Synthetic dyes in industrial effluents pose a significant risk to human health and the environment, so much effort has been expended to degrade them using various methods, including the use of clay minerals as catalysts. The purpose of this study was to advance understanding of the mechanisms for clay-catalyzed degradation of crystal violet (CV) and other triarylmethine dyes using three different vermiculite clays (Llano, Texas, VTx-1; Ojen, OV; and Russian, RV), a montmorillonite (SWy-1), and a Spanish sepiolite (SEP). While OV, RV, SWy-1, and SEP showed almost no activity with respect to dye degradation, VTx-1 caused complete removal of the dye from solution up to the equivalent of 200% of the cation exchange capacity of the clay. While large amounts of dye were removed from the solution, no change in basal spacing was observed by X-ray diffraction. The kinetics of removal of CV from solution began after a lag period of >10 days in a process that can be described by pseudo-second order kinetics. By comparison, adsorption of CV onto SWy-1 and SEP was immediate, without any lag period. Sonication treatment of the VTx-1 vermiculite suspension caused the CV removal process to begin immediately. Fourier-transform infrared measurements of adsorption of CV on clays revealed that for the OV and RV vermiculites, SEP sepiolite, and SWy-1 montmorillonite the spectra were similar to the original dye; the spectra of the VTx-1-dye differed considerably, however, exhibiting vibrations of methylene groups (—CH2—) which were not present in the CV molecule. The significant changes in the IR spectrum indicated that CV underwent degradation on the surface of the VTx-1 vermiculite. Carbon-content analysis led to the conclusion that degradation products remained bound to the clay. Similar effects were observed for two other triarylmethine dyes (malachite green and methyl green) added to VTx-1, indicated that it may, therefore, be considered suitable as a sorbent to remove and decompose such dyes from industrial effluents. Pretreatment by sonication would remove the need for long incubation times.

Bentonites are excellent materials for sequestering various metal cations because of the cation fixation ability of the constituent montmorillonite layers, but sometimes, such as in the case of Cu2+, the exact location of cation fixation with respect to the clay layers is difficult to determine. Na-montmorillonite was prepared from the <2 µm fraction of the bentonite Calcigel (from Bavaria, Germany) and exchanged by Cu2+ and Na+ or by Cu2+ and ${\text{NH}}_4^{+}$\$\end{document} cations. The resulting materials (bi-ionic Cu-Na and Cu-NH4 samples, respectively, as well as homo-ionic forms with Cu2+, Na+ and ${\text{NH}}_4^{+}$\$\end{document}) were heated for 24 h at temperatures of 300 and 450°C and the structural evolution characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis.

The XRD patterns showed that the Cu sample and the Cu-Na sample have basal spacings of 12.5 Å. Upon heating at 300 and 450°C, the layers collapsed to 9.5 Å. In contrast, the d001 value in the NH4 sample and Cu-NH4 sample decreased to 10.0 Å and 10.2 Å, respectively, during the heat treatment. The Cu2+ ions migrated irreversibly into the montmorillonite structure.

For the NH4 and the Cu-NH4 samples, DSC analyses show that NH3 evolved at between 300 and 400°C though the octahedral sheet was not altered substantially by the H+ generated. Infrared spectra show that the bands of the Si-O and OH vibrations of all samples were changed upon heating due to the movement of the dehydrated cations into the hexagonal holes of the tetrahedral sheet. Apparently no Cu2+ was trapped in the octahedral sheet. In the case of the Cu-NH4 form, both Cu2+ fixation and de-ammonization occurred during the heat treatment. Other than maintaining the basal spacing, no effect of the presence of ${\text{NH}}_4^{+}$\$\end{document} on the Cu2+ fixation could be found for the montmorillonite studied.

