Acremonium loliae is an endophytic fungus which infects plants of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), an important pasture grass in New Zealand and much of Western Europe. In New Zealand the endophyte–ryegrass association was found recently to give rise to tremorgenic substances (lolitrem A and B), which are the cause of a serious disorder of grazing and domestic livestock there. The endophyte also confers resistance in ryegrass plants to certain insect pests in New Zealand and enhances plant growth even in the absence of pests. In the present work 61 swards at 52 widespread sites in the U.K. were checked for the presence of endophyte mycelium, and it was found in 14 swards, of which 12 were at least 15 years old. ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) tests confirmed that the fungus was A. loliae. Also, lolitrem B was detected in plants from most of the sites where the mycelium was found; this appears to be the first time this tremorgen has been reported in the U.K. or perhaps in Europe. In a small-plot experiment at two sites with newly sown perennial ryegrass the endophyte appeared to have no effect on infestation by frit fly larvae, a major pest of seedling ryegrass plants. Also, in the present work, the endophyte had no measurable effect on the growth or overwinter mortality of larvae.

The objective of this study was to identify traits related to growth and yield response under drought stress in the field which would show less variation than yield itself. Experiments were conducted in 1987, at Durango, Mexico and at Michigan, USA. Twenty-six dry bean genotypes were sown under supplementary irrigation and terminal drought stress. Plant samples were taken at 50% flowering, mid-pod-filling and physiological maturity. At both sites, leaf expansion rate and crop growth rate at mid-pod-filling were greatly reduced by drought stress, resulting in significant reductions in total dry matter (DM) above ground and seed yield at physiological maturity. Because of differences in the timing and intensity of the drought stress, the yield components were affected differently at each location. Total DM content at physiological maturity, harvest index and number of pods/m2 were the only traits positively correlated with yield under stress at both locations. In order to evaluate a group of genotypes for adaptation to drought on the basis of seed yield, the genotypes should be grouped according to their phenological characteristics to stress them evenly.

Despite previous research on mycorrhizal association with plants, the data on associations with coffee (Coffea species) are very sparse despite the great economic importance of this crop for many tropical developing countries. The present paper reviews the main aspects of the association between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and coffee plants. This review includes topics on mycorrhizal effects on coffee nutritional status, pathogen–AMF interactions and responses to several environmental stresses. It also summarizes findings about the natural occurrence of AMF in different soils in which coffee is cultivated, some ecological aspects of this specific association and outlines trends for future investigations, which must elucidate the real benefits of mycorrhizae to coffee plants.

1. The effects of various starch and protein supplements on the digestibility of cellulose determined by the Norman-Jenkins technique and other constituents of the ration were studied in sheep.

2. The addition of small amounts of maize or potato starch or flaked maize to a ration of about 1 lb. of poor hay was associated with a depression in the digestibility of (Norman-Jenkins) cellulose.

3. When tested separately at varying levels, the addition of nearly pure maize protein, casein, white fishmeal, decorticated groundnut cake meal, urea or urea + DL-methionine, had no effect on the digestibility of cellulose, at any particular level of starch equivalent.

4. The digestibility of nitrogenous nutrients was depressed by the addition of maize starch or flaked maize to the ration except when urea was the nitrogen supplement. The depression was even greater when potato starch was added to the ration instead of maize starch.

5. The retention of nitrogen was not decreased by the addition of starch to the ration, although the digestibility of nitrogen-containing material was depressed. The retention was increased when starch was added to a ration containing casein.

6. The retention of nitrogen was poor from rations containing urea and starch, but it was slightly improved by the supplementation with 1 g. DL-methionine per day.

7. The addition of the various supplements had no marked effect on the digestibility of the dry matter or ‘other nutrients’ of the ration.

8. It is suggested that the growth of the microorganisms digesting cellulose in the rumen is not dependent on the supplementary feed nitrogen when the substrate they are digesting contains a reasonable amount of nitrogen. This amount appears to be about 1%.

9. The addition of vitamins of the B-complex to a daily ration of 1100 g. of hay did not affect the digestibility of the dry matter or nitrogencontaining substances or the retention of nitrogen by sheep.

Main-stem apical development and its inter-relations with other aspects of plant morphology were studied in seven field crops of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Maris Huntsman).

