Summary
As a writer, I have found myself placed between two languages for the past thirty years, in a ‘pitching of language’ (to use Michel Leiris's title) which has determined everything, even where I live. Going backwards and forwards between France and Algeria and vice versa, ending up not knowing which way is forward, where to go to, towards which language, which source, which way is backward, and without knowing either where to return to – a return which is anyway impossible, mythical, for all emigrants – but also a return towards one's past, towards one's mother-tongue, the tongue of a deaf and dumb mother […] This pitching between two languages, inscribed on the very space of my life, is something I think I made a preliminary assessment of in my first openly autobiographical book: Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade.)
