In the spring of 1937 an experiment was conducted to test existing commercial facilities for the transport of bull semen between England and Holland. Samples were sent to and received from Holland via Royal Dutch Air Lines, to whom the authors wish to express their sincere thanks for most useful co-operation. The minimum interval between collection in one country and insemination in the other was 28 hr. and the maximum, 57 hr.

1. The mean iodine values and melting points of the fats from 16-month-old Romney wethers grazed on different pasture species including: perennial ryegrass or short-rotation ryegrass alone or admixed with white clover were as follows perinephric, i.v. 41.3-46.1, M.P. 47.7-49.4°C; omental, i.v. 43.2-47.4, M.P. 46.6-47.4°C; subcutaneous, i.v. 46.4-50.4, M.P. 44.2-46.0°C and 1. dorsi muscle, i.v. 57.5-60.3, M.P. 39.7-41.5°C. The iodine values were several units higher than those obtained previously (Shorland etal. 1962) for corresponding fats from mature Romney ewes.

The effect of three herbicides and an insecticide combination on nitrogen fixation in three paddy soils was investigated in a laboratory incubation study. The influence of pesticide combination on N2 fixation was evaluated in the presence and absence of rice straw under flooded and non-flooded conditions. In a non-flooded alluvial soil single or combined application of butachlor and carbofuran significantly stimulated N2 fixation. There was no effect on N2 fixation when thiobencarb was applied alone; but with thiobencarb in combination with carbofuran higher N2 fixation occurred. Both oxadiazone and thiobencarb had no effect on N2 fixation under flooded conditions, but in combination with carbofuran the N2 fixation was high. In acid sulphate saline Pokkali soil, rice straw application stimulated N2 fixation; the stimulatory effect of carbofuran either alone or in combination became more pronounced under flooded conditions. N2 fixation was low in a laterite Sukinda soil and the effect of pesticides was not changed by rice straw amendment. A uniform stimulation of N2 fixation occurred in soils when carbofuran was applied either singly or in combination with other herbicides tested. Results indicate that the effect of pesticides on N2 fixation varied with the rice straw application and water regime.

Superior and inferior rice grains have different weights and are located on the upper primary branch and lower secondary branches of the panicle, respectively. To study differences in germination vigour of these two types of grain, a number of factors were investigated from 0 to 48 h of germination. The present study demonstrated that in inferior grains the starch granule structure was looser at 0 h, with full water absorption at 48 h, while in superior grains the structure was tight and dense. Relative water content increased, and dry matter decreased, more rapidly in inferior grains than in superior ones. Abscisic acid and gibberellin levels, as well as α-amylase activity, also changed more rapidly in inferior grains, while soluble sugar content and amylase coding gene expression increased more rapidly in inferior than superior grains during early germination. The expression of OsGAMYB was higher in inferior grains at 24 h but higher in superior grains at 48 h. The phenotypic index of seedlings was higher in seedlings from superior grains at the two-leaf stage. However, the thousand-grain weight and yield per plant in superior and inferior plants showed no significant difference at harvest. The present study indicates that inferior grains germinate faster than superior ones in the early germination stage. Although inferior grains produced weaker seedlings, it is worthwhile using them in rice production due to their comparative yield potential over that of superior grains.

