Wintertime (April–September) area estimates of the Terra Nova Bay polynya (TNBP), Antarctica, based on satellite microwave radiometry are compared with in situ observations of water salinity, temperature and currents at a mooring in Terra Nova Bay in 1996 and 1997. In 1996, polynya area anomalies and associated anomalies in polynya ice production are significantly correlated with salinity anomalies at the mooring. Salinity anomalies lag area and/or ice production anomalies by about 3 days. Up to 50% of the variability in the salinity at the mooring position can be explained by area and/or ice production anomalies in the TNBP for April–September 1996. This value increases to about 70% when considering shorter periods like April–June or May–July, but reduces to 30% later, for example July–September, together with a slight increase in time lag. In 1997, correlations are smaller, less significant and occur at a different time lag. Analysis of ocean currents at the mooring suggests that in 1996 conditions were more favourable than in 1997 for observing the impact of descending plumes of salt-enriched water formed in the polynya during ice formation on the water masses at the mooring depth.

Iceland’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull, has been the test site for a series of airborne and satellite remote-sensing studies since 1966. Various types of image data acquired by the Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) and the Seasat Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) are assessed for their value to glaciological studies of Vatnajökull. A low Sun angle winter 1973 MSS band 7 Landsat image of Vatnajökull provides information about the distribution and size of subglacial volcanic calderas, cauldron subsidence caused by subglacial geothermal and (or) intrusive volcanic activity, and delineation of the probable position of surface ice divides. Two types of multi-spectral digital enhancements were applied to a late summer 1973 MSS image of Vatnajökull. The first type was used to prepare a planimetric base map showing the location of the principal surface features and an inventory of 38 named outlet glaciers, one internal ice cap (Öraefajökull), and two detached glaciers which comprise this complex ice cap, and to measure its area (8300 km2). The second type provides information about the position of the snow line at the approximate end of the 1973 melt season, the areas encompassed by the ice fades of the ablation area and the slush zone and wet-snow facies/percolation facies of the accumulation area. More information about the surface morphology of Vatnajökull was available from the Sow Sun angle winter and the digitally enhanced summer Landsat image of the ice cap than from the Seasat SAR image.

The seasonal snow cover in the Tien Shan mountains is characterized by low density, low liquid-water content and low temperature. It is known as typical dry snow. Large temperature gradients in the basal layer of the snow cover exist throughout the entire period of snow accumulation, and depth hoar is therefore extremely well-developed. Full-depth depth-hoar avalanches, however, seldom occur. Avalanches in the Tien Shan mountains are mostly loose snow avalanches. Although normally not large in size, they are the most dangerous type. The occurrence of hazardous avalanches shows cycles of about ten years because of periodic climatic variations.

In this paper, some features of energy balance terms will be discussed in respect to the melting capacity available at the surface of Vernagtferner in the Oetztal Alps. The climatic pattern of summer 1982 is described, then the method of calculating individual terms (shortwave and longwave radiation balance, sensible and latent heat flux) from records of radiation, air temperature, humidity and wind. The results of these calculations are discussed for ice, firn and snow areas of the glacier. In particular the relationship between the four terms is shown for 15 July 1982, the day with highest meltwater production in 1982. These values are then compared with the maximum values of the individual terms, showing that the highest meltwater production is caused by the combination of quite high values of the individual terms, but not of the absolutely highest ones. The importance of sensible heat flux for meltwater production in 1982 is discussed: comparison between meltwater production for the whole summer and measured runoff shows reasonable accordance.

A digital elevation model (DEM) of the surface of the Antarctic ice sheet is compared with a simple two-dimensional ice-flow model to illuminate gross distortions (>500 m) of the ice-surface elevation. We use a DEM derived from ERS-1 satellite altimetry, airborne data and TWERLE balloon data. This is compared with an ice-sheet elevation model generated by applying theoretical surface elevations, calculated for two-dimensional ice flow, to isolines of distance from the grounding line (continentality). The model is scaled using only one parameter, to match the measured surface elevation at Dome Argus. The model is far from rigorous, violating continuity conditions, ignoring variations in surface mass balance and temperature, and assuming uniform basal conditions. However, the comparison of model and observed surface elevations is illuminating in terms of the behaviour of the ice sheet at a continental scale. Across the ice sheet the rms difference between modelled elevation and the DEM is around 300 m, but much of this results from isolated areas of much greater disagreement. We ascribe these gross differences to the effects of basal conditions. in four areas, the observed surface is more than 500 m higher than the modelled surface. Most of these are immediately upstream of substantial areas of rock outcrop and are caused by the damming effect of these mountain ranges. in nine areas, the measured surface is more than 500 m lower than predicted. Eight of these areas, in West Antarctica and the Lambert Glacier basin, are associated with suspected areas of basal sliding. The ninth is an area of 250 000 km2 in East Antarctica not previously noted as having unusual flow characteristics, but for which very few-data exist. We speculate that this area results from unusual basal conditions resulting in a low-profile ice sheet. A low-profile ice sheet of this size with in the East Antarctic ice sheet indicates that basal conditions are perhaps more variable than previously thought.

