The paper describes instrumentation, navigation methods, and interpretation problems from radio echo-sounding on parts of Jostedalsbreen. A map of the subglacial topography is presented. Ice thickness ranges from 60 m to 600 m with most sections between 150 m and 300 m.

A question is posed regarding the source of melt-water sediment. Does stagnant ice, functionally separated from active ice and gradually melting in place, contain enough rock debris to account for the volume of melt-water deposits known to exist in deglaciated areas, or does the volume of these deposits require a sediment source in close association with active ice from which the supply of rock debris is continually replenished?

Differing opinions on this question are implied in two contrasting models for deglaciation in the north-eastern United States. One, involving regional stagnation, assumes a sediment source in stagnant glacier ice; the other, involving stagnation-zone retreat, considers active ice the principal sediment source. This paper presents reported values of debris content in glacier ice and uses these values to calculate theoretical sediment volumes for a small drainage basin (1 300 km2) in northeastern U.S.A.

A typical value for the amount of rock debris in temperate glacier ice is 25% (volume) debris content in a 400 mm-thick basal debrisrich zone. This value gives a calculated sediment volume of 0.13 km3, about 6% of the estimated actual volume of melt-Hater sediment in the test basin. Comparison of calculated theoretical sediment volume with the estimated actual sediment volume in the basin indicates that stagnant ice is an inadequate sediment source, and that active ice, rather than stagnant ice, is probably the principal sediment source for melt-water deposits.

During April 1995, a field and aircraft experiment was conducted in central Alaska in support of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow-mapping project. The MODIS Airborne Simulator (MAS), a 50 channel spectroradiometer, was flown on board the NASA ER-2 aircraft. An objective of the mission was to determine the accuracy of mapping snow in different surface covers using an algorithm designed to map global snow cover after the launch of MODIS in 1998. The surface cover in this area of central Alaska is typically spruce, birch, aspen, mixed forest and muskeg. Integrated reflectance, Ri was calculated from the visible/near-infrared channels of the MAS sensor. The Ri was used to estimate different vegetation-cover densities because there is an inverse relationship between vegetation-cover density and albedo in snow-covered terrain. A vegetation-cover density map was constructed using MAS data acquired on 13 April 1995 over central Alaska. In the part of the scene that was mapped as having a vegetation-cover density of < 50%, the snow-mapping algorithm mapped 96.41% snow cover. These areas are generally composed of muskeg and mixed forests and include frozen lake. In the part of the scene that was estimated to have a vegetation-cover density of ≥50%, the snow-mapping algorithm mapped 71.23% snow cover. These areas are generally composed of dense coniferous or deciduous forests. Overall, the accuracy of the snow-mapping algorithm is > 87.41% for a 13 April MAS scene with a variety of surface covers (coniferous and deciduous and mixed forests, muskeg, tundra and frozen lake).

This paper presents improved geometric boundary conditions (surface elevation and ice thickness) required as inputs to calculations of the surface-velocity field for the Antarctic ice sheet. A comparison of the two-dimensional horizontal velocity field obtained on the basis of conservation of mass (balance velocity) with the diagnostic velocity field calculated with an ice-sheet model (dynamic velocity) may yield information on shortcomings in the way the ice-sheet model describes the ice flow. Here, the surface-elevation grid is described in detail, as it has been generated specifically for such a study and represents a new standard in accuracy and resolution for calculating surface slopes. The digital-elevation model was generated on a 10 km grid size from over 20 000 000 height estimates obtained from eight 35 d repeat cycles of ERS-1 radar-altimeter data. For surface slopes less than 0.4°, the accuracy is better than 1.5 m. In areas of high surface slope (coastal and mountainous regions), the altimeter measurements have been supplemented with data taken from the Antarctic Digital Database. South of 81.5°, data from the SPRI folio map have been used. The ice-thickness grid was produced from a combination of a redigitization of the SPRI folio and the original radio-echo-sounding flight lines. For areas of grounded ice, the elevation of the bed was estimated from surface elevation and ice thickness. Significant differences (in excess of 25% of ice thickness) were obtained between an earlier digitization of the folio bed-elevation map and the data set derived here. Furthermore, a new value of 25.6 × 106 km3 was obtained for the total volume of the ice sheet and ice shelves, which is a reduction of 12% compared with the original estimate derived during the compilation of the SPRI folio. These differences will have an important influence on the results obtained by numerical ice-sheet models.

