The coherent variations of annual snow accumulation rate and dust deposition over 60 years are recorded in an ice core drilled at 6530 ma.s.l. on the Chongce ice cap, located in the west Kunlun Shan, south of the Taklimakan desert in China. These records were investigated in the context both of the dust transport pathways from the source region and of climatic changes in this arid environment. The factors relating the dust transport from the source to sink area were taken into account to ascertain the integration of these factors on the precipitation-forming process at high elevations. Results indicate that: (1) dust is predominant among aerosols in precipitation at high altitude; (2) the dust aerosol population may be more instrumental than the vapor supply in the formation of precipitation at such altitudes; (3) compared to low-elevation glaciers, snow accumulation on high mountain glaciers seems to be more sensitive to changes in the concentration of air-burden dust particulates, which are closely related to the climatic variations around the desert region; and (4) under the current climate conditions surrounding the desert region, the decreasing trend in snow accumulation, in concert with the decrease in dust deposition that has occurred over the past several decades, might continue. This effect on snow accumulation at high altitudes may explain one of the elements potentially responsible for the longer-term glacial variation, i.e. the glacial retreat that has lasted for decades in central Asia.

In this paper, we present the summer-time energy balance for a site in the lower ablation zone of the West Greenland ice sheet. The summer climate of this part of Greenland is sunny and dry. The energy that is available for melting (on average 174 W m−2 or 4.5 cm w.e.d−1) is mainly provided by net global radiation two-thirds and sensible-heat flux (one-third). The contribution of the sub-surface heat flux, the latent-heat flux and the net longwave radiation to the energy balance are small. We tested some parameterizations to calculate energy-balance components that are currently used in general circulation models, energy-balance models and mesoscale meteorological models. For the area and time period under consideration, parameterizations that use screen-level temperature for the calculation of incoming longwave radiation systematically underestimate this quantity by 10 W m−2 owing to the proximity of the melting-ice surface that restricts temperature increase of the lowest air layers. The incoming global radiation was predicted correctly. Simple explicit schemes that calculate the stability corrections for turbulent fluxes as a function of the bulk Richardson number tend to underestimate the turbulent fluxes by 15 W m−2. The aerodynamic roughness length z0 derived from wind-speed profiles appears to be erroneously small, leading to underestimation of the fluxes by 30 W m−2. Probably, the wind profile is distorted by the rough terrain. An estimate of z0 biased on microtopographical survey yielded a more realistic result. Because all errors work in the same direction, the use of some of the parameterizations can cause serious underestimation of the melting energy.

Sea-ice and surface-water samples collected in January-April 1999 in coastal areas in the northern Baltic Sea were analyzed for particle, nutrient and trace-element concentrations and salinity. Stratigraphic analyses of ice cores were also carried out. Bulk nutrient and trace-element concentrations in sea ice fluctuated widely. Nutrient concentrations in sea ice normalized to sea-water salinities showed that sea ice had, almost without exception, an excess of nutrients compared to underlying waters. For phosphorus and phosphate this can be explained by particle incorporation and snow-ice formation, whereas for nitrogen and the sum of nitrite and nitrate snow-ice formation and other mechanisms are important. The levels of Al, Cu, Fe and Ni in the ice were similar to those observed in underlying waters. Pb was observed in detectable concentrations in the ice only. This indicates that sea ice contributes lead to underlying waters during melting, and in some degree also affects the other elements. Furthermore, the observations indicate that incorporation of lead into the ice cover is governed by different processes than for the other elements studied.

Nearest-neighbour models for avalanche forecasting have made little use of snowpack properties; however, slab thickness (H), slab load (Load) and a skier stability index (Sk38) have proven useful for regional avalanche forecasting in the Columbia Mountains, western Canada. This study explores 21 meteorological, snowpack and elaborated variables including Sk38, H and Load. A daily skier instability index (DSI) is developed as a response variable using skier-triggered avalanche activity on persistent weak layers and stability ratings at the end of the day. In rank correlation analysis, Sk38, Load, previous avalanche activity, H and some meteorological variables were highly ranked. The physical explanations are discussed. In classification-tree analysis, Sk38 was ranked as the most important variable and used in the development of the tree structure along with Load. Besides Sk38 and Load, snowpack thickness, the number of previously triggered avalanches and H have potential to predict DSI. Further we included once all 21 variables, and once all variables except Sk38, H and Load in nearest-neighbour models. Comparing the performance of these models shows that Sk38 along with Load and H have high potential to forecast the DSI on a regional scale.