Apical primordia were produced slowly in autumn and winter, then faster in spring as the weather became warmer. Spikelets were initiated about three times as fast as leaves. Leaf initiation ended at around the time that tiller bud initiation stopped. Apical dome length and diameter both increased during leaf initiation, reached a maximum at double ridges and then decreased. Double ridges appeared when very nearly 50% (range 49–52%) of the final number of spikelets was present. Spikelet initiation ended a few days after the first florets were initiated and when stem extension began, but usually before the stem apex rose above the soil. Floret initiation finished at about the time that the flag leaf appeared. Throughout tillering there was a strong association between tiller emergence and leaf appearance.

There were considerable differences between seasons in the timing of developmental events on the apices of main stems, but a difference in sowing date of 5 months was reduced to little more than 1 month in the timing of anthesis and the maximum numbers of organs varied only slightly with sowing date.

The present study is focused on the potential occurrence of the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata, Say 1824), an important potato pest, and the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis, Hübner 1796), the most important maize pest, during climate change. Estimates of the current potential distribution of both pest species as well as their distribution in the expected climate conditions are based on the CLIMEX model. The study covers central Europe, including Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and parts of Germany, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, Ukraine, Slovenia, the northern parts of Serbia, parts of Croatia and northern Italy. The validated model of the pests’ geographical distribution was applied within the domain of the regional climate model (RCM) ALADIN, at a resolution of 10 km. The weather series that was the input for the CLIMEX model was prepared by a weather generator (WG) which was calibrated with the RCM-simulated weather series (for the period of 1961–90). To generate a weather series for two future time periods (2021–50 and 2071–2100), the WG parameters were modified according to 12 climate change scenarios produced by the pattern scaling method. The standardized scenarios derived from three global climate models (HadCM, NCAR-PCM and ECHAM) were scaled by low, middle and high values of global temperature change estimated by the Model for the Assessment of Greenhouse-gas Induced Climate Change (MAGICC) model (assuming three combinations of climatic sensitivity and emission scenarios). The results of present study suggest the likely widening of the pests’ habitats and an increase in the number of generations per year. According to the HadCM-high scenario, the area of arable land affected by a third generation per season of Colorado potato beetle in 2050 is c. 45% higher, and by a second generation of the European corn borer is nearly 61% higher, compared to present levels.

The percentage (P) of incident photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) reaching the ground was measured in winter wheat crops throughout the season, and related to projected area index (L) of leaves, plus sheaths and stems when present. Between unfolding of the first leaf and appearance of the flag leaf the mean value for the exponential extinction coefficient (K) was 0·46±0·007. The value did not vary with the growth stage of the wheat and was scarcely affected by experimental treatments, apart from effects resulting from the presence of senescent tissues that intercepted light but whose area was not included in L. After anthesis, in crops having between 340 and 540 ears/m2, between 68 and 89% of incident PAR penetrated to below the ears. Relation between the further penetration to the base of the crop canopy and the area of green plus senescent leaf and stem tissue gave K = 0·50. The relation did not change significantly between anthesis and complete senescence.

The relation between P and L was similar whether P was obtained from instantaneous measurements made near midday, 24 h integrals of PAR or percentage ground cover measured photographically.

Intensive dairy farming with low N use efficiencies may have adverse environmental impact through nitrate leaching. The residual effects of six different temporary grasslands (1994–96) on yield and nitrate leaching in the following cereal crops (1997–99) were investigated on a loamy sand in central Jutland. The grasslands were unfertilized grass–clover and fertilized ryegrass subject to cutting or continuous grazing by dairy cows with two levels of N in feed supplements. In the first year there was sufficient residual effect of the grazed grasslands to obviate the need for supplementary fertilizer, but in the following years gradually more fertilizer N was required to obtain optimal yields. Nitrate leaching decreased as a function of time after cultivation of grassland, but grassland management had little effect on the subsequent nitrate leaching (6 to 36 kg N/ha in unfertilized plots). Application of cattle slurry to cereals influenced nitrate leaching more than the history of the grassland and caused the annual mean nitrate concentration to exceed the EU Drinking Water Directive upper limit in most cases. Presumably, large differences in N-input during the grassland phase of the crop rotation had relatively little effect on the subsequent N release because of variable N losses during grazing. Possibilities for further improvement of the utilization of grassland N following cultivation are limited when the current knowledge has been implemented. If the N use efficiency of dairy farming systems is to be further improved the utilization of N during the pasture phase is crucial.