Historical records, photographs, maps and measurements were used to determine changes in the length, geometry and volume of Rabots Glaciär, Sweden, in response to a ∼1°C warming that occurred early in the 20th century. The glacier’s initial rate of retreat from its 1910 maximum was ~2.0 m a–1. After a sharp increase to ∼11.7 m a–1 between 1933 and 1946, the mean retreat rate decreased to ∼5.5 m a-1 between 1946 and 1959. Thereafter the rate of retreat increased to ∼11.0 m a-1 and has remained relatively constant to the present time. Concomitant decreases in ice volume were estimated to be 77.3 × 106m3 between 1910 and 1959, 51.1 × 106m3 between 1959 and 1980, at least 10.4 × 106m3 between 1980 and 1989, and 14.4 × 106m3 between 1989 and 2003. The total volume change over the last 93 years is estimated at ∼153.2 × 106m3 corresponding to 1.6 × 106m3a–1.. The magnitude of the ongoing changes in length and volume suggests that Rabots Glaciär has not yet completed its response to the earlier climatic warming. In contrast, several nearby glaciers, most notably Storglaciären, have completed their adjustments and established new steady-state profiles as a result of having shorter response times.

A helicopter-mounted low frequency ice-radar has been developed for the depth sounding of temperate glaciers. The radar consists of standard transmitter and digital receiver equipment. The long antennae are supported on a special aluminium and fibreglass construction which hangs 20 m below the helicopter. The radar has been used on Engabreen, an outlet glacier of the Svartisen Ice Cap in northern Norway, where ice thicknesses of up to 350 m were obtained. The results have been used to construct a map of bed topography of the lower part of Engabreen. This map is largely consistent with ice thickness data obtained by drilling.

Mean values of the oxygen-isotope ratio relative to standard mean ocean water (δ18O, in ‰) reported for 46 sites on the Greenland ice sheet are compiled together with data on mean annual surface temperature, latitude, δ18O elevation, and mean annual shortest distance to the open ocean denoted by the 10% sea-ice concentration boundary. Stepwise regression analyses, with δ18O as the dependent variable, define two robust models. In the forward mode at the 99.9% confidence level, only temperature enters the model. In the backward mode at the 95% confidence level, only temperature, latitude and distance to the open ocean remain in the model. Inversions of the models on the basis of 160 gridpoint locations 100 km apart in the area delimited by the surface equilibrium line produce four contoured distributions of δ18O. Two distributions are based on the bivarrate model and two on the multivariate model. The second distribution for each model is obtained substituting mean annual surface-temperature values obtained from the Nimbus-7 Temperature Humidity Infrared Radiometer (THIR) database. All four distributions are considered valid, and differences between them are evaluated using contoured anomaly maps. It is suggested that the inversion of the multivariate model using THIR data provides the more reliable pattern for studies of atmospheric advection or for the derivation of ice-flow adjustments for δ18O series obtained from deep-core or ablation-zone sites.

It is known that regions of warm- and cold-based ice sheets modify and protect the Landscape, respectively. Investigations on a small plateau-top ice field, Øksfjordjøkelen (40 km2), in north Norway have indicated that this situation can exist at a small scale. Margins of the plateau, exposed by ice retreat since AD 1850, provide evidence of a complex basal thermal regime: in some localities blockfields with patterned ground and, in others, abraded and quarried bedrock forelands have been exposed. Exposed blockfields are interpreted as areas covered by cold-based, non-erosive ice. In areas of sliding ice, substantial quantities of erosion are evident. Locally, bedrock shows three joint sets intersecting which produce joint-bounded blocks. Removal of these blocks during the Little Ice Age has produced small rock steps about 5–10 m long and 1–3 m high. Present-day basal sliding velocities at the snout are low (15 m a–1) and ice thickness over the whole glacier is < 190 m. Simple modelling for block removal shows a direct relationship with glacier-sliding velocity and inverse relationship with ice thickness. Preglacial weathering is shown to influence the size of removable blocks.