The ice cover on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau plays an important role in the environmental and ecological systems. We analyze the in situ measurements of ice growth and examine the thermal diffusivity of thermokarst lake ice in the Beiluhe basin. We evaluate numerically the change of thermal diffusivity of thermokarst lake ice with changing ice temperature using an optimal control model. In a higher ice temperature regime (–3 to 0°C), the thermal diffusivity of thermokarst lake ice decreases exponentially with increasing ice temperature, and approaches the thermal diffusivity value of fresh water near the freezing-point temperature. In a lower ice temperature regime (–15 to –3°C), the thermal diffusivity increases slowly with decreasing ice temperature.

Surface velocity and deformation, radar sounding, and aerial photography data are used to describe the flow of Ross Ice Shelf around Crary Ice Rise. A continuous band of crevasses around the ice rise now allows the complete boundary to be mapped for the first time. The dynamics of three distinctly different areas of ice flow are studied. Just up-stream of the ice rise, there is a region of ice rumples dominated by intense longitudinal compression (0.01 a−1) and lateral tension. On the south-west side of the ice rise, intense shear (0.03 a−1) dominates, with the boundary layer of affected ice-shelf motion extending over 20 km from the ice-rise edge into the ice shelf. North-west of the ice rise, a crevasse-free block of ice, 40 km × 7 km, appears to have separated from the main ice rise and is now moving with the ice shelf. We refer to such moving blocks of ice as rafts. The separation of this raft is calculated to have occurred 20 ± 10 years ago. Other possible rafts are identified, including one on the south-west side of the ice rise which appears to be in the process of separating. Mechanisms for the formation of rafts are discussed.

Ice sounding with radar is a well-established technique for the retrieval of ice depth, and provides information on ice structures and layering. Airborne radar ice sounders suffer from off-nadir surface clutter that masks the signal from bedrock and ice layers with unwanted but simultaneously received surface reflections. This is of importance for future satellite ice-sounding missions, as the spaceborne geometry leads to strong surface clutter even for deep subsurface returns. This paper presents analysis and comparison of different clutter-suppression techniques applied to data acquired with the European Space Agency's P-band POLarimetric Airborne Radar Ice Sounder (POLARIS). The 4 m long antenna of POLARIS enables simultaneous reception of up to four across-track channels. It was operated in 2011 over Antarctica at a high flight altitude of 3200 m. Different coherent weighting techniques of the receive channels were used to suppress the surface ‘clutter’. However, with a channel spacing of 1.4 times the wavelength, the grating lobe imposes a limitation to the off-nadir angular range in which clutter can be effectively attenuated. Results of ice sounding over Jutulstraumen glacier are described, where we demonstrate a clutter suppression of up to 10 dB.

Two ice cores drilled to the bottom were recovered from Miaoergou flat-topped glacier (43°03'19“N, 94°19'21“E; 4512 ma.s.l.), eastern Tien Shan, central Asia, in 2005. A high–resolution record of cadmium was established by applying inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to one of the ice cores (57.6 m), covering a 228 year period from AD 1776 to 2004. The results showed long-term variations of atmospheric transport and deposition of cadmium at high altitudes. Trend analysis based on the sequential Mann-Kendall test and the analysis of crustal enrichment factors of the cadmium shows that natural contribution, mainly from rock and mineral dust, dominated the atmospheric cycles of cadmium during the period AD 1776–1957, which was confirmed by the significant correlation between the winter North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index and annual cadmium concentration. The concentration of cadmium increased sharply from AD 1957 to 2004, suggesting increasing influence from human activities, such as metals production. The ice–core record indicated increasing atmospheric cadmium pollution in response to rapid economic growth after AD 1957 in the region.

Firn-temperature profiles are calculated in a thermal model using continuous surface temperatures derived from automatic weather station data and passive-microwave data in the Greenland summit region during the period 1987–99. the results show that significant interannual variations of mean summer (June–August) and annual temperatures occur in the top 15 m, in addition to the normal seasonal cycle of firn temperature. At 5 m depth, the seasonal cycle is damped to 13% of the surface seasonal range, but even at 15m about 1% or 0.6˚C of the seasonal cycle persists. Both summer and mean annual temperatures decrease from 1987 to 1992, followed by a general increasing trend. Interannual variability is 5˚C at the surface, but is dampened to 3.2˚C at 5 m depth and 0.7˚C at 15 m depth. Dampening of the interannual variability with depth is slower than dampening of the seasonal cycle, because of the longer time constant of the interannual variation. the warmer spring and summer temperatures experienced in the top 5 m, due to both the seasonal cycle and interannual variations, affect the rate of firn densification, which is non-linearly dependent on temperature. During the 12 year period 1987–99, the annual mean surface temperature is –29.2˚C, and the annual mean 15 m temperature is –30.1˚C, which is >1˚C warmer than a 15 mborehole temperature representing the period around 1959 and warmer than the best-fit temperature history by Alley and Koci (1990) back to AD 1500.