Drought represents one of the major constraints on agricultural productivity and food security and in future is destined to spread widely as a consequence of climate change. Research efforts are focused on developing strategies to make crops more resilient and to mitigate the effects of stress on crop production. In this context, the use of root-associated microbial communities and chemical priming strategies able to improve plant tolerance to abiotic stresses, including drought, have attracted increasing attention in recent years. The current review offers an overview of recent research aimed at verifying the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and chemical agents to improve plant tolerance to drought and to highlight the mechanisms involved in this improvement. Attention will be devoted mainly to current knowledge on the mechanisms involved in water transport.

The live-weight gains of male and female lambs were measured during growth from 16 to 40 kg live weight when five cereal-based diets varying in dietary crude protein concentration (from 10 to 20%) were given at three levels in a 5×3×2 factorial design.

Males grew faster than females by about 15% (P < 0·001); this difference increased with age and with the amount of feed given (P < 0·05). Growth rate responded linearly to increase in feeding level (P < 0·001) and curvilinearly to increase in dietary protein concentration (P < 0·01). A significant interaction (P < 0·01) occurred whereby growth increased with higher protein concentrations as feeding level increased.

At the highest feeding level (near ad libitum) the results suggest that the optimum dietary crude protein concentration for growth was about 17·5, 15·0, 12·5 and 12·5% at body weights of 20, 25, 30 and 35 kg respectively. The overall optimum dietary crude protein concentration for growth between 16 and 40 kg body weight was about 17·0, 15·0 and 11·0% when the mean digestible energy intake was 3·0, 2·6 and 2·1 Mcal/day.

The results agree reasonably well with estimates of protein requirements for lambs given by the Agricultural Research Council (1965).

1. The carcass composition, the composition and characteristics of the subcutaneous and longissimus dorsi muscle fats, the volatile fatty acids of the rumen-reticulum fluid and the degree of flavour and odour of the cooked 12th rib chops of two groups each of fifteen Southdown–Romney cross ewe and wether lambs fed respectively white clover and perennial ryegrass have been determined. The lambs had been on treatment for 5 months and were slaughtered when about 9 months of age.

2. The white clover-fed lambs had a mean live weight at slaughter of 94 lb ± 9 lb compared with 67 lb ± 7 lb for the perennial ryegrass-fed lambs. The carcasses of the white clover-fed lambs had greater (P < 0·01) amounts of fat.

3. The iodine values of the subcutaneous fats of the white clover-fed lambs were highly significantly greater than those of the ryegrass-fed lambs and this result was consistent with the greater deposition of endogenous fat.

4. The extra fatness of the white clover-fed lambs was consistent with their greater production of rumen-reticulum volatile fatty acids.

5. The maj or differences in fatty acid composition of subcutaneous and intramuscular fats between pasture treatments were the highly significant increases in shorter-chain saturated and C15 branched-chain acids of the ryegrass-fed lambs. In addition, the subcutaneous fat of the ryegrass group contained highly significantly more octadecadienoic and octadecatrienoic acids while the 1. dorsi fat of the ryegrass group was highly significantly richer in stearic and oleic acids.

Equations to predict the leaching of nitrate either uniformly incorporated to a known depth or uniformly distributed in field soils can be reduced to the approximate form:

where f is the fraction of nitrate leached below h cm in a soil of field capacity Vm (% by volume) after P cm of drainage has passed through the profile. If nitrate is initially incorporated uniformly to a depth of w cm, then x = h – ½w(where h ≥ w); if nitrate is distributed uniformly throughout the whole profile, then x = ½h. For surface-applied nitrate x = h (Burns, 1975).

Observed mean displacements in published experiments have been compared with predictions from the equations and from equations in which the mean movement of nitrate and water are assumed equal. The new equations give better agreement with the observed data.

Influences of cultivar and environment, i.e. cultivation year and fertilizer rate, on amount of protein groups and amount and size distribution of mono- and polymeric proteins, were investigated in four sets of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The cultivars were chosen in order to obtain a high range of variation in protein concentration and gluten strength. Environmental influences on protein concentration and gluten strength were investigated, as well as relations between variation in protein concentration and gluten strength and variation in protein groups and amount and size distribution of mono- and polymeric proteins.

