Summary
January:
Sunday 1st B reakfast – Johnny [Newmark]. Willie 5.30. Party – Ruth Draper's 7.15. Lovely, sang lots of songs. Johnny played beautifully. Arrived in New York after terrible difficulty of Immigration – only just made it after contacting embassies and lawyers – and at great expense. What a to-do!
Monday 2nd Mr McLean 11.30. Luncheon Rudi [Bing]. Very nice. The Stiedrys came in. Train 5.25 to Tennessee.
Tuesday 3rd Arrived 4. Met by Alice Sumsion's sister! Very warm weather.
Wednesday 4th Nashville – Tennessee Community. Lovely concert – very appreciative. Caught train for Cincinnatti 11.45pm. Lost my beautiful brolly.
Thursday 5th Arrived Cincinnatti, slept a lot, saw a good flick, The Heiress and had lovely dinner in most modern hotel in the world! Caught night train to Lancaster.
Friday 6th Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Arrive 1.50pm. No one to meet us. Full audience but bad-tempered at casual treatment.
Saturday 7th Left for New York 9am. Rehearsed for tomorrow.
Sunday 8th New Friends [of Music]. New York. [Town Hall] 3 Bach. Brahms Serious. Very nervous but staggered through. Party – Ralph Hawkes, very nice then on to Simon Goldberg’s. Late to bed 2am.
Monday 9th 11 Hair. Mrs Lit lunch 1pm. Hotel Regis, Oak Room. 6 Dinner with Andre. Tommy Scherman concert 8.30. Quite a day! Had lesson with Clytie Mundy, wonderful help!
Tuesday 10th Packed, caught 12.55 train for Columbia.
Wednesday 11th Columbia, Missouri. Straight sales. How changed, Turtle, Hark, Bess. Frauenliebe. Botschaft, Wandelten, Von ewiger Liebe, S.N. [Silent noon], M.G.W., Soft day, Bold unbidd. Train late. Missed all connections. Four hours on Greyhound bus. Met with bouquet and many students and Benita [Cress] and Stella from La X! Lovely concert.
Thursday 12th Fulton. Went by car – another lovely concert, but tired. Reception after, nothing to eat much, so repaired to dive and had bacon and eggs at midnight! Lovely!
Friday 13th Car to Mexico Mo. [Montana] and pleasant train ride to Kansas City. Saw The Fallen Idol – magnificent and good dinner afterwards. Washed 1000 of smalls.
Saturday 14th Shopped. Rehearsed two hours and saw Adam's Rib. Very amusing. Grand dinner – the best yet.
Sunday 15th Arrived Omaha. Went to see Quartet [film] – very fine.
