A linear relation between total gas content in ice and the elevation of ice formation (i.e. pore close-off) was obtained from seven shallow ice cores in Mizuho Plateau, Antarctica. The derived relation was applied to the vertical profile of total gas content in a 700 m long ice core at Mizuho Station. A general trend of gradual increase in total gas content was observed from 600 to 200 m in depth, from which toward the upper layer it showed a steep increase. After eliminating the effect of down-slope flow of ice around Mizuho Station, it was estimated that the thickness of the ice sheet decreased by about 350 m at maximum during the last 2000 years. This tendency also appears in the δ18O profile of the same ice core.

In 2005, two ice cores with lengths of 58.7 and 57.6 m respectively to bedrock were recovered from the Miaoergou flat-topped glacier (43°03′19″ N, 94°19′21″ E; 4512 m a.s.l.), eastern Tien Shan. 210Pb dating of one of the ice cores (57.6 m) was performed, and an age of AD 1851 ± 6 at a depth of 35.2 mw.e. was determined. For the period AD 1851-2005, a mean annual net accumulation of 229 ± 7 mm w.e. a–1 was calculated. At the nearby oasis city of Hami (~80 km from the Miaoergou flat-topped glacier) the annual precipitation rate is 38 mm w.e. a–1, hence glacial meltwater is a major water supply for local residents. The surface activity concentration of 210Pbex was found to be ~400 mBq kg–1, which is higher than observed at other continental sites such as Belukha, Russia, and Tsambagarav, Mongolia, which have surface activity concentrations of 280 mBq kg–1. The 210Pb dating agrees well with the chronological sequence deduced from the annual-layer counting resulting from the seasonalities of d18O and trace metals for the period AD 1953-2005, and ^-activity horizons resulting from atmospheric nuclear testing during the period AD 1962-63. We conclude that 210Pb analysis is a suitable method for obtaining a continuous dating of the Miaoergou ice core for ~160 years, which can also be applied to other ice cores recovered from the mountains of western China.

Avalanche hazard maps of high accuracy are difficult to produce. For land-use planning and management purposes, a good knowledge of extreme run-out zones and frequencies of avalanches is required. In the present work, vegetation recognition (especially focused on Pinus uncinata trees) and dendrochronological techniques are used to characterize avalanches that have occurred in historical times, helping to determine both the extent of large or extreme avalanches and their occurrence in time. Vegetation was studied at the Canal del Roc Roig (eastern Pyrenees, Spain) avalanche path. The avalanches descending this path affect the railway that reaches the Vall de Núria resort and the run-up to the opposite slope. During winter 1996, two important avalanches affecting this path were well documented. These are compared with the results of the vegetation study, consisting of an inventory of flora, the recording of vegetation damages along eight transverse profiles at different altitudes on the path and a dendrochronological sampling campaign. The data obtained contributed to a characterization of the predominant snow accumulation in the starting zone, the 1996 avalanches and the range of frequencies of large avalanches. Also, traces of avalanches that increase the path mapped in the avalanche paths map published by the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya in 2000 were identified, improving the initial existing information.

The ice divide on an ice sheet is a special place on the ice sheet, where the velocity and stress distributions are different from those found just two ice thicknesses from the ice divide. A two-dimensional thermo-mechanical model has been used to model the flow near the ice divide in central Greenland. The results show that the surface strain-rates are increased by 50% of the values found 15 km down-stream and that the basal temperatures rise by 3°C. Estimates of a depth–age distribution in the vicinity of Crête show that the isochrones rise at the dome. The model calculations predict 1600 m of Holocene ice, 1000 m of Wisconsin ice, and 400 m of ice older than 115kyear. 15 km down-stream from the dome, the thickness of ice older than 115 kyear will be reduced by 50%. In these calculations it has been assumed that the ice thickness at the dome is time-invariant. The existence of the old ice depends on the basal temperature. The estimates of the basal temperature depend strongly on past accumulation rates and on the geothermal heat flux but the ice has most likely been below the pressure-melting point throughout the last glacial period.

