Hecke operators are used to investigate part of the ${{E}_{2}}$-term of the Adams spectral sequence based on elliptic homology. The main result is a derivation of $\text{Ex}{{\text{t}}^{1}}$ which combines use of classical Hecke operators and $p$-adic Hecke operators due to Serre.

The paper studies modular reduction techniques for abstract regular and chiral polytopes, with two purposes in mind: first, to survey the literature about modular reduction in polytopes; and second, to apply modular reduction, with moduli given by primes in $\mathbb{Z}\left[ \tau \right]$ (with $\tau$ the golden ratio), to construct new regular 4-polytopes of hyperbolic types $\{3,\,5,\,3\}$ and $\{5,\,3,\,5\}$ with automorphism groups given by finite orthogonal groups.

A continuous real vector function is said to be nonoscillatory on an interval if at least one of its components is of constant positive or negative sign there. In this note, various existence criteria for nonoscillatory solutions of the system x(m) = (-l)mQ(t)x are established. In some cases, additional monotonicity properties for these solutions are also given.

We identify the quantum limits of scattering states for the modular surface. This is obtained through the study of quantum measures of non-holomorphic Eisenstein series away from the critical line. We provide a range of stability for the quantum unique ergodicity theorem of Luo and Sarnak.

The paper offers a study of the inverse Laplace transforms of the functions ${{I}_{n}}\left( rs \right)\,{{\{sI_{n}^{\prime }\,\left( s \right)\}}^{-1}}$ where ${{I}_{n}}$ is the modified Bessel function of the first kind and $r$ is a parameter. The present study is a continuation of the author's previous work on the singular behavior of the special case of the functions in question, $r=1$. The general case of $r\,\in \,\left[ 0,\,1 \right]$ is addressed, and it is shown that the inverse Laplace transforms for such $r$ exhibit significantly more complex behavior than their predecessors, even though they still only have two different types of points of discontinuity: singularities and finite discontinuities. The functions studied originate from non-stationary fluid-structure interaction, and as such are of interest to researchers working in the area.

In this note we obtain a q-analog of a pair of biorthogonal sets of rational functions which have been obtained recently by M. Rahman in connection with the addition theorem for the Hahn polynomials.

In this paper, we show that the Möbius invariant function space ${{\mathcal{Q}}_{p}}$ can be generated by variant Dirichlet type spaces ${{\mathcal{D}}_{\mu ,p}}$ induced by finite positive Borel measures $\mu $ on the open unit disk. A criterion for the equality between the space ${{\mathcal{D}}_{\mu ,p}}$ and the usual Dirichlet type space ${{\mathcal{D}}_{p}}$ is given. We obtain a sufficient condition to construct different ${{\mathcal{D}}_{\mu ,p}}$ spaces and provide examples. We establish decomposition theorems for ${{\mathcal{D}}_{\mu ,p}}$ spaces and prove that the non-Hilbert space ${{\mathcal{Q}}_{p}}$ is equal to the intersection of Hilbert spaces ${{\mathcal{D}}_{\mu ,p}}$. As an application of the relation between ${{\mathcal{Q}}_{p}}$ and ${{\mathcal{D}}_{\mu ,p}}$ spaces, we also obtain that there exist different ${{\mathcal{D}}_{\mu ,p}}$ spaces; this is a trick to prove the existence without constructing examples.

In this paper, we prove that a non–zero power series $F(z\text{)}\in \mathbb{C}\text{ }[[z]]$ satisfying

where $d\,\ge \,2,\,A(z),\,B(z)\,\in \,\mathbb{C}[z]$, with $A(z)\,\ne \,0$ and $\deg \,A(z),\,\deg \,B(z)\,<\,d$ is transcendental over $\mathbb{C}(z)$. Using this result and a theorem of Mahler’s, we extend results of Golomb and Schwarz on transcendental values of certain power series. In particular, we prove that for all $k\,\ge \,2$ the series ${{G}_{k}}(z):=\mathop{\sum }_{n=0}^{\infty }{{z}^{{{k}^{n}}}}{{(1-{{z}^{{{k}^{n}}}})}^{-1}}$ is transcendental for all algebraic numbers $z$ with $\left| z \right|\,<\,1$. We give a similar result for ${{F}_{k}}(z):=\mathop{\sum }_{n=0}^{\infty }{{z}^{{{k}^{n}}}}{{(1+{{z}^{{{k}^{n}}}})}^{-1}}$. These results were known to Mahler, though our proofs of the function transcendence are new and elementary; no linear algebra or differential calculus is used.

The purpose of this expository article is to familiarize the reader with one of the fundamental problems in the theory of infinite groups. We give an up-to-date account of the so-called Fox problem which concerns the identification of certain normal subgroups of free groups arising out of certain ideals in the free group rings. We assume that the reader is familiar with the elementary concepts of algebra.

An example is given of a UFD which has an infinitely generated Derksen invariant. The ring is “almost rigid” meaning that the Derksen invariant is equal to the Makar-Limanov invariant. Techniques to show that a ring is (almost) rigid are discussed, among which is a generalization of Mason's ABC-theorem.

We give precise conditions under which the composition of a norm with a convex function yields a uniformly convex function on a Banach space. Various applications are given to functions of power type. The results are dualized to study uniform smoothness and several examples are provided.

The object of this paper is to show that every soluble right orderable group is locally indicable. The proof identifies an interesting connection between the theory of right orderable groups and the theory of amenable groups and bounded cohomology.

The purpose of this paper is to present a geometric theorem which provides a proof of a fundamental theorem of finite Markov chains.

The theorem, stated in matrix theoretic terms, concerns the asymptotic behaviour of the powers of an n by n stochastic matrix, that is, a matrix of non-negative entries each of whose row sums is 1. The matrix might arise from a repeated physical process which goes from one of n possible states to another at each iteration and whose probability of going to a state depends only on the state it is in at present and not on its more distant history.

We axiomatize the theory of real and complex numbers in Boolean-valued models of set theory, and prove that every Horn sentence true in the complex numbers is true in any complete Stonean algebra, and provable from its axioms.