The chemistry of recently deposited snow sampled in 1982–83 along a 430 km coast-interior traverse in Terre Adelie, East Antarctica, is reported. In addition, three firn samples, covering the same time period (1959 to 1969) and collected on the traverse at D 55, D 80 and Dome C stations, respectively at 200, 430 and 1070 km from the sea, are also studied. Concentrations of major soluble impurities (H+, , Na+, K+, Cl−, and ) were determined by ion chromatography (except H+ which was titrated) on more than 200 samples. Conditions of sampling and analysis were carefully controlled in order to avoid contamination problems. A balanced ionic budget was generally obtained for each of the samples. For stations occupying an intermediary position between the coastal areas and the central Antarctic plateau, our results demonstrate that the two major impurities are H2SO4 and HNO3. HCl is also present, but at a lower level of concentration; the sea-salt contribution is dominant only at the most coastal sites (within 40 km) of the sea. The degree of neutralization of the snow acidity by NH3 is always very low as indicated by the values of content. The mean concentrations of H2SO4 along the traverse are relatively constant whereas an increase of the HNO3 concentrations is observed when going inland. It decreases, however, in most central areas. These results are discussed in relation to the glaciochemical data published for other locations on the Antarctic plateau, in particular the sulphate concentrations which depend strongly on explosive volcanic activity.

The surface energy budget over the Antarctic sea ice from 8 April 2016 through 26 November 2016 are presented. From April to October, Sensible heat flux (SH) and subsurface conductive heat flux (G) were the heat source of surface while latent heat flux (LE) and net radiation flux (Rn) were the heat sink of surface. Our results showed larger downward SH (due to the warmer air in our site) and upward LE (due to the drier air and higher wind speed in our site) compared with SHEBA data. However, the values of SH in N-ICE2015 campaign, which located at a zone with stronger winds and more advection of heat in the Arctic, were comparable to our results under clear skies. The values of aerodynamic roughness length (z0m) and scalar roughness length for temperature (z0h), being 1.9 × 10−3 m and 3.7 × 10−5 m, were suggested in this study. It is found that snow melting might increase z0m. Our results also indicate that the value of log(z0h/z0m) was related to the stability of stratification. In addition, several representative parameterization schemes for z0h have been tested and a couple of schemes were found to make a better performance.

During two winters, 1990–92, the dynamic structures of snow avalanches were studied in western Norway. Artificially released wet-snow avalanches ran down the avalanche chute and stopped in front of the retaining dam. Running velocity distributions were obtained not only by video tape recorder, but also by various other recording instruments. Internal velocity was derived for the last avalanche by frequency analysis of impact pressure and optical sensor data. The vertical velocity shear of the avalanche flow has been estimated to be in the range 1–10 s−1.

The mechanisms of Antarctic ice deformation are discussed. Diffusional flow (Nabarro-Herring or Coble creep) seems to dominate creep for the first 905 m near Dome C. Formation mechanisms of single-maximum fabrics are examined. Dislocation creep does not explain the preferred c-axis orientation observed in the Antarctic ice sheet. The quantitative effects of crystallographic orientation on strain-rate are given. The activation energy for dislocation creep was found to be 78 kJ mol−1 between -7.2°C and -30°C. Rate-limiting mechanisms are discussed.

We quantify the magnitude of millennial-scale glacial erosion at Engabreen, a temperate glacier in coastal northern Norway, using the in situ cosmogenic nuclides carbon-14 (14C) and beryllium-10 (10Be) in bedrock exposed recently by glacial retreat. Nuclide concentrations show no dependence on distance down or across the valley. As such, resulting Holocene erosion depths along two transects perpendicular to glacier flow are highly variable with no systematic distribution, ranging from 0.10 to 2.95 m. We observed 14C–10Be ratios elevated above the production ratio in samples of abraded bedrock, which is counter to the expectation for surfaces covered during the Holocene and exposed only recently. Muon reactions produce nuclides at greater depths than do spallation reactions and 14C at production rates at higher than those of 10Be, resulting in 14C–10Be ratios that increase with depth. Therefore, elevated 14C–10Be ratios indicate that sampled sites were deeply plucked during recent cover, the Little Ice Age in this case, and then rapidly abraded prior to retreat. Our results suggest that, while glacial erosion can generate a u-shaped valley profile over long periods of time (e.g., 105–107 years), the discontinuous nature of glacial plucking produces spatially variable patterns of erosion over shorter millennial timescales.