Regions of Japan facing the Sea of Japan have some of the world’s deepest seasonal snowpack, although air temperatures averaged over the coldest winter months (January-February) are above 0°C in this mid-altitude zone (35–40˚ N). Therefore, even a slight temperature increase is likely to drastically decrease the snow depth in this area by changing the precipitation form from snow to rain. In this study, to enhance understanding of winter precipitation conditions, we introduce the winter precipitation curve (WPC), which plots the distribution of winter precipitation (December-February) against the corresponding air temperature using hourly data. We then examine the relationship between the WPC and regional climate conditions. The WPC was classified into two types in the study: the single-peak (SP) type, having one sharp peak near 0°C, and the multiple-peaks (MP) type, having several small peaks. Here ‘peak’ indicates that precipitation frequently occurs at a certain temperature. Peaks of the MP type changed position with fluctuations in mean winter temperature, but the peak of the SP type moved only slightly despite annual fluctuations in winter mean temperature. One of the multiple peaks of the MP type appeared at ∼0°C and this peak also remained nearly stationary with fluctuations in winter mean temperature. The peak of the WPC appearing near 0°C in both the SP and MP types likely resulted from the development of the 0°C isothermal layer due to the cooling effect of melting snow particles.

A comparison is made of silt-particle size and shape, and of boulders, from supraglacial, englacial, and subglacial locations of Roslin Gletscher in east Greenland, Findelengletscher* in Switzerland, and fragments of laboratory ground sandstone. Particle roundness increases as size decreases in each zone of both glaciers. Roundness increases similarly for silt and for boulders from the supraglacial to the subglacial zone. Elongation expressed as width-to-length ratio has a mean value of 0.67 ± 0.17 which persists through a wide range of silt and boulder sizes. Crushing into smaller pieces, rather than the removal of asperities, is postulated as the dominant process of glacial erosion. Sediment loads are given for the glacial streams.

The drilling of a deep borehole in ice is an undertaking that spans several seasons. Over recent decades such drilling has become widespread in both polar regions. Owing to the remoteness of the drill sites, considerable cost is associated with the drilling of a deep borehole of several thousand meters. The replicate coring system allows re-drilling of ice core at select depths within an existing parent borehole. This effectively increases the yield of the existing borehole and permits re-sampling of ice in areas of high scientific value. The replicate coring system achieves this through the combination of actuators, motors, sensors and a computerized control system. The replicate coring drill is a further development of the deep ice-sheet coring (DISC) drill, extending the capabilities of the DISC drill to include replicate coring.

Subglacial intakes in a tunnel system underneath Engabreen, northern Norway, provide access to the underside of a 200 m thick glacier. Detailed observations and measurements were made in several ice tunnels melted out along the glacier bed. A 20–200 cm thick basal sediment layer is overlain by clean glacier ice. Stratigraphy is complex, with alternating sediment-rich and sediment-free layers, and pervasive shearing. Throughout the basal ice are numerous spheroidal water pockets, which increase in both size and degree of elongation with distance from the bed. Ice cores were retrieved from ice-tunnel walls for sediment, cation and isotope analysis. Our observations and measurements provide evidence for both accretion in and water movement through the basal ice. This supports the modification to classical regelation theory proposed recently by Lliboutry in which water flow in the vein network is required to achieve net accretion of regelation layers.

To investigate the effects of depositional and post-depositional processes on chemical records in the snowpack, seven monthly snow pits were sampled at the same site on the pass of Zhadang (ZD) glacier (30˚28.079' N, 90˚39.032' E; 5800ma.s.l.), Nyainqentanglha mountain, southern Tibetan Plateau, between April and October 2006. Meteorological data from an automatic weather station at the sampling site showed that the annual mean air temperature was –5.6˚C on the pass and that monthly air temperature was above 0˚C from June to August, indicating that snowmelt could occur in this high-elevation region during the summer. An analysis of δ18O and major-ion variability in snow pits suggests that glaciochemical recordswere influenced by both meltwater percolation in mid-summer (July and August) and seasonal deposition. Less negative δ18O values and high concentrations of major ions occurred during the spring. The trends of δ18O variations in the ZD snow pits were consistent with those in precipitation sampled at the nearby Nam Co station for all months except for July and August, suggesting that climate signals are well preserved in the snow-pit δ18O records during the non-summer months. However, these climate signals were destroyed by strong percolation of meltwater during mid-summer.

Data from radio-sounding measurements have been analysed to determine the ice thickness and the bottom morphology of Drygalski Ice Tongue, Antarctica. The morphology and the structure of the bottom surface has been studied through an electromagnetic interpretation. A function that includes the gain/loss due to the geometrical shape of the reflecting surfaces has been calculated. Such a function has been evaluated assuming some physical electromagnetic quantities (the temperature of the glacier, the complex dielectric permittivity of ice, sea ice and sea water). The ice-water interface shows both concave and convex faces toward the sounding system, producing a focusing or deocusing effect, detected as absolute (or relative) amplitude variation in the echo signal. It is shown that the calculated function follows quite well the observed bottom rippled surface of the glacier tongue estimated from the time-arrival measurements of the echo signal.

