Haystack Cave, Gunnison County, Colorado, has provided the first collection of vertebrate remains from the Pleistocene (Rancholabrean) of western Colorado. Two carbon 14 analyses of bone apatite have produced dates of 14,935 ± 610 and 12,154 ± 1,700 years B.P. for this assemblage. This fauna, in conjunction with pollen studies, indicates the Gunnison Basin was largely unforested grassland/sagebrush shrubland in the lower basin, with open coniferous forests extending to the edges of the basin, during the late Pleistocene. The fauna also extends the known Pleistocene range of Lagurus curtatus, Phenacomys intermedius, Spilogale putorius, and Acinonyx trumani.

Two isolated cephalopod jaws recovered from the middle Turonian of the Obira area and the Campanian of the Nakagawa area, Hokkaido, Japan, consist of short outer, and large and posteriorly elongated inner “chitinous” lamellae, with a sharply pointed rostrum in the outer lamella. These features are common with the upper jaws of Recent cephalopods. Comparison with the upper jaws of ammonoids and Recent cephalopods indicates that the two Cretaceous upper jaws are attributed to the Coleoidea other than the Octopodida. This assignment is also suggested by the cladistic analysis of the Nakagawa specimen compared with five upper jaw characters on 22 Recent cephalopod species. The Obira specimen differs from the Nakagawa specimen in having a much smaller jaw and a larger jaw angle, but its order-level assignment could not be determined because of imperfect preservation. The Nakagawa specimen shares several common features with the upper jaws of Recent Oegopsina; thus we assigned its higher systematic position to this suborder. Based on the extremely large upper jaw (97 mm maximum length), a new genus and species (Yezoteuthis giganteus) is proposed. This new taxon would have been as large as the modern giant squid Architeuthis, which commonly exceeds more than 5 m in body length. Our study postulates that studies of jaws are important to reconstruct the phylogeny of the Coleoidea.

The type material of Ilionia prisca (Hisinger) is redescribed. This species shows several basic morphological characteristics typical of Recent Lucinacea, including an anteriorly expanded shell with conspicuous diagonal sulci, a hypertrophied anterior adductor muscle scar, and a nonsinuate pallial line. It is believed to have been a suspension feeder provided with a posterior exhalant siphon and capable of forming an anterior inhalant mucus tube in the sediment. Ilionia prisca lived in a habitat unfavorable for most other bivalves, deeply buried in a soft, oxygen-poor and sulphur-rich mud, in which it oriented itself obliquely against the direction of water movement. Probably it lived in symbiosis with chemoautotrophic bacteria. It is suggested that Ilionia prisca is the oldest known deep-burrowing suspension-feeding bivalve.

Llandovery Encrinurinae from the Whittaker Formation in the central Mackenzie Mountains include Cromus canorus n. sp., Distyrax cooperi n. sp., Distyrax n. sp. A, Perryus bartletti n. sp., and Encrinurus n. sp. Additional diversity of Distyrax Lane, 1988, demands a revised generic diagnosis with emphasis on pygidial homologies; new species are described from the Llandovery of Newfoundland and Ontario. Several characters suggest a sister group relationship between Distyrax and Encrinurus s.s. A lectotype is designated for the Llandovery species Encrinurus elegantulus Billings, 1866. Cromus canorus n. sp. is closely allied to other northern Laurentian Llandovery species. Synapomorphies of Cromus are inclusive for Encrinuraspis as revised by Snajdr, 1985. The long stratigraphic range and morphological conservatism of Cromus are correlated with occurrence in distal mudstone facies. Ontogenetic material for Distyrax n. sp. A, Cromus canorus, and Perryus bartletti is described, with consideration of librigenal spine homologies in Encrinurinae. Humaencrinuroides Nan, 1985, is a pliomerid of the new subfamily Quinquecostinae, and not a subgenus of Encrinuroides Reed.

Calcareous algae are frequent constituents in the shallow-marine limestone intercalations of late Aptian–Maastrichtian strata of the Eastern Desert of Egypt, the Sinai, and southern Jordan. A total of 18 species of green algae (among them 16 dasycladaceans with Praturlonella hammudai n. comb. and Praturlonella jordanica n. sp., two udoteaceans) and eight species of red algae (among them two gymnocodiaceans, three solenoporaceans, and one squamariacean) are described and compared with algae from several Tethyan occurrences. The stratigraphic distribution is calibrated by 10 assemblage-zones based on the associated foraminiferids and compared with 10 ammonite assemblage-zones.

The algal contents vary within the different strata: their total contents and diversities increase from the late Aptian–Albian carbonates to the Cenomanian and decrease to the Turonian–Coniacian; no algae were proved in the Santonian–Campanian. The Maastrichtian occurrences are limited to one outcrop.