The Söğüt kaolinite deposits at Çaltı, İnhisar, and Küre, Turkey, are an important source of raw materials for the ceramics industry of that country, but no detailed mineralogical or geochemical characterizations of these economically important materials have been carried out to date. The purpose of this study was to fill this gap by performing mineralogical, geochemical, and isotopic characterizations of these kaolinite deposits which occur within Paleozoic granite-granodiorite complexes that are crosscut by aplite and pegmatite dikes, and overlain by Neogene sedimentary units. These units are dominated by quartz veins and networks of subvertical fractures and weak zones that were invaded by hydrothermal fluids, resulting in their kaolinization and silicification. Altered units and related host rocks were examined using polarized-light microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and chemical and isotopic methods. Feldspar crystals are either sericitized or kaolinized, and mica exhibits partial chloritization; Fe-Ti-Mn oxides occur within fractures. Kaolinite crystals occur in authigenic vermiform or plate-like stacked forms, having contacts with resorbed feldspar crystals which locally exhibit thick, platy, and subparallel orientations relative to microfractures, the pathways for hydrothermal-fluid injection. Altered feldspar relicts are associated mainly with kaolinite, smectite, quartz crystals, and illite/mica. Increase in (Al+Fe)/Si in the kaolinized units (relative to host-rock granite and granodiorite complexes and silicification), depletion of Ba+Rb, and a negative Eu anomaly reveal that the alteration of feldspar by hydrothermal fluid, the character of which was determined from O- and H-isotopic values, resulted in the precipitation of kaolinite. Thus, the Söğüt kaolinite deposit possibly formed by hydrothermal alteration and a feldspar dissolution-precipitation mechanism in both the granite-granodiorites complexes and related overlying sedimentary units under acidic environmental conditions, which developed via depletion of the soluble elements Na and Ca.

The sizes and shapes of single clay mineral layers are difficult to determine though they are important parameters which determine the final properties of clay polymer nanocomposites and of ultrathin clay mineral films. To determine these sizes and shapes, hybrid monolayers of clay minerals (saponite, hectorite, Wyoming bentonite, and Laponite) and Rhodamine B octadecyl ester Perchlorate (RhB18) were prepared using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique and studied with atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images reveal monolayers of elementary clay mineral layers, which are randomly oriented and have a wide range of sizes. The layers have typical shapes: lath-like for hectorite, plates for Wyoming bentonite, a mixture of laths and plates for saponite, and aggregates of very small layers of Laponite. Two types of layers were present in the LB films of saponite, Wyoming bentonite, and hectorite in a 40:60 ratio: (1) single layers 0.96 nm thick hybridized with RhB18; and (2) particles consisting of two clay layers with an intercalated monomolecular layer of water molecules and hybridized with RhB18. The Laponite particles in the hybrid LB films consist mainly of aggregates of two and three single layers.

Soil formation usually results in an increase in magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic properties of the products of transformation of ferrihydrite, a typical precursor of other soil Fe oxides, were examined in the present work. Synthetic 2-line ferrihydrite was aged at two temperatures (25 and 50°C) and two different relative humidities (80 and 100%) in the presence of silicate, phosphate, citrate, and tartrate as adsorbed ligands (molar anion/Fe ratio = 1–3%). The ligands delayed or prevented the transformation of ferrihydrite to hematite. The magnetic susceptibility of the ferrihydrite transformation products increased with aging, the rate of increase depending on the type of ligand added and its concentration. The largest increase in magnetic susceptibility, sixfold, was obtained with ferrihydrite in a citrate/Fe ratio of 1%, after 1500 days. The resulting magnetic products exihibited superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature and high coercivity at 5 K. The formation of an intermediate ferrimagnetic phase in the ferrihydrite-to-hematite transformation might explain the magnetic enhancement observed in many aerobic soils lacking other sources of magnetic minerals.

