Let c(G) be the smallest number of edges we have to test in order to determine an unknown acyclic orientation of the given graph G in the worst case. For example, if G is the complete graph on n vertices, then c(G) is the smallest number of comparisons needed to sort n numbers.

We prove that c(G) ≤ (1/4 + o(1))n2 for any graph G on n vertices, answering in the affirmative a question of Aigner, Triesch and Tuza [Discrete Mathematics144 (1995) 3–10]. Also, we show that, for every ϵ > 0, it is NP-hard to approximate the parameter c(G) within a multiplicative factor 74/73 − ϵ.

We present an elementary proof that if $A$ is a finite set of numbers, and the sumset $A+_GA$ is small, $|A+_GA|\leq c|A|$, along a dense graph $G$, then $A$ contains $k$-term arithmetic progressions.

We prove that for all $\alpha,c>0$ and for all bipartite graphs $H$, all but at most $\alpha n$ vertices of every $cn$-regular graph $G$ whose order $n$ is sufficiently large can be covered by vertex-disjoint copies of $H$. If the vertex classes of $H$ have different size, then even all but a constant number of vertices of $G$ can be covered. This implies that for all $c>0$ and all $r\geq 4$ there exists a constant $C$ such that, in every $cn$-regular graph $G$, all but at most $C$ vertices can be covered by vertex-disjoint subdivisions of $K_r$. We also show that for $r=4,5$ one can take $C=0$.

We investigate a graph function which is related to the local density, the maximal cut and the least eigenvalue of a graph. In particular it enables us to prove the following assertions.

Let p [ges ] 3 be an integer, c ∈ (0, 1/2) and G be a Kp-free graph on n vertices with e [les ] cn2 edges. There exists a positive constant α = α (c, p) such that:

(a) some [lfloor ]n/2[rfloor ]-subset of V (G) induces at most (c-4 − α) n2 edges (this answers a question of Paul Erdős);

(b) G can be made bipartite by the omission of at most (c-2 − α) n2 edges.

We consider the problem of reorienting an oriented matroid so that all its cocircuits are ‘as balanced as possible in ratio’. It is well known that any oriented matroid having no coloops has a totally cyclic reorientation, a reorientation in which every signed cocircuit $B = \{B^+, B^-\}$ satisfies $B^+, B^- \neq \emptyset$. We show that, for some reorientation, every signed cocircuit satisfies \[1/f(r) \leq |B^+|/|B^-| \leq f(r)\], where $f(r) \leq 14\,r^2\ln(r)$, and $r$ is the rank of the oriented matroid.

In geometry, this problem corresponds to bounding the discrepancies (in ratio) that occur among the Radon partitions of a dependent set of vectors. For graphs, this result corresponds to bounding the chromatic number of a connected graph by a function of its Betti number (corank) $|E|-|V|+1$.

Let k ⩾ 2 be an integer. We show that if s = 2 and t ⩾ 2, or s = t = 3, then the maximum possible number of edges in a C2k+1-free graph containing no induced copy of Ks,t is asymptotically equal to (t − s + 1)1/s(n/2)2−1/s except when k = s = t = 2.

This strengthens a result of Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte [1], and answers a question of Loh, Tait, Timmons and Zhou [14].

Whereas the cylindrical version of an Eden cluster in the plane has a surface roughness with a fractal dimension predicted by theory, the central version has hitherto seemed to conflict with theory. However, a fresh way of analysing computer simulations of the central version shows that this anomaly is more apparent than real, and the central version can thereby be reconciled with theory. As a by-product, we obtain statistical data on the properties of the central version in the plane. The macroscopic shape of a central cluster is not circular, and microscopic roughness depends weakly upon the angular direction of portions of the surface. Rather surprisingly, the edge method of construction gives a more nearly circular shape than the external and internal methods. For higher dimensions than the plane, the corresponding treatment is more difficult, and there the situation remains obscure. Higher dimensions and certain other clusters (e.g. Richardson clusters) are treated briefly in Section 6. The theory of surface roughness uses a spatial generalization of martingales, called a serial harness: this is also described in Section 6.

We consider the problem of broadcasting in an n–node hypercube whose links and nodes fail independently with given probabilities p < 1 and q < 1, respectively. Information held in a fault-free node, called the source, has to reach all other fault-free nodes. Messages may be directly transmitted to adjacent nodes only, and every node may communicate with at most one neighbour in a unit of time. A message can be transmitted only if both communicating neighbours and the link joining them are fault-free. For parameters p and q satisfying (1 – p)(1 – q) ≽ 0.99 (e.g. p = q = 0.5%), we give an algorithm working in time O(log n) and broadcasting source information to all fault-free nodes with probability exceeding 1 – cn-e for some positive constant ε, c depending on p and q but not depending on n.

A rule for shuffling an infinite deck of cards is considered where at each time step the first and jth card are interchanged with probability pj. Conditions are given under which this shuffling scheme, considered as a Markov chain on the space of permutations of integers, is recurrent or transient.