Four specimens of a new cornute-grade stylophoran Ponticulocarpus robisoni new genus and species are described from the Spence Shale of northern Utah. Ponticulocarpus has wide and thin spinal and glossal processes interpreted as a mechanism for snowshoeing in a soft substrate. The presence of a posterior bar across the inferior posterior lobe, and two small bridges connecting the left adoral to M′2 on the superior face and connecting M1 to M3 on the inferior face are unique in cornute-grade stylophorans. The posterior bar may be homologous with the posterior marginals M′5 and M6 of other cornute-grade stylophorans, and an opening of the most posterior portion of the theca may have resulted in the development of the digital and glossal processes from marginals.

Examination of extremely well-preserved cuticle samples from the Maastrichtian retroplumid crab, Costacopluma mexicana Vega and Perrilliat, collected in the Difunta Group in Nuevo León State, Mexico, documents the preservation of corpses in an anoxic microenvironment produced by decomposition of soft tissue of the organisms. All four cuticular layers, epicuticle, exocuticle, endocuticle, and membranous layer, as well as pore canals and tegumental glands, can be recognized. There is no evidence of resorption that accompanies molting. X-ray analysis of the cuticle indicates that the organic matrix was replaced by carbonate-hydroxyapatite, that the original calcitic material was replaced by quartz, and that the replacement proceeded from the outer and inner surfaces of the cuticle toward the interior. The specimens were interpreted to have been preserved in an organic-rich, restricted lagoon in which pH was changed by periodic influxes of fresh water.

Borealarges n. gen. (type species B. reedi n. gen. and sp.) is a group of trochurine trilobites of mainly northern Laurentian distribution, closely related to both Richterarges Phleger and Terranovia Maximova. Richterarges is restricted to a Laurentian Ludlow-Přídolí clade of unambiguous monophyly. Taken together, the genera form a monophyletic subdivision of Trochurinae. Phylogenetic relationships within this clade are poorly resolved. The precise relationships of some members of the group are difficult to determine at present, and these species are referred to Borealarges sensu lato. Members of Borealarges are ubiquitous elements of silicified Wenlock–Ludlow trilobite faunas contained in debris flows of the Cape Phillips Formation of the central Canadian Arctic. At present, known post-Wenlock diversity of Borealarges is exclusively northern Laurentian, although this may be a function of lack of study in other areas. New species include B. reedi, B. morrisoni, and B. tuckerae, and B. s.l. B. calei. Borealarges mikulicorum (Perry and Chatterton) is revised.

Nilpenia rossi new genus new species, described here from the Ediacara Member (Rawnsley Quartzite, South Australia), provides evidence of a Precambrian macroscopic sessile sediment-dweller. Nilpenia, ranging up to 30 cm in diameter, consists of two zones, a complex central area surrounded by radiating, dichotomously branching structures that decrease in diameter from the center to the outer edges. Other elements of the Ediacara Biota are interpreted to have been mat-encrusters but Nilpenia uniquely grew within the upper millimeters of the actual sediment displacing sediment with growth. This sediment surface was rippled and cohesive and may well have included an endobenthic mat. The branching network on the upper surface of the organisms would have been in contact with the water. The phylogenetic relationships of the Ediacara biota are not well constrained and Nilpenia is no exception. However, the morphology and ecology of Nilpenia represent a novel growth strategy present in the Ediacaran and not common today.

Eighteen taxa of linguliform brachiopods, mainly represented by acrotretoids, are reported from the Upper Cambrian (Furongian, Stage 10) and Lower Ordovician (Tremadocian) Tiñu Formation of Oaxaca State, Mexico. At the time of deposition, this area was part of Oaxaquia, which was either a microcontinent or an integral part of the Gondwanan margin. Whereas certain trilobites seem to indicate a Gondwanan affinity, the Tiñu brachiopod faunas show a less definite paleogeographic relationship. Some taxa have previously only been reported from Laurentia (Eurytreta cf. fillmorensis, Eurytreta cf. campaniformis), and one taxon is best known from the Avalon microcontinent (Eurytreta cf. sabrinae). However, the relatively high percentage of new and potentially endemic taxa (Oaxaquiatreta labrifera n. gen. n. sp., Tapuritreta reclinata n. sp., Oaxaquiatreta sp., Eurytreta? n. sp., Acrotretidae n. gen. n. sp., Obolinae gen. and sp. indet.) and the lack of other typical Laurentian, Gondwanan, or Avalonian taxa suggest either a certain degree of insularity of Oaxaquia or reflects a more temperate, unrestricted marine environment during the Early Paleozoic. Other taxa reported from the Tiñu Formation include Semitreta sp., Lingulella? spp., Obolinae gen. and sp. indet., Eoscaphelasma? sp., Ottenbyella? sp. A and sp. B, and Acrotretidae gen. and sp. indet. A, B, and C. Eurytreta and Semitreta are critically reviewed and several taxa previously assigned to them have been excluded. An emended diagnosis for the genus Eurytreta is presented. The presence of delthyrium and notothyrium-like structures in the siphonotretid Oaxaquiatreta n. gen. further strengthens the previously proposed relationship between the Siphonotretida and Paterinida.