Todorokite is a common manganese oxide mineral, with a tunnel structure, found in Earth surface environments, and is easily synthesized from layered birnessite. The aim of the current study was to prepare birnessites with different average manganese oxidation states (AOS) by controlling the ${\text{MnO}}_4^{-}{\text{/Mn}}^{2+}$\$\end{document} ratio in concentrated NaOH or KOH. A series of (Na,K)-birnessites, Na-birnessites, and K-birnessites with different AOS was synthesized successfully in strongly alkaline media. The (Na,K)-birnessites and Na-birnessites prepared in NaOH clearly contained both large (500–1000 nm) and small (40–400 nm), plate-shaped crystallites. The K-birnessites prepared in KOH media consisted mostly of irregular (100–200 nm), plate-shaped crystallites. The degree of transformation of birnessite to todorokite at atmospheric pressure decreased as the AOS values of (Na,K)-birnessites and Na-birnessites increased from 3.51 to 3.80. No todorokite was present when a Na-birnessite with an AOS value of 3.87 was used as the precursor. Pyrophosphate, which is known to form strong complexes with Mn3+ at a pH range of 1–8, was added to a suspension of (Na,K)-birnessites in order to sequester the available Mn3+ in (Na,K)-birnessites. Removal of Mn3+ from birnessite MnO6 layers by pyrophosphate restricted transformation to todorokite — no (Na,K)-birnessite transformed to todorokite after pyrophosphate treatment. The interlayer K+ initially within (Na,K)-birnessites could not be completely ion-exchanged with Mg2+ to form todorokite at atmospheric pressure. No todorokite was forthcoming from K-birnessites even from those with small AOS values (3.50).

Occurrences of halloysite-rich material in altered volcanic rocks, principally trachyandesites, dacites, and tuffs, extend over an area of ∼1 km2 in the southwestern part of Limnos, Island, northeast Aegean Sea, Greece. The present study was designed to investigate the alteration processes which acted on the biotite in these volcanic rocks, to describe in detail the mechanism of formation of the halloysite, and to specify the mechanisms of formation of anatase during the alteration processes. Samples were examined using polarized-light microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform-Raman techniques. The extensive alteration of the parent rocks, triggered by the circulation of hydrothermal fluids through faults and fractures, resulted in the alteration of biotite to halloysite. Six stages of alteration were recognized. Nanoparticles of halloysite were initially formed on the mica layers, which progressively grew through short-tubular to well formed tubular halloysite, with increasing alteration. In the most altered samples, laths and interconnected laths with the composition (Al3.96Fe0.04)Si4O10(OH)8, were the dominant halloysite morphologies. Anatase was encountered as an alteration product of both ilmenite and biotite. Ilmenite was altered to anatase and Fe oxides. The altered ilmenite crystals constrained most of the newly formed anatase within the space occupied previously by ilmenite, leading to the formation of skeletal anatase. The layered structure of the micas was the main factor governing the morphology of newly formed anatase developed outside ilmenite margins in the form of layers parallel to those of mica. An unusual ring-like structure of anatase was thought to be the result of the uncommon alteration of inner parts of mica folia to tubular halloysite oriented perpendicular to the mica layers. The detachment of the halloysite tubes by circulating hydrothermal fluids was considered to be the reason for the creation of holes which were subsequently surrounded by the anatase ring forms.

Leaching experiments with metallic uranium-aluminum research-reactor fuel elements in repository-relevant MgCl2-rich salt brine (brine 2) were performed. A Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) with chloride as the interlayer anion was identified as a crystalline secondary-phase component. In the present study, the incorporation of Cd into the structure of the Mg-Al-Cl LDH was investigated. Synthesis by a coprecipitation method was performed and the Mg-Cd-Al-Cl LDH obtained was characterized. The sorption behavior of selenium on the LDH was investigated in water, clay pore-water (Mont-Terri-type), and brine 2. Using a LDH concentration of 10 g/L, the sorption kinetics were rapid and equilibrium was reached within 12 h. The sorption of selenium decreased with increasing amount of chloride anions in the solutions. The chloride anions acted as competing anions for the sorption of selenium. The effect of pH on selenium sorption was investigated and a large buffer capacity of the LDH was observed. For the range of selenium concentration used, linear sorption isotherms were obtained which obeyed the Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. From these, the energies of selenium sorption were calculated to be in the range of ion-exchange processes.

