The RADARSAT geophysical processor system (RGPS) uses sequential synthetic aperture radar images of Arctic sea ice taken every 3 days to track a large set of Lagrangian points over the winter and spring seasons. The points are the vertices of cells, which are initially square and 10 km on a side, and the changes in the area of these cells due to opening and closing of the ice are used to estimate the fractional area of a set of first-year ice categories. The thickness of each category is estimated by the RGPS from an empirical relationship between ice thickness and the freezing degree-days since the formation of the ice. With a parameterization of the albedo based on the ice thickness, the albedo may be estimated from the first-year ice distribution. We compute the albedo for the first spring processed by the RGPS, the early spring of 1997. The data include most of the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. We find that the mean albedo is 0.79 with a standard deviation of 0.04, with lower albedo values near the edge of the perennial ice zone. The biggest source of error is likely the assumed rate of snow accumulation on new ice.

Information on the occurrence, spatial distribution and morphometric characteristics of Antarctic icebergs is needed in a large number of applications including navigation, heat and freshwater balance calculations, biochemistry of the ocean and climatology. Using over 60 000 ship observations of icebergs in the Southern Ocean collected since the end of the 1940s we have produced a detailed map of the distribution of Antarctic icebergs as well as maps of related statistics including the standard deviation, minimum and maximum values of the iceberg concentration and the probability of iceberg-free observations. The study incorporated small and medium-sized icebergs with a length of <10 nautical miles. Most observations were taken during the warm period of the year, from December to April. It is shown that the iceberg distribution across the Southern Ocean is determined by the location of calving regions and peculiarities of the atmospheric circulation and ocean currents. Iceberg concentration data combined with information on the iceberg size and shape distribution have been used to evaluate the area-integrated characteristics of Antarctic icebergs. The instantaneous number of icebergs in the Southern Ocean was estimated as 132 269 with an uncertainty of 7%. The area and volume of icebergs were equal correspondingly to 55 805 km2 and 16 893 km3 with uncertainties of 32–33%.

Assessment of the effect of the Antarctic ice sheet on sea level requires an accurate determination of its current state of balance. This is usually done by comparing the ice net accumulation for an area with the net outward flow of the ice. To obtain the net outward flux to better than 20% accuracy the relationship between the column-integrated ice flux and measurements of ice-sheet thickness and surface velocity must be considered. That relationship is summarised by the ratio of depth-averaged velocity ϒ to surface velocity γs in areas where ice sliding can be neglected, this ratio strongly reflects the rheological properties of the ice and depends on the shear strain-rate profile through the ice column, which is influenced by profiles of stress, temperature and ice-crystal fabric.

We present calculations from a flowline model of a hypothetical large ice sheet to demonstrate how development of an anisotropic ice-crystal fabric can influence the depth profile of horizontal velocity. The temperature dependence of ice rheology, combined with typical ice-sheet temperature profiles, yields a more block-like velocity profile with increasing to values in the range 0.89-0.96 from the isothermal rheology value of 0.8. Our results show that the onset of enhanced shear flow with increasing shear strain, as a consequence of anisotropy, and then a reduction of enhancement nearer the bedrock, can modify the velocity profile, giving values typically in the range 0.86-0.91. Smaller values than these may also occur for rougher bedrock or thinner ice.

Areal snow-cover data provided by remote sensing enable the areal water equivalent at the start of the snow melt season to be evaluated. To this end, the time scale in the graphical representation of the snow coverage curves is replaced by the totalized computed daily melt depths. These refer to the seasonal snow cover at the starting date and disregard subsequent snowfalls.

Potential energy released from the capsize of ice-shelf fragments (icebergs) is the immediate driver of the brief explosive phase of ice-shelf disintegration along the Antarctic Peninsula (e.g. the Larsen A, Larsen B and Wilkins ice shelves). The majority of this energy powers the rapidly expanding plume of ice-shelf fragments that expands outward into the open ocean; a smaller fraction of this energy goes into surface gravity waves and other dynamic interactions between ice and water that can sustain the continued fragmentation and break-up of the original ice shelf. As an initial approach to the investigation of ice-shelf fragment capsize in ice-shelf collapse, we develop a simple conceptual model involving ideal rectangular icebergs, initially in unstable or metastable orientations, which are assembled into a tightly packed mass that subsequently disassembles via massed capsize. Computations based on this conceptual model display phenomenological similarity to aspects of real ice-shelf collapse. A promising result of the conceptual model presented here is a description of how iceberg aspect ratio and its statistical variance, the two parameters related to ice-shelf fracture patterns, influence the enabling conditions to be satisfied by slow-acting processes (e.g. environmentally driven melting) that facilitate ice-shelf disintegration.