Results from the first glaciological investigation of the Dunde ice cap demonstrate that a long, highly temporally resolvable climatic ice-core record is preserved in this ice cap. Measurements of stratigraphy, microparticle concentrations, liquid conductivity, and oxygen-isotope ratios from three snow pits in 1984 suggest that the annual accumulation is approximately 200 mm (water equivalent). Measurement of microparticle concentrations and conductivities of pit samples collected in 1986 confirm the existence of annual dust layers and an annual accumulation rate of ∼200 mm/year over the past 5 years. Bore-hole temperatures of –5.4°C at 30 m indicate that the ice cap is polar. Mono-pulse radar depth determinations yield an average thickness of 140 m, which (coupled with the smooth bedrock topography and the current accumulation rate) suggest that the Dunde ice cap should contain at least a 3000 year climatic record. A drilling program to recover that record from this subtropical location is planned for 1987.

Jakobshavn Isbræ is a major ice stream that drains the west-central Greenland ice sheet and becomes afloat in Jakobshavn Isfjord (69° N, 49° W), where it has maintained the world’s fastest-known sustained velocity and calving rate (7 kma−1) for at least four decades. The floating portion is approximately 12 km long and 6 km wide. Surface elevations and motion vectors were determined photogrammetrically for about 500 crevasses on the floating ice, and adjacent grounded ice, using aerial photographs obtained 2 weeks apart in July l985. Surface strain rates were computed from a mesh of 399 quadrilateral elements having velocity measurements at each corner. It is shown that heavy crevassing of floating ice invalidates the assumptions of linear strain theory that (i) surface strain in the floating ice is homogeneous in both space and time, (ii) the squares and products of strain components are nil, and (iii) first- and second-order rotation components are small compared to strain components. Therefore, strain rates and rotation rates were also computed using non-linear strain theory. The percentage difference between computed linear and non-linear second invariants of strain rate per element were greatest (mostly in the range 40–70%) where crevassing is greatest. Isopleths of strain rate parallel and transverse to flow and elevation isopleths relate crevassing to known and inferred pinning points.

The Greenland Sea is one of the few places in the World Ocean where deep convection takes place. The convection process is initiated by a density increase originating from rapid cooling and/or a salt flux to the upper layer of the ocean due to brine rejection from ice formation (Rudels 1990; Visbeck and others, 1995). The predominant ice types in the Greenland Sea are frazil/grease ice and pancake ice. A numerical model has been developed relating ice formation and decay of these ice types as observed by the SMMR and SSM/I microwave radiometers and evaluating their contribution to salt redistribution in the Greenland Sea. The model has been used to calculate spatial distribution of the annual integrated net salt flux to the Greenland Sea from ice production and advection for the period 1979−97.

Annual mass-balance measurements have been made at a number of glaciers in Norway since the beginning of the 1960s, A detailed and reliable map is necessary as a base for field work and more than twenty glacier maps have been constructed photogrammetrically at scales of 1:10 000 or 1:20 000 since 1952. For some of the glaciers more than one map has been constructed and changes in glacier volume can be calculated, provided the maps have sufficient accuracy.

For the glaciers, Nigardsbreen, Hellstugubreen, and Gråsubreen, two or more good maps are available and these form a good basis for comparisons and calculations of changes in volume between the years when the air photographs were taken.

Comparisons have been made for Gråsubreen between 1968 and 1984, for Hellstugubreen between 1968 and 1980, and for Nigardsbreen between 1964 and 1984.

The calculations are made by placing a 100 m grid on the glacier maps and comparing the altitude for corresponding points. The changes in height are regarded as representative for the 0.01 km2 glacier areas represented by each point.

