Summary
This charming and captivating piece is (however) technically deceptively tricky, so that it can be quite difficult to bring off successfully. Written in 1875 in the astonishingly short time of 12 days, it is a burst of creative energy sparked off by Dvořák's happiness in the early years of his marriage and after having just received an important award. It is almost his first fully mature and consistently inspired work, the only earlier being the String Quintet in G (published much later as op.77). The masterly Symphony No.5 in F followed only a few weeks later. The Serenade was first published in 1877 in Dvořák's own arrangement for piano duet, by Emanuel Starý, Prague but in 1879 Bote & Bock acquired the publishing rights and issued the score and parts as well as reprinting the piano duet arrangement.