In a 3-year plot experiment on a perennial ryegrass plus white clover sward the pH of the soil on the main plots was adjusted to, and maintained as nearly as possible at, target levels of 5·25, 6·00 and 6·75 by applying either sulphur or lime. Within the main plots the effects on herbage yield, clover content and crude-protein content of applying four fertilizers were compared at nitrogen rates of 225 and 450 kg/ha annually. The fertilizers were liquid manure (urine plus water), prilled urea, a urea solution and an ammonium-nitrate fertilizer. The applications of the urea and the ammonium-nitrate fertilizers were accompanied by dressings of a potassium fertilizer which supplied the same weights of potassium as in the liquid manure. On average the smallest yields of dry matter and crude protein were associated with the lowest soil pH with no significant interactions between pH and fertilizer treatment. The liquid manure gave slightly smaller total yields of mixed herbage dry matter than the other fertilizers, particularly at the low nitrogen rate. The herbage from the liquid manure treatment had a higher clover content and produced a greater total yield of clover dry matter. The effects of the liquid manure on the clover agree with those noted in previous experiments, but no evidence was found that these effects resulted from the liquid manure increasing the pH of the soil and improving the conditions for clover growth. Similarly, no proof was obtained that the clover effects were due to the nitrogen in the liquid manure being wholly in the ammonium form. However, the value of liquid manure as a fertilizer for grassland was demonstrated clearly.

An account has been given of an experiment in cross-breeding carried out at the Northern Breeding Station of the National Poultry Institute at Rease-heath, Cheshire.

The breeds used for crossing were the Rhode Island Red and the White Leghorn. Much care was taken to ensure that the birds were of good quality and were from outbred stocks.

Fertility was at a high level of about 90 ―. It was significantly lower for White Leghorn × Rhode Island Red matings (88·3 ―) than for the pure White Leghorn matings (93·7 ―).

Cross-mating had little effect on hatchability of fertile eggs. The fertile eggs from Rhode Island Red dams hatched better than those from White Leghorn dams. A suggestion is made that this may be associated with a difference of porosity in the eggs of the two breeds.

Simulation of the water balance in cropping systems is an essential tool, not only to monitor water status and determine drought but also to find ways in which soil water and irrigation water can be used more efficiently. However, besides the requirement that models are physically correct, the spatial representativeness of input data and, in particular, accurate precipitation data remain a challenge. In recent years, satellite-based soil moisture products have become an important data source for soil wetness information at various spatial-temporal scales. Four different study areas in the Czech Republic and Austria were selected representing Central European soil and climatic conditions. The performance of soil water content outputs from two different crop-water balance models and the Metop Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT) soil moisture product was tested with field measurements from 2007 to 2011. The model output for soil water content shows that the crop model Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer performs well during dry periods (<30% plant available soil moisture (ASM), whereas the soil water-balance model SoilClim presents the best results in humid months (>60% ASM). Moreover, the model performance is best in the early growing season and decreases later in the season due to biases in simulated crop-related above-ground biomass compared with the relatively stable grass canopy of the measurement sites. The Metop ASCAT soil moisture product, which presents a spatial average of soil surface moisture, shows the best performance under medium soil wetness conditions (30–50% ASM), which is related to low variation in precipitation frequency and under conditions of low-surface biomass (early vegetation season).

Thirteen field experiments were made during 6 years on seed-potato growing farms in south-east Scotland, comparing three rates, 70, 140 and 280 kg K/ha as potassium chloride and four rates of 0–54 kg Mg/ha as kieserite in 3 × 4 factorial experiments.

More than 70 kg/ha of potassium increased total yield only at one site, which had a recent history of low K application and very low available K. Yields were decreased by more than 70 kg/ha of potassium at three sites in a season with abnormally dry conditions just after planting. Applied magnesium had little effect on total yield.

Extra potassium increased ware yield but decreased seed yield, both consistently, probably because the fertilizer damaged some stolons at or before tuber initiation and fewer tubers developed. The ware/seed ratio was generally increased by extra K, but after the dry spring this ratio was unaltered or reduced. Applied magnesium had little effect on the ratio.

Our results suggest that the present rates of K fertilizer, used for commercial seed-potato crops (114–138 kg K/ha) in south-east Scotland are excessive, and a much lower rate of approximately 70 kg K/ha would be adequate except on very low K sites.

The effects of different levels of first-winter nutrition over 3 years were studied on the subsequent life-time production from the hill of groups of North and South Country Cheviot ewe hoggs (sheep between 6 months and 1½12 years).