The results showed that cultivar and environmental influences giving rise to variation in protein concentration also gave rise to variation in most of the investigated protein components. Protein concentration was significantly positively correlated to the total amounts of glutenins and gliadins and amounts of most mono- and polymeric proteins. However, the correlation with the amount of gliadins and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)-soluble mono- and polymeric proteins were often higher than the correlation to the glutenins and the SDS-insoluble mono- and polymeric proteins. Cultivar influences giving rise to variation in gluten strength were found to influence the relation between SDS-soluble and -insoluble polymeric proteins, leading to a significant positive correlation between the gluten strength and the percentage of total unextractable polymeric protein (TUPP) in the total polymeric protein and large unextractable polymeric protein (LUPP) in the total large polymeric protein. Environmental variation in gluten strength was found to be significantly positively correlated to SDS-insoluble proteins and negatively correlated to SDS-soluble proteins. This also led to a significant positive correlation with the percentage of LUPP and/or TUPP.

Forty 6½-year-old Scottish Blackface ewes were used in an experiment to investigate the effects of low protein and low calcium (Ca) intakes during pregnancy on body composition and mineral contents. Six sheep were slaughtered at the commencement of the experiment as controls; 28 were used in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment in which semipurified diets containing 11·8 and 6·0% crude protein (CP) and 1·2 and 0·11% Ca in the dry matter were offered to maintain non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and ketone bodies in the plasma at levels comparable to those found in hill sheep in winter. All ewes were slaughtered after parturition and the carcase dissected into soft tissue and skeleton fractions. Both fractions were dissolved in HNO3 and the fat and mineral contents measured.

The effect of temperature on the heat production, of temperature-acclimatized feathered and defeathered cockerels was examined at 15, 22, 25, 29, 34 and 38 °C. The maintenance ME requirements and the net availability of ME (NAME) were determined for each temperature.

The fasting heat production of defeathered cockerels measured at 22, 29, 34 and 38 °C, decreased continually with increasing temperature. The feathered cockerels also showed a general decrease in fasting heat production with increasing temperature between 15 and 34 °C, but there were relative increases in fasting heat production between 22 and 29 °C.

The ME requirement for maintenance and the NAME were determined from measurements of heat production at different levels of ME intake. In general, the maintenance ME requirement decreased with increasing temperature for both feathered and defeathered cockerels. The NAME for the defeathered birds varied between 75 and 77% at 29, 34 and 38 °C. There was evidence for the feathered birds of an increasing NAME with increasing temperature, one feathered bird having a NAME of 56% at 15°C, increasing to 81% at 34 °C.

The importance of feathering and environmental temperature on the heat production and the possible effect of feather cover and activity on the NAME are discussed.

N fixation data, estimated by the acetylene reduction technique and by total N content are given for the field experiments reported by Sprent, Bradford & Norton (1977).

Maximum potential acetylene reducing activity per plant varied little from year to year. At low population densities a maximum rate of activity was observed shortly after flowering. As density increased this maximum became less pronounced and environmental factors (such as water supply) exerted increasing effects on activity. Shading prolonged activity and delayed nodule senescence.

Total plant N continued to increase almost to seed maturation. As plants aged, the acetylene reduction technique progressively underestimated N accumulation. Maximum Nfixed/ha/year was over 600 kg. Itis concluded that the potential for N fixation in this crop is sufficient to sustain high yields.

The yield stability of intercropping systems is important in developing cropping systems that produce economic yields over a wide range of environments. Field studies were conducted during the 1997/98 and 1998/99 growing seasons at three locations in the forest and forest–savannah transition zones of Ghana to determine yield, land use efficiency and yield stability of cassava (Manihot esculenta), maize (Zea mays), soya bean (Glycine max) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) intercrop systems. The cropping systems consisted of a factorial combination of two cassava varieties: ‘Gblemoduade’ (an improved, highly branched variety) and ‘Ankra’ (a local variety with fewer branches) and three spatial arrangements. Cowpea rows were planted in the minor season into cassava as a successive crop to maize and soya bean after their harvest in the major season. Intercropping significantly reduced grain or tuber yield of maize, cassava ‘Gblemoduade’ and cassava ‘Ankra’ by 23–70%, 16–49% and 24–64%, respectively. Maize yield decreased with increased number of soya bean rows. ‘Gblemoduade’ outyielded ‘Ankra’ by more than 100% under both intercrop and sole crop. The yield of soya bean increased with increased number of soya bean rows, but did not differ in response to the cassava variety. However, cowpea yield was higher when intercropped with ‘Ankra’ than with ‘Gblemoduade’. The intercrops had higher land use ratios (LER=1·27–2·83) and were more stable than the sole crops. Intercrops involving ‘Ankra’ had higher LER (2·14–2·18) than systems with ‘Gblemoduade’ (LER=1·83–1·99), but their yield stabilities were similar.