A rudist fauna composed of the radiolitids Potosites tristantorresi new genus, new species and Radiolites acutocostata (Adkins), the hippuritids Barrettia cf. ruseae Chubb, Torreites sanchezi (Douvillé), and Vaccinites vermunti Mac Gillavry, plagioptychids, and antillocaprinids is described from a rudist limestone succession in the central Mexican State of San Luis Potosí. The previously known species, one radiolitid from Texas and three hippuritids from the Caribbean Biogeographic Province, indicate the early Campanian. The new genus is a large radiolitid with a coiled and canaliculated left valve. New observations on R. acutocostata and V. vermunti shell morphology and variability are provided. Observations made on well preserved specimens of the latter species clarify the outer shell layer structure of the hippuritids right valve and has taxonomic implications. This is the first report of genus Torreites in Mexico and one of the northernmost records of genus Barrettia, already reported in southern Mexico from Chiapas State. This rudist limestone succession (informally ‘Temazcal limestones’ herein) is an easy-to-recognize cartographical unit; up to now it and Santonian and Turonian units have been mapped as the El Abra Formation in most available geological maps. Recognition of the successive carbonate platform intervals, between El Abra and Cardenas formations, improves the geological mapping and the understanding of the Mexican Gulf western margin evolution during the Late Cretaceous.

The Orthograptus quadrimucronatus species group currently comprises 22 taxa, which, with the exception of O. ruedemanni, are distinguished from other orthograptids by the presence of paired apertural spines on their thecae. A detailed morphometric analysis of this group indicates that these taxa comprise four basic morphotypes that actually represent only six distinct species: O. pageanus, O. quadrimucronatus, O. spinigerus, O. ruedemanni, O. eucharis, and O. rivai.

Specimens of Orthograptus pageanus have a rapidly widening rhabdosome with elongated spines on the first two or four thecae. Orthograptus pageanus is divided into two chronological subspecies, an older, smaller form, O. pageanus pageanus, and a younger, larger form, O. pageanus maximus n. subsp. Specimens of O. spinigerus have elongated spines on one or two thecal pairs between the sixth and thirteenth thecal pairs, a very narrow proximal end, and a rapidly widening rhabdosome. Specimens of O. quadrimucronatus have a more parallel-sided shape and no unusually long spines. The subspecies O. quadrimucronatus richmondensis is differentiated by the absence of both a median septum and a th 12 spine. Orthograptus ruedemanni, O. rivai, and O. eucharis are all dwarf forms.

Within a chronostratigraphic framework based on K-bentonite bed correlations the pattern and process of evolutionary change in the members of the O. quadrimucronatus species group is examined. Morphometrically, each species remains a coherent entity through time, occupying its own distinct morphospace. Each speciation event probably occurred rapidly, precluding the preservation of intermediates, and the new species retained their basic morphology throughout their existence. Within these lineages, phyletic changes were either absent or encompassed only changes in size, even when accumulated for much longer intervals than would be expected for speciation events. These patterns appear to be consistent with the evolutionary model of punctuated equilibrium.

Biogenic structures, herein interpreted as coprolites, were recorded in the ?upper Paleocene–Eocene Las Flores Formation, southeast Argentina. The coprolite origin is supported by several features, such as recurrent extrusive external morphology, longitudinal wrinkles, flattening of the ventral side, concentric and radial cracks, cryptocrystalline groundmass, and a phosphatic composition. A detailed comparative study with modern fecal masses, based on morphology, surface texture, micromorphology, mineralogical and chemical composition, suggest a crocodylian as the most probable producer, an interpretation also supported by the Patagonian paleontological record. This discovery, the first record on coprolites from Central Patagonia, provides new paleoenvironmental and paleoecological information for the studied successions.

The new subfamily Struthiopterinae is proposed for the aporrhaid gastropods occurring in the Late Cretaceous-early Tertiary Weddellian Province along the southern margin of the Pacific. The following genera are placed within the Struthiopterinae: Struthioptera Finlay and Marwick, 1937; Austroaporrhais n. gen.; and Struthiochenopus n. gen. The temporal and biogeographic distribution of members of Struthiopterinae show a similar pattern to other Southern Hemisphere groups of Late Cretaceous and early Cenozoic molluscs with initial disappearance from the western Australasia of the Weddellian Province by the Paleocene while surviving in Antarctica until the late Eocene and eventually disappearing in southern South America during the early Miocene.

