Summary
The artists and ideas collected together here under the rubric of ‘lateness’ can be usefully described as a ‘milieu’. This term is used advisedly, to encompass both of the meanings attributed to it in the OED – first, in the sense of an ‘environment’ or ‘surrounding’; and second, in the sense of a ‘group of people with a shared (cultural) outlook’. The first definition can encompass a set of intellectual tendencies that arose in response to contemporary circumstances and were shaped by a complex web of discursive practices and institutional structures.
