A constitutive theory of snow is developed to describe the mechanical properties of snow in terms of the properties of the ice grains and the necks that interconnect them. The principle of virtual work is used to calculate the stresses in the particles and necks. A number of different deformation mechanisms are investigated and, depending upon the deformation mechanism which is dominant for given load conditions, different equations are used to calculate the strains in the grains and necks. These strains around a representative ice grain are then averaged and scaled to obtain the global strains in the snow. The theory is then compared with experimental data to determine if the mechanical properties of snow can be adequately represented. Results show that the constitutive theory does work, but that it is cumbersome to implement, and that for practical use substantial computational capability is needed.

An Ice Tracking System (ITS) is under development which will automatically extract ice kinematic information from time sequential imagery over Canadian waterways. NOAA AVHRR data are routinely collected at the Ice Centre Environment Canada (ICEC) and are a valuable data source for operational ice analysis and forecasting. For this study AVHRR data were collected between January and February 1992 over the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The requirement for cloud-free data limited its use. Multiple images over short time intervals were available for a one to two day period, however these were followed by gaps of three to four days. On days when imagery was available synoptic conditions were always similar favouring a southeasterly ice drift. The east coast of Canada is a very difficult ice environment in which to extract accurate ice motion. The ice regime consists mainly of young ice types exhibiting very dynamic behaviour. To the NOAA sensor the ice cover can appear viscous and featureless. The inaccuracies in the extracted ice kinematic information was attributed to positional errors with the input data and the inability of the tracking algorithm to identify correctly the same features on time sequential images. Geocoding inaccuracies, a result of the systematic geocoding process, had an average error of 2.7 km. Algorithm inaccuracies, a result of incorrect matching, had an average error of 2.45 km.

Variations in the chemical composition of subsurface runoff within Canada Glacier, Antarctica, are used to identify the main source waters, which are vertical surfaces, and melt from solar-heated debris within channels, cryoconite holes and pools. The main flow paths are subsurface connections between cryoconite holes, pools and riffles. The latter may become partially disconnected during hard freeze. The chemical composition of runoff at the outlet of Canada Glacier during January 2000 was dominated by Ca2+, HCO3– and sea salt (Na+ and Cl–), and became depleted in sea-salt and non-sea-salt (*) SO42– as the subsurface drainage system in a frozen pool-and-riffle system was flushed and the melting ice surface became depleted of overwinter dry deposited salts. Only during 2 days of hard freeze did sea salt and *SO42– increase in concentration together. Otherwise, sea salt and *SO42– declined while *Ca2+ and HCO3– increased. The latter ions are derived from the chemical weathering of sediment in frozen-topped pools, channels and cryoconite holes. It is inferred that the hydrochemical processes which occur in the vestigial, subsurface drainage system are the elution of ions from ice melt, dilution of these ions downstream by ice melt from vertical surfaces and the dissolution of dust, in subsurface pools, channels and/or cryoconite holes.

Passive seismology allows measurement of the structure of glaciers and ice sheets. However, most techniques used so far in this context are based on horizontally homogeneous media where parameters vary only with depth (1-D approximations), which are appropriate only for a subset of glaciers. Here, we analyze seismic noise records from three different types of glaciers (plateau, valley and avalanching glacier) to characterize the influence of the glacier geometry on the seismic wavefield. Using horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios, polarization analysis and modal analysis, we show that the plateau glacier and the valley glacier can be seen as 1-D, whereas the relatively small avalanching glacier shows 3-D effects due to its bed topography and the deep crevasses. In principle, the techniques proposed here might allow monitoring such crevasses and their depth, and thus to constrain a key parameter of avalanching and calving glacier fronts.

To assess the response of lake Freeze-up and break-up dates to changes in atmospheric forcing, a physically based computational model of the coupled lake, lake-ice, snow and atmosphere system has been developed. Model performance is validated using meteorological and lake-ice observations from Great Slave Lake in northern Canada (1991/92) and St Mary Lake in Glacier National Park, Montana, (1992/93). Model integrations with modified atmospheric forcing indicate that air-temperature changes of ±4°C can delay or speed up the freeze-up and break-up dates by as much as 4 weeks for St Mary Lake, and 2 weeks for Great Slave Lake. For both lakes, break-up date is more sensitive to air-temperature changes than is freeze-up. Changes of ±3/10 cloud-cover fraction produce a shifting of break-tip dates by 1 week. Changes in wind speeds of ± 3 m s−1 modify the maximum ice depth of the lakes by 5–10 cm. For Great Slave Lake, lower wind speeds produced a surface temperature low enough to delay the onset of break-up by 2 weeks.