Also included in this paper is a reappraisal of the species assignable to these genera from Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary of New Zealand, Antarctica, and southern South America together with the description of five new species. The following new species of the Struthiopterinae are described: Austroaporrhais larseni n. sp., A. stilwelli n. sp., A. dorotensis n. sp., Struthiochenopus antarcticus n. sp., and S. philippii n. sp.

The skeletal anatomy of the Early Permian eureptile Thuringothyris mahlendorffae from the Bromacker Quarry, Germany, is redescribed on the basis of several new specimens. The taxon retains some plesiomorphic characters, such as an ectopterygoid and a tabular, but it also possesses low neural spines and nonswollen neural arches, a combination that is unique for early eureptiles. A phylogenetic analysis places Thuringothyris as the sister taxon of Captorhinidae, excluding any potential “protorothyridid” affinities. Implications of this study are that the swollen neural arches of captorhinids and araeosceloids might have evolved independently, that a downturned rostrum occurred only later in captorhinid evolution, and that the European Permian is important to the understanding of the origin of eureptiles.

Description of two new species of the brachyuran genus Xanthosia Bell, 1863, from the upper Albian to Cenomanian Weno and Pawpaw formations from Tarrant County, Texas, increases the number of species in the genus to fifteen. Xanthosia has been recognized in England, the Netherlands, Madagascar, and in in the states of New Jersey, South Dakota, and Texas. The geologically oldest species from England gave rise to species from North America, Europe, and Madagascar. One group of species, with representatives from South Dakota, New Jersey, and Madagascar, may represent a separate taxon. The species “Xanthosia” robertsi Secretan is herein removed from the genus and placed within the Portunidae, not the Xanthidae.

The Non-Mineralized arthropod described herein is derived from the Sirius Passet fossil conservation deposit of North Greenland (82°47.6,N, 42°13.7ʹW), the oldest locality with exceptional preservation of soft tissues known from the Cambrian of Laurentia (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 3; Nevadella Zone). As such, it is broadly contemporaneous with the Chengjiang fauna of China (Hou et al., 2004) and some 10 million years older than the Burgess Shale fauna of British Columbia. The Sirius Passet fauna was first documented by Conway Morris et al. (1987) and its geological setting is discussed by Babcock and Peel (2007). In addition to the nevadiid trilobite Buenellus higginsi Blaker, 1988, the fauna is dominated by non-mineralized arthropods (Budd, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999; Williams et al., 1996; Taylor, 2002). Other finds include sponges (Rigby, 1986), a lobopod (Budd and Peel, 1998), the earliest annelids (Conway Morris and Peel, 2008) and articulated halkieriids (Conway Morris and Peel, 1990, 1995), but most of the assemblage awaits description.

The internal morphology of ambocoeliid brachiopods from the Middle Devonian Hamilton Group of western New York indicates a need for several taxonomic revisions. “Ambocoelia” praeumbona is transferred to Emanuella. “Ambocoelia” spinosa and “A.” nana represent Crurispina n. gen. Specimens of species belonging to Crurispina have moderately well developed crural plates, and, accordingly, they are assigned to the subfamily Rhynchospiriferinae. Crural plates are small and obscure but clearly present in Ambocoelia umbonata, the type species of Ambocoelia. Thus, the diagnosis of the subfamily Ambocoeliinae is emended to include species with tiny crural plates.

Ambocoeliid specimens from the Levanna Shale Member of the Skaneateles Formation, formerly referred to Echinocoelia, reveal several elaborate features in the pedicle valve, including an apical plate and a hollow tube supported by a median septum. These specimens represent a new genus and species, Mucroclipeus eliei. The homeomorphy found in the shape and size of these ambocoeliids may be the result of paedomorphosis. Additionally, their pattern of occurrence and minute size suggest that they attained their paedomorphic state through progenesis. The taxa Ambocoelia tuberculata n. sp., Crurispina n. gen., and Mucroclipeus eliei n. gen. and sp. are established.

Patelliocrinus planus n. sp. (Patelliocrinidae), Manticrinus exaitos n. gen., n. sp. (Marsupiocrinidae), and Clematocrinus ohioensis n. sp. (Hapalocrinidae) are described from southwestern Ohio. These new Early Silurian crinoids are from the upper lower or middle Llandoverian Brassfield Formation. Patelliocrinus planus is the oldest member of this genus. It was originally designated as Platycrinid(?) by Foerste (1919) and, subsequently, Brower (1973) placed it in the Hapalocrinidae. Manticrinus is placed in the Marsupiocrinidae, previously a monogeneric family, and is the oldest member of this family. Manticrinus is judged to have evolved from Macrostylocrinus.

Species assignments are clarified between Clematocrinus and Hapalocrinus. These genera are distinguished by character of the arms, primibrachial number, and presence of cirri. Clematocrinus ohioensis is the oldest member of this genus and perhaps of the Hapalocrinidae.