Enhancement of the physico-chemical properties of elastomers can be achieved by the addition of fillers, such as silica, but the search for less expensive alternative materials continues. The objective of this study was to investigate natural or organically modified clay minerals as such an alternative. Organo-clays modified by quaternary ammonium cations with three methyl groups and longest alkyl chains of different lengths were prepared by ion-exchange reaction of the commercial product JP A030 (Envigeo, Slovakia) based on Jelšový Potok bentonite with organic salts: tetramethylammonium (TMA) chloride, octyltrimethylammonium (OTMA) bromide, and octadecyltrimethylammonium (ODTMA) bromide. Physico-chemical characterizations of the organo-clays used as fillers in rubber nanocomposites and their mechanical properties were measured using Fourier transform infrared (IR) spectroscopy, which provided information on the chemical composition of the mineral and on the amount of organic moieties adsorbed. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) was used to monitor the arrangement of organic chains in galleries of montmorillonite and showed that the longest-chain alkylammonium ODTMA+ ions were intercalated between layers, adopting a pseudotrimolecular conformation, while OTMA+ and TMA+ were in monomolecular arrangement. Surface areas were measured by sorption of N2 and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Natural rubber-clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt intercalation, in some cases also with addition of silica, a conventional reinforcing filler. The microstructure of montmorillonite in these composites was characterized by XRD analysis. The effect of clay and organo-clays loading from 1 to 10 phr (parts by weight per hundred parts of rubber) on stress at break, strain at break, and Modulus 100 (M100) was investigated by tensile tests. Filler ODTMA-JP A030 appears to be the most effective among the organoclays; surprisingly similar values of composite elongation and strength were obtained with unmodified bentonite JP A030.

Natural and synthetic micas have been used widely as substrates to study biological systems; but, as in the case of negatively charged DNA, anionic charge repulsion may render micas a less than ideal templating surface for many biological systems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential for the chlorite clinoclore, which contains a positively charged interlayer octahedral sheet, to serve as a substrate for DNA adsorption. The relationships between clinochlore cleavage characteristics, in terms of nano-morphology, and surface potential are investigated, as are its average crystal chemistry and topology. That the structural features of clinochlore can be used successfully to condense, order, and self assemble complex biomolecules, such as DNA is also proven.

A natural IIb-4 clinochlore [$C\overline{1}$\$\end{document} symmetry, unit-cell parameters a = 0.53301(4); b = 0.92511(6); c = 1.4348(1) (nm); α = 90.420(3); β = 97.509(3); γ = 89.996(4) (°)] with chemical composition $\left({\text{Mg}}_{1.701}{\text{Fe}}_{0.245}^{2+}{\text{Ti}}_{0.004}{\text{Al}}_{0.998}{\text{Cr}}_{0.052}^{3+}\right){\text{Mg}}_3\left({\text{Si}}_{2.939}{\text{Al}}_{1.015}{\text{Fe}}_{0.046}^{3+}\right){\text{O}}_{10}\left({\text{OH}}_{7.913}{\text{F}}_{0.087}\right)$\$\end{document} was selected. The octahedral sites of the silicate layer (<M(1)−O> = 0.2080 nm and <M(2)−O> = 0.2081 nm) are equal and occupied by Mg, whereas the octahedral sites in the interlayer M(3) and M(4) (<M(3)−O> = 0.2088 nm and <M(4) − O> = 0.1939 nm) show different sizes and are mostly completely occupied by divalent (Mg2+ and Fe2+) and trivalent (Al3+) cations, respectively.

The clinochlore cleaved surface is present in two forms: (1) the stripe type (0.40 nm in height, up to several micrometers long and ranging from some nanometers to a few microns in lateral size); and (2) the triangular type (0.40 nm in height). Both features may result either from interlayer sheets whose cleavage weak directions are related to the different M(3) and M(4) site occupancy, or from weak interlayer bonding along specific directions to the 2:1 layer underneath. The cleaved surface, particularly at the cleaved edges, presents high DNA affinity, which is directly related to an average positive surface and ledge potential.