A one-dimensional model has been developed to simulate the evolution of snow-cover characteristics using meteorological data. This model takes into account the heat balance at the snow surface and heat conduction in the snow cover as well as liquid water flow and densification. The basic variables of the model are snow temperature, liquid water content, snow density and the solid impurities density. With these four variables, the model can calculate albedo, thermal conductivity, liquid water flux, snow depth, water equivalent and the amount of runoff.

Diurnal variation of profiles of snow temperature, water content and snow density, and meteorological elements were observed at Mount Zao Bodaira, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Simulated diurnal variation patterns of each component by the model were in good agreement with the observations. Moreover, the snow-cover characteristics were simulated for three 90-day periods with meteorological data and snow pit observations at Sapporo. It was found that the model was able to simulate long-period variations of albedo, snow depth, snow water equivalent and the snow density profile.

A simple model, which is zonally averaged, for the transport of atmospheric water vapour is presented which uses as input the zonally averaged evaporation field and the mean meridional travel distance of tropospheric water vapour as functions of latitude. The model demonstrates that for polar regions each of the 10° latitude strips poleward of 25° is of equal importance as a moisture source. The model is used to predict zonal averages of δ(18O) for the present day and 18 ka BP. Both annual average values and seasonal amplitudes are presented and compared to observations. Sea-ice cover is an important factor in determining both annual averages and seasonal amplitudes today and at 18 ka BP. An earlier model (Jouzel and others 1983) linking δ(18O), the deuterium excess, and sea-salt content in an Antarctic ice core to the relative humidity of the source region is based on a single-source atmospheric water-vapour cycle type model and is re-evaluated using the present model.

Landsat multispectral images of the Antarctic ice sheet have been digitally enhanced by the US Geological Survey to show ice surface features not seen in earlier photographic products of the same scenes. Now for the first time it is worthwhile to prepare image maps at scales of up to 1:250 000 of ice sheet areas even where no nunataks are visible. Derivatives of the data can be stretched to bring out glaciologically significant features in smooth areas that traditionally have been described as featureless. Over large tracts of the ice sheet, the direction of ice flow can be revealed as clearly as it is by the medial moraines of an Alpine glacier system. Ice streams, ice divides, ice rises, ice rumples, grounding lines, crevasses, and rifts are seen where none had been identified before. In the same way that Seasat altimetry of the surface of the ocean has much to tell about the bed of the ocean, Landsat has much to tel! about the bed of the ice. Not only major structural features but also many details of the sub-glacial landscape are unmasked by their subtle reflection on the ice sheet surface. Ground control on ice sheets can be obtained by Doppler satellite observations tied to image-identifiable surface features. Because of ice movement, the standard of geodetic control can never approach that of conventional surveys based on rock stations. But the precise standards of conventional surveys are unnecessary for ice sheet maps.

Winter precipitation in the form of snow is the major factor determining accumulation on Arctic glaciers. In this paper, I present a simple method to assess snow accumulation on the glaciers of Svalbard. I deduce snow accumulation from the sum of winter precipitation and the fraction of precipitation of different types at a reference weather station. The accumulation is then converted to a relevant point on the glacier, using an accumulation gradient and a location coefficient. I apply this algorithm of accumulation assessment to eight glaciers of southern and central Spitsbergen using data from 23 seasons. On the basis of measured accumulation data, the mean error of the calculated accumulation, with no distinction of precipitation types, amounted to 23%. When the distinction between precipitation types is used for glaciers of southern Spitsbergen, the average error of estimation was 19%. Errors result from factors influencing accumulation distribution over the glacier elevation profile (e.g. glacier topography, orography of its surroundings, precipitation inversion). Application of this accumulation algorithm may provide a crucial method of estimating mass balance for glaciers not included in permanent monitoring.

Salt segregation and isotopic fractionation during sea-ice formation can be parameterized as a function of the ice growth rate. We performed a study to investigate if the salt segregation models derived for saline sea-ice studies are pertinent during the growth of Baltic Sea ice in brackish water. We used a time series of ice-salinity profiles and modeled growth rates to examine the relationship between effective salt segregation and growth rate. The results show that models derived for saline sea water are not directly applicable for use in the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. We derived a simple model for the effective salt segregation in relation to ice growth rate, for a wide range of growth rates, pertinent for use in low-salinity Baltic Sea conditions and in the future development of a Baltic Sea ice salinity model.

