The requirement in Article 27 to supply prisoners of war withsufficient quantities of clothing, underwear and footwear plays twoimportant roles. First, it ensures the comfort and physical well-beingof prisoners of war, and second, it contributes to their humanetreatment and ensures respect for their dignity and honour.

Article 44 is one of three provisions in Chapter VII of the ThirdConvention containing rules regarding notification of military titlesand ranks and the treatment owed to the holders of these ranks when theybecome prisoners of war.

Denunciation refers to a unilateral act by which a State Party seeks toterminate its participation in a treaty. According to international law,treaties are subject to denunciation only if they contain a provisionallowing for such. Absent such a provision, denunciation is possible if itis established that the Parties intended to admit the possibility ofdenunciation or if a right of denunciation may be implied by the nature ofthe treaty.

According to the first paragraph of Article 60, all prisoners of war areentitled to a monthly advance of the regular pay owed to them by their armedforces and paid in the currency of the Detaining Power. The amount of themonthly advance depends on their rank. To determine their rate of pay,prisoners of war are divided into five categories.

The aim of Article 112 is to facilitate the implementation of theobligations in Articles 109 and 110 concerning direct repatriation oraccommodation in neutral countries of wounded and sick prisoners of war. Thefirst paragraph requires Parties to an armed conflict to establish mixedmedical commissions to examine wounded and sick prisoners of war, proposedirect repatriation or accommodation in neutral countries for those found tobe eligible, and make any other relevant decisions in their regard. Theinvolvement of a mixed medical commission is not required if the medicalauthorities of the Detaining Power decide, pursuant to Article 112(2), thata prisoner of war is manifestly seriously wounded or seriously sick and maytherefore be repatriated without being examined by the commission. Mixedmedical commissions have been established in several armed conflicts sincethe Second World War.

Article 43 is one of three provisions in Chapter VII of the ThirdConvention containing rules on the communication of titles and ranks inuse in the armed forces of a Party to a conflict and on the treatmentowed to the holders of these ranks when they become prisoners ofwar.

The provisions concerning insignia are important to prisoners of war.Removing insignia can be seen as an attack on their dignity and honour.Thus, Article 40 forms an integral part of the obligation to treatprisoners of war with the regard due to their rank, age and status.Wearing badges of rank also helps prisoners to maintain order anddiscipline among themselves.