Assessing the significance of current glacier loss on Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, demands a well-constrained temporal perspective. That context is provided by direct measurements, ancillary observations of the ice fields and the analyses of the ice cores collected from them. Ice retreat mechanisms observed there today are consistent with the preservation of the oldest ice, ~11.7 ka, in the central deepest part of the Northern Ice Field (NIF). This ice-core derived paleoclimate history published by Thompson and others (2002) is further confirmed by more recent paleoclimate records from tropical East Africa. Mounting evidence suggests that the (anticipated) loss of the entire NIF will be unprecedented within the past 10 000 years. New evidence bears directly on the mechanisms driving the current ice loss. Measurements made in 2000 on the NIF document that air temperature at 0.5 and 1.5 m above the surface remained below 5°C, while a surface temperature of 0.0°C was sustained for up to 8 hours d-1 under clear conditions, consistent with observations of melting on all Kilimanjaro summit ice fields. The linear relationship between oxygen and hydrogen isotopic ratios for all six ice cores drilled in 2000 lies very close to the global meteoric waterline and does not support sublimation (evaporation) as a major driver of ice loss today or in the past on Kilimanjaro.

The role of internal forces in determining the geometrical properties of local features such as leads and ridges in sea ice has been investigated. A description of the horizontal stress distribution in a granular material subject to two-dimensional deformations has been derived. The description yields expressions for the propagation of deformation characteristics in a granular deformation field with constant angle of internal friction. The characteristics are mathematical singularities interpreted as trajectories of constant state variables, e.g. ice concentration or ice thickness typified as leads, fractures, pressure and shear ridges. The derived descriptions are used to study the geometrical nature of curving and rectilinear lead patterns frequently observed in sea-ice deformation fields. An expression for the relationship between the arching (tangent angling) of characteristics and relative increase in shear (maximum shear stress) along them is derived. It is explained how the acute angle between large-scale rectilinear characteristics is related to the important mechanical property of the deformed material, the angle of internal friction. It is outlined how the derived results can be applied to study the horizontal distribution of internal forces in sea ice by using imagery data and stress measurements at one site only.

To monitor the snow-cover distribution in relation to meteorological conditions on high mountainous areas in Japan, NIED constructed a snow-observation network which it has operated for approximately 10 years. The network consists of seven pairs of stations, each comprising a mountainous site and a low-lying flatland site, from Hokkaido district in the north to San-in in the southwest. Data obtained include snow depth, snow weight, air temperature and global solar radiation. This study presents recent fluctuation of snow cover on mountainous areas for several recent winters in Japan. Most winters were warmer than average, but winter 1995/96 was normal, and maximum snow depths were recorded in high-elevation areas. Seventy-seven avalanche accidents occurred in winter 1995/96. The relationship between meteorological and snow conditions in mountainous areas and flatland areas was analyzed.

Disintegration of several ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula demonstrates a mechanism that involves the conversion of a contiguous ice shelf into an expanding plume of ice-shelf fragments that spreads rapidly across the ocean surface. The growth of surface area and energetic expansion are hypothesized to be driven by gravitational potential energy release associated with iceberg capsize and break-up. Here we investigate this process using a water tank filled with plastic icebergs scaled to represent a laboratory analogue of an expanding plume of ice-shelf fragments (icebergs). Our experiments suggest that hydrodynamic pressure within the water separating neighbouring icebergs is sufficient to couple the motion when their separation is comparable to the iceberg size. This allows one iceberg’s capsize to initiate a ‘domino-like’ effect, where the entire array will subsequently capsize in the same direction and expand across the water surface. Our experimental results motivate the suggestion that cooperative iceberg hydrodynamics is a process that enhances the expansion of ice-shelf fragment plumes during ice-shelf disintegration.

Vigorous flow of central regions of Ice Stream C, West Antarctica, near the UpC camp ended about the year 1830, based on analysis of a firn and ice core taken at the camp. Ice-stream flow was characterized by repeated fracturing and healing, probably subsurface, especially near the onset of streaming flow. High longitudinal stresses caused fracturing, recrystallization of the ice and elongation of bubbles, and enhanced densification rates of high-density firn indicating power-law-creep behavior.