Results from the investigation have been used to check the accuracy in cumulative mass balance for corresponding periods.

Repeated air photography, at intervals of 5—10 years, can be used in the future to find the cumulative mass balance for a great number of glaciers at lower cost than “normal” mass-balance work.

The mass balance of Antarctica is one of the crucial factors for determining sea-level change in a warming climate. The marginal zones of the continent, namely the ice shelves, are most sensitive to climate change. During the 2009/10 austral summer an extensive glaciological field campaign was carried out on Fimbulisen, an ice shelf in East Antarctica, to investigate its recent surface mass balance. Shallow (10–18 m) firn cores were drilled and accumulation rates and stable-isotope ratios determined. For firn-core dating, two different methods were compared: (1) seasonal variations of stable oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O), and (2) dielectric profiling, including using the volcanic eruptions of Pinatubo, Philippines (1991), and El Chichόn, Mexico (1982), as time markers. The mean annual accumulation for the period 1992–2009 ranges from 298 to 349 mmw.e. a–1. The interannual variability at the drilling sites is >30%. Accumulation rates show a weak decreasing trend during the past 20–30 years, which is statistically significant only for one of the cores. Stable-isotope ratios were compared to the snowfall temperature of Neumayer station. Neither the temperatures nor the δ18O values show any trend for the investigated time period.

Summer–autumn monthly sea-ice concentration anomaly (SICA) fields in Antarctica obtained from satellite data for the period 1979–2009 were analysed with Varimax-rotated T-mode principal component analysis (PCA). the first three PCA scores described the SICA spatial behaviour and explained 38.07% of the total variance. the related atmospheric circulation characteristics were analysed using 850 hPa height and surface air-temperature anomalies for the months clustered by the corresponding SICA composites, which were based on PCA loadings above a ±0.3 threshold. the principal characteristics of SICA can be seen between the Ross and Weddell Seas, areas that remained ice-covered during the analysis period. Elsewhere around Antarctica, small distinct characteristics occur mostly in embayments. the leading summer–autumn SICA pattern shows a structure with two centres of equal sign located one over the Weddell and the other over the Ross Sea–southwest Pacific Ocean sector and a centre of opposite sign over the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas. the second SICA pattern is represented by a dipole over the Weddell Sea as a result of an increase (decrease) in sea-ice concentration in the northern sector (positive phase) and a decrease (increase) in the southern region, together with a positive (negative) centre over the Ross and Amundsen Seas. the latter pattern is characterized by equal-sign anomalies on both sides of the Antarctic Peninsula and opposite-sign centres all around Antarctica with the highest intensity over the Ross Sea.

Sediment yields and glacial erosion rates are evaluated for four Norwegian glaciers during the years 1989-93. Annual erosion rates were determined from measurements of sediment load and water discharge in glacial meltwater rivers. The mean sediment yield and the corresponding erosion rate of the valley glaciers Engabreen and Nigardsbreen were found to be 456 t km−2 year−1 (0.168 mm year−1) and 210 t km−2 year−1 (0.078 mm year−1), respectively. A small and slow-moving cirque glacier Øvre Beiarbre yielded a rate of 482 t km−2 year−1 (0.178 mm year−1), and the sub-polar Svalbard glacier Brøggerbreen yielded 613 t km−2 year−1 (0.226 mm year−1). The erosion rates are low compared to glaciers elsewhere. There are also considerable variations in sediment yields at each glacier from year to year. However, different factors are found to control the variability on each individual glacier. Analysis of the relationship between water discharge and sediment concentration in meltwater rivers suggests that changes in subglacial drainage systems cause variations in sediment availability and the way sediments are melted out from the ice. When water pressure drops, the drainage system in fast-moving, thick valley glaciers deforms at a more rapid rate than in thin, slow-moving ones. New volumes of debris-laden ice are thus more readily available for melting when water pressure next increases. Beneath the thin, slow-moving Øvre Beiarbre, single years with high transport rates and evacuation of sediment are followed by periods of low availability lasting for 2 years or longer. It is suggested that this pattern results from exhaustion of sediment in a stable drainage system, with more sediment becoming available when the position of the subglacial drainage system is changed.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys in Scharffenbergbotnen valley, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, complement earlier, relatively sparse data on the ice-flow dynamics and mass-balance distribution of the area. The negative net surface mass balance in the valley appears to be balanced by the inflow. The flow regime in Scharffenbergbotnen defines four separate mass-balance areas, and about 60 times more ice enters the valley from the northwestern entrance than via the narrow western gate. We formalize and compare three methods of determining both the surface age gradient of the blue ice and the dip angles of isochrones in the firn/blue-ice transition zone: observed and dated radar internal reflections, a geometrical model of isochrones, and output from a flowline model. The geometrical analysis provides generally applicable relationships between ice surface velocity and surface age gradient or isochrone dip angle.

