Summary
The English version of this book owes its existence to the initiative of the late Professor Edward Shils to whose memory I feel truly indebted. I am also very grateful to Richard North who made the translation, and to the Danish Research Council which gave it financial support. Finally I wish to thank Jean Field for her meticulous work on making the manuscript ready for the press.