The cation exchange capacity (CEC) is one of the most important properties of clays in terms of their performance in both natural and technical processes. For decades, common methods for determining exchangeable cations have failed when calcareous clays or soils were examined, because calcite is at least partly dissolved throughout the exchange experiment which in turn increases measureable Ca2+ concentrations. As a result, exchangeable Ca2+ and the sum of exchangeable cations by far exceed the amount of negative charges. In the past, the silver-thiourea method (AgTU) has been modified to overcome this problem (AgTUcalcite), but is unsatisfactory as the method is laborious. In the present study three new methods based on two alternative metal complexes, cobalt(III) hexamine (CoHex) and copper(II) triethylenetetramine (Cu-trien), are proposed. The optimum solid/liquid ratios of these methods and the optimum complex concentration of Cu-trien are reported, depending on the mineralogical composition of the samples. The key development is that the exchange solutions are saturated with respect to calcite prior to the experiment. Approximately 70–90% of the dissolution of calcite present as an admixture in a clay sample is suppressed in the subsequent cation exchange experiment, but not all. The Ca2+ exchange is not suppressed and there is no evidence for any precipitation of this Ca2+. Three possibilities for how to handle this problem are discussed, one of which is to perform no further correction. The resulting error arises from the remaining calcite solubility of the different solutions after pre-treatment with calcite. This corresponds to errors of 0.2–1.3 (CoHexcalcite)and 0.7–8.4 (Cu-triencalcite) meq/100 gCa2+ for samples with small and large CEC values, respectively. As a consequence of the poor performance of Cu-triencalcite for samples with large CEC, a more concentrated Cu-trien5 × calcite solution was developed which performed much better: 0.1–0.8 meq/100 g(Cu-trien5 × calcite). For Cu-trien5 × calcite and CoHexcalcite at least, the errors are in the range of the non-systematic scattering for exchangeable Ca2+ determination. Therefore, the methods suggested provide ‘operationally correct’ Ca2+ values without additional effort. Moreover, owing to the high selectivity of the index cations applied in the present study, only one exchange step is required, providing a significant advantage over the AgTUcalcite method.

The aims of this study were to obtain accurate structural information on the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethylselenoxide (DMSeO) kaolinite intercalates, paying close attention to the hydrogen-bond geometries, and to provide a detailed interpretation of the individual vibrational modes of intercalates under study and relate their energies to the formation of the hydrogen bonds. Accurate positions of all the atoms in the structures of kaolinite:dimethylsulfoxide (K:DMSO) and kaolinite:dimethylselenoxide (K:DMSeO) intercalates have been obtained by the total energy minimization in solid state at density functional theory (DFT) level of the theory. The bond distances and angles in the kaolinite 1:1 layer are in good agreement with those reported in the most recent single-crystal refinement of kaolinite. Computed geometries of DMSO and DMSeO agree well with the high-quality diffraction data and independent theoretical ab initio calculations. The organic molecules are fixed in the interlayer space mainly by three moderately strong O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, of different strengths, with the O⋯O contact distances being within 2.739–2.932 Å (K:DMSO) and 2.681–2.849 Å (K:DMSeO). Substantially weaker C-H⋯O and O-H⋯S(Se) contacts play only a supporting role. The optimized atomic coordinates were used to calculate the individual vibrational modes between 0 and 4000 cm−1. The maximum red shifts of the OH-stretching modes caused by the formation of the O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds were 407 cm−1 (K-DMSO) and 537 cm−1 (K-DMeSO), respectively. The Al-O-H bending modes are spread over the large interval of 100–1200 cm−1, but the dominant contributions are concentrated between 800 and 1200 cm−1. Theoretically calculated energies of the OH- and CH-stretching modes show good agreement with the previously published figures obtained from the infrared and Raman spectra of these intercalates.