A new dating of the Bølling-Allerød period (Greenland Interstadial event 1) in the GRIP ice core is presented. Newly measured profiles of δD and δ18O, as well as existing profiles of Ca2+, NH4+, dust and NO3–, have been used for the dating. As seasonal variations can be observed in all six components, it was possible to simultaneously count annual layers in the profiles in order to obtain a multi-parameter dating. The new data presented in this study include a total of 36.85 m of stable-isotope profiles of 1 cm resolution from five sections of the Bølling-Allerød period in the GRIP ice core. The annual-layer counting suggests a duration of the complete Bølling-Allerød period, as revealed in the GRIP ice core, of 1627 ± 52 years. This estimate contrasts with an earlier finding from the same GRIP ice core, where the Bølling-Allerød was found to span 2168 years (Hammer, in press). This estimate was based on layer counting, using dust concentrations only.

We compare observed temperature variations in Antarctica with climate-model runs over the last century. The models used are three coupled global climate models (GCMs) — the UKMO, the CSIRO and the MPI forced by the CO2 increases observed over the last century, and an atmospheric model experiment forced with observed sea-surface temperatures and sea-ice extents over the last century. Despite some regions of agreement, in general the GCM runs appear to be incompatible with each other and with the observations, although the short observational record and high natural variability make verification difficult. One of the best places for a more detailed study is the Antarctic Peninsula where the density of stations is higher and station records are longer than elsewhere in Antarctica. Observations show that this area has seen larger temperature rises than anywhere else in Antarctica. None of the three GCMs simulate such large temperature changes in the Peninsula region, in either climate-change runs radiatively forced by CO2 increases or control runs which assess the level of model variability.

Parameters critical to slushflow release have been studied during 11 winters in Rana, North Norway. Slushflows occurred during 16 periods within the research areas and during another 13 in the district. A noticeable rise of water in snowpack was registered 49 times. Field predictors of acute-hazard and critical water influxes related to different snowpack conditions are identified. Threshold values for acute-hazard prediction based on five main combinations of winter snowpack and current rise of water in snowpack were identified and checked against the registered slushflows, with promising results. Cohesionless new snow and coarse-grained snow are most liable to start flowing. A snowpack reinforced by layers of crust and ice is normally the most stable. An automatic system for supervising slushflow hazard based on the defined criteria is presented. The system can be tailored for any location and problem owner.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of Taylor Valley, Antarctica, were acquired in January 1999 in coordination with ground-based measurements to assess SAR detection of the snowline on dry polar glaciers. We expected significant penetration of the radar wave resulting in an offset of the SAR-detected snowline relative to the true snowline. Results indicated no detectable displacement of the SAR snowline. Snow depths of 15 cm over ice can be detected on the imagery. We hypothesize that the optical depth of thin snowpacks is enhanced by reflection and refraction of the radar beam by internal snow layers. The enhanced optical depth increases the volume scattering, and thereby enhances backscatter sufficiently to be detected by the SAR. Consequently, SAR imagery may be used directly to image the position of transient snowlines in dry polar regions.

We test the ability of a two-dimensional flux model to simulate polynya events with narrow open-water zones by comparing model results to ice-thickness and ice-production estimates derived from thermal infrared Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations in conjunction with an atmospheric dataset. Given a polynya boundary and an atmospheric dataset, the model correctly reproduces the shape of an 11 day long event, using only a few simple conservation laws. Ice production is slightly overestimated by the model, owing to an underestimated ice thickness. We achieved best model results with the consolidation thickness parameterization developed by Biggs and others (2000). Observed regional discrepancies between model and satellite estimates might be a consequence of the missing representation of the dynamic of the thin-ice thickening (e.g. rafting). We conclude that this simplified polynya model is a valuable tool for studying polynya dynamics and estimating associated fluxes of single polynya events.