The growth and development of two early (Pusa ageti and T-21) and three mediumduration (ST-1, ICP-1 and HY-3C) cultivars of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) were compared at Hyderabad, India, in 1974 and 1975; in 1976 cv. ICP-1 was studied. The pigeonpeas were grown on a Vertisol and on an Alfisol. The crop growth rate in the first 2 months was low. The maximum rate of 171 kg/ha/day was found in the fourth month of growth of cv. ICP-1 on Alfisol. The early cultivars, one of which (cv. Pusa ageti) was morphologically determinate, and the other (cv. T-21) indeterminate, did not differ in the proportion of dry matter partitioned into seeds. The mean dry weight of the ab ove-ground parts of the medium cultivars on Vertisol in 1975 was 8·45 t/ha, including 2·23 t/ha of fallen plant material. The mean harvest index (ratio of grain dry weight to total plant dry weight) of these cultivars was 0·24 excluding fallen material and 0·17 taking fallen material into account. Starch reserves were present in the stems during the vegetative phase, but disappeared during the reproductive phase. In 1974 the maximum leaf-area index on Vertisol was 3 and on Alfisol 12·7. The net assimilation rate tended to decline throughout the growth period, but in the medium cultivars increased at the end of the reproductive phase, probably because of photosynthesis in pod walls and stems.

In 1974 and 1975 the growth of roots and distribution of nodules in Vertisol was investigated by means of soil cores. Roots extended below 150 cm and root growth continued during the reproductive phase. Most nodules were found within the first 30 cm of soil, but some were found below 120 cm. In cv. T-21, grown in brick chambers150 cm deep, at the time of harvest about three-quarters of the mass of the roots was found in the first 30 cm, and the shoot:root ratio was around 4:1.

In 1975 the mean uptake of nitrogen by the medium cultivars on Vertisol was 120 kg/ha, including 34 kg/ha in fallen material. In 1976 the uptake of nitrogen by cv. ICP-1 was 89 kg/ha on Vertisol and 79 kg/ha on Alfisol, including 32 and 23 kg/ha respectively in fallen material. Nitrogen uptake continued throughout the growing period. The percentage of nitrogen in stems and leaves declined as the plants developed and there was a net remobilization of nitrogen from these organs. The pattern of uptake and remobilization of phosphorus resembled that of nitrogen. In 1976 the total uptake of phosphorus by cv. ICP-1 on Vertisol was 5·8 kg/ha and on Alfisol 5·0 kg/a.

The relatively low yields of pigeonpeas result from a restricted partitioning of dry matter into pods, which may be related to the plants' perennial nature.

Seventy-five maiden Border Leicester × Merino ewes were divided into three treatment groups of 25: 1N, injected with PMSG on day 13 of a natural oestrous cycle in autumn (May); 1S, injected with PMSG on withdrawal of a progestagen sponge inserted for 13 days in autumn; 2S, treated as 1S but in spring (November). Five ewes in each treatment received each of 0, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 i.u. PMSG (dose, D). From 16 h after PMSG injection until oestrus, detected by entire rams, all ewes were bled from the jugular vein at 4 h intervals and plasma oestradiol-17β (E2) concentrations measured by radioimmunoassay. Time to onset of oestrus was recorded. Samples for estimation of plasma progesterone were taken on days 6 and 13 of the subsequent oestrous cycle. The ewes were laparotomized on day 5 or 6 of the cycle and all active corpora lutea, cystic follicles > 8 mm (most of which were luteinized) and follicles > 5 mm in diameter were recorded; the sum of these was taken as the total follicular stimulation at oestrus.

