The basal part of the Upper Cretaceous, mid-Campanian to Maastrichtian Izumi Group of the Izumi Mountains and Awaji Island, Southwest Japan, contains the most diverse gastropod fauna of this age in Japan. This paper discriminates 19 species and describes two new genera: Atira tricarinata n. sp., Ataphrus (s.s.) sp. A, Ataphrus (s.s.) sp. B, Globularia (s.s.) izumiensis n. sp., Lysis izumiensis n. sp., Trichotropis? sp., Deussenia takinoikensis n. sp., Volutilithes antiqua n. sp., Pseudoperissitys bicarinata Nagao and Otatume, Nekewis sp., Nipponitys inouei n. gen. and sp., Nipponitys acutangularis n. gen. and sp., Nipponitys sp. cf. N. magna (Kalishevitsch), Calorebama cretacea n. sp., Taniella japonica n. gen. and sp., Amuletum (s.s.) sp., Biplica osakensis n. sp., Biplica sphaerica n. sp., and Cylichna sp. The family Ampullospiridae is assigned to the suborder Architaenioglossa from the superfamily Naticacea. The enigmatic genus Lysis is tentatively assigned to the Calyptraeidae. Taniella japonica n. sp. is the oldest member of the family Olividae, and Calorebama cretacea n. sp. is the oldest member of the subfamily Pseudolivinae. Occurrence of Atira, Ataphrus, Biplica, and five perissityids further supports close communication of the northwestern Pacific Late Cretaceous gastropod faunas with those of the North American Pacific coastal areas.

A new penaeoid shrimp collected from the Middle Triassic Member II of the Guanling Formation in the vicinity of the city of Luxi, Yunnan, southwest China, is a new species, Aeger luxii n. sp. The new species possesses prominent spinose third maxillipeds, which is one of the typical characteristics of Aeger. The new species differs from the type species, Aeger tipularius from the Jurassic Solnhofen Plattenkalk, in having a long, smooth rostrum with no subrostral spines. The new taxon increases the diversity of Chinese decapods, and further expands our knowledge of the phylogeny and evolution of the Mesozoic decapods. The find is the first complete specimen of Aeger in the Middle Triassic, and reveals a close biogeographic connection of the marine ecosystem between Eastern and Western Tethys.

Fossil Scydmaeninae beetles are exceptionally poorly known and those described usually lack important details to reliably analyze their phylogenetic relationships with extant taxa. Baltostigus n. gen. is the first extinct ant-like stone beetle taxon unambiguously assigned to the tribe Mastigini. It includes B. antennatus n. sp. (the type species of Baltostigus) and B. horribilis n. sp., from the lower to middle Eocene amber of Poland and Lithuania, respectively. Results of a phylogenetic analysis comprising morphological characters of all extant and extinct genera of the supertribe Mastigitae strongly support the placement of Baltostigus as a sister group to all remaining Mastigini. The new genus shows character states not known in any extant Mastigini: fully developed hind wings, prominent humeral calli, deep elytral punctures partly arranged in longitudinal rows and symmetrical aedeagal parameres. These features suggest that Mastigini might have evolved from forms morphologically similar to small-bodied extant Clidicini of the ‘Leptochromus lineage.’

Protosalvinia first occur in association with conodonts of the Upper trachytera Zone and below the Three Lick Bed in the Ohio Shale and the Ellicott Shale of the central and northern Appalachian Basin, as well as in the Clegg Creek Member of the New Albany Shale of the Illinois Basin. In the Chattanooga Shale of the southern Appalachian Basin, Protosalvinia are found no lower than the Upper marginifera Zone or associated with obviously reworked conodonts in the Middle expansa Zone. Regionally Protosalvinia are associated with a disconformity and may be found with conodonts of the Lower expansa Zone.