Baldwin Peninsula, northwest Alaska, is a middle Pleistocene push-moraine complex composed of marine, fluvial, and glaciogenic sediments. The peninsula was formed by three ice lobes emanating from the De Long and Baird mountains and the Selawik Lowlands in the southwest Brooks Range during the Anaktuvuk River glaciation. This glaciation was nearly an order of magnitude more areally extensive than late Pleistocene glaciations in the same region and occurred c. 500 to 600 ka B.P. based on paleomagnetism, and amino-stratigraphic and morphostratigraphic correlations with other numerically-dated northwest Alaskan deposits.

Extensive deposits of massive and laminated clayey silt with striated, faceted stones indicate that local sea level was high as glacial ice reached its maximum extent. Glacio-isostasy does not seem to have been important in maintaining a high relative sea level; therefore we infer that eustatic sea level remained high during ice advance. For this to occur, high latitude glaciation must have preceded the build-up of ice in lower latitudes. The source of moisture for such massive glaciation may have come from submerged Bering and Chukchi shelves, enhanced flow of North Pacific/southern Bering Sea winter storms, reduced intensity of the winter Arctic High, or a combination thereof.

Horizontal velocity measurements on the lower part of Engabreen, Norway, were made from repeat aerial photography. IMCORR software, which has been widely used to measure velocities from satellite images, was used to make the measurements. This is the first known successful use of IMCORR on aerial photographs. Supplementary horizontal velocity measurements were made from repeat measurements of stakes, giving velocities over different periods and also in areas that are too slow-moving to register a measurable velocity after only a few days.

This paper describes a deterministic, distributed snow-melt model which has been developed for the Systeme Hydrologique Européen (SHE), The model is based on partial differential equations describing the flow of mass and energy through the snow. These equations are solved by an implicit, iterative finite-difference method. The behaviour of the model is investigated using data from a sub-Arctic site in Scotland.

The Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD) variable-grid atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) was used in this study for a five-year high-resolution simulation of the Antarctic climate. The horizontal resolution is about 100 km over a large part of the ice sheet. This study focuses on the simulated surface mass balance (precipitation-evaporation sublimation-melt) and on the spatial and temporal variability of snowfall in Antarctica. The simulated annual mean surface mass balance for the whole continent is close to the observed value, and the model simulates well the spatial distribution of the surface mass balance. The annual cycle of snowfall exhibits a clear minimum in summer over the high interior plateau as well as for Antarctica as a whole, in agreement with the observations. In the interior of the continent, the model produces a permanent light background snowfall that accounts for about 5% of the total annual precipitation. The bulk of the snowfall is produced irregularly during periods that generally last only two or three days that are caused by cyclones off the coast.

The velocity field of the confluence area of two large ice stream tributaries forming Ice Stream D in West Antarctica is studied using sequential Landsat images. Sequential satellite image analysis allows for a very high density of velocity measurements, based on computer-measured displacements of features such as crevasses, crevasse scars, and ice mounds recognizable in both images. Automated displacement measurement of these features results in a detailed map of surface velocities from which surface-horizontal strain-rate fields can be calculated. Correlations between the surface morphology, the velocity field, and the strain-rate field of Ice Stream D reveal a number of important characteristics of ice stream flow:

• the characteristic flowband appearance of streaming ice is present at velocities from below 100 m a−1 to above 350 m a−1;

• in the upstream areas, there appears to be no sharp transition between “sheet” flow, typical of the surrounding ice sheet, and “streaming” flow;

• the fastest moving portions of the ice stream are nearly devoid of surface topography undulations;

• the confluence area is characterized by acceleration of the ice in the slower tributary as it impinges on faster-moving ice, and by highly convergent flow. Velocity in the faster-moving tributary changes little, and there is no persistent evidence of the shear margins of the joined tributaries downstream of the confluence.

This study demonstrates that sequential satellite image analysis, coupled with computer-determined displacement measurements, can provide accurate velocity and strain-rate information on a regional scale rapidly and cost-effectively. Such data sets are required for modelling ice sheet evolution, and for monitoring any changes in ice flow within the ice streams.

There are some reports on the measurement of the charge-to-mass ratio of blowing-snow particles, but there are few studies concerned with individual snow-particle charge. We measured the charge-to-mass ratios using snow particles selected according to size, and discussed individual charges. Experiments were conducted in a cryogenic wind tunnel. Charge-to-mass ratios measured in our experiment were all negative and their absolute values tended to increase with a decrease in particle diameter. Individual snow-particle charges were calculated from the average of particle diameter distributions. The charges were all approximated by the power function of diameter at each temperature. Assuming that the coefficient of these approximations is a function of air temperature, we could easily predict the individual snow-particle charge.