Glaciers are permeated by liquid veins that line the triple junctions between ice grains and act as conduits for material transport. The density difference between water and ice produces a hydraulic gradient that drives liquid flow down towards the glacier bed. We investigate how variations in this transport rate are manifest in the lower regions of a glacier that floats on a subglacial reservoir. When the temperature rises towards the glacier bed, the associated permeability increase leads to more rapid fluid transport; internal melting supplies the changing flow. A reduction in hydraulic gradient results from surface energy effects, and causes a decreasing transport rate near the base; hence, freezing occurs within the polycrystalline ice. For representative values of the heat flux, soluble impurity loading and grain-size, the downward flux peaks at approximately 1–100mma–1 several tens of centimeters above the glacier bed. Beneath this level, the effects of surface energy control the fluid transport and cause the flow to reverse directions, pulling liquid upwards into the polycrystalline ice so that the flow does not introduce glacial material into the underlying reservoir.

This paper reports on the measurement of the viscosity coefficient of very light artificial snow with H. density of < 100 kg m−3. The temperature dependency on the viscosity coefficients of the snow was also obtained, and these results were applied to the problem of snow creep. General comparison between experimental and computed results shows good agreement, but differences between the two creep flows along the slope indicate that low-density snow near the freezing point should be considered as an orthotopic material.

Microstructural changes in three sets of experiments involving crystallographic slip in anisotropic polycrystalline ice are described and interpreted with the aid of computer models. The development of microstructure was followed using time-lapse photography and transmitted light observations with deformation undertaken in plane strain and at a temperature of approximately –1°C. The deformation within a grain aggregate that accompanies axial shortening is always heterogeneous on a grainscale. The extent of inhomogeneity varies depending on the pre-existing grain structure and the way it can accommodate intragranular slip. Grain interactions are extremely important in determining the bulk deformation and the degree of grain-boundary migration. A consequence of shortening of the aggregate is the formation of high stresses between neighbouring grains and under the appropriate conditions there may be either grain-boundary migration or melting at these sites. Where a sample undergoes translation and shear during deformation, anisotropic grains in the appropriate orientation undergo bending. A buckle instability may then develop and much of the strain is accommodated by grains in easy-glide orientations. In such situations, the ice undergoes extensive recrystallization and grain growth that is concentrated in the areas of greatest buckling.

In many high-latitude areas, slushflows occur frequently during the snowmelt period but information on the initiation mechanism is rare. Field observations and measurements of slushflows in northwestern Spitsbergen and in northern Sweden demonstrate the role of meltwater accumulation and the hydraulic pressure gradient in the release process. Snow metamorphism is revealed to be of minor importance in the observed events. The monitoring of water-pressure development in a saturated snow cover demonstrates that preferred release areas are within low-gradient valley sections, where meltwater inflow is higher than outflow.

Slushflows consist of mudflow-like flowage of water-saturated snow along stream courses. They represent transitional processes between fluvial floods and avalanches. On the other hand, they possess unique characteristics concerning release and movement. The comparative evaluation of definition items for fluvial floods, slushflows and avalanches offers hasic data suitable for a risk assessment.