Ostracodes are described from the “Cerro del Fuerte Section” and neighboring localities, all in the Precordillera de San Juan (northern Argentina, San Juan Province), and from sparse faunas in Bolivia (Chuquisaca, Tarabuco Province). Additional material comes from the collection of Thomas (1905). This preliminary study gives the first detailed description of ostracode assemblages in the Upper Silurian and Lower Devonian of the South American continent. Records of other abundant lower Paleozoic (Lower Ordovician to Lower Devonian) ostracodes in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, and Venezuela are also reviewed. Twelve different species, belonging to Palaeocopa (Beyrichiacea and Primitiopsacea) and to Binodicopa and Podocopa (Healdiacea, Thlip-suracea, Cypridacea) are described and a new genus is established (Australobollia n. gen.). Ostracode distribution at Cerro del Fuerte attests to the presence of the Siluro-Devonian boundary within the upper Los Espejos Formation and confirms recent stratigraphical attributions mainly based on conodonts and brachiopods (Benedetto et al., 1992). The beyrichiacean Hemsiella indicates a late Ludlow to Pridolian age for the lower part of upper Los Espejos Formation. The non-palaeocope “Thlipsurella-Phanasymmetria-Ranapeltis” assemblage found in the uppermost part of the formation indicates an Early Devonian (Lochkovian) age. The present study reveals the existence of faunal links at genus (Silurian) and probably species (Early Devonian) level between South America (Argentina, Bolivia), Laurentia, Avalonia-Baltica, and northern Gondwana. For example, close affinities (e.g., Ranapeltis sp. aff. rowlandi and Thlipsurella sp. aff. ellipsoclefta) exist between the uppermost Los Espejos Formation (Argentina) and contemporaneous horizons in the North American Mid-Continent (e.g., Haragan Formation, Oklahoma; Shriver Formation, Pennsylvania). Two types of ostracode assemblages, “beyrichiacean-dominated” and “thlipsuracean-bairdiacean-cypridacean dominated,” are recognized in the Late Silurian–Early Devonian of Argentina and discussed relative to other assemblages known in Laurentia, Avalonia-Baltica, and northern Gondwana. Their paleoecological significance in relation to marine bathymetry is addressed.

This newly described chondrichthyan fauna from the late Miocene Chucunaque Formation of Lago Bayano reveals a prolific and highly diverse assemblage from Panama, and one of the richest shark faunas from the Neotropics. Strontium geochronology indicates an age of 10–9.5 Ma for the chonrichthyan-bearing strata. Field efforts resulted in 1429 identifiable specimens comprising at least 31 taxa, of which at least eight are new to the documented fossil record of Panama. With this information an analysis of functional diversity was conducted, indicating ecosystems dominated by generalist species feeding upon a wide range of organisms, from plankton to marine mammals. A probabilistic approach of paleobathymetric estimation suggests a neritic environment. Previous studies based on foraminifera have suggested that the Chucunaque Formation had a greater Pacific Ocean affinity, making this the first Miocene chondrichthyan fauna described from the Pacific shelf of Panama. However, our geographic comparisons show that this fauna has mixed Caribbean and Pacific biogeographic affinities, which likely supports the previously purported connection between chondrichthyan faunas during the late Miocene.

‘Virtual paleontology’ entails the use of computational methods to assist in the three-dimensional (3-D) visualization and analysis of fossils, and has emerged as a powerful approach for research on the history of life. Three-dimensional imaging techniques allow poorly understood or previously unknown anatomies of fossil plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates, as well as microfossils and trace fossils, to be described in much greater detail than formerly possible, and are applicable to a wide range of preservation types and specimen sizes (Table 1). These methods include non-destructive high-resolution scanning technologies such as conventional X-ray micro-tomography and synchrotron-based X-ray tomography. In addition, form and function can be rigorously investigated through quantitative analysis of computer models, for example finite-element analysis.

We describe a new species of the aetosaur Coahomasuchus, C. chathamensis, based on an incomplete, but largely articulated, anterior portion of a skeleton recovered from a quarry in the Upper Triassic Pekin Formation of Chatham County, North Carolina. This is only the second documented occurrence of Coahomasuchus, with the other being the holotype of C. kahleorum Heckert and Lucas, 1999 from the Upper Triassic Colorado City Formation of Texas. Although much of the specimen is the same size as the holotype of C. kahleorum, the dorsal paramedian osteoderms of the North Carolina taxon are considerably (~1.3×) wider than homologous counterparts in C. kahleorum, and the ventral thoracic osteoderms are also rectangular (~1.5× wider than long), rather than square, presumably to accommodate the wider body. This is a rare instance where two articulated specimens of closely related aetosaur species are available for direct comparison of homologous osteoderms. Isolated osteoderms with similar ornamentation from the same locality indicate that C. chathamensis may have been one of the earliest aetosaurs to attain the broad osteoderm proportions (width:length >3.5:1) otherwise known solely from later branching, spinose taxa such as Typothorax. The co-occurrence of Lucasuchus and Coahomasuchus in both North Carolina and Texas supports past correlations indicating an Otischalkian (Carnian) age for these strata and demonstrates that plesiomorphic, non-spinose aetosaur genera were not necessarily endemic to a single basin in North America.

Anthaspidellid sponges are reported from the La Laja Formation in the Chica de Zonda Range in the Precordillera Oriental, Argentina. These are generically unidentifiable fragments of trabs and more or less well-defined dendroclone spicules. They occur as skeletal elements in small transported fragments and are the only Cambrian occurrence of anthaspidellids known thus far from South America.