There were significant (P < 0·001) linear dose-responses to PMSG in terms of corpora lutea, total follicular development, progesterone, and E2. The covariance of E2 on total follicles was significant (P < 0·001). Progesterone concentrations were more highly correlated with the sum of corpora lutea and cystic follicles than with corporalutea alone (τ = 0·80 ν 0·73, both with 73 D.F.; P < 0·001). The time to onset of oestrus for treatment 1N ewes was highly variable due to the relative asynchrony of the time of PMSG injection but, when treatments 1S and 2S were analysed together, there were significant linear (P < 0·001) and quadratic (P < 0·01) effects of dose of PMSG, resulting in a decrease of 14 h in time to onset between the 0 and 1600 i.u. treatments. The covariance with E2 was significant (P < 0·05).

There was no difference between treatments in total follicular development but the number of corpora lutea was less (P < 0·05) in treatment 1N ewes than in the two sponge treatments (1S and 2S), again reflecting the asynchrony of treatment. There was no difference in progesterone concentration between treatments, but peak E2 was significantly less (P < 0·05) in treatment 2S (spring) than in 1N and 1S (autumn). Since there was no difference in the numbers of follicles which developed it appears that follicles in spring-treated ewes secreted oestrogen less intensively than in autumn. The lower oestrogen concentration was associated with a longer interval to onset of oestrus; linear regressions of time on dose PMSG (reciprocal) for treatments 1S and 2S separately had a common slope but significantly different intercepts (P < 0·01), so that oestrus was delayed by a mean of 6·4 h at all PMSG doses in spring compared with autumn.

Of the 73 ewes alive at lambing, 48 (66%) lambed producing 69 lambs. There was no significant effect of treatment on percentage of ewes which lambed but the lambing rate of those ewes with large numbers of ovulations (7–14) tended to be lower than that of the remainder (P ≃ 0·1). Of the nine ewes in this category, only four lambed and failure to lamb was significantly associated with excessively high plasma E2 (P < 0·05).

Italian rye-grass given ammonium sulphate or sodium nitrate at 56 or 112 lb. N/acre was analysed for total nitrogen, soluble nitrogen (non-protein-nitrogen) and soluble carbohydrates.

Ten days after applying fertilizer the differences in total-N between the grass receiving 56 and grass receiving 112 lb. N/acre were very small. Total-N in grass decreased with growth, but the effect of the rate of nitrogen on total-N increased. At first the grass given sodium nitrate contained more soluble nitrogen than grass given ammonium sulphate, the difference being greater at 56 lb. N/acre; soluble nitrogen decreased with increasing growth. Ten days after applying fertilizer, the nitrate-N content of grass was very high (ranging from 0·1 to 0·9% in the D.M.) and it gradually decreased. At both levels of nitrogen application, grass given sodium nitrate contained much more nitrate-N than grass given ammonium sulphate. Forty days after applying nitrogen the nitrate-N contents of grass which received 56 and 112 1b. N/acre as ammonium sulphate were 0·039 and 0·222% of the dry matter, respectively; the grass supplied with sodium nitrate gave values of 0·082 and 0·438%.

Total soluble carbohydrates in the grass were small early in growth and gradually increased. Nitrogen dressings had little effect on the content of soluble sugars (glucose + fructose + sucrose) but greatly decreased the fructosan. The pattern of changes in the total soluble carbohydrate content followed that in fructosan content. Early in growth, the total soluble carbohydrate/crude protein ratio was very small in grass from all treatments except the ‘control’. This ratio increased with growth and at the last sampling was 2·13 in grass receiving no nitrogen, and in grass supplied with 56 and 112 lb. N/acre as ammonium sulphate it was 1·44 and 0·72 respectively; the corresponding figures for grass receiving sodium nitrate were 1·13 and 0·66. The total soluble carbohydrate carbon/soluble nitrogen ratio in grass with no nitrogen was 18 at the first sampling and it increased gradually, reaching 70 at the last sampling. This ratio was considerably less with all nitrogen treatments than with ‘control’. The values obtained with 112 lb. N/acre were less than those obtained with 561b./acre, irrespective of the form of nitrogen used.

The relationship between the soluble carbohydrate carbon content and the soluble nitrogen in grass is illustrated graphically and discussed.
