In this paper, a new dual-band Wilkinson power divider (WPD) is designed and fabricated using novel low and high impedance stubs instead of quarter-wavelength transmission lines. The proposed circuit was analyzed using odd and even mode analysis, and the optimal values of design parameters were obtained using the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The designed power divider has input reflection coefficients (S11) of −22.1 and −17 dB at the first operating frequency of 2.2 GHz and the second operating frequency of 14.2 GHz, respectively. It also improves stop-band and fractional bandwidth (FBW) while maintaining a simple topology. The proposed WPD suppresses undesired harmonics from the second to the fifth with an attenuation level of less than −20 dB in the first band and generates a broad stop-band (4.4–11.5 GHz). In the first band, the FBW is 54.5%, and in the second band, it is 20.1%.

A modified ant lion optimization (MALO) algorithm is proposed in this article, for the synthesis of Chebyshev-based arrays by optimizing amplitudes and phases of excitations, and element spacings. Modification in ant lion optimization is achieved by hybridizing it with chaotic particle swarm optimization. The optimization process is employed to obtain an array pattern with the least possible sidelobe level. Close-in sidelobe level minimization for optimum pattern synthesis is suggested. Instead of only steering the main beam towards the desired direction presented by some popular optimization methods, the beam steering along with null positioning in other specified direction is also achieved employing MALO. Considering the arrays with the same design parameters and the results of other optimization algorithms, the performance of MALO is evaluated. The results show that MALO provides considerable improvements in an array pattern compared to the arrays optimized using other optimization algorithms and the uniform array.

This article presented a compact bandpass filter with wide-stopband performance. Two substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavities and a short-circuited coplanar line introduced between the two cavities are used to realize a compact third-order bandpass filter. The passband is generated by combining the resonant frequency of TE101 mode of the SIW cavities and the fundamental resonant frequency of the short-circuited coplanar line. The size of the proposed filter reduces significantly in comparison with conventional third-order SIW filters. Moreover, the center frequency (CF) and the bandwidth of the filter can be controlled by adjusting the structural parameters of the filter. In addition, the first higher-order mode TE102 of the SIW cavity is suppressed by minimizing the coupling of TE102 mode in order to obtain wide-stopband performance. The proposed filter is designed, fabricated, and measured, and the simulation and measurement results show a good agreement. The filter exhibits compact size, low loss, and a rejection higher than 20 dB up to 1.94f0.

Atmospheric and higher pressure RF and microwave plasma sources have numerous applications including material processing and spectroscopy. More recently, advantages in using such discharges for combustion ignition are being investigated. A particularly simple and compact microwave discharge generating device is the quarter wave coaxial cavity resonator (QWCCR). This paper presents a new, compacted design of such a device. A simple approximate analysis of the quality factor, Q, which is a measure of the resonant electromagnetic potential step-up capability is given, and compared to experimentally measured quality factors showing reasonable agreement. Analytic results indicate that the foreshortened folded cavity quality factors are comparable to tapered coaxial cavity designs.

The Misell algorithm is one of the most widely used phase retrieval holography methods for large reflector antennas to measure surface deformation. However, it usually locks in a local minimum because it heads downhill from an initial estimation without any consideration whether it heads for a global minimum or not. The core problem of the Misell algorithm is to find an initial estimation near the global minimum to avoid local stagnation. To cope with the problem, we construct a hybrid Misell algorithm, named modified very fast simulated annealing (MVFSA)-Misell algorithm, to search for the global minimum with a high efficiency. The algorithm is based on the combination of the MVFSA algorithm and Misell algorithm. Firstly, the MVFSA is utilized to obtain a rough position near the global minimum in limited steps. Then, the Misell algorithm starts from the rough position to converge to the global minimum with high speed and accuracy. The convergence characteristic of the proposed algorithm was discussed in detail through digital simulation. Simulation results show that the algorithm can reach global minimum in a very short time. Unlike the traditional Misell algorithm, the hybrid algorithm is not influenced by initial phase estimation.

In this paper a dual-band bandpass filter with sharp rejection is proposed. The filter is realized by using two half-wavelength stepped impedance resonators to operate at the passbands 2.5 and 3.5 GHz. To increase the band width further to about 45 MHz at the lower passband and 115 MHz at the higher passband, interdigital capacitors are introduced between resonator and input and output combining network. Measured insertion loss is about 1.45 and 1.7 dB at first and second passbands, respectively. A finite transmission zero in between two passbands at 2.84 GHz is realized to improve the selectivity of the filter. The design procedure to get highly selective response of the proposed filter is explicitly explained. An equivalent circuit model of proposed filter is developed that matches well with measured results.