Walcott (1920) proposed to include an array of dissociated spicules, including triradiate prodiaenes, hexactines, and probable monactine spicules, in the genus Kiwetinokia. Assemblages tentatively identified as Kiwetinokia utahensis? Walcott, 1920, are reported from the Estancia San Martin Formation, of latest Early Cambrian and early Middle Cambrian age from San Isidro Gulch near Mendoza. Similar spicule assemblages occur in the La Laja Formation from the Chica de Zonda Range, in the Precordillera Oriental near San Juan, and in the Los Sombreros Formation in the Tontal Range of the Precordillera Occidental.

Sclerites of the sponge-like Chancelloria eros Walcott, 1920, are described from the upper Lower to lower Middle Cambrian La Laja Formation. Chancelloria sclerites are also reported here from rocks of the Middle Cambrian Glossopleura Zone in the San Isidro Formation in Empozada Gulch in the San Isidro area of the Precordillera Austral, west of Mendoza, in Mendoza Province. Sponges and chancelloriids from the Cambrian of Argentina are known basically from dissociated skeletal elements.

Conical and vase-shaped calathids are found in the Lower Ordovician Fillmore Formation of western Utah associated with intraformational conglomerates and small patch reefs. Calathium yersini n. sp. exhibits patterns of both the inner and outer walls of calathid two-wall construction. The broadly annulate walls are constructed from meroms with fused proximal merom feet forming the inner wall. The reticulate-patterned outer wall is formed by interlocking stellate ribs at the distal end of each merom. Latitudinal (horizontal) ribs interlock adjacent merom ribs side by side at the tips of ribs while meridional (vertical) ribs overlap merom shaft to merom shaft. Inner and outer walls are perforate. Pore-canal casts preserved in silicified molds suggest an exit and entrance current circulation for inner and outer wall pores. Upper ends of the calathids are not preserved, but an open cup is interpreted from infill material and encrustation of the interior cup wall by epibionts. Epibionts commonly encrust and thicken Calathium outer walls, with the cyanobacterium Girvanella as the dominant encrusting organism. Calathium yersini n. sp., among the earliest of receptaculitids, has a morphology suitable for water circulation consistent with that of filter-feeding organisms.

A new genus and species of eurypterid (Eurypterida: Chelicerata) is described as Orcanopterus manitoulinensis from the Upper Ordovician Kagawong Submember (Upper Member) of the Georgian Bay Formation, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. The material comprises several partial specimens in addition to disarticulated carapaces, appendages, metastomas, opisthosomal segments, and telsons. Associated fossils include rare bryozoans, a conularid, ostracodes, and conodonts. A restricted marine lagoon, or very shallow subtidal to intertidal environment is inferred. This assemblage, perhaps representing an accumulation of molted exuviae, was apparently preserved as the result of rapid burial by carbonate muds and silts during a storm event. O. manitoulinensis shares a number of traits with both the Hughmilleriidae and the Carcinosomatidae. Diagnostic features include curved preabdominal segments, a petaloid A metastoma with deep anterior emargination, spiniferous appendages of Carcinosoma type, paddle with enlarged, symmetrical podomere 9, and a xiphous telson. It is only the fourth (the first Canadian) well-documented Ordovician eurypterid genus, and provides the oldest reliable record of the Hughmillerioidea to date.

Complete exoskeletons of species of eight genera of Siluro-Devonian Scutelluinae show the morphology of the cephalon and thorax, particularly glabellar lobation, the wide inward extent of the doublure, and the development of fulcral processes and sockets, the latter more prominent on the external surface in stratigraphically younger species. The thorax of ten segments has axial rings with an articulating furrow and halfring as in most trilobites. The differences between the exoskeletons of Scutelluinae and Illaenidae are many, and imply anatomical differences. It is considered that Scutelluinae are related to the Ordovician Stygininae, and are to be united with them in Styginidae; a common origin for Styginidae and Illaenidae appears questionable.