The first known jökulhlaup from the Blåmannsisen ice cap in northern Norway began on 6 September 2001. It lasted 35 hours and emptied the lake Øvre Messingmalmvatn (∼4.0 × 107m3). Before the event, the lake drained steadily via a rock spillway into Sweden. The water from the jökulhlaup drained into the hydropower reservoir Sisovatn, and so was financially beneficial to Norway. Glaciological data show evidence of glacier retreat and thinning during the last four decades. Glacier thickness decreased in the ablation zone, reducing ice-barrier stability. The lake drained at a water level 40 m below that required to equalize the ice overburden pressure. Measurements show an ice-barrier thinning of 3.5 m since the jökulhlaup occurred. Climate scenarios indicate future negative mass balance and further thinning. The lake volume was 82% full 2.5 years after the event, suggesting a probable repeat interval of 3 years. Future jökulhlaups may be triggered at lower water levels and produce lower discharges.

Although World Glacier Inventory (WGI) data for 241 local glaciers (>1 km2 in area) in Svalbard show a mean aspect of 014˚ ± 24˚, their mid-altitudes are lowest for an aspect of 109˚ ± 46˚, which is inconsistent. Further data are generated here for the altitude, length and source aspect of 205 local glaciers (0.3–6.0 km long) in the main area of local glaciation in Svalbard, Nordenskiöld Land. All four mountain blocks have mean glacier source aspects of 356˚ to 018˚; the overall mean is 011˚ ± 8˚. Mid-altitudes are lowest at 042˚ ±21˚, predicted to be 53 m lower than on opposite aspects. Lowest altitudes are predicted at 009˚ to 030˚, averaging 157 m lower than on opposite aspects. These results show that local, land-terminating glaciers around 78˚ N are affected more by north-south radiation receipt contrasts than by wind effects, consistent with the trend found across most other Arctic regions. It is concluded that, although weaker than in mid-latitudes, contrasts due to slope climates are substantial even in Arctic glaciers. This is apparent only when small, steep glaciers are inventoried: WGI data are incomplete and users need to check the thresholds of coverage.

Glacier variations in Iceland have been recorded systematically since the 1930s at 27 different glacier termini. The advance/retreat records of non-surging glaciers show a clear relationship to climate. A change in the climate typically leads to a response at the snout within a time period of 10 years. The records of surge-type and mixed-type glaciers show variations that are unrelated to climate. However, the maximum extension of surge-type glaciers at the end of surges and the minimum extension just before a surge appear to be influenced by long-term climate changes. A strong warming in the 1920s was a turning-point in the climate of Iceland which led to a rapid retreat of most glaciers in the country in the 1930s. The summer temperature fell gradually after 1940, with a notable drop in the mid-1960s. Since about 1970, more than half of the glaciers in Iceland have been advancing. In the western part of the country, the recovery is about one-quarter of the ground lost and in the southern, central and northern parts it is about one-half. In southeastern Iceland, some of the glaciers have been stationary for about 30 years while others have advanced slightly. Glacier snow-budget index computed from meteorological data indicates that the timing of the turning-point around 1970 coincides with a minimum in the cumulative net glacier mass balance.

A detailed study of organic carbon content obtained from two sediment cores collected in the Joides basin, western Ross Sea, Antarctica, was carried out. The variations observed during the last deglaciation and the Holocene were compared to the high-resolution climatic records (EPICA DC and Taylor Dome) preserved in the ice. The importance of the carbon content as a proxy for palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental changes was investigated. A dramatic decrease in the Ross Sea palaeoproductivity was observed during the Antarctic Cold Reversal (12.5–14 kyr BP). Another decrease in total organic carbon in the second half of the Holocene (after 5–6 kyr BP) confirms the climate worsening observed in previous studies.

During the past 220 years, prominent signals of non-sea salt sulfate ion (nssSO42–) concentration exceeding the background level, including both marine biogenic and anthropogenic SO42–, were found in shallow ice cores from site H15 in East Antarctica and Site-J in southern Greenland. They were mostly correlated with past explosive volcanic eruptions. on the basis of this result and published results of shallow ice cores and snow pits at various locations on the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, eight common signals were found, of which six were assigned to the following explosive eruptions: El Chichόn, Mexico, in 1982; Agung, Indonesia, in 1963; Santa Maria, Guatemala, in 1902; Krakatau, Indonesia, in 1883; Cosiguina, Nicaragua, in 1835; an unknown volcano between 1831 and 1834; Tambora, Indonesia, in 1815; and an unknown volcano in 1809. Volcanic eruptions which have a potential to imprint their signals in both the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets were characterized by (1) location in low latitudes between 20˚N and 10˚ S, and (2) eruption column height ≥25 km, corresponding to a volcanic explosivity index (VEI) ≥5.