In [9, p. 469], Oxley made the following conjecture, which is a geometric analogue of a conjecture of Lovász (see [1, p. 290]) about complete graphs.

Conjecture 1.1.Let G be a rank-n GF(q)-representable simple matroid with critical exponent n − γ. If, for every coline X in G, c(G/X; q) = c(G; q) − 2 = n − γ − 2, then G is the projective geometry PG(n − 1, q).

We shall call the rank n, the critical ‘co-exponent’ γ, and the order q of the field the parameters of Oxley's conjecture. We exhibit several counterexamples to this conjecture. These examples show that, for a given prime power q and a given positive integer γ, Oxley's conjecture holds for only finitely many ranks n. We shall assume familiarity with matroid theory and, in particular, the theory of critical problems. See [6] and [9].

A subset C of points of PG(n − 1, q) is a (γ, k)-cordon if, for every k-codimensional subspace X in PG(n − 1, q), the intersection C ∩ X contains a γ-dimensional subspace of PG(n − 1, q). In this paper, our primary interest will be in constructing (γ, 2)-cordons. With straightforward modifications, our methods will also yield (γ, k)-cordons.

Complements of counterexamples to Oxley's conjecture are (γ, 2)-cordons.

Bounded-size rules (BSRs) are dynamic random graph processes which incorporate limited choice along with randomness in the evolution of the system. Typically one starts with the empty graph and at each stage two edges are chosen uniformly at random. One of the two edges is then placed into the system according to a decision rule based on the sizes of the components containing the four vertices. For bounded-size rules, all components of size greater than some fixed K ≥ 1 are accorded the same treatment. Writing BSR(t) for the state of the system with ⌊nt/2⌋ edges, Spencer and Wormald [26] proved that for such rules, there exists a (rule-dependent) critical time tc such that when t < tc the size of the largest component is of order log n, while for t > tc, the size of the largest component is of order n. In this work we obtain upper bounds (that hold with high probability) of order n2γ log4n, on the size of the largest component, at time instants tn = tc−n−γ, where γ ∈ (0,1/4). This result for the barely subcritical regime forms a key ingredient in the study undertaken in [4], of the asymptotic dynamic behaviour of the process describing the vector of component sizes and associated complexity of the components for such random graph models in the critical scaling window. The proof uses a coupling of BSR processes with a certain family of inhomogeneous random graphs with vertices in the type space $\mathbb{R}_+\times \mathcal{D}([0,\infty):\mathbb{N}_0)$, where $\mathcal{D}([0,\infty):\mathbb{N}_0)$ is the Skorokhod D-space of functions that are right continuous and have left limits, with values in the space of non-negative integers $\mathbb{N}_0$, equipped with the usual Skorokhod topology. The coupling construction also gives an alternative characterization (from the usual explosion time of the susceptibility function) of the critical time tc for the emergence of the giant component in terms of the operator norm of integral operators on certain L2 spaces.

We study semirandom k-colourable graphs made up as follows. Partition the vertex set V = {1, . . ., n} randomly into k classes V1, . . ., Vk of equal size and include each Vi–Vj-edge with probability p independently (1 ≤ i < j ≤ k) to obtain a graph G0. Then, an adversary may add further Vi–Vj-edges (i≠j) to G0, thereby completing the semirandom graph G = G*n,p,k. We show that if np ≥ max{(1 + ϵ)klnn, C0k2} for a certain constant C0>0 and an arbitrarily small but constant ϵ>0, an optimal colouring of G*n,p,k can be found in polynomial time with high probability. Furthermore, if np ≥ C0max{klnn, k2}, a k-colouring of G*n,p,k can be computed in polynomial expected time. Moreover, an optimal colouring of G*n,p,k can be computed in expected polynomial time if k ≤ ln1/3n and np ≥ C0klnn. By contrast, it is NP-hard to k-colour G*n,p,k With high probability if .

Given a finite subset A of an abelian group G, we study the set k ∧ A of all sums of k distinct elements of A. In this paper, we prove that |k ∧ A| ≥ |A| for all k ∈ {2,. . .,|A| − 2}, unless k ∈ {2, |A| − 2} and A is a coset of an elementary 2-subgroup of G. Furthermore, we characterize those finite sets A ⊆ G for which |k ∧ A| = |A| for some k ∈ {2,. . .,|A| − 2}. This result answers a question of Diderrich. Our proof relies on an elementary property of proper edge-colourings of the complete graph.

For an integer q ⩾ 2, a graph G is called q-Ramsey for a graph H if every q-colouring of the edges of G contains a monochromatic copy of H. If G is q-Ramsey for H yet no proper subgraph of G has this property, then G is called q-Ramsey-minimal for H. Generalizing a statement by Burr, Nešetřil and Rödl from 1977, we prove that, for q ⩾ 3, if G is a graph that is not q-Ramsey for some graph H, then G is contained as an induced subgraph in an infinite number of q-Ramsey-minimal graphs for H as long as H is 3-connected or isomorphic to the triangle. For such H, the following are some consequences.