Intercalation of a wide variety of alkylammonium cations into the interlayer spaces of swelling clay minerals leads to many different applications, ranging from surface-charge measurements to rendering the clay compatible for the preparation of clay nanocomposites, but knowledge of the exact conformation of the intercalated organic species is still incomplete, thus preventing a full understanding of this process. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interlayer conformation of dodecyltrimethylammonium (DDTMA) bromide in rectorite as affected by the amounts of DDTMA intercalated, using a battery of physical and spectroscopic methods. The capacity of rectorite to intercalate DDTMA was equivalent to 1.67 times the cation exchange capacity (1.67 CEC) of the mineral even though the initial input was as much as 5.00 CEC. When the DDTMA intercalated was <0.50 CEC of the mineral, minimal counterion sorption was associated with DDTMA intercalation. Derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) analyses revealed a single-peak decomposition temperature (Tpeak) at 430°C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated a flat-lying monolayer of the intercalated molecules, while shifts in Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) bands confirmed gauche conformation. These results suggested that cation exchange was the dominant mechanism. At the maximum intercalation, the DDTMA adopted a horizontal trilayer arrangement with mainly gauche conformation as determined by FTIR and XRD. Meanwhile a second Tpeak appeared at 255°C, similar to the Tpeak of solid DDTMA. Counterion bromide sorption accompanying DDTMA intercalation reached a capacity of 310 mmol/kg. The results indicated that van der Waals interaction was responsible for the DDTMA uptake at the amount beyond 0.50 CEC. When the amount of DDTMA intercalated was between 0.5 and 1.67 CEC, the XRD patterns showed non-integrality, i.e. the 002 reflection was split into two non-integral peaks with 2 × d002 < d001 and 3 × d003 > d001. They became integral at 1.67 CEC. The results suggest that the mineral might be composed of mixed layers of a monolayer intercalated rectorite and a trilayer intercalated rectorite, without a bilayer as intermediate, when the amount of DDTMA intercalated was between 0.5 and 1.67 CEC.

Kaolin-group clay minerals can be modified to form nanotubular and mesoporous structures with interesting catalytic properties, but knowledge of the best methods for preparing these structures is still incomplete. The objective of this study was to investigate intercalation/deintercalation as a method for the delamination and rolling of kaolinite layers in relation to structural order. To prepare nanotubular material, kaolinites of different crystallinities and halloysite (all from Polish deposits) were chosen. The experimental procedure consisted of four stages: (1) preparation of a dimethyl sulfoxide precursor intercalate; (2) interlayer grafting with 1,3-butanediol; (3) hexylamine intercalation; and (4) deintercalation of amine-intercalated minerals using toluene as the solvent. Structural perturbations and changes in the morphology of the minerals were examined by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The number of rolled kaolinite layers depended heavily on the efficiency of the intercalation steps. An increase in the structural disorder and extensive delamination of the minerals subjected to chemical treatment were recorded. Kaolinite particles which exhibited tubular morphology or showed rolling effects were observed using TEM. The nanotubes formed were ∼30 nm in diameter, with their length depending on the particle sizes of the minerals.

The conversion of volcanic glass to secondary alteration products is one of the most common mineralogical transformations during low-temperature hydrothermal alteration of submarine basalts. To better understand the mechanism and kinetics of this transformation, porphyritic and formerly glassy trachybasalt, recovered from Conical Seamount, Papua New Guinea, was studied in detail. Low-temperature interaction of trachybasalt with hydrothermal fluids at this submerged volcano occurred in response to the formation of submarine epithermal-style gold mineralization. Alteration of the coherent volcanic rocks is heterogeneous with pronounced differences in alteration intensity occurring between igneous minerals and the surrounding glassy groundmass. In comparison to the volcanic glass, the crystalline phases were less prone to hydrothermal alteration with the alteration susceptibility decreasing from clinopyroxene through biotite to feldspar. Low-temperature alteration of clinopyroxene resulted in the formation of abundant saponite-like smectite with no topotactic relationship being observed between the two phases. In contrast, the conversion of biotite to smectite involved structural inheritance as the orientation of common structural blocks was maintained during alteration. Transmission and analytical electron microscopy revealed that pervasive alteration of interstitial glass in the groundmass of the trachybasalt resulted in the formation of montmorillonite- and saponite-like smectite whereby smectite composition is strongly influenced by the glass chemistry. The occurrence of poorly crystalline domains with a 0.3 to 0.4 nm layer spacing in the altered interstitial glass suggests that the transformation of glass to smectite involved the formation of a transitional alteration product. Comparison with the results of previous studies highlights the fact that the glass-to-smectite transformation can proceed through more than one reaction pathway. Reaction style and reaction progress are controlled by kinetic factors such as the mode of fluid transport triggering alteration in the low-temperature hydrothermal environment. Alteration of the trachybasalt at Conical Seamount is inferred to have taken place at a comparably low fluid-rock ratio as the low permeability and the absence of primary fractures and joints restricted fluid circulation through the coherent volcanic rocks.

