanka differ with vegetation type, disturbance and climate. All growth forms of lichens were studied in 42 plots (six plots × seven vegetation types), yielding 124 species. Lichen species diversity varied with number of tree species per plot (correlations) and differed with disturbance group, vegetation type and climate zone (general linear models). Lichen community composition (estimated cover of 74 species each at ≥ 3 plots) varied along two ordination gradients secondarily correlated with disturbance (nonmetric multidimensional scaling, NMS). Undisturbed and disturbed plots (mostly grouped by vegetation type) were divided along NMS axis 1, correlating with distance to undisturbed forest. Longest-disturbed plots differed from all others along NMS axis 2 and were correlated with canopy cover. Climate was weakly reflected on the ordination as the proximity of two plot clusters in montane vegetation types. Indicator species analyses (ISA) of lichen cover by plot identified 60 strong indicator species (indicator value ≥ 50%, P < 0.015). Fifty-seven species were indicators for individual vegetation types (28 of them for undisturbed types); three were for a disturbance group only; 11 were also for a disturbance group or climate zone. Most species strongly driving ordination patterns were also ISA indicators. Most lichens were crustose (39, with 24 in the Graphidaceae). Each vegetation type had at least one indicator with trentepohliod algae (increasing for undisturbed plots) and one with chlorococcoid algae. Two visually distinct indicator species, three genera and two multi-genus groups will be useful to parataxonomists in forest evaluation.

Species conservation depends on accurate data, but for many lichens existing collections are geographically biased and contain many taxonomic errors. It is unclear whether ‘non-expert’, systematic monitoring schemes can address these sources of error, particularly for taxonomically challenging lichens (e.g. species requiring chemistry for accurate identification). In this case study we use the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI), a large-scale, systematic, multi-taxon monitoring programme, to better understand the ecology and distribution of a putative rare species, Cladonia rei. Collections of C. rei from Alberta dating from 1947 suggested the species was broadly distributed but rare, with seven accessioned specimens. We used comparative morphology, thin-layer chromatography and habitat modelling to compare historical records against more recent material from ABMI surveys. Contrary to the historical collections, ABMI samples suggest C. rei is almost entirely limited to the dry mixed grassland, northern fescue grassland and aspen parkland natural regions, and that within these ecosystems it is relatively common. The typical ecotype exhibited included a persistent primary thallus, podetia with a persistent basal cortex, and secondary squamules; typically they lacked cups, well-developed apothecia and fumarprotocetraric acid, and ramifications were sparse. Cladonia rei was consistently found in pastures and undisturbed grasslands that hosted relatively rich communities of epigeic lichens, thus it does not appear to act as a pioneer in Alberta or to commonly occupy the anthropogenic niches documented elsewhere. In summary, large-scale, systematic, non-targeted monitoring employing novices redressed issues of sample bias through almost 300 C. rei collections, simultaneously improving the ecological understanding of a putative rare species.

Acarospora rosulata is revised and reported from North America and Mongolia. Acarospora bullata is not verified as occurring in South and North America and may be conspecific with A. rugulosa.

Ten new species of Trypetheliaceae are described: Astrothelium bullatothallinum from Venezuela, which is close to A. aeneum but differs by the bullate thallus with a thick cortex, intermixed in a mosaic with the prothallus; A. cayennense from French Guiana, which is similar to A. flavomegaspermum but with a yellow pigment in the pseudostroma near the ostioles; A. diaphanocorticatum from Papua New Guinea, which has a bullate thallus with a thick hyaline cortex and 3-septate ascospores of 25–28×10–12 μm; A. macroeustomum from French Guiana, with joint lateral ostioles, UV+ yellow ostiolar region and 5-septate ascospores of 50–55×12–17 μm; A. minicecidiogenum from Costa Rica, with muriform ascospores of 70–90×20–25 μm, without pseudostromata, with solitary ascomata, lateral ostioles and an inspersed hamathecium; A. palaeoexostemmatis from Thailand, which is similar to A. exostemmatis but with larger, I+ blue ascospores; A. quasimamillanum from Brazil, with muriform ascospores of 30–33×9·5–10·5 μm, without pseudostromata, with solitary ascomata, lateral ostioles and an inspersed hamathecium; A. studerae from Brazil, with astrothelioid ascomata, lichexanthone only in the pseudostromata, 3-septate ascospores of 21·5–23·0×6·5–7·5 μm; A. tanianum from Malaysia, with a bullate thallus, solitary ascomata, covered by the thallus, (9–)11(–15)-septate ascospores, 75–100×20–22 μm; and Pseudopyrenula miniflavida from Brazil, with a yellow-inspersed hamathecium, the inspersion dissolving in KOH without colour change, and 3-septate ascospores, 15–17×5·5–6·5 μm. The unusually thick, hyaline cortical layer of the thallus of Astrothelium diaphanocorticatum, through which the individual algal cells are clearly visible, is discussed. Furthermore, 30 species are reported from 34 countries in which they had previously been unrecorded; one (Astrothelium inspersaeneum) is from a new continent, Asia.