Visible and near-infrared spectral reflectances of snow and superimposed ice were measured in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, during the 1992-93 austral summer. Spectral-reflectance curves of both snow and superimposed ice remain high ( > 80%) in the visible region. A pronounced decrease in reflectance appears in the near-infrared, especially for superimposed ice. Superimposed ice with a 1 cm thick surface layer of ice-bound snow crystals had a considerably higher reflectance than superimposed ice containing only a few snow crystals. Furthermore, these data prove that snow and superimposed ice reflect solar radiation specularly and suggest that the anisotropy strengthens with increasing wavelengths. Integrated in-situ reflectances corresponding to Landsat TM bands 1-4 show that TM band 1 is least affected, whereas TM band 4 is most affected by anisotropy. Furthermore, the anisotropy increases with increasing off-nadir viewing angles up to an angle corresponding to 90°-θs(θs= solar elevation). For a 15° off-nadir sensor-observation angle, the average snow reflectance for TM bands 1--4 is about 10% higher than at nadir. Similarly, the apparent reflectance can be more than 50% higher than the nadir reflectance for larger observation angles. Consequently, if satellite-derived reflectances are going to be considered as absolute values, a topographic-correction model is needed to correct for the effects of anisotropy.

Observations of drifting snow were carried out at Mizuho Station (70°42'S, 44°20'E, 2230 m above sea level), East Antarctica, in 1982. Drift flux was proportional to about the 8th power of wind velocity above 1 m and about the 4th power below 0.1 m, while snow drift transport rate was proportional to about the 5th power. For drift flux at 1 m height, the power had a temperature dependence, decreasing above -20 °C. Visibility was proportional to about the -8th power of wind velocity; this is explained by the power relation between drift flux and wind velocity. The repose angle of drifting snow particles was observed by the inclination of a cone-shaped deposit on a disk; it was more than 80° when snow was falling and less than 80° without precipitation. The fall velocity of drifting snow particles, obtained by time-marked trajectories of particles, was between 0.3 and 0.9 m/s, and depended on wind velocity and snow particle shape.

Assessing climate change and its effects on the cryosphere is important, and individual proxies are commonly used for such assessments. We have investigated the possibility of combining glacier mass balance and tree-ring data to better understand regional climate variability in Scandinavia. There are substantial differences between climate information in mass-balance and tree-ring data. Summer balance (bS) is strongly related to summer temperature, while winter balance (bW) is less readily interpreted in terms of a climate signal. Tree rings are good summer temperature proxies, but due to the complexity of tree growth factors (e.g. the effect of the previous winter’s climate) tree-ring records do not exclusively represent summer temperatures. Combining bS and tree-ring records will not likely yield additional summer climate information. The relationship of mass balance with the Arctic Oscillation is stronger than with the North Atlantic Oscillation, especially for northernmost Sweden, whereas no such correlations were found for tree-ring data. The agreement between bN records from both maritime south-central Norway and continental northernmost Sweden and tree-ring data from Jämtland, in a maritime/continental climate transition zone, suggests possibilities to combine mass-balance and tree-ring data to provide information about climate over the entire year on interannual timescales.

The retention and release of liquid water in glacierized basins was modelled with a conceptual, semi-distributed model of the water and ice balance designed for long-term averages with monthly resolution for 100 m elevation bands. Here we present the components of the liquid water balance of 86 mostly glacierized basins on either side of the main Alpine divide between 10 and 13°E in the period 1998–2006 and compare them with the records of 30 basins monitored from 1970 to 1997. Basin average of liquid water retention has maxima in excess of 100 mm per month in May, often followed by maximum release when the retaining snow matrix melts. Glacier storage peaks in August partly due to ice melt and the ensuing filling of the englacial reservoirs and partly on account of a precipitation maximum. These two components combined to a common maximum of storage in summer in the first period 1970–97 and developed two distinct maxima in the warmer period 1998–2006. A further maximum of liquid water storage that was often found in October is most likely due to a peak in precipitation in the southern part of the study region.
