This brief communication discusses theoretically a resistive ion-dust streaming instability in a collisional dusty plasma, where the ions and electrons are magnetized, and the dust is unmagnetized. The instability is driven by ions streaming along the magnetic field. The emphasis is on the case where the dust has large thermal speed, and where the ion drift speed is ≲ the ion thermal speed. Application to possible laboratory experimental parameters is considered.

Magnetic reconnection in three dimensions (3D) is a natural extension from X-point reconnection in two dimensions. Of central importance in the 3D process is a localized non-ideal region within which the plasma and magnetic field decouple allowing for field line connectivity change. In practice, localized current structures provide this localization; however, mathematically a similar effect can be achieved with the localization of plasma resistivity instead. Physically though, such approaches are unrealistic, as anomalous resistivity requires very localized currents. Therefore, we wish to know how much information is lost in localizing η instead of current? In this work we develop kinematic models for torsional spine and fan reconnection using both localized η and localized current and compare the non-ideal flows predicted by each. We find that the flow characteristics are dictated almost exclusively by the form taken for the current profile with η acting only to scale the flow. We do, however, note that the reconnection mechanism is the same in each case. Therefore, from an understanding point of view, localized η models are still important first steps into exploring the role of non-ideal effects.

The toroidal precession of circulating particles in tokamaks is studied numerically. The dependence of the precession frequency on the magnetic shear, the elongation of the plasma cross-section, and plasma pressure is investigated. It is concluded that the analytical expressions for the precession frequency by Kolesnichenko et al. (2003 Phys. Plasmas10, 1449–1457) represent a reasonable approximation for the limit cases of tokamaks with circular cross-section and shearless tokamaks with elliptical cross-section. The precession frequency was calculated for non-circular tokamaks with magnetic shear. Based on the numerical results, an interpolation formula for the precession frequency is proposed.

A suitable modification on the plasma production device makes the plasma column length changeable; the axially propagating wave strikes on the movable circular base of the cavity and the reflected wave is affected enough. A tightening on the azimouthally propagating wave makes the amplitude measurements precarious, and the previous experimental results for fixed cavity length are valid. A strong boundaries' influence on the instability's reinforcement makes clear the need to extend even more the thermonuclear reactor's dimensions. In the present paper, an extended research of plasma parameters has been carried out, a corresponding theoretical model is developed to explain the phenomena and the comparison to the simulated results has been confirmed.

In this paper, we study the weakly-compressive high-frequency plasma waves which are superposed on a large-amplitude Alfvén wave in a multi-fluid plasma consisting of protons, electrons, and alpha particles. For these waves, the plasma environment is inhomogenous due to the presence of the low-frequency Alfvén wave with a large amplitude, a situation that may apply to space plasmas such as the solar corona and solar wind. The dispersion relation of the plasma waves is determined from a linear stability analysis using a new eigenvalue method that is employed to solve the set of differential wave equations which describe the propagation of plasma waves along the direction of the constant component of the Alfvén wave magnetic field. This approach also allows one to consider weak compressive effects. In the presence of the background Alfvén wave, the dispersion branches obtained differ significantly from the situation of a uniform plasma. Due to compressibility, acoustic waves are excited and couplings between various modes occur, and even an instability of the compressive mode. In a kinetic treatment, these plasma waves would be natural candidates for Landau-resonant wave–particle interactions, and may thus via their damping lead to particle heating.

It is shown that the direction of the drag force imposed on non-spherical grain by plasma flow is not necessarily aligned with the flow velocity. The implications of this fact for a grain dynamics are discussed.

The effect of radial boundaries on the ion-dust streaming instability is investigated. Possible applications of our work to certain low-temperature dusty plasma experiments are discussed.

Space-charge waves in a relativistic electron beam that completely fills a cylindrical metallic waveguide and is guided by an ion channel are analyzed numerically. Equilibrium consists of a uniform and rigid rotation without betatron oscillations. Using cold fluid equations a differential equation and boundary conditions are derived that constitute an eigenvalue problem. This eigenvalue problem is solved, numerically, with the finite difference scheme using shooting method. Dispersion characteristics and electrostatic potential structures of azimuthally symmetric and nonsymmetric space-charge waves are studied. Perfect agreement with analytical results at asymptotic limit of zero axial velocity is found. It was found that relativistic effects modify the dispersion characteristics of the space-charge waves considerably and can concentrate the electric field energy of the wave into a thin and small shell around the axis.

A particle-in-cell numerical simulation of the electron Weibel instability is applied in a frame of Darwin (radiationless) approximation of the self-consistent fields of sparse plasma. As a result, we were able to supplement the classical picture of the instability and, in particular, to obtain the dependency of the basic characteristics (the time of development and the maximum field energy) of the thermal anisotropy parameter, to trace the dynamic restructuring of current filaments accompanying the non-linear stage of the instability and to trace in detail the evolution of the initial anisotropy of the electron component of plasma.