Numerous studies have investigated the ligand-promoted dissolution of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides. In natural environments, inorganic ligands can compete with organic ligands for surface sites on (oxyhydr)oxides which may influence dissolution rates. Published research of this interaction and its effect on the dissolution of (oxyhydr)oxides is rare. The objective of the present study was to examine the extent to which silica, as a naturally occurring competitive ligand added in the form of silicic acid, impacts the oxalate-promoted dissolution of the common soil Fe (oxyhydr)oxide goethite. Sorbed silica reduced the oxalate-promoted dissolution rate of goethite at all surface coverages investigated. As initial silica solution concentrations increased from 0.50 mM to 5.0 mM, relatively little change in the dissolution rate was observed. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated that, as silica-surface coverages increased, the silica underwent polymerization on the goethite surface. Initially, silicate was associated with surface functional groups, but as polymerization occurred some of the silica appeared to desorb from the goethite surface without being released into the bulk solution, suggesting that silica polymers formed discrete islands or surface clusters that grew away from the goethite surface rather than expanding epitaxially across the surface. Minimal changes were observed in the quantity of reactive goethite surface, which is responsible for the observed dissolution rates, as silica-surface coverages increased.

In Ecuador, DINAGE (known today as the Servicio Geológico Nacional) and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources have discovered a huge allophane deposit covering an area of >4000 km2. This study presents the results from an investigation of a 16-m thick vertical sequence from this deposit, supposedly the weathering product of two different volcanic ash deposits. In particular, the distribution of alkali metals within the uppermost layer indicates that the weathering process is still ongoing.

According to the mineralogical composition, an allophane-rich layer (allophane facies) could be distinguished from the underlying halloysite-rich layer (halloysite facies). A 2-m thick transition zone is characterized by the presence of gibbsite and intermediate specific surface area values. Only a few imogolite fibers could be identified (by scanning electron microscopy), indicating the dominance of allophane over imogolite in the allophane facies. Single allophane particles were investigated by atomic force microscopy, though this method was less accurate than transmission electron microscopy with respect to the determination of the primary particle diameter. Carbon isotope analysis (14C) suggested an age of ∼20,000 y for the allophane layer.

Within the allophane facies, a 4-m thick layer occurs containing 70–80 wt.% allophane with an N2-BET specific surface area of >300 m2/g. Based on infrared and energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements, an Al/Si ratio of 1.3–1.4 was established for this allophane, which is between Al-rich and Si-rich allophane. The allophane layer may be of economic value due to the large allophane content, the small amount of organic matter, and the significant thickness of the deposit.

The size, shape, and continuity of pores in mineral solids greatly influence the behavior of percolating liquids and solids in porous media, which has significant practical environmental implications. In order to expand understanding of these properties in soil minerals, the present study was undertaken to analyze the pore characteristics of bentonite, illite, and kaolinite in the forms of powder and aggregates of different dimensions, combining water-vapor desorption and mercury-intrusion techniques. Different granulometric fractions of milled quartz glass were also studied. With increasing aggregate size of the minerals, larger pore volumes (up to 25%), smaller surface areas (down to 15%), larger average radii (up to 15%), and smaller fractal dimensions (down to 6%) were measured using water-vapor adsorption-desorption data. The differences were smallest for bentonite, possibly due to the smallest particle size of this mineral and/or to its very large water-vapor adsorption capacity. The degree of water-vapor adsorption on quartz was too small to rely on the data obtained.