Bed-reflection power (BRP) from ice-penetrating radar has been used to make inferences about subglacial conditions and processes, yet is subject to confounding influences, including englacial attenuation and bed geometry. We use radar data collected in 2008–11 from a polythermal glacier to compute BRP with the aim of relating BRP to basal conditions. We examine the relationship between raw BRP and ice thickness, apparent bed slope and thickness of the englacial scattering layer as a proxy for internal reflection power. We then analyze a corrected form of the BRP with a graph-segmentation algorithm to delineate areas of high and low reflection power. Low corrected BRP values are found near the glacier terminus where the bed is most likely to be cold, while high corrected BRP is found in the region thought to be undergoing a slow surge. We find a spatial correlation between high BRP and high values of subglacial hydraulic upstream area, suggestive of a hydrological control on BRP. Whereas in dominantly cold glaciers BRP seems to distinguish cold from temperate regions of the bed, BRP in a polythermal glacier with a substantial volume of temperate ice may be a more complex product of thermal and hydrological conditions.

Using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Level 1 radiance Swath Data (MOD02QKM) with a spatial resolution of 250 m, we derive snowlines during July–September 2001–12 for several mountain ranges distributed across the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Radiance bands 1 and 2 are projected to the study area and processed automatically. The discrimination between snow and ice is done using a k-mean cluster analysis and the snowlines are delineated based on a fixed percentile of the snow-cover altitude. The highest transient snowline altitude is then taken as a proxy for the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA). In the absence of measured glaciological, meteorological or hydrological data, our ELA time series enable better understanding of atmosphere-cryosphere couplings on the TP. Interannual ELA variability is linked to local and remote climate indices using a correlation analysis. Southerly flow and higher temperatures are linked with a higher ELA in most regions. Eastern and Trans-Himalayan sites show positive correlations between winter temperatures and ELA. As winter temperatures are substantially below zero, this suggests an enhancement of winter sublimation as opposed to a reduction in accumulation. It appears that large-scale atmospheric forcing has varying and sometimes opposite influences on the annual ELA in different regions on the TP.

Basal motion of ice sheets depends in part on the roughness and material properties of the subglacial bed and the occurrence of water. To date, basal motion represents one of the largest uncertainties in ice-flow models. It is that component of the total flow velocity that can change most rapidly and can, therefore, facilitate rapid variations in dynamic behaviour. In this study, we investigate the subglacial properties of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet by statistically analysing the roughness of the bed topography, inferred from radio-echo sounding measurements. We analyse two sets of roughness parameters, one derived in the spatial and the other in the spectral domain, with two roughness parameters each. This enables us to compare the suitability of the four roughness parameters to classify the subglacial landscapes below the ice sheet. We further investigate the relationship of the roughness parameters with observed surface flow velocity and modelled basal temperatures of the ice sheet. We find that one of the roughness parameters, the Hurst exponent derived in the spatial domain, coincides with the thermal condition at the base of the ice sheet for slow flow velocities and varies with flow velocity.

In this study we correlate temporal features within the electrical conductivity (acidity) traces of four shallow firn cores obtained from the southern Antarctic Peninsula to synoptic-scale variations in the regional climate, as depicted by a numerical weather prediction model. It is demonstrated that the three high-acidity features present within the 1992-93 accumulation correspond to periods of significant precipitation, a hypothesis supported by the association of these events with strong onshore winds, ideal for transporting the biogenically derived sources of precipitation acidity to the core sites. The longitudinal location of depressions within the Bellingshausen Sea is shown to be the principal factor governing the volume of precipitation that they give over the western Peninsula. Annual accumulation in the model is ~25% lower than revealed by the cores; although there are too many uncertainties to provide a definite reason for the deviation, the smoothed model orography and inaccurate land-sea mask are believed to be significant factors. It is postulated that the acidity pattern within southern Peninsula cores may reveal an El Niño-Southern Oscillation signal.