In this paper, a sandwiched type frequency selective surface (FSS) is designed and analyzed. The design procedure and operating principle is given based on the equivalent circuit model. The proposed FSS includes two identical layers of periodic metallic arrays, which are separated by a foam layer. In each layer of the periodic array, the unit cell is composed of a gridded-triple square loop structure. The FSS provides three pass-bands, in which a flat band response is presented. Three bands are separated by one or two transmission zeros, which leads to a sharp rejection on both sides of each pass-band. The central frequencies of the three pass-bands are 7.0, 10.9 and 14.0 GHz. To verify the simulated results, a prototype of the FSS is fabricated and measured. The simulated results agree well with the measured ones. This work can be used in area of a radar stealth or satellite communication system.

In this paper, we are concerned on the receiver design and the different imaging possibilities for radar multiple input multiple output (MIMO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The transmission of pseudo-orthogonal waveforms gives many opportunities in reception on how to manage these different signals. We proposed to compare different resolutions and robustness for SAR measurements: single input single output (SISO) and MIMO. Moreover, we developed different SAR processings based on MIMO configuration by using the Stolt interpolation on simulations. On real data, these SAR processing will be adapted for the backprojection processing.

A novel small-size filtering power divider (PD) featured four-function integration is proposed. These four integrated functions are high-selectivity filtering, inherent DC block, high all-frequency isolation, and high-power applications. Using single-layer planar circuit technology, this proposed PD can be implemented easily. The measured results of a prototype show that it can operate at 2 GHz with a −10 dB matching bandwidth of 6% and all-frequency −15 dB isolation.

In this paper, a super-compact ultra-wideband (UWB) metamaterial absorber (MMA) is presented. The absorber design consists of an inverted L-shaped structure and a diagonal rectangular-shaped structure. The capacitive coupling between these two structures not only provides UWB nature but also provides a super-compact absorber design. The dimension of the unit cell arrangement is 5 × 5 mm2 and printed on a low-cost FR-4 substrate of thickness 1.54 mm (0.061λlowest). The design absorber provides more than 97% absorptivity from 12 to 21 GHz for normal incidence electromagnetic (EM) wave. However, the proposed MMA has a full width at half maximum absorption bandwidth of 11.71 GHz from 10.34 to 22.05 GHz. Moreover, the surface current distributions have been analyzed to understand the absorption mechanism of the MMA. The stability of the proposed design is validated with different incident angles (for TE and TM modes) and different polarization angles. Finally, the absorber design is fabricated and verified experimentally. Furthermore, the UWB frequency range, high absorption, ease in design and fabrication, and cost-effective make it suitable for different quality applications in stealth technology, thermal imaging, radar detection, antenna systems, and other EM devices.

In this paper, a microstrip-fed U-shaped dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is simulated, designed, and fabricated. This antenna, in its simple configuration, operates from 5.45 to 10.8 GHz. To enhance its impedance bandwidth, the ground plane is first modified, which leads to an extended bandwidth from 4 to 10.8 GHz. Then by inserting a rectangular metallic patch inside the U-shaped DRA, the bandwidth is increased more to achieve an operating band from 2.65 to 10.9 GHz. To validate these results, an experimental antenna prototype is fabricated and measured. The obtained measurement results show that the proposed antenna can provide an ultra-wide bandwidth and a symmetric bidirectional radiation patterns. With these features, the proposed antenna is suitable for ultra-wideband applications.

In this paper, a new path-loss model for electromagnetic wave in an indoor multipath environment is proposed based on matching coefficient, polarization matching factor, and normalized field intensity direction function. This model is called the Friis-extension (Friis-EXT) model, because it operates as the Friis model under certain conditions. In addition, in the modeling process of the path-loss in an indoor environment, the reflective surfaces in the environment and form of the antenna are considered. Afterwards, the path-loss data in an indoor corridor environment are measured, and the maximum error between the theoretical value and the measured data is <7.5 dB. Finally, the Friis-EXT model is compared with some other traditional models, and the results show that the Friis-EXT model is the best one that matches the measurement data.

The aim of the present paper is to highlight the possible benefits coming from the use of the GaN high electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) technology in the Doherty power amplifier (DPA) architecture. In particular, the attention is focused on the capabilities and the relevant drawbacks of a GaN HEMT technology when designing DPAs. A deep discussion of the DPA's design guidelines is also presented through the realization of three prototypes implementing different design solutions and working at 2.14 GHz. The first example is a tuned load DPA (TL-DPA), which show an average drain efficiency of 40.7% with 3 W of saturated output power in the obtained 6 dB of output back-off. The second DPA was designed implementing a class F harmonic termination for the main device, which allows an improvement of roughly 15% in output power and efficiency behavior with respect to the TL-DPA. The last DPA was realized implementing a single output matching network for both main and auxiliary devices, which allows a relevant reduction in the size of the resulting DPA, without downgrading the overall performances.

A novel topology for millimeter-wave-integrated transformers is proposed. The windings are stacked and secondaries are designed with different trace widths and different diameters from that of the primary, in order to obtain relatively high-inductance transformation ratios. Measurement and simulation results of 65 nm Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) and 130 nm combination of Bipolar and CMOS (BiCMOS) transformers present the impact of this structure on the inductances, quality factor, coupling coefficient, and minimum insertion loss. Within certain limits on the trace widths, it is shown that the proposed topology not only increases the transformation ratio but also improves its overall performance.

