Summary
The successful premiere of Befreite Sehnsucht did nothing to alleviate Schoeck's general depression. He was again having difficulty falling asleep, and when he did, he was plagued by nightmares from which he would awake bathed in sweat. He would then wash in cold water and return to bed, lying awake until the cycle of sleep, nightmares, and waking would finally begin again. There was an undeniable, terrible irony in that what had for years been the bane of his wife's existence—his inability to sleep normal hours—was now his own. He tried reading at night to occupy himself, with Homer's Odyssey one of the works that he kept at his bedside. Later he resorted to writing out from memory Bach chorales, or passages from classical masterpieces of which he was fond, such as the opening pages of the Finale to Mozart's “Jupiter” Symphony. He would then correct them the next morning (Vogel once saw a nighttime manuscript copy of Bach's “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden,” at the end of which Schoeck had later scribbled “five mistakes”).
Nor was the fate of his new work for the Harmonie Chorus proving any kinder to him than had his brief, inauspicious collaboration with the choir half a century before. The Harmonie was still made up of the élite of Zurich society, and its committee members were already upset because their new conductor, Hans Erismann, had not consulted them before commissioning a work from Schoeck.