Chapsa rubropruinosa Messuti & Codesal collected in Argentina is described as new to science. The species is characterized by a thin thallus, apothecia with a pigmented disc, and transversely septate, hyaline, non-amyloid to faintly amyloid ascospores with thin cell walls. Chapsa minor is recorded for the first time from South America. The new combination Topeliopsis lomatiae (Messuti, Lumbsch & Vězda) Messuti & Mangold is proposed.

The taxonomic and nomenclatural status of the common Scutula (Ramalinaceae, Lecanorales, Ascomycota) parasitizing species of Solorina (Peltigeraceae, Lecanorales) is clarified. The type of Biatorina tuberculosa Th. Fr., which, according to the protologue, was described from a Peltigera, is actually growing on Solorina saccata, and the correct name for this species is here shown to be Scutula tuberculosa (Th. Fr.) Rehm. Lectotypes are designated for Lecidea solorinaria Nyl., Scutula krempelhuberi Körb. and Lecidea solorinicola Vain. Notes on the taxonomy and classification of the genus are given, and a key to the species of Scutula s. str. in the Northern Hemisphere is presented. Scutula tuberculosa is reported as new to Asia and North America.

Buellia peregrina is described as new to science from small limestone pebbles on exposed ground of the coastal Namib Desert, Namibia. The species is unusual for two reasons: (1) it is the only species in Buellia s.l. currently known to grow euendolithically, i.e., establishing a thallus entirely within its rock substratum, and (2) its apothecia contain a previously unknown blue pigment, here described as peregrina-blue according to its colour and characteristic reactions with HNO3, KOH and HCl.

The genus Jarmania, based on the single species J. tristis, is described. The new genus is characterized by a byssoid-leprose thallus, immarginate apothecia, asci of the Bacidia-type, strongly anastomosing paraphyses and septate, acicular ascospores. The new species is corticolous and is known only from cool temperate rainforest in Tasmania.

The response of corticolous lichens to artificially induced chemical damage was compared to symptoms found on damaged lichens in the field. Experimental thalli were damaged and observed (1) in situ in a relatively pristine area, and (2) in a growth chamber either hydrated continuously or periodically. Lichenicolous fungi encountered included Cornutispora lichenicola, Lichenoconium erodens, Phoma cytospora, Vouauxiomyces truncatus, Hobsonia christiansenii, Pronectria oligospora, Nectria rubefaciens and its anamorph, Acremonium rhabdosporum, and a variety of hyphomycetes. The results support the idea that both thallus necrosis and moist conditions are necessary to produce the full suite of symptoms observed on ailing lichens in the field.

Fifteen species of Usnea are recorded from Iberian cork-oak forests: U. ceratina, U. comma, U. dasaea, U. esperantiana, U. flammea, U. fulvoreagens, U. glabrata, U. hirta, U. mutabilis, U. rubicunda, U. subcornuta, U. subfloridana U. subscabrosa, U. substerilis and U. wasmuthii. A key for these species is provided. Details of morphology, chemistry, distribution, ecology and taxonomy are discussed. Usnea dasaea is reported as new to the Iberian Peninsula. New chemotypes of U. fulvoreagens (with squamatic acid) and U. wasmuthii (with psoromic acid) have been identified. Distribution maps of U. dasaeaand U. subcornuta in Europe are presented. A new combination, Usnea subfloridana subsp. praetervisa (Asahina) P. Clerc, is proposed.