Trilobites collected during the past 20 years from the Morgan Creek, Point Peak, and San Saba Members of the Wilberns Formation comprise 89 species assigned to 45 genera belonging to zones of the upper Franconian and Trempealeauan Stages of the Upper Cambrian Croixan Series. New zonal names are proposed in the interest of a regionally applicable nomenclature. Although none of the zonal nomenclature is identical to that of the 1944 Cambrian Correlation Chart of Howell et al., the four zones recognized in central Texas are equivalent to the eight highest zones on the Chart. Stratigraphically lowest is the Franconian Taenicephalus Zone, with a locally recognized Parabolinoides Subzone at its base; this zone is equivalent to the Conaspis Zone of the Correlation Chart. The Franconian Idahoia Zone, with a locally recognized Idahoia lirae Subzone at its base, is equivalent to the Ptychaspis Subzone of the Ptychaspis-Prosaukia Zone of the Correlation Chart. The sparsely fossiliferous Ellipsocephaloides Zone corresponds to the Prosaukia Subzone of the Ptychaspis-Prosaukia Zone on the Chart. Almost two-thirds of the trilobite species described occur in the Trempealeauan Saukia Zone, which corresponds to the five highest zones of the Correlation Chart; local subzones, in ascending order, are the Saukiella pyrene Subzone, the Saukiella junta Subzone, the Saukiella serotina Subzone, and the Corbinia apopsis Subzone.

The succession of ptychoparioid trilobite faunas within these zones characterizes the Ptychaspid Biomere. The base of the biomere is at the base of the Taenicephalus Zone; the top coincides with the lowest occurrence of an Ordovician trilobite fauna. Trilobite families that characterize the Ptychaspid Biomere are the Ptychaspididae and the Parabolinoididae.

Systematic descriptions include two new subfamilies, Drumaspidinae and Ptychaspidinae, and eight new species, Conaspis leptoholcis, Idiomesus infimus, Euptychaspis frontalis, Keithiella scapane, Saukiella serotina, Prosaukia remora, Calvinella prethoparia, and Westonaspis? texana.

Iberonepa romerali n. gen. and sp. is the most abundant insect species found in Lower Cretaceous (Barremian) lithographic limestones at “Las Hoyas,” Spain. External features of this species indicate that it should be assigned to the family Belostomatidae, with a similarity to the species Stygeonepa foersteri Popov, 1971, which was found in the Upper Jurassic (Tithonian) lithographic limestones of Solnhofen. This article discusses the relation between these two species and subfamilies of the Recent Belostomatidae. The new “Las Hoyas” species is described from adult specimens and from molts of nymphs, these differing only slightly from one another. The abundant number of specimens and the generally exceptional preservation have allowed interpretation of its probable natatory behavior on the basis of the functional morphology of the insect's legs.

A well-preserved and locally abundant crinoid fauna has been discovered in the lower part of the Champlainian (Middle Ordovician) Glenhaven Member of the Guttenberg Formation in the Upper Mississippi Valley region. The material consists of the dicyclic inadunates Cupulocrinus levorsoni n. sp., C. jewetti (E. Billings) and monocyclic camerate Pycnocrinus gerki n. sp.

Three late Devonian ammonoid-bearing levels are described from the area of Cleveland, Ohio. These appear to represent the German Platyclymenia, Clymenia and Wocklumeria Stufen, clear evidence for which has been lacking previously in eastern North America. The lowest level, around the base of the Cleveland Shale, yields Sporadoceras, Cyrtoclymenia, Platyclymenia and a new species, Pleuroclymenia (?) ohioense. The middle level, near the top of the Cleveland Shale, bears Cymaclymenia, Sporadoceras and Prionoceras. The highest level, just above the base of the Bedford Shale, has Prionoceras quadripartitum. This species, and a fauna of the basal Bedford, have been located also in the area of Columbus, Ohio. An Epiwocklumeria (?) sp. is recorded from Indiana. Attention is drawn to the international importance of the late Famennian and Lower Carboniferous ammonoid sequence which can now be recognized in Ohio.

The Late Pennsylvanian (Kasimovian, early Stephanian) sub- to perimontaneous Souss basin, situated in the present-day southwestern High Atlas mountains of Morocco, contains the hitherto only known late Paleozoic entomofauna from North Africa, which is simultaneously also the southernmost Euramerican entomofauna. The present study provides descriptions, identifications, and revisions of several species belonging to the genera Phyloblatta and Anthracoblattina (family Phyloblattidae) and of the genus Compsoblatta (family Compsoblattidae). A relatively large number of well-preserved Phyloblatta forewings, compared with congeneric species from several insect localities in Europe and North America, permits insights into the individual, intraspecific, and interspecific variability of the venation pattern as indispensable base for the description of the new specimens and the revision of several older species. The Souss insect beds cover a wide range of potential habitats. They are situated in different paleogeographical positions within the Souss basin and scattered across a 900 m thick succession of sediments. The single insect beds represent different sedimentary and biotic subenvironments from swamps and mires to shallow and deep lakes within a fluvial-dominated megaenvironment.