Lamb production was examined in terms of the percentage of lambs born and reared per ewe alive at each lambing and was expressed as a mean of five lamb crops. An overall measure of flock life-time production was calculated from the data on lamb production. This was the total number of lambs weaned at a mean 15 weeks in each treatment group over five lamb crops expressed as the mean per experimental animal alive at 6 months.

All productive components were analysed for differences between breeds, treatments, and weight-classes, i.e. those animals above or below average weight at 6 months.

There were no significant treatment differences in life-time production, although the treatment groups showed different trends with increasing age. Higher production in early life following higher levels of first-winter nutrition was associated with less efficient later production and poorer ewe survival in a hard hill environment.

It is concluded that improvement in first-winter nutrition above that available on the hill is undesirable and uneconomic without equal improvement in adult nutrition.

1. The solubility of the phosphorus of soils and of other phosphatic materials in solutions of sodium hydroxide has been investigated. A method for the extraction and determination of the soluble phosphorus is described.

2. With acid soils, especially when the exchangeable calcium has been removed by leaching, an approximately constant amount of phosphorus is extracted by sodium hydroxide solution of strengths from 2 per cent to 20 per cent. The soda-soluble fraction amounts to 90 per cent of the total phosphorus.

3. Soils containing free calcium carbonate vary in the solubility of their phosphorus in sodium hydroxide solutions. Some behave similarly to acid soils, whilst others show only a small fraction of their total phosphorus to be soda-soluble. The extraction is complicated by the presence of calcium carbonate, which can precipitate from solution compounds which, in its absence, are soda-soluble.

1. A balanced factorial experiment was carried out with forty-eight Merino ewes. There were two levels of each of the four factors: environmental temperature, thyroxine status, vitamin A intake and progesterone status. Each ewe was killed at 25 days' pregnancy. The embryos and their membranes were weighed and examined histologically.

2. There appeared to be no treatment effects on the embryonic length/weight ratio. The ratio between embryonic weight and ‘conceptus minus fluid’ weight may have been affected. There was no evidence of treatment effects on the degree of differentiation of either the embryo or the chorioallantois.

3. Surviving embryos tended to be large where thyroxine was supplied, i.e. where viability was good, and vice versa. Dead embryos fell into two groups: those less than 3 mm. long and those 6 mm. or more which had probably died shortly before the ewes were killed.

4. There were no significant correlations between the weights of live embryos and mean rectal temperature, plasma vitamin A concentration or any of the histological indices measured in the endometrium. In the hot-room live embryo weight was correlated with the height of the ewe's bladder epithelium (P < 0·01).

5. It is suggested that in the absence of adequate maternal thyroid hormone (i) the trophoblast may enlarge too slowly to stimulate adequately some response in the endometrium essential for maintenance of the embryo, or (ii) disproportionate growth in different parts of the conceptus may result directly in embryonic failure.

Two field experiments and one pot experiment were carried out to test the hypothesis that competition and dominance relations between and within inflorescences control seed yield. The experiments compared untreated field bean (Vicia faba L.) plants with others in which the numbers of inflorescences and flowers had been surgically reduced to 18 defined positions at lower or at upper nodes. Growth conditions were varied by sowing date and plant density. Seed yields, yield components and 14C-labelled assimilate distribution were determined.

Most untreated plants set no more than 18 pods while treated ones set 4–7 pods fewer. As variation in seed set per pod was small, the resulting number of seeds remained about 30% less in treated compared with untreated plants. In plants with pods set only at upper nodes, 14C-assimilate distribution shifted in favour of leaf and root production, presumably supporting seed production later on. Concerning seed yield per plant, full compensation was reached as mean weights per seed increased up to 40%. In interactions with growth conditions, small overcompensation effects on seed yield per plant were indicated. Results are discussed in relation to storage capacity and yield stability.

1. Two digestibility trials were carried out to determine the s.e. and t.d.n. of swedes, fodder beet and grass silage when fed alone and when each kind of root was fed with silage at separate feeds. In addition, fodder beet and silage were fed together at the same feed.