Three ice type regimes at Ice Station Belgica (ISB), during the 2007 International Polar Year SIMBA (Sea Ice Mass Balance in Antarctica) expedition, were characterized and assessed for elevation, snow depth, ice freeboard and thickness. Analyses of the probability distribution functions showed great potential for satellite-based altimetry for estimating ice thickness. In question is the required altimeter sampling density for reasonably accurate estimation of snow surface elevation given inherent spatial averaging. This study assesses an effort to determine the number of laser altimeter ‘hits’ of the ISB floe, as a representative Antarctic floe of mixed first- and multi-year ice types, for the purpose of statistically recreating the in situ-determined ice-thickness and snow depth distribution based on the fractional coverage of each ice type. Estimates of the fractional coverage and spatial distribution of the ice types, referred to as ice ‘towns’, for the 5 km2 floe were assessed by in situ mapping and photo-visual documentation. Simulated ICESat altimeter tracks, with spot size ~70m and spacing ~170 m, sampled the floe’s towns, generating a buoyancy-derived ice thickness distribution. 115 altimeter hits were required to statistically recreate the regional thickness mean and distribution for a three-town assemblage of mixed first- and multi-year ice, and 85 hits for a two-town assemblage of first-year ice only: equivalent to 19.5 and 14.5 km respectively of continuous altimeter track over a floe region of similar structure. Results have significant implications toward model development of sea-ice sampling performance of the ICESat laser altimeter record as well as maximizing sampling characteristics of satellite/airborne laser and radar altimetry missions for sea-ice thickness.

Previous pollen analyses of ice cores from Devon and Ellesmere islands have contributed considerably to our knowledge of past climate in the Canadian High Arctic. In this case, in 1979, bulk (35–83 litres) water samples were melted down a hole 139 m deep, drilled to bedrock, 1.2 km from the top of the flow line in Agassiz Ice Cap in northern Ellesmere Island. Analysis of ten of these samples, plus some taken in very dirty ice from the melt tank during drilling 7 years ago, has yielded pollen concentrations that, together with the oygen-isotope (6) signatures, suggest the Agassiz Ice Cap began its growth during the last interglacial period. A discrepancy between melt-tank and bulk-sample pollen concentrations is believed to be due to a loss of pollen from the melt-tank samples during the drilling process.

Combinations of various numerical models and datasets with diverse observation characteristics have been used to assess the mass evolution of ice sheets. As a consequence, a wide range of estimates have been produced using markedly different methodologies, data, approximation methods and model assumptions. Current attempts to reconcile these estimates using simple combination methods are unsatisfactory, as common sources of errors across different methodologies may not be accurately quantified (e.g. systematic biases in models). Here we provide a general approach which deals with this issue by considering all data sources simultaneously, and, crucially, by reducing the dependence on numerical models. The methodology is based on exploiting the different space–time characteristics of the relevant ice-sheet processes, and using statistical smoothing methods to establish the causes of the observed change. In omitting direct dependence on numerical models, the methodology provides a novel means for assessing glacio-isostatic adjustment and climate models alike, using remote-sensing datasets. This is particularly advantageous in Antarctica, where in situ measurements are difficult to obtain. We illustrate the methodology by using it to infer Antarctica’s mass trend from 2003 to 2009 and produce surface mass-balance anomaly estimates to validate the RACMO2.1 regional climate model.

The variations and dynamics of the southern edge of Fuchs Ice Piedmont, Adelaide Island (67˚45’ 09’ S, 68˚55’ 04’ W), Antarctic Peninsula, are presented. The snow-covered surface of the glacier has been used since the 1960s for landing aeroplanes in support of British, and more recently Chilean, operations at nearby Teniente Carvajal station (formerly known as Adelaide T). In recent years, snow conditions in the runway area have progressively deteriorated, due to increasingly early summer melting. Radio-echo sounding, global positioning system and remotely sensed data have been analyzed for mapping the crevasse and ice velocity fields, as well as the surface and subglacial topography of the area. The results show that the runway area is located on a local ice divide surrounded by crevasses which are appearing on the glacier surface progressively earlier in the summer, presumably due to higher snowmelt and perhaps higher ice velocities, in response to regional atmospheric warming. In the near future, landing operations will be further affected as more crevasses will appear in the runway area if present warming trends persist. This situation affects all coastal areas in the Antarctic Peninsula, hence the need to search for possible new locations of crevasse-free runways at higher elevations.

An understanding of the mechanical behaviour of the basal zone of an ice mass is fundamental to understanding the overall dynamics of that ice mass. Despite the fact that debris-laden ice is found in the basal zones of many glaciers and ice sheets, its mechanical behaviour is only poorly understood. This paper attempts to expand our knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of debris-laden ice by examining the uniaxial compressive strength of debris-laden basal ice sampled from the snout of the Taylor Glacier, Antarctica.

The mechanical behaviour of debris-laden ice (debris content 5–20% by volume) under uniaxial compression, and the relationship between the behaviours of debris-laden basal ice and ‘clean’ glacier ice, is complex and variable. At the relatively warm temperatures at which uniaxial compressive strength tests were conducted in the field, debris-laden ice was generally weaker than clean glacier ice. At these temperatures, between 0° and −5°C, pressure melting was the dominant deformation mechanism in the debris-laden ice and cracking the dominant deformation mechanism in clean ice. At −25°C, however, debris-laden ice reached higher strengths than lite clean glacier ice and cracking was the dominant deformation mechanism in both ice types. The change in relationship between the strengths of debris-laden and clean ice with temperature is inferred to be attributable to the temperature dependence of the rate of pressure melting.