The pore volumes and average radii, measured by mercury-intrusion porosimetry, were up to few times larger for the mineral powders than for their aggregate counterparts. Similar values were noted for aggregates >1 mm in diameter, for which the input of interaggregate spaces into total porosity of the sample bed was negligible. Two pathways of mercury intrusion were detected in porosimetric curves: filling of interaggregate spaces, and penetration into aggregates. Similar penetration thresholds into aggregates of different sizes were calculated. With increasing size of quartz grains, the pore volume of the quartz bed decreased whereas the average pore radius increased. Mercury intrusion detected pore-fractal behavior of bentonite and kaolinite, but for aggregated minerals the calculated values of fractal dimensions were >3, values which increased with increasing aggregate size. Very similar pore parameters were measured for aggregates prepared from a natural deposit of kaolinite and for artificially prepared aggregates from powder of the same mineral, indicating that artificial aggregation can simulate natural processes.

Both water desorption and mercury intrusion detected fractal behavior in the limited range of pores. A test to find fractal build up of the aggregates in extended scales based on a dependence of surface area of unit volume of aggregate bed on aggregate size showed no fractal-aggregate build-up.

Deep sediments from the Red Sea have been studied extensively and provide a rich resource for understanding mineral transformations under hydrothermal conditions. Interrelationships among various sampling sites, however, are still rather incomplete. The purpose of the present study was to increase understanding of these systems by characterizing and comparing the Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides from the southern Atlantis II, Chain A, Chain B, and Discovery Deeps, using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Some of the hydrothermal sediments of Chain A are dominated by Si-associated Fe oxides (ferrihydrite, goethite, lepidocrocite, and short-range ordered, rounded particles) resembling the hydrothermal sediments of the SW basin in the Atlantis II Deep, indicating sub-bottom connections between the Deeps. Although some of the sediments of the Discovery Deep show a similar trend; short-range ordered, rounded particles were not detected in these sediments, implying that crystallization of this short-range ordered phase is sensitive to the Si/Fe ratio in the brine and only at elevated ratios does it crystallize out of the brine. Silicon-associated and Fe-enriched Mn oxyhydroxides such as groutite, manganite, todorokite, and Mn-dominated lathlike layers occasionally contain Ca and Mg impurities. Manganese substitutes for Fe and vice versa, leading to a solid-solution series between goethite and groutite and Mn-enriched ferrihydrite. Hematite is the only Fe oxide in the hydrothermal sediments that is found to be lacking in impurities, which is probably due to its formation by recrystallization from other Fe oxides.

Lithiophorite is a naturally occurring Mn oxide mineral commonly found in soils and sediments. The usual method of synthesizing lithiophorite is via a hydrothermal process in an autoclave at relatively high temperature and pressure. In the present study, an alternative, reflux method, at atmospheric pressure, for synthesis of lithiophorite was developed successfully. The influence of reaction duration, temperature, type of precursor birnessite (H-birnessite, Na-birnessite, aged Na-birnessite), and pH on the formation of lithiophorite were investigated by reflux treatment of lithium-aluminum hydroxide complex ion ()-exchanged birnessite. The results show that the degree of conversion of lithiophorite decreases with decreasing reaction temperature. Lithiophorite can be obtained at pH values from 5.0 to 9.0, but a circumneutral pH is more favorable for formation at atmospheric pressure. Conversion of Na-birnessite (Bir-OH) to lithiophorite is more favored than aged Na-birnessite (Bir-OH-A). Lithiophorite was not obtained by refluxing the ion-exchanged H-birnessite (Bir-H) sample. The rate of conversion of lithiophorite increases with increasing reflux time. Lithiophorite synthesized by a reflux process has pseudo-hexagonal crystals of 0.1–0.5 µm with a chemical composition of Li0.24Al0.46MnO2.67(H2O)1.25. The results have important implications for the origin and underlying mechanism of lithiophorite formation in the environment.