2. The results were examined to determine if the feeding of roots and silage together in the diet, but at separate feeds, had led to any complementary effect.

3. No complementary effect was found when swedes and silage were fed at separate feeds.

4. A negative complementary effect was found when fodder beet and silage were fed at separate feeds.

5. The s.e. and t.d.n. values of the fodder beet plus silage at each feed were significantly higher than when the two foods were given at separate feed times.

6. The s.e. and t.d.n. of the swede dry matter were higher than the standard figures published. An explanation is given.

7. The nutritive value of the fodder-beet dry matter was not higher than that of swede dry matter.

8. The results of the digestibility trials are compared with some calculated results from a cattle feeding trial.

This study, conducted at the São Paulo State University feedlot, Dracena campus, Brazil, was designed as a completely randomized block with 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate the effects of adding functional oils (FO) or sodium monensin (MON) on feedlot performance, carcass traits, feeding behaviour and rumen morphometrics of Nellore cattle. Ninety-six 20-mo-old Nellore bulls (365.52 ± 39.19 kg) were randomly allocated to 24 pens (n = 4/pen), which were assigned to the treatments: (1) Control (no feed additives); (2) FO (500 ppm); (3) MON (27 ppm); and (4) MON + FO (27 + 500 ppm, respectively). Each treatment was replicated 6 times, and cattle were fed for 105 days. From 0 to 28 days on feed, cattle fed FO had lower dry matter intake (DMI) variation, sorted for medium particles and presented smaller papillae width. The feeding of FO did not negatively impact feedlot performance overall. When MON was added to the diet, cattle had lower DMI overall and 12th rib fat daily gain, and improved gain to feed ratio. The addition of MON to diets improved feedlot performance but reduced the rate of carcass fat deposition. The few effects observed when FO was added to diets were not sufficient to impact feedlot performance.

Parameter regionalization is the foundation for the spatial application of an ecosystem model at the canopy level and has been improved greatly by remote sensing (RS). Photosynthetic rate is restricted by the carboxylation rate, which is limited by the activity of the enzyme Rubisco. By including RS normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and census data of grain yield at the county level in an ecosystem model (vegetation interface processes (VIP) model), the pattern of photosynthetic parameter Vcmax (maximum catalytic activity of Rubisco) of winter wheat was obtained and then used to simulate the wheat yield and evapotranspiration (ET) in the North China Plain (referred to as the Vcmax method). To evaluate its performance, the simulated yield and ET were compared with those derived by the leaf area index (LAI) method using the retrieved LAI from NDVI to drive the VIP model. The results showed that the Vcmax method performed better than the LAI method in highly productive fields, while the LAI method described the inter-annual variations of yield more favourably in fields with low productivity. Over the study area, average yield (4520 kg/ha) and seasonal ET (360 mm) simulated by the LAI method was slightly lower than those simulated using the Vcmax method (4730 kg/ha for yield and 372 mm for ET). Compared with the census data of yield, the relative root mean square error (RMSE) of grain yield with Vcmax method (0·17) was lower than that of the LAI method (0·20). In conclusion, the physical model with spatial Vcmax pattern from remote sensing is reliable for regional crop productivity prediction.

This experiment was made to determine the possible reason for deficiency symptoms seen on fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) in field trials during the dry summer of 1976. Using rockwool cubes for root support, it was shown that symptoms seen in the field plants resulted from boron deficiency.

The symptoms of boron deficiency in fenugreek are described and illustrated. The main symptoms were failure offloweringor fertilization, decreased apical growth, small crisped leaves in a terminal rosette and a gradual yellowing of the lower leaves. In combination with low nitrogen, the boron-deficient plants had yellow, succulent leaves at a very early stage. High calcium and high nitrogen increased the demand for boron.

Inoculation with Rhizobium meliloti of plants with a low nitrogen supply was performed with success. The bacteria formed healthy, pink nodules on the roots inside the rockwool cubes.