Three satellite images of the northern Larsen Ice Shelf arc used to derive velocity fields for the periods 1975–86 and 1986 89. Substantial increases in the speed of the ice between these periods are detected to a high degree of confidence. Ice which entered the ice shelf between Fothergill Point and Cape Worsley and ice from Drygalski Glacier has accelerated by approximately 15% over the measurement period. Ice from Bombardier and Dinsmoor Glaciers also exhibits acceleration but by a lesser amount. These accelerations may be the result of either significant retreat experienced by the ice shelf during this period or warming in the Antarctic Peninsula region. Velocities measured by surface survey over a 15 d period in 1991 indicate a slower velocity than the image-derived velocities in the limited region of overlap. These differences appear to be systematic and may be the result of uncontrolled errors in the surface survey. Limited control of one image could also contribute to some of these differences.

Passive protection structures reduce avalanche run-out distance and hence the potential damages brought about by an avalanche, by reducing its velocity and mass. This paper starts with a summary of the main existing results on interactions between snow avalanches and dams. In the case of dense avalanches, the effects of dams are re-examined and previous results are theoretically justified. For a powder-snow avalanche a dam has two primary effects. The momentum is reduced by the retarding force upstream of the dam and when the jet collides with the ground after the dam. Entrainment of air during the jet reduces its velocity since the mass increases. For a dense avalanche, there is a retarding force upstream of the dam and when the jet collides with the ground, but there is no significant effect of air entrainment. There is, however, deposition of snow which reduces the momentum of the avalanche without affecting the velocity. The reduction of the volume due to deposition reduces the spreading length and therefore the run-out distance of the avalanche. Downstream of the obstacle, the avalanche flow is regarded as an airborne jet. A comparative study shows that density and ambient-fluid entrainment effects are significant for gravity currents, powder and dense snow avalanches whereas they are negligible in granular flows.

Glaciar Upsala, a freshwater calving glacier in southern Patagonia, has been retreating since 1978, and after a drastic recession of about 700 m a−1 in 1994 the retreat seems to have stopped in 1995. A large ice-thinning rate of 11 m a−1 was obtained between 1990 and 1993, by surveying surface elevations near the terminus of Glaciar Upsala. In 1993–94, the thinning was estimated at about 20 m a−1 near the lateral margin. Some possible causes of the thinning behavior are considered.

In the ablation area of Glaciar Perito Moreno, 50 km south of Glaciar Upsala, ablation rates were measured during 110 d in summer 1993–94, and air temperature was continuously recorded throughout 1994. Using a degree-day method with temperature data at the nearest meteorological station, Calafate, annual ablation during the last 30 years was estimated to fluctuate from about 12 ± 2 to 16 ± 2 m a−1 in ice thickness, with a mean of 14 ± 2 m a−1. Thus, the temperature anomaly alone cannot elucidate the thinning of 11 m a−1 at Glaciar Upsala. As a possible mechanism of the ice-thinning, it is suggested that the considerable retreat due to calving may have resulted in reduction of longitudinal compressive stress exerted from bedrock rises and islands near the glacier front, causing a considerable decrease in the emergence flow. Thus, the ice may have thinned at a rate close to the annual ablation rate.

Accelerating loss of glacial mass caused by rising global temperatures has significant implications. The global cycle of the greenhouse gas CO2 is also associated with mineral weathering and glaciation. In glaciated areas, most estimates of atmospheric CO2 consumption are confined to chemical ionic mass balance or analog modeling methods. We applied the gradient method to the surface of Koxkar glacier, western Tien Shan, China, for a 5 month period during 2012. The overall net glacier-system CO2 exchange (NGE) rate was measured as -0.05 and -0.07mmol m–2 s–1 for regions of exposed ice and supraglacial moraine, respectively. This suggests that atmospheric CO2 drawdown may occur during ice melting because of consumption of H+ by CO2 hydrolysis that occurs in solutions. Using the degree-day model to calculate glacier ablation in bare-ice regions and considering characteristics of the NGE rate in the supraglacial debris region with the support of GIS, the daily NGE rate was estimated to be -1.23 ± 0.17μmmol m–2 d–1 between Julian days 125 and 268 of 2012. These findings present a new approach for modeling the dynamics of glacial CO2 sinks undergoing melting, and develop an understanding of the mechanism of atmospheric CO2 exchange.