These results suggest that the dynamic effects and significance of the presence of a debris-laden ice layer in the basal zone of an ice mass are likely to be highly variable in space and time.

The Érosion torrentielle, neige et avalanche (Etna) unit of CEMAGREF and the Centre d’Etudes de la Neige of Météo-France have been working on snowdrift for 10 years. A numerical model was developed at CEMAGREF to simulate snowdrift (Naaim and others, 1998). To validate this model on in situ data, a high-altitude experimental site was developed, located at 2700 m a.s.l. at the Lac Blanc Pass near the Alpe d’Huez ski resort. It is a nearly flat area and faces winds primarily from north and south. After describing the experimental site, we present the processed data of winter 1998/99. First, we analyze the data from CEMAGREF’s acoustic snowdrift sensor. It is sensitive to snow depth and snow-particle type, so additional calibration is necessary. Nevertheless, it allowed us to study non- stationary aspects of drifting snow. An analysis of gust factors for wind and drifting snow indicates that strong wind-gust factors exist in the mountains, and that drifting snow is more important during a regular and strong wind episode than during high wind-gust periods. Therefore, the numerical model presented here uses only the recorded mean wind speed. The model, which attempts to reproduce several days of storm, takes into account the modification of input parameters (e.g wind speed) as a function of time. The comparison between numerical results and measurements for a given meteorological event shows good agreement.

The role of dynamics in modifying the response of the Arctic ice pack to inter-annually varying forcings and to climate perturbations is investigated using simulations from a two-dimensional ice model and a global climate model (GCM). Inter-annual variability in ice-covered area for 1985-93 is dominated by ice transport, and different transport regimes affect substantially the response of the ice pack to climate perturbations. The thermodynamic-only simulations are more sensitive to initial ice conditions, and respond less than the dynamk-thermodynamic model to small perturbations, but with a greater response to larger perturbations. Comparisons of GCM simulations that use different ice treatments highlights the importance of considering the distribution of ice thickness and extent in assessing climate-change responses.

Measurements of oxygen isotope ratio , major anions and cations, insoluble dust and tritium were performed every 4-6 cm along the Hercules Névé (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica) 22 m firn core. Concentration/depth profiles for H2O2, methane sulphonic acid and non-sea-salt sulphate (nssSO42-) were used to obtain a dating for the core by a multiparametric method involving a normalisation procedure and a linear combination of original profiles. This dating was compared with the and dust records to obtain a reliable identification of successive annual snow layers. The time-scale obtained from the seasonally varying signals was confirmed by an absolute date obtained from the 1965 thermonuclear atmospheric bomb test tritium peak. Around 70 years (1926-94) of annual accumulation rate data were obtained from the core. variations recorded along the core may be ascribed to seasonal variations of this parameter related to temperature variations.

The difficulty of using traditional direct mass-balance methods on large glaciers and ice caps requires the development of new methods. The objective of this paper is to evaluate whether a precise global positioning system (GPS) survey of geometry changes can be used to detect and monitor mass-balance changes. A joint project between Norway, Poland and Russia has investigated three high-altitude, large ice masses on Spitsbergen (Lomonosovfonna, Amundsenisen and Kongsvegen). The GPS survey was conducted using two methods.

1. (1) Static GPS survey of stakes drilled into the ice was used for flow-velocity and emergence-velocity measurements.

2. (2) Kinematic GPS survey was used to measure longitudinal profiles of surface elevation between the stakes.

The accuracy of the measurements has proved to be better than 5 cm in horizontal position and 10 cm in height. Comparisons show that the GPS survey is applicable and gives sufficient accuracy to replace traditional methods and is thus especially useful on large glaciers where traditional surveying by electronic distance meter is impossible.

During the Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition 1978–79, direct measurements of oscillations were carried out on 15 icebergs using a tiltmeter with an accuracy of ± 10 μrad. The amplitude of the oscillations varied from zero to about 103 μrad. The zero amplitude indicates that the berg was grounded and this was confirmed by echo-sounding from the ship. The observed oscillation periods ranged from 16 to 50 s. The observed oscillation periods and the calculated values based on the dimensions and mean density of the bergs were compared and the results are discussed. The flexure of the berg was measured with a theodolite and stakes. Relative movements exceeding the accuracy of the system (1 mm over 1 km distance) were not observed.