Up to now, snow cover on Antarctic sea ice and its impact on radar backscatter, particularly after the onset of freeze/thaw processes, are not well understood. Here we present a combined analysis of in situ observations of snow properties from the landfast sea ice in Atka Bay, Antarctica, and high-resolution TerraSAR-X backscatter data, for the transition from austral spring (November 2012) to summer (January 2013). The physical changes in the seasonal snow cover during that time are reflected in the evolution of TerraSAR-X backscatter. We are able to explain 76-93% of the spatio-temporal variability of the TerraSAR-X backscatter signal with up to four snowpack parameters with a root-mean-squared error of 0.87-1.62 dB, using a simple multiple linear model. Over the complete study, and especially after the onset of early-melt processes and freeze/thaw cycles, the majority of variability in the backscatter is influenced by changes in snow/ice interface temperature, snow depth and top-layer grain size. This suggests it may be possible to retrieve snow physical properties over Antarctic sea ice from X-band SAR backscatter.

Three-dimensional (3-D) snow analysis techniques provide comprehensive and accurate snow microstructure data. Nevertheless, there remains a requirement for less elaborate methods for snow characterization, as numerical snow models such as SNOWPACK are presently based on two-dimensional (2-D) grain analysis. We present a detailed assessment of various methods and shape descriptors used for snow characterization from digitized images. Dendricity, the ratio of the square of grain perimeter to its area, allows distinction between new and old snow while sphericity distinguishes between faceted and rounded grains. The concept of sphericity is based on curvature, yet another powerful shape descriptor. However, curvatures obtained from images of disaggregated snow grains depend on both resolution and methods chosen. We compared the standard parabola method with a cubic smoothing spline approach for curvature measurement. Applying both methods to parametrically generated shapes, descriptor values were compared with their analytical counterparts. The spline method was found to be able to measure a wider range of curvatures accurately, but both methods suffered from a filtering effect. Although some descriptor errors were as high as 50%, a method for effectively outlining snow grains was found. As well as assessing the classification potential of 2-D analysis on full samples, new descriptors were also investigated.

Airborne scanning laser altimetry is a relatively new technique for remote sensing of ground elevation. A laser ranger is scanned across a swath beneath the aircraft, producing a two-dimensional distribution of elevations when combined with data on aircraft position and orientation. Smooth snow-covered glaciers are ideal surfaces for laser scanning since they are highly reflective. A new prototype laser system is described together with results from Hardangerjökulen, Norway. An analysis of the data shows that noise levels are very low at around 2 cm, and that repeatability between overlapping swaths is approximately ± 10 cm. This is consistent with an absolute accuracy of 15 cm or better from manufacturer’s and other measurements. Swath widths of over 1 km are attainable, at lowing complete coverage of small to medium-sized glaciers using parallel flight tracks. The high accuracy and dense, even coverage (about 20 000 points per km2) gives good-quality derived products such as DEMs and enables reliable measurement of glacier volume change. Scanning laser altimetry has many advantages over photogrammetry, which was previously the only remote-sensing method of measuring elevations over large areas but which performs poorly over snow-covered glaciers.

Ice shelves are important regions to observe because they are likely to be sensitive indicators of climatic change. The satellite-borne radar altimetry is highly suited to ice-shelf monitoring; experience with Seasat, which flew in 1978, has demonstrated that a height-measurement precision of the order of 1 m can be obtained over ice surfaces (Brooks and Others 1983).

We identify subtle changes in altimeter wave forms associated with crevassed zones and the grounding line. Normal retracking procedures are shown to be inadequate in detecting such changes, and so methods which provide sensitive indication of the presence of these features in the sampled areas are devised. By ranging to the first return in the echo, the grounding line is identified, and by differencing this measurement with the half-peak power range, a measure of surface roughness is obtained which can be used to detect crevassed zones.

Detection of crevassed shear zones allows delimitation of distinct zones of flow in the ice shelf which can be monitored by future altimeter missions. Monitoring of the grounding-line position can provide sensitive indication of mass-balance conditions over the grounded part of the drainage basin.

The Climate System Model (CSM) developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) consists of atmosphere, land and ocean models, as well as a dynamic-thermodynamic sea-ice model. The results of sea-ice simulation using the first coupled climate simulation with the CSM is presented. It was found that the simulated total-ice areas in both hemispheres compared well with observations for winter, but were too large for summer. The numerical solution of the cavitating fluid dynamics was found to allow excessive ridging of ice, and an ad hoc correction was implemented. The ice velocities were realistic for the Antarctic, but for the Arctic were turned toward Alaska and Siberia by modeled winds and currents. This ice-drift pattern was reflected by ice thickness, which lacks the observed ridging near Greenland. The results illustrate the sensitivity of sea ice to the simulation of polar climate and the challenge of modeling the entire climate system.