• For 2 ⩽ r < q, every r-Ramsey-minimal graph for H is contained as an induced subgraph in an infinite number of q-Ramsey-minimal graphs for H.

• For every q ⩾ 3, there are q-Ramsey-minimal graphs for H of arbitrarily large maximum degree, genus and chromatic number.

• The collection $\{\mathcal M_q(H) \colon H \text{ is 3-connected or } K_3\}$ forms an antichain with respect to the subset relation, where $\mathcal M_q(H)$ denotes the set of all graphs that are q-Ramsey-minimal for H.

We also address the question of which pairs of graphs satisfy $\mathcal M_q(H_1)=\mathcal M_q(H_2)$ , in which case H1 and H2 are called q-equivalent. We show that two graphs H1 and H2 are q-equivalent for even q if they are 2-equivalent, and that in general q-equivalence for some q ⩾ 3 does not necessarily imply 2-equivalence. Finally we indicate that for connected graphs this implication may hold: results by Nešetřil and Rödl and by Fox, Grinshpun, Liebenau, Person and Szabó imply that the complete graph is not 2-equivalent to any other connected graph. We prove that this is the case for an arbitrary number of colours.

We study distance properties of a general class of random directed acyclic graphs (dags). In a dag, many natural notions of distance are possible, for there exist multiple paths between pairs of nodes. The distance of interest for circuits is the maximum length of a path between two nodes. We give laws of large numbers for the typical depth (distance to the root) and the minimum depth in a random dag. This completes the study of natural distances in random dags initiated (in the uniform case) by Devroye and Janson. We also obtain large deviation bounds for the minimum of a branching random walk with constant branching, which can be seen as a simplified version of our main result.

A graph G is quasi 4-connected if it is simple, 3-connected, has at least five vertices, and for every partition (A, B, C) of V(G) either [mid ]C[mid ] [ges ] 4, or G has an edge with one end in A and the other end in B, or one of A,B has at most one vertex. We show that any quasi 4-connected nonplanar graph with minimum degree at least three and no cycle of length less than five has a minor isomorphic to P−10, the Petersen graph with one edge deleted. We deduce the following weakening of Tutte's Four Flow Conjecture: every 2-edge-connected graph with no minor isomorphic to P−10 has a nowhere-zero 4-flow. This extends a result of Kilakos and Shepherd who proved the same for 3-regular graphs.

In this paper, we show for generalized $M$-ary search trees that the Steiner distance of $p$ randomly chosen nodes in random search trees is asymptotically normally distributed. The special case $p=2$ shows, in particular, that the distribution of the distance between two randomly chosen nodes is asymptotically Gaussian. In the presented generating functions approach, we consider first the size of the ancestor-tree of $p$ randomly chosen nodes. From the obtained Gaussian limiting distribution for this parameter, we deduce the result for the Steiner distance. Since the size of the ancestor-tree is essentially the same as the number of passes in the (generalized) Multiple Quickselect algorithm, the limiting distribution result also holds for this parameter.

Both the hopcount HN (the number of links) and the weight WN (the sum of the weights on links) of the shortest path between two arbitrary nodes in the complete graph KN with i.i.d. exponential link weights is computed. We consider the joint distribution of the pair (HN, WN) and derive, after proper scaling, the joint limiting distribution. One of the results is that HN and WN, properly scaled, are asymptotically independent.

We formulate and give partial answers to several combinatorial problems on volumes of simplices determined by n points in 3-space, and in general in d dimensions.

1. (i) The number of tetrahedra of minimum (non-zero) volume spanned by n points in 3 is at most , and there are point sets for which this number is . We also present an O(n3) time algorithm for reporting all tetrahedra of minimum non-zero volume, and thereby extend an algorithm of Edelsbrunner, O'Rourke and Seidel. In general, for every , the maximum number of k-dimensional simplices of minimum (non-zero) volume spanned by n points in d is Θ(nk).

2. (ii) The number of unit volume tetrahedra determined by n points in 3 is O(n7/2), and there are point sets for which this number is Ω(n3 log logn).

3. (iii) For every , the minimum number of distinct volumes of all full-dimensional simplices determined by n points in d, not all on a hyperplane, is Θ(n).

Let Tn be the complete binary tree of height n considered as the Hasse diagram of a poset with its root 1n as the maximum element. Define A(n; T) = [mid ]{S ⊆ Tn : 1n ∈ S, S ≅ T}[mid ], and B(n; T) = [mid ]{S ⊆ Tn : 1n ∉ S, S ≅ T}[mid ]. In this note we prove that for any fixed n and rooted binary trees T1, T2 such that T2 contains a subposet isomorphic to T1. We conjecture that the ratio A/B also increases with T for arbitrary trees. These inequalities imply natural behaviour of the optimal stopping time in a poset extension of the secretary problem.