The lowest content of boron in whole plants showing boron deficiency symptoms (no pods formed) was 13 μg/g and in this respect fenugreek is very similar to lucerne (Medicago sativa), a plant known to have a high boron requirement. Fenugreek has a high tolerance of excess boron.

Changes occurring during ripening in dry weight and percentage dry-matter content of grain and rachis (cob) have been studied in Inra 200, and comparable data obtained for a U.S.A. dent hybrid, Minnesota 803, a Canadian flint × dent hybrid, OX 302, and a range of European flint × dent hybrids (Prior, Kelvedon 59A, De Kalb 202, Maris Carmine, Pioneer 131 and Anjou 210).

In Minnesota 803, OX 302 and, to a lesser extent, Prior, loss of water from the grain was more rapid than in Inra 200 during later stages of ripening. OX 302 reached a harvestable stage (40% grain water content) 10–12 weeks after silking, about 7 days earlier than Inra 200 in favourable seasons, and nearly 14 days earlier when conditions for ripening were less satisfactory. The patterns of changes occurring in the cob were quite different from those in ripening grain. Maximum dry weight of cob was reached when the grain was in the milk stage, and then declined throughout the period of rapid grain development; in the ripe ear, cob dry weight was 15–20% below its earlier maximum. At comparable grain water contents, the cob in Inra 200 was wetter than in Prior, Minnesota 803 and, even more markedly, OX 302. In contrast, water content in the cob of Maris Carmine and Anjou 210 was slightly higher than in Inra 200. The possible relationship between the differing varietal trends in ripening grain (and cob) and resistance to stalk rot is discussed.

The dry weight of the cob in ripe ears of Inra 200 was barely half that found in OX 302 and Minnesota 803, and lower than in other European flint × dent hybrids. Shelling percentage in ripe ears of Inra 200 was 88–90; it was 84–86 in other European flint × dent hybrids, about 80 in Minnesota 803 and 75 in OX 302. Mention is made of the relevance of this information to choice of variety for production of ground ear maize.

The partitions of phosphorus and aneurin were determined in the colostrum and in the transitional and mature milk of Ayrshire cows with the following results:

1. The ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus was 11:1 in the first mammary secretion but dropped to a minimum value of 4·5:1 a week later. Thereafter the ratio increased throughout lactation attaining a value of 7·2:1 at the fortieth week. The first colostrum was very rich in both phosphorus and nitrogen.

2. Phosphatase titre in colostrum was 154 units in the first post-partum secretion but decreased to 10 during the first five days of lactation. The titre fluctuated slightly during the next few days and increased gradually thereafter, attaining 189 units in the 38th week of lactation.

3. Phosphatase was correlated positively with inorganic-P (r= +0·83) and negatively with both ester-P (r= −0·94) and lipid-P (r= −0·70), all P fractions being expressed as percentages of total P. The percentage of phosphorus present as casein was initially 19–21%, but was only 14% in late lactation.

4. The first colostrum contained 74 μg. aneurin/100 ml. skim milk. This value became 35 in midlactation and only 28 in late lactation. The corresponding figures for cocarboxylase were 20, 5·7 and 2·3 μg./100 ml. respectively, and for protein-bound aneurin 14, 3·2 and 1·7 respectively. Both cocarboxylase and protein-bound aneurin were negatively correlated with phosphatase.

Two groups of five and six ewes were studied through two separate winters by monthly wool and skin samples in an attempt to follow the changes leading up to fleece casting, which occurred extensively in only two animals.

Although no fleece break was observed, the animals that cast most showed the biggest decrease in fibre diameter. They also had a decrease in staple length where the wool was not cast.

Follicle inactivity increased during the observations reaching a peak at the end of the winter, and the animals that cast most had most follicle inactivity. It is concluded that casting was associated not with fleece break but with increased follicle inactivity coupled with premature release of the fibres from the follicles.