Precise topography from European Remote-sensing Satellite radar altimetry and high density of airborne radio-echo sounding in the area surrounding Dome C, Antarctica, show a link between surface features and subglacial lakes. In this paper, we extend the study to fine structures by computing a curvature-based coefficient (cy) related to surface undulations. These coefficient variations reveal many surface undulations, and some elongated features of this parameter seem to link known subglacial lakes. A population of high values of this coefficient, assumed to correspond to transitions between sliding and non-sliding flow regime, strengthen the appearance of a network which would link most of the lakes in the area. The existence of such a network impacts on ice-flow dynamics and on subglacial-lake studies.

In this paper, two-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNS) of dense clouds moving down steep slopes are presented for the first time. The results obtained are in good agreement with the overall characteristics, i.e. the spatial growth rate and velocity variations, of clouds studied in the laboratory. In addition to the overall flow structure, DNS provide local density and velocity variations inside the cloud, not easily accessible in experiments. The validity of two-dimensional simulations as a first approach is confirmed by the dynamics of the flow and by comparison with experimental results. The interest of the results for powder-snow avalanches is discussed; it is concluded that two-dimensionality is acceptable and that large density differences need to be taken into account in future simulations.

The snowfall series of Turin, northwest Italy, is one of the longest available for Europe, with daily observations starting in 1784 and continuous since 1788. The unpublished 207 years data set was carefully obtained from original manuscripts and filed on magnetic media. Mean yearly snowfall amount is 48.9 cm showing a high interannual variability (variation coefficient 79%), with about seven snow days from October through April; the maximum amount was measured in winter 1784–85 (233 cm), followed by 1808–9 with 163 cm. Maximum daily amount was on 4 December 1844 with 64 cm. During the whole period a negative trend is exhibited, increasing in the years following 1890. This pattern is confirmed by the Mann-Kendall test. The change derives from regional climate rather than expansion of the urban area. Return periods of yearly maximum snow loads are calculated in order to contribute to the definition of new values for structural design. A case study of heavy snowfall in January 1987 is examined.

Dielectric measurements of snow were carried out in the temperature range –15° to 0°C and in the frequency range 50 Hz to 5 MHz. The snow samples (about 400 kg m–3 density) used were stored snow (average particle size: 2 mm) and hoar-frost (particle size: <1 to 5 mm). The frequency characteristics of dielectric parameters showed a dielectric dispersion (Davidson-Cole type) around 30 kHz and a low-frequency dielectric dispersion (Cole-Cole circular law type). The a.c. conductivity showed a dielectric dispersion around 30 kHz and two characteristic constant values in the frequency ranges above 1 MHz and below 100 Hz (the high-frequency conductivity σ∞ and the low-frequency conductivity σLOW). The low-frequency conductivity σLOW showed a peak at about –2°C. This behavior has never been noted by previous researchers. The σLOW showed an activation energy of about 1 eV below –5°C. This means that the σLOW is mainly caused by a surface conduction. The activation energy increased with increasing temperature above –5°C. This means that the σLOW in this temperature range is affected by the quasi-liquid layer on ice surfaces. The σLOW above –2°C decreased with increasing temperature. The apparently curious behavior near the melting temperature is attributed to the numerous free ice surfaces within the porous snow. This conclusion was reached because our measurements without the free ice surfaces showed no such conductivity peaks for solid polycrystalline ice samples and for snow samples soaked with kerosene in the cooling process.

The rate of ice-sheet thickness change is calculated for 10 sites in Greenland by comparing measured values of ice vertical velocity and snow-accumulation rate. Vertical velocities are derived from repeat surveys of markers using precision global positioning system techniques, and accumulation rates are determined from stratigraphic analysis of firn cores. the results apply to time-scales covered by the firn-core records, which in most cases are a few decades. A spectrum of thickness-change rates is obtained, ranging from substantial thinning to slow thickening. the sites where ice-sheet thinning is indicated are located near the ice-sheet margin or in outlet glacier catchments. Interior and high-elevation sites are predominantly in balance or thickening slowly. Uncertainties in the rates of thickness change are dominated by errors in the determination of accumulation rates. the results of this work are broadly comparable with regional estimates of mass balance obtained from the analysis of catchment input vs discharge.

A mathematical model of snow-cover influence on soil freezing, taking into account the phase transition layer, water migration in soil, frost heave and ice-layer formation, has been developed. The modeled results are in good agreement with data observed in natural conditions. The influence of a possible delay between the time of negative temperature establishment in the air and the beginning of snow accumulation, and possible variations of the thermophysical properties of snow cover in the wide range previously reported were investigated by numerical experiments. It was found that the delay could change the frozen-soil depth up to 2–3 times, while different thermophysical characteristics of snow changed the resulting freezing depth 4–5 times.