The fruits of the extinct genus Hemitrapa Miki (Trapaceae) are described from the Miocene Shanwang Formation, representing its first fossil record in the Cenozoic of China. Bearing a fusiform, relatively small fruit body with a very long stalk and four sub-equal, strongly ascending, horn-like arms, the Chinese fossil fruits are described as H. shanwangensis Q. Wang new species. Prior to this discovery, a dispersed, trapaceous pollen Sporotrapoidites erdtmanii (Nagy) Nagy was documented from the same formation. Recent paleobotanical and palynological studies in Europe demonstrated that Hemitrapa was closely related to S. erdtmanii, so the co-occurrence of Hemitrapa fruits and S. erdtmanii pollen at Shanwang implies that they may stem from the same parental plant population. Hemitrapa fruits have been widely recognized from the Miocene of mid-latitudes in France, Austria, the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Russia, Korea, Japan and the U.S.A. as well as from the late Oligocene–Miocene of Germany and the late Eocene of the Czech Republic. In contrast, dispersed S. erdtmanii pollen has been recovered from the Miocene in central Europe as well as from the late Eocene to the Pliocene of eastern Asiatic shelf basins near the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and the Sea of Japan. Overall, the microfossil and macrofossil records demonstrate that the parental plants of Hemitrapa might have begun to diversify from the mid-latitudes of Eurasia since the Eocene, flourished in eastern Asia and Central Europe during the Miocene, and become extinct after the Pliocene.

Although used in biostratigraphy and in studies of early Cambrian trilobite evolution, the olenelloid genus Peachella has received little research attention. The ontogenetic and evolutionary origins of its derived features—an effaced cephalon and grossly inflated genal spines—have remained mysterious. Based on examination of new and existing collections, P. iddingsi and P. brevispina are here described in detail, including aspects of their respective ontogenies and the first description of the thorax of P. iddingsi. A new monotypic genus, Eopeachella, is also described from recently collected material from the Delamar Member of the Pioche Formation, Nevada. Eopeachella angustispina n. gen. n. sp., is less derived and stratigraphically older than both Peachella species and bridges the morphological gap between Peachella and typical olenelloids. The study reveals that cephalic effacement was progressively attained during both ontogeny and phylogeny in the Eopeachella + Peachella clade. Comparative ontogeny with other olenelloids reveals that progressive effacement was a trend superimposed upon and independent of a conserved pattern of ontogenetic shape change in the glabella and did not represent a peramorphic “extension” of glabellar ontogeny. Genal spine inflation was also achieved progressively (in a proximal-to-distal direction) through both ontogeny and phylogeny in the Eopeachella + Peachella clade. Genal spine inflation that convergently arose in later trilobite groups may have been similarly ontogenetically dynamic. Discovery of E. angustispina and P. brevispina in the Delamar Member raises olenelloid diversity in this member to at least 20 species; a higher diversity than in any coeval unit.

An uppermost Gzhelian bioherm discovered in the central highlands of Timor Leste contains abundant foraminifera belonging to 17 genera. Representatives of the families Biseriamminidae, Biwaellidae, Bradyinidae, Cornuspiridae, Lasiodiscidae, Palaeotextulariidae, Pseudotaxidae, Ozawainellidae, Schubertellidae, Schwagerinidae, Staffellidae and Textrataxidae are present, including 21 species referred to known types and 12 species left in open nomenclature. Two new Schwagerina species are described: Schwagerina timorensis new species, and Schwagerina maubissensis new species. The assemblage belongs to the uppermost Gzhelian Schwagerina robusta–Ultradaixina bosbytauensis Zone although a possible lowest Asselian correlation cannot be excluded (the name Ultradaixina is controversial and sometimes synonymized as Bosbytauella. The case to resolve this issue has been submitted to the Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature). The bioherm is the oldest carbonate unit so far recorded from the Maubisse Formation and the oldest sedimentary unit biostratigraphically dated in Timor. This discovery has implications for the latest Carboniferous–earliest Permian climate history of Timor that lay in the northern part of the north-south East Gondwana rift system along which the western margin of Australia later developed. The highest peak in fusulinid diversity within the Pennsylvanian–Cisuralian interval and a major marine transgression documented in many regions in Northern Pangaea took place during the latest Gzhelian to earliest Asselian and evidence for this is now extended to southern Pangaea. Cluster analysis, using the Jaccard similarity index at species level, of late Gzhelian fusulinids from 16 regions has been performed. This shows that the Timor fauna is most closely related to faunas from South China and the Changning-Menlian region of Yunnan (China). The assemblages here are distinct from those of three biogeographic regions (Arctic, Uralo-Asian and Irano-Taurids) recognized within the Tropical belt.