A wide-stopband bandpass-filtering power divider with high-frequency selectivity has been proposed in this paper. The input and output feeding lines and eight 1/4 wavelength resonators are used to realize the signal transmission. In order to obtain good frequency selectivity, source-load coupling transmission path is used to generate transmission zeros near the passband. A four-way power divider with bandpass-filtering response and high-frequency selectivity is designed, fabricated, and measured. The measured results agree with the simulated ones closely in the desirable frequency range. The measured center frequency of the power divider is 2.38 GHz with input return loss of 31.2 dB, while the measured insertion loss is about 1 dB (not including ideal 6 dB four-way power dividing insertion loss). Moreover, the measured 3-dB bandwidth is 12% and the measured stopband attenuation is >15 dB from 2.59 to 7.7 GHz. In addition, two transmission zeros of 1.9 and 2.8 GHz are located near the passband. The measured output isolations are all >15.7 dB.

In this paper, the design of thinned planar antenna arrays of isotropic radiators with optimum side lobe level reduction is studied. The teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO) method, a newly proposed global evolutionary optimization method, is used to determine an optimum set of turned-ON elements of thinned planar antenna arrays that provides a radiation pattern with optimum side lobe level reduction. The TLBO represents a new algorithm for optimization problems in antenna arrays design. It is shown that the TLBO provides results that are better than (or the same as) those obtained using other evolutionary algorithms.

In this paper, we present a linear to circular polarization converter integrated in a concrete structure to eliminate signal transmission problem originated from the concrete buildings in microwave regime. Two polarization converter samples and a control specimen made by traditional concrete are designed and their signal transmission responses are compared experimentally. Axial ratio values which can be calculated by the ratio between the co-polar transmission and cross-polar transmission results of the proposed samples are below 3 dB and highly sufficient for linear to circular polarization conversion activity. The operating frequency for the proposed sample 1 is between 6 and 6.5 GHz with 500 MHz of bandwidth. The proposed sample 2 exhibits dual-band operation covering frequency bands, 4.58–5.13 and 6.0–6.4 GHz with bandwidths of 550 and 400 MHz, respectively. Operating frequencies of the samples are in the WIMAX frequency bands. In addition, the liner to circular polarization converter design integrated to concrete has a huge potential to improve reflection and directivity parameters of many antennas if it is considered as a radome.

This paper discusses the design steps and experimental characterization of a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) power amplifier developed for the next generation of K-band 17.3–20.2 GHz very high throughput satellites. The technology used is a commercially available 100-nm gate length gallium nitride on silicon process. The chip was developed taking into account the demanding constraints of the spacecraft and, in particular, carefully considering the thermal constraints of such technology, in order to keep the junction temperature in all devices below 160°C in the worst-case condition (i.e., maximum environmental temperature of 85°C). The realized MMIC, based on a three-stage architecture, was first characterized on-wafer in pulsed regime and, subsequently, mounted in a test-jig and characterized under continuous wave operating conditions. In 17.3–20.2 GHz operating bandwidth, the built amplifier provides an output power >40 dBm with a power added efficiency close to 30% (peak >40%) and 22 dB of power gain.

Electromagnetic inverse-scattering problems (ISPs) are concerned with determining the properties of an unknown object using measured scattered fields. ISPs are often highly nonlinear, causing the problem to be very difficult to address. In addition, the reconstruction images of different optimization methods are distorted which leads to inaccurate reconstruction results. To alleviate these issues, we propose a new linear model solution of generative adversarial network-based (LM-GAN) inspired by generative adversarial networks (GAN). Two sub-networks are trained alternately in the adversarial framework. A linear deep iterative network as a generative network captures the spatial distribution of the data, and a discriminative network estimates the probability of a sample from the training data. Numerical results validate that LM-GAN has admirable fidelity and accuracy when reconstructing complex scatterers.

In this work, an UWB/narrow band reconfigurable elliptical-shaped monopole antenna for cognitive radio applications with sequential perception and operation modes is presented. The proposed approach consists in integrating a reconfigurable filter, in an UWB antenna ground plan, by the mean of four horizontal slots and integrated switches that allow inserting/removing/varying zeros and poles in the frequency response. By acting on the slot lengths in order to alter their resonance frequencies, the different switch configurations allow the antenna to switch between an UWB mode that could be used for the perception (sensing) and different narrowband modes, mono-band and dual-band, that could be used for the operation at 2.4 or/and 3.5 GHz. To validate the concept, an experimental prototype has been fabricated and a good agreement between the simulated and the measured S-parameters has been obtained. While the presented work uses the presence/absence of a perfect conductive strip (PEC) to model real switch operation, it is believed that the obtained results conjugated with previous work using real switches on a very similar structure allows validating approach.
